12 Awesome Gifts for Any New or Expecting Mom

Riding in the car that day you sat, as always, on my lap (which really meant taking up half the front seat). Daddy drove, and our meticulously packed duffel bag sat in the backseat. As we prepared to drop you off at Nana’s, it dawned on me – this might be the last time with just the three of us in the car together. Everything was about to change. And you, my sweet pup, would no longer be an “only child.”

Let’s be honest, you had it pretty good those first six years – doggy daycare, long scenic walks, a bed and toys at the office; you joined us for friends’ game nights, al fresco dinners and vacations. Some saw you just as a pet, we saw you as a family member. And we were about to add another family member – but human.

Four days after that tense drive (an eternity to you), we came home, but we weren’t alone. We brought a tiny, pungent, noisy… thing. It was hard to get a good look at it through the blanket, and you couldn’t understand why we guarded it so closely from your wet nose and eager tongue. Our nickname for the thing, “Baby Sissy,” only piqued your curiosity.

As much as we all hoped things at home would go back to normal, nighttime was anything but. Throughout the night we were interrupted by Baby Sissy’s sharp, demanding cries. I’m sure we wondered the same thing – how could a noise so loud come from something so small?? The days of snuggling up together for eight hours of uninterrupted sleep were gone.

Daytime was just as hectic. For awhile, I was not a good walk partner. A few times, Nana had to remind us to feed you. Your space was taken over by new toys and gear that you couldn’t play with. And your usual stroll around the yard for the perfect spot was cut short as we stood in the doorway with a crying… lump.

Friends had warned me that in the anxiety and sleep deprivation of those early weeks, we might take stress out on you. But it was actually the opposite – you were a reprieve. Though we loved your Baby Sissy immensely, there was so much about her that was new and unknown; but you were familiar. When I felt at my lowest, you were there to remind me it would be ok. When it seemed all Baby Sissy could do was take – my body, love, time and sleep – there you were to give. Uncomplicated, enthusiastic and overflowing with affection.

Those moments also reminded me that you’d make a great “Big Sissy.” It wasn’t overnight, but a wonderful thing happened in the time since we brought home the lump – a tiny human emerged.

Now you know Baby Sissy as the little person who drops tasty food scraps for you, squeals with delight when you enter a room and gives you whole-body hugs. We’re confident that for most of your days together, Baby Sissy will multiply the affection and love you receive – not take it away.

I know the first few months were hard on you, pup. Believe me, they were hard on us, too. But if there’s one thing I hope to communicate to you, it’s that you haven’t lost our love or your place in our family. You’ll always be my first baby.

At every age, there’s a reason not to pay retail for awesome kids’ clothes. Babies grow lightning fast. Toddlers really do a number on their duds. And big kids? They actually have opinions! (That feeling when you order the most adorable—and expensive—dress from a boutique catalog and your daughter refuses to wear it? Not great.) Happily, here in the Bay Area, we live in a veritable smorgasbord of fabulous kids’ consignment stores. No matter where you live, you can find a local shop packed with used baby and children’s clothes, gear, and toys, for a fraction of the brand-new value. And better yet? Get an even better deal by bringing in your own gently-used items to consign for cash or store credit.

San Francisco

Monkei Miles
San Francisco has a dearth of kids’ consignment shops, so budget-conscious locals all cheered when this hip and friendly new boutique, decorated with vintage toys, opened last summer. The owner, a former buyer for fan favorite Chloe’s Closet, has an eye for sourcing cute, cool, high-end used kids’ clothes (sizes newborn to 12), which she sells back at incredible prices. You can also find unique toys, mobiles, locally-made art and children’s jewelry. Keep kids busy in the reading nook, complete with comfy bean bag.

Insider tip: The owner buys used clothes on the spot for cash or credit (no consignment, no waiting!). Call for an appointment.

Chloe’s Closet
This San Francisco consignment favorite has three locations. The Bernal Heights store has long been a go-to for city moms and is on pretty much every “Best Kids’ Clothing Store” list in the city. From toys to costumes to maternity clothes, parents will find everything they’re looking for and will likely go home with much more. The Bernal location sells clothes for kids (from newborn to size 12) and moms, while the Inner Sunset location sells only kids’ items (newborn to size 10). The Berkeley location features kids’ sizes newborn to 12 as well as women’s maternity. (Note that you can consign women’s maternity and non-maternity clothes at all three locations, whether or not they can be sold there.) Be sure to check out the detailed “How to Consign” section on the website before you go. No appointment is necessary, and they buy anytime they’re open.

