Beecher's Handmade Cheese

If you’re in the city, hit up this Pike Place Market favorite that serves up the best mac ‘n’ cheese in the Seattle area (or arguably, in the world!). Young and old(er) cheese heads go nuts for the ooey, gooey, cheddary goodness at Beecher’s, who make their flagship cheese on-premise—while you watch! Order cheese curds, paninis, or soup, but save room for a steamy cup of mac. Stop by the cheese counter on your way out and take home one of Beecher’s award-winning cheeses.

Elliott Bay Brewing Company

Here, you’ll find an extensive list of brews and ciders, though Elliott Bay Public House is a family joint at heart. Founders Todd Carten and Brent Norton’s primary goal is to serve delicious food and drink in an environment where everyone in the community is welcome. The brewpub boasts a wide-open dining room perfect for people watching and enough noise that nobody will hear your chattering child. The kids’ menu gets points for variety: opt for a hot dog and fries, salmon teriyaki, or fish and chips. We also appreciate Elliott Bay’s commitment to sustainability. The kitchen serves free-range, all-natural beef and chicken and purchases local bread baked with spent grain from the brewing process.

Plan your next sunny day at Sesame Place, San Diego’s newest theme park located in Chula Vista. BYO towels and plan to get wet at one of the 11 featured water play zones—water slides, a splash playground and a lazy river just to name a few. Stay dry on eight theme-park rides that will take you up, but not too high. Little kids will love the tot-sized roller coaster and rockin’ rockets.

Sesame Place is a Certified Autism Center and offers specialized services for guests with autism and other special needs for every family to enjoy their visit. Sing and dance at live shows or parades, soak up the sun from your private cabana or skip the lines with the Magic Queue! This guide is full of tips and insider info with your sneak peek into the all-new Sesame Place. Take a look and get ready for some fun!

Rides & Slides

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Slip, slide and ride your way around Sesame Place on “wet” and “dry” rides. You’ll definitely want to plan on getting wet since there are 11 water feature rides and 8 theme-park style rides at Sesame Place. Each has its own height requirement for kids to either ride alone or with an adult. Plan ahead by printing out a map of the park and write your kid’s initials next to the rides they’re tall enough for. This will save you time so you’ll know which areas to head straight for.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Plenty of outdoor shower rinse stations and open-air changing stalls with doors are available. These are in the center of the park.
  • Skip the line and add on the Magic Queue pass for priority ride access, starting at $19.99/person.

Water Play

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Everyone from babies to adults will find a water feature they can splash about in. Most of the water rides have a minimum height requirement of 42”. There are four rides for kiddos under 42”: Big Bird’s Rambling “Lazy” River, Big Bird’s Beach wave pool, Elmo’s Silly Sand Slides and Abby’s Paradise children’s pool. Lifeguards are stationed everywhere so there will be lots of extra eyes keeping everyone safe.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Some water activities for smaller kids require life jackets. These are provided free of charge in all sizes and for all ages who wish to wear them.

Theme Park Rides

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Get your thrills on the dry side of the park from Elmo’s Rockets and Super Grover’s Box Car Derby, or a mellow delight from a spin around the Sunny Day Carousel or the Rub-A-Dub Submarine. Most mechanical rides are good for small children, with only three of them requiring heights of 36” or 38” tall to ride.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • They offer a “rider child swap” when a ride doesn’t allow a parent to ride with all of their children at the same time due to limited ride seats. The adult can ride with one child, while the other child waits at the front of the line. When the ride is complete the adult can then ride again with the other child while the first child waits aside.

Sesame Street Neighborhood

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Make time to explore the real Sesame Street Neighborhood; it’s filled with fun surprises for littles to find. Ring Bert & Ernie’s doorbell, look at Elmo’s window and you may see him singing and dancing, push their apartment number buttons in the right order to hear what the gang is up to, pop bubbles at the laundromat and most importantly “don’t knock” on Oscar’s trash can…or should you? This area is perfect for littles because all of the buttons and activities are just at their height.

TIPS:

  • Time your visit to this street with Big Bird’s daily storytime; just look for all the birdhouses and you can’t miss his BIG nest. While you’re nearby, pop into the green room around the corner for photos with Elmo and friends.

Sesame Street Fun

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Sing and dance every day with Sesame Street friends as they put on their biggest welcome show at the Sesame Street Theater. Watch Big Bird dance down the street every afternoon with all of his friends in a high-energy musical parade that will have you shaking your hips or at least bobbing your head along. Track down Sesame Street friends to find them wandering about ready to meet you and take photos together. Plan out the year to include holiday shows for The Count’s Halloween Spooktacular (Sept. 17 – Oct. 30) or A Very Furry Christmas Celebration (Nov. 12 – Dec. 31).

