They say that a hot dog always tastes better at the ballpark. While that may be true, there are so many other tasty treats to try at T-Mobile Park this season. This year marks the ninth-year collaboration between the Mariners’ hospitality partner, Centerplate, and 2019 James Beard Award Semifinalist Chef Ethan Stowell. Together, they’re bringing new tastes, new flavors and even a new signature cocktail inspired by the Mariners new partnership with T-Mobile to the park. Scroll down to see what you can expect to sink your teeth into this season.

Hit It Here Cafe

T-Mobile Park

Chef Stowell has made some exciting updates to the Hit It Here Café menu adding selections from his Ballard Pizza and burgers featuring Crowd Cow. Created with a half-pound Crowd Cow beef patty, the Hempler’s Bacon Burger is almost too good to be true. Topped with smoked sweet and spicy Hempler’s bacon, Tillamook cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and special sauce, it’s a real mouthful. Other burgers on the menu include the Spicy Burger (half pound Crowd Cow patty topped with Face Rock Creamery’s "In Your Face Habanero cheese,” Mama Lil’s pickled peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion and special sauce), the Beyond™ Burger (a plant-based patty with lettuce, tomato, onion and vegan Just Mayo) and the Chef Inspired Burger created by some of Seattle’s top chefs, including Ethan Stowell, Maria Hines, John Sundstrom, Brady Williams and Mitch Mayers and will change on a regular basis.

If pizza is more your style, Stowell brings four kinds of personal-sized pizzas from Ballard Pizza, including Arugula & Guanciale, the Staple & Fancy (with pecorino, mozzarella, Zoe’s pepperoni, jalapeños and pineapple), Zoe’s Pepperoni and Cheese (with pecorino and mozzarella).

Order Up: A side of KuKu Fries with that burger. They are just as unique as they are topped with togarashie Japanese seasoning, red tobiko (flying fish roe), sriracha chili sauce, horseradish crema and chives.

Location: Hit It Here Cafe

Fat's Chicken

T-Mobile Park

Two of the best new tastes this season come with a Southern accent as the Central District’s Fat’s Chicken & Waffles brings its cuisine to the ballpark. The Five Spice Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich is delicious with its garlic aioli, tomato, pickle, mixed greens and house-made pimento cheese on a toasted bun. It goes together nicely with the Creole-spiced mac & cheese (which is just the right amount of spice without becoming too “hot”) made with Tillamook cheddar and mozzarella sauce. Other great choices include Fat’s Buttermilk Fried Chicken Strips with fries, Fat’s Wings (served with lemon pepper, buffalo style or gasp, naked) and Poutine (French fries topped with house-made Andouille sausage gravy and pimento cheese and rice with Andouille sausage gravy (aka Jasmine rice smothered in house-made Andouille sausage gravy).

Paseo Caribbean Sandwiches

T-Mobile Park

Recently voted "Best Sandwich Shop in Washington,” by Thrillist, Paseo, brings their mouthwatering Caribbean flavors with inventive spins of favorite sandwiches each served with garlic aioli, caramelized onion, cilantro, pickled jalapeño and romaine lettuce on a toasted baguette. Choices here include the Caribbean Roast Sandwich (slow roasted pork shoulder in Paseo’s signature marinade), Smokin’ Thighs Sandwich (roasted skin-on chicken thighs), Tofu Delight Sandwich (sautéed organic tofu) and the West Caribbean Bowl (slow-roasted pork or chicken thighs atop jasmine rice with black beans, warm salsa, cheddar cheese, sour cream, pickled jalapeño and cilantro with tortilla chips.)

Order Up: The sides which are just as amazing. The roasted corn on the cob is unlike any corn you have ever eaten. Slathered in aioli, the ears are topped with parmesan cheese, cilantro and Paseo spices. Other sides include black beans and rice, Caribbean fries (with aioli, cilantro and Paseo spices) and nachos topped with cheddar cheese sauce, sour cream, caramelized onions, cilantro and pineapple chunks.

Li'l Woody's Burgers & Shakes

T-Mobile Park

Hamburgers might seem like a dime a dozen at the ballpark, but Li’l Woody’s is creating imaginative and savory combinations this season. Using fresh, quality ingredients, namely Painted Hills grass-fed beef, the burger joint has received high marks as one of the best places in Seattle. Now, you can enjoy the flame-broiled burgers served with chopped onion, diced pickle, tomato, lettuce, ketchup and mayo as you cheer on the M's. Choose from The Big Woody (1/4 lb. beef patty, Painted Hill’s bacon and Tillamook cheddar cheese), the Li’l Woody (the same burger minus the bacon) or the Impossible™ Veggie Burger. Your kids might prefer the chicken tenders and you can help them eat the hand-cut French fries.

Order Up: Fries from the mini fry menu featuring the now classic Garlic Fries, Queso Fries and a little something they like to call the ’95 Slide which is an order of fries with a small Full Tilt ice cream milkshake – for dipping! Sure, it sounds weird, but people love the savory/sweet combo.