Insider Tip: The store’s Twitter feed occasionally offers coupons or call-outs for in-demand items.

Hunter’s Threads
Nestled in the heart of the Outer Sunset, Hunter’s Threads offers a plethora of second hand scores for your children, AND doubles as a resource for families seeking therapy for developmentally delayed kids. Unique to the consignment world is Hunter’s Threads approach to ascertaining their inventory. Unlike other shops where you are compensated for your hand me downs, HT accepts clothing on a donation basis. This means, you can clear out your clothing without worrying about the re-sale value or the label. The result? An easy KonMari session—clean, clear and donate. Your closet is left with the appropriately sized delicious duds for your wee one. It also means that HT can resell clothing at a lower cost (think Goodwill pricing vs. Chloe’s Closet) as they do not have a consignment fee. Hunter’s Threads also has their own line of clothing, adorned with their logo to drive awareness to the cause.

Coolest New Gear
It rocks to be a kid these days, and after checking out some new gear we’re almost convinced it makes being a parent easier too (we did say “almost,” right?) The new Ergo 360 offered the forward-facing position baby adores combined with the Ergo comfort fit parents love, while the Dozer Rocker presented a new take on naps in car seats and the Weehoo Trailer, with it’s fit-one-fit-all system gave parents a great new reason to hit the road. One splurge-worthy product, the Baby Brezza — baby’s first latte-making machine — really gave our readers a buzz.

Best “Frozen” Party
How many “Frozen” parties was your kid invited to in 2014? We’re willing to bet it was more than one. We were blown away by some amazing party plays on the smash hit Disney film, like this one thrown by a Marin Family.

Best Reasons to Play With Food
No doubt about it: Food is more fun when your kids actually eat it. We gave you ideas and seriously tasty recipes so you can get those dinner plates (or any plates, really) cleared. Red Tricycle writer Selena Kohng blew our minds with her incredible food art for kiddos … check out her crafty fox bagel! There were several are-you-kidding-me recipes we shared, especially treats like Cookies N’ Cream popcorn. And the sky was the limit when it comes to incredible edibles, especially Disney-themed cakes like Rapunzel’s Tower

One More Reason to Love Jason Segel
Even if you didn’t need another reason to be a huge fan of celeb Jason Segel, we gave you yet one more. When he chatted up Red Tricycle about his new book trilogy, Nightmares!, we learned cool facts about what makes this modern Muppet master tick.

Best Perks of Being Preggo
Nevermind the little person kicking around inside your belly. We had the skinny on some of 2014’s best perks of being preggo. You won’t even miss wine (that much!) when sipping 9 Months Sparkling Beverage. And having a Build-Your-Own-Sprinkle Cupcake Party was one of the coolest party themes we wanted to re-create. As far as new gear went, making your designer bag your go-to diaper bag was one of the most unique things we saw year.

Coolest New Openings
There are always new and cool kiddie-themed spots opening up, and our resolution in 2014 was to share the very best with you. Whether you drove right over to Diggerland USA in New Jersey for some excavating, got to check out the Discovery Cube in LA for science fun, or checked out the brand-new Maggie Daley Park in Chicago, we gave your our insider tips to making the mostest of your outing.

Until you had kids you didn’t really know that they actually grow like weeds. Your little seedlings can sprout up overnight making it hard to keep up with everything from soccer shoes to tutus. Buying and selling secondhand is a smart way to save money while they grow. Here’s the deal on five consignment shops ITP, and what they buy and sell.

Tater Tots
The bargains: Tucked away off 17th Street near Atlantic Station, Tater Tots boasts 4,800 square feet of kids’ loot. Flanking the entrance are dozens of strollers, bikes and outdoor toys. Once inside, you’ll find circular racks of brand-name clothes sized 0-10 (with a few 12 and 14s) and a nice selection of shoes. Delving further into the storehouse, you’ll find three more rooms dedicated to baby gear (swings, car seats, high chairs, etc.); toys, books and videos; and upscale cribs, bedding and heirloom clothing. This place pretty much has it all, sans maternity clothes. But be forewarned: with the overwhelming amount of toys they boast, if you bring your kids along to shop, you may have a hard time getting them to leave!

What you’ll score: Toys by the truckload and traditional togs

How to consign: Drop-ins are welcome, however it is recommended you call first to ask if they are taking new items, and what season for clothing. The consignor receives 50 percent of the tag price, less tax.