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Reserve upfront spots for the daily shows and parade for the best views. Add these online, at the entrance or from the app. Reserved seating starts at $4.99/person.

Eats On The Street

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Six different food options are available to fill you up with everything from quick snacks to meals and of course cookies! You’ll find hamburgers (Impossible burgers too), chicken sandwiches, salads and wraps from various walk-up windows or grab-n-go food stands selling popcorn, hot dogs and soda. For extra hot days, the Dippin’ Dots or Icees will help cool you down.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Look for the Starbucks stand for your caffeine fix; it’s just to the left after you enter.
  • Outside food, beverages and coolers are NOT allowed inside the park, except for a bottle of water or refillable water bottle (bottle filling stations are inside). Exceptions are made for special diets, allergies and baby food.

Amenities

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Upgrades, rentals and extra supplies can make the difference from a fun day to a great day! From cabanas to lockers and strollers to diapers, find out what and where to go for that extra mile.

Rent a cabana for an easy way to keep everyone and everything together. With a cabana rental the food service will come to you and you’ll get access to a private Abby’s Paradise Pool. Score! Cabana rentals start at $149.

Locker rentals are a great way to keep your things secure without worrying about where they are. Choose from small, medium or large and you’ll have access to open and close it all day long.

Stroller rentals are available in single and double and make a great way to keep your kids and your things all together. It might be helpful for kiddos who nap to take a little break and rest their feet as you chase bigger kiddos around the park. Wheelchair and electric scooter rentals are available too.

Sesame Souvenirs has you covered if you forget anything or need extras like swim diapers, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, water shoes, towels, t-shirts, swimsuits and of course souvenirs!

Photographers will be on hand to capture special memories since your camera might be locked away for the day. They’ll give you a QR code card that you can order from the Park Photo Center before you leave. (Photos are only available to see inside the park; there’s no online viewing or purchase access after you leave the park.)

123 Trade With Me is where you’ll find Sesame Place trading pins!

Certified Autism Center

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Sesame Place is a Certified Autism Center, which means that all of its employees have been specially trained and provide extra services to guests with autism and other disabilities Sensory ride guides are posted at each ride to indicate how the ride might affect sensory issues. Rider Accessibility Program allows guests to develop a ride match program with park assistance. Quiet rooms, noise-canceling headphones for shows and low-sensory play areas are also available in the park (look for Rosita’s Harmony Hills, next to Big Bird’s Beach).

Guest Services

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Head straight to guest services where you’ll find many hidden gems that could help save the day. The Baby Care Center provides a quiet place for feeding babies and bottle warming. The First Aid station could help with any scrapes or bumps. This is where “Lost Parents” will reunite with children brought over by staff members. You can also get a Cashless Wristband to load up $50 to show at food services for payment instead of bringing your wallet around. The best thing from here might just be the waterproof ID wristbands you can get for free that will help staff members identify your child in case of emergency.

Know Before You Go

Bonnie Taylor @famdiego

Here’s what to know before you go…how much, how long and where to park are all the answers to help you figure out how to make this day happen.

COST:
Admission includes wet and dry rides, shows, parades and open lounge chairs. Single-day tickets start at $64.99 online, parking is not included. Season Passes start at $132 online and do include parking. Kids ages 23 months and younger are free, so kids ages 24 months and up need a ticket/pass.

PARKING:
General parking is $35 per car, while up-close parking ranges from $35-$50 per car and varies by day.

HOURS:
Hours vary but are generally from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekends with extended hours during the summer. They’re generally only open for weekends, holidays and school breaks; with a closure between January-March. Operating Dates for 2022 are Mar. 26 – Dec. 31.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Tickets are not refundable, but you can change the date by calling customer service.
  • Make sure you’re on the correct website for the location you want to visit. The Philadelphia and San Diego websites are very similar, without much reference for which location (look at the web address if you’re not sure).

TIPS:

  • Plan your day before you go by checking ride heights, ride locations and any extra upgrades you might want to add on.
  • Buy tickets online before you go (they’re cheaper online and you won’t have to wait in line).
  • Download the Sesame Place app. You can access showtimes, character visits, ride heights, reserved seating and more.