Sultan of Sandwich & The Natural

T-Mobile Park

The Sultan of Sandwich is offering a tribute to the Hall of Fame broadcaster Dave Niehaus with its Grand Salami Sandwich. Believe it or not, it comes with a half-pound of local salami, smoked provolone cheese and grainy mustard on a marbled rye baguette. My, Oh My!

Location: Main Level, Section 105

Over at The Natural, you’ll find vegetarian options like the Beyond Meats Vegan Sausage (gluten-free, vegan plant-based protein topped with choice of condiments available in spicy or sweet Italian flavors. Even gluten-free buns are available if you prefer). Other choices include Avocado Toast (fresh scooped avocado on Franz Bakery organic high-protein, gluten-free bread and choice of up to two toppings), pre-made or build-your-own salads and the hummus platter.

Location: Section 132

Magenta Mojo Signature Cocktail & Buzz Margarita

T-Mobile Park

Pretty in pink, the new Magenta Mojo is a "disruptively light and refreshing” signature cocktail. It's considered not too sweet, strong or heavy and pairs well with many of the food choices featured here. It gets its vibrant color from hibiscus extract and includes vodka, Lillet Rose, Pamplemousse liqueur, and Peychaud’s Bitters and is topped with soda water. For an extra “buzz” spring the extra $3 for the lighted ice cubes.

Location: The ‘Pen, Terrace Club lounges and Lookout Landing

El Zacatecano mezcal is the base for the refreshing Mexican drink the Buzz Margarita.  It features Szechuan buttons, edible flowers that tingle the tongue and toasted and spicy grasshoppers as a garnish.

Location: Hit It Here Café Club Level

The Frozen Rope and Shug’s Soda Fountain & Ice Cream

T-Mobile Park

No offense to the classic Toll House cookie, but The Frozen Rope is bringing Metropolitan Market’s "The Cookie” to play. The 6 oz. treat is practically a meal with two kinds of Belgian chocolate, toasted walnuts and a sprinkle of fleur de sel. Sure, your kids will love it, but they won’t appreciate it. This one’s for you, mom and dad!

Location: Main Level, Section 132

Meanwhile, Shug’s brings a bit of nostalgia from its old-fashioned soda parlor to T-Mobile Park with two of its colorful portable carts hand-scooping Lopez Island Creamery's small-batch super premium ice cream.

Order Up: A prosecco float–a four ounce scoop of Lopez Island Creamery ice cream topped with San Martino Doc Extra Dry.

Park Your Car & Bike Everywhere… Seriously.
One of the very best aspects of a family trip to Redondo Beach is that you can literally ride your bike everywhere… even with little ones. When you stay at Shade, you’re only about a five to ten minute bike ride away from Redondo Beach Pier, whale watching and water sport rentals, Seaside Lagoon, the beach… it’s all just a few short pedals of the bike up the road!

Redondo Beach is equipped with bike paths that have their own traffic signals for cyclists. You’ll feel safer that you and your kids aren’t riding on the same street as cars.

Go to Marina Bike Rentals (a three minute walk around the corner from Shade) to rent all types of bikes for your crew. They have kids bikes, cruisers, multi-speed bikes, tandem bikes, kid’s trailers, and Kazoo Tag-alongs that attach to the back of an adult bike for a kid to ride behind (shown above).

From Marina you can ride in either direction on a bike path: twenty miles north along The Strand as far as the Santa Monica Pier or south 2.25 miles through Redondo Beach.

Cycling around Redondo Beach is an added vacation perk that’s so much fun for kids and adults alike. No need to pile in and out of the car and look for/pay for parking.

Insider’s Tip: Be sure to ask the folks at Marina Bike Rentals to give you a basket to attach to your bike (for purchases you may make en route) and locks for when you arrive at your destination–– both are included with the rental fee.

Redondo Beach Pier
The Pier has old-fashioned appeal as it was originally built in 1889, and reconstructed in 1995. There are dozens of souvenir shops and food vendors and locals dub it a west coast “Coney Island” filled with novelties including funnel cakes, churros, popcorn and the freshest seafood in town.

Insider’s Tip: Enjoy free concerts on the Pier July-September and free movies on the boardwalk in June.

Visit the quirky, 70’s-era, Redondo Fun Factory on the Pier before it closes. Kids will love playing the vintage quarter arcade games (beat them at Pac-Man!), Skee-Ball and riding the Tilt-a-Whirl.

This trip was paid for by Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau, but all opinions expressed here belong to the writer.

The gastropub just might be the new cupcake, and you won’t hear us complaining. Not when they’re like the new Simmzy’s in Burbank. Just opened in January, you now have a spectacular eating option for your post-Ikea shopping meal that doesn’t involve meatballs. Instead you get local, organic food, superbly sourced drinks, and a place where kids love to play (and then clean their plates).

Playtime For You and Them
They play outside, you relax with a drink—24 beers on tap, 10 wines, all rotating. And drinks that flirt with the divine offerings at the poshest of nightclubs, with everything from bitters to tonics made in house (as they told us, everything but booze, ketchup and mustard are made in the kitchen). It’s also local, organic, and sustainable—all the things you’re looking to feed your kids, in a casual and welcoming atmosphere.