433 Bishop Street NW
Phone: 404-817-9393
Hours: Tue – Fri 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, Sat 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Rhubarb & Custard
The bargains:
Conveniently located in Buckhead near East Andrews Drive, Rhubarb & Custard offers kids clothing sized 0-14, accessories and shoes; maternity clothing; as well as a sprinkling of gear, toys/books and decor. In an effort to please all price points, their clothing ranges from “new-with-tags Target brand to Janie and Jack to Burberry and smocked,” says owner Louise Boyce-Nyberg. The store also offers a selection of new, locally-designed gift items such as bows, art and puzzles.

What you’ll score: Loads of Lilly (Pulitzer) and smocked stuff

How to consign: Please call for an appointment. Their motto is “cute and clean” when it comes to clothing, and items should be less than three years old. Consignors receive 40 percent of the selling price. Gear and furniture are accepted on a case-by-case basis.

3265 Roswell Road NE
Phone: 404-474-9860
Hours: Mon – Fri 10am to 6pm, Sat 10am – 5pm

Sweet Repeats
The bargains:
This 30-year-old Buckhead establishment specializes in children’s and maternity clothing and shoes. A few strollers can be found scattered throughout the store, amongst the sprawling racks of clothing, sized 0-16 for girls and 0-20 for boys. Monogramming is also offered onsite; choose from bibs and bloomers or bring in your own items.

What you’ll score: Sweet southern smocked stuff and a boatload of bows

How to consign: Please call for an appointment. Spring/summer items are accepted from January through June while fall/winter items are from July through December. Items must be freshly laundered, in bags or boxes (no hangers), and under two years old. Forty percent of the selling price will be paid to the consignor.

800 Miami Circle
Phone: 404-261-7519
Hours: Mon – Sat 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Baby Love
The bargains:
Brace yourself, this place is much more than a consignment shop. Grant Park mom and owner Lauren Hise opened the consignment and gift boutique in order to give local parents a one-stop resource for all things child-related. In addition to consigned clothing, toys and gear and maternity clothing, the space houses a 700-square-foot studio with classes, camps and special event rental. A large variety of retail items are offered (they have a great selection of carriers and slings) and even a registry.

What you’ll score: Toys and gear galore plus good-condition gear like cloth diapers

How to consign: Summer clothing is accepted January through June and winter clothing July through December. Appointments are necessary for clothing and shoes, however gear and toys can be dropped off. The consignor receives 40 percent of the sale price, and in some cases toys will be bought outright at 30 percent cash. Note: Baby Love accepts clothing sized 0-5 while their sister store, Boomerang (located in the same shopping complex), takes clothing sized 6 up to women’s.

465 Boulevard Ave. SE, Ste. #101
Phone: 404-590-1380
Hours: Tues – Sat 11am – 6pm, Sun 2pm – 6pm

Jack and Jill
The bargains:
In 2000, Lisa Doesburg, a former chef seeking to have her second child, bought this Avondale Estates business. Baby gear, furniture, toys and maternity clothes can be found throughout the shop in addition to a more casual stock of kids clothes sized 0-16.

What you’ll score: Books, DVDs and furniture as well as clothes

How to consign: Monday through Friday from 11:00am to 4:30pm, drop-ins are welcome. Appointments must be made on Saturdays. Items must be in a box, bin or basket. Outright cash or store-credit offers are made at the end of the appointment. They accept spring/summer clothing from February through June, and fall/winter clothing from August through December.

Consignment Stores for Gently Used Kids, Baby & Maternity Gear in Seattle and the Eastside

You’ve heard it before. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. If you’re rethinking your current shopping habits, it’s never been easier for eco-savvy Seattle & Eastside mamas to shop for great deals on gently-used clothes at area consignment stores. From thrift shops for die-hard bargain hunters (Value Village and Goodwill) to the vintage racks at neighborhood shops (Retroactive Kids and Pop Tots) there are loads of options for the eco (and price) conscious shopper.

One of the best ways to clean up and clean house is through the bevy of beautiful Seattle consignment stores that have cropped up around town. Most of the items sold in these modern boutiques are in such pristine condition, you’d never believe you were shopping for second-hand goods. Following are our picks for the best consignment stores for maternity, baby and children’s clothes.

Bonus: Bring your closet full of clothing, toys and gear and pay it forward (and earn some $$ to boot).
Tip:
The policies differ from store to store, so it’s a good idea to call before bringing your goods in.