We mentioned that while you’re sipping your tomatillo infused Bloody Simmzy or custom made Mule, the kids are busy playing, right? After ordering, the kids can duck out to the grassed patio to play bean bag toss, and bring their own hand crafted libation (lemonade) with them.  Or they can stay inside and play with the Wikki Stix that are brought to the table.  Move over Google glasses, Wikki glasses are about to be a thing.

Order Up
They’ll glance at the kids menu and bark their order before heading outside. The kids menu is short, but built for kids and parents alike. There’s a burger, cheese burger, “awesome” grilled cheese (it is) and plain chicken tenders (which are even more awesome, and you will sneak some, just so you can try one of the dips that comes with it: garlic aioli, avocado buttermilk, BBQ or blue cheese). Pick from green salad, shoestring fries or sweet potato fries to accompany the entrée. Normally, we’re proponents of the sweet potato, but in this case we have to recommend the shoestring. They’re not too crispy, yet not at all soggy. The kids won’t share, so order your own.

Speaking of your own, you can choose from a salad (kale, ahi, shrimp, chicken and short rib are all stellar toppings), fish tacos, burgers or sammys. While the burger receives justifiable raves, we also wouldn’t miss the pulled pork panino, the juicy grilled chicken or the salmon sandwich. And if you’re looking for a veggie option, the black bean veggie burger will leave you more than satisfied.

If you’re here on the weekend, there are a few egg options that are served until 2:30 p.m. They’re all classics, and all delicious (though we confess a particular fondness for the Breakfast Sandwich).

Dessert Time
On this section of the menu, there are only 2 offerings, but that’s all you need. Mostly because you’re still so full from French fry stealing (parent tax). Their most popular dessert is the Apple Filled Donut (and with words like salted caramel, pistachio, and ice cream accompanying it, it’s no wonder), but since when do kids pay attention to what the masses like? They want what they want, and when your kids see the S’mores Chocolate Pudding, it’s game over. Sneak a bite of the warm marshmallow topping before they start fighting over who gets to lick the last smudge of pudding.

Oh, The Vibe?
It’s a little laid back beach and a little 70’s lodge with a hipster sporty vibe. That sounds like a hodge-podge, but it’s not, and the aesthetic is modern yet homey yet welcoming.  You can sit by the open doors that lead out to the enclosed patio, where the kids can run and play and it feels like a summer day by the beach. And the waiting area downstairs is cozy and chic but comfortable with relaxing chairs and friendly staff chatting you up while you wait.

Our favorite space is actually the private dining room and lounge upstairs that are perfect for parties (kids or parents). And if the beanbags on the patio lose their charms and there is no party upstairs, kids are welcome to wander up and play a game of chess or watch sports on TV with parents.

Family Knows Family
So, how’d a sports bar get so family friendly? It’s all in the family. Mike Simms, the owner, grew up running around the kitchen and under the tables at French Market in West Hollywood and The Kettle in Manhattan Beach; they’re his father’s and grandfather’s restaurants. Then he, his father and his 2 brothers opened Tin Roof Bistro, Simmzy’s Manhattan Beach, Manhattan Beach Post, and Fishing With Dynamite. Now with two girls of his own, he knows that parents want great food, even better booze, and the chance to share it with their kids in an atmosphere that keeps kids eating and entertained.

Parking is free in a giant lot (which for locals might be no biggie, but for those of us who crossed the 5 to get here, it feels like winning the lottery), and if this drive seems to far for this to become your weekend hang, don’t worry. The original outpost is still in Manhattan Beach, the Long Beach location is always hopping and ground has already broken on the planned spot in Venice Beach. The new Simmzy’s is open weekends for brunch and weekdays from 11 a.m. to midnight.

This recipe is for all of you vegetarians who are left with the salad during barbecues when only meat is on the grill. We love this recipe for black bean burgers because it gives an alternative to the classic veggie burger. With black beans, onions, and a bevy of herbs, you can’t get much healthier than this.

Ingredients:
2 slices whole wheat bread, or use gluten free
1 can no salt added black beans, rinsed and drained
1 egg
1/2 cup yellow onion, finely diced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste
hot sauce to taste (optional)
2 tablespoons canola oil
4 whole wheat hamburger buns, or use gluten free
lettuce and sliced tomato for serving

Method:
1. Place bread slices in a food processor and pulse until the consistency of breadcrumbs.  (You could also use store bought if you prefer.) Set aside.

2. Place beans into a medium sized bowl and mash with a fork or a potato masher.  Add breadcrumbs, egg, oregano, parsley, garlic powder, salt/pepper, and hot sauce if using.  Mix all ingredients together.  Using your hands, form 4 equal patties.  Set aside.

3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.  Place patties into skillet and cook about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until each side is slightly crispy and the patty is heated through.

4. Serve immediately on buns with lettuce and tomato.