Anthony’s Nose

Rob W. via Yelp

If you’d rather spend more time hiking than driving, you can look closer to home: Anthony’s Nose is a short hike up a section of the Appalachian Trail that ends with a view of the Bear Mountain Bridge and a scenic overview of the Hudson River. Be prepared for a bit of legwork, because Anthony has a pretty steep nose. The walk is relatively short distance of about three miles round trip, but it’s a mix of climbs and straight paths. The climbs are more like a staircase thanks to the rocky layout of the inclines, but they can be tough on beginners. If you still have time — and energy! — when you finish the hike, you and the kids can take a walk across the Bear Mountain Bridge, visit the small but free zoo, or ride a carousel. All make a perfect reward for your trek up the trail!

Arden Point and Glenclyffe

hiking trails for kids
Josh B. via Yelp

Bring a bit of history into your hike by visiting Arden Point and Glenclyffe. In this relatively easy hike, you and the kids can retrace the footsteps of Revolutionary War general Benedict Arnold as he made his escape in 1780. It's an excellent way to bring history to life for older kids who might be studying this period in American history. The trail also offers some views of the river, but if you've had enough of that there's plenty more to see, like the 1950s railroad track that is still in use today for freight, and a few historic buildings that date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Palisades Interstate Park

Noah K. via Yelp

Located under an hour's drive from the city, the NJ Palisades Park offers gorgeous views and scenic routes, as well as about 30 miles of trails of varying difficulty. This means there's a trail for any level of hiker, including small children. We recommend the State Line Lookout trails for their variety in terrain and difficulty. Taking the trails from the Lookout means getting views of the Hudson River and finding some hidden treasures like a tree swing that makes for awesome photo-ops, and the Women's Federation Monument. Before you go, ensure that everyone is wearing hiking shoes (not sneakers or running shoes) -- the terrain can get rocky.

Muttontown Preserve

hiking with kids near nyc
Tim C. via Yelp

The Muttontown Preserve trail is one of the easiest on our list, with winding but relatively flat trails through 550 acres of fields, woods, and ponds. The trails here are less like hikes and more like nature walks, allowing everyone to take in their surroundings without getting overtired—perfect for little feet and beginners. The trails also take you through a number of estates, as well as the curious remains of the mansion of King Zod, the last Albanian monarch. It is now in ruins, and covered in some colorful graffiti, making for an interesting sight among the trees. The trail markers can leave something to be desired here however, so come equipped with a map, a compass, and/or a GPS or you may end up spending a bit more time here than you meant to!

Sometimes we forget there is nature in our own backyard. If walking through Prospect and Central Park is not exciting enough, take a day trip to Staten Island's Greenbelt Conservancy parks. This foundation oversees 2800 acres of public park—including 30 miles of hiking and walking trails—and consists of High Rock, WIllowbrook, and LaTourette Parks.

All three are hidden pockets of nature and offer hours of leisurely hiking trails through wooded areas, marshes, ponds and other gorgeous landscapes. Both destinations are a perfect starter for the kids due to their location and the ease of the trails. They can wet their little hiking boots here, then move on to the more challenging or lengthier trips.

Norm R. via Yelp

The hiking at the Eagle Rock Reservation is easy enough for kids to keep up, and without much of a trail to follow you are left to blaze your own path through the woods. But the walking itself is not what will keep the family coming back: hiking here rewards you with an amazing panoramic view of Manhattan. Schunemunk Mountain

Roxx J. via Yelp

Schunemunk Mountain is another fantastic spot to take the kids. The prehistoric beach offers over 25 miles of hiking trails and varied terrain, but it's not suitable for beginners so prepare accordingly. The mountain boasts some spectacular features, like a 3,000 foot pink rock and wild blueberries ripe for picking in late spring and early summer. Some of the (literally) biggest attractions along the mountain trails are the giant megalith boulders at the top of the mountain, but be prepared to do some sweating on your way up — the diverse terrain is beautiful but it can get tough.

24 Incredible Train Car Stays You Need to Book Now

Family-Friendly Wineries Where You Can Stay the Night

16 Family Resorts with Jaw-Dropping Water Features

Sure, you can head to a tropical location and drink fizzy things at a swim-up bar—not that there’s anything wrong with that—but if your family is looking for something a little more unique, adventurous and luxurious than a cookie cutter resort stay, we found your happy place. From daring knights to a tale of wizardry to luscious rooms and a brand new spa, read on to find out why a Kilkea Castle vacation is just what the family needs.

Bathe Yourself in Irish History

Amber Guetebier

Established in 1180, Kilkea Castle was a defensive stronghold through the 1800s. The five-foot thick walls and guardsman tower with windows for the archers are just some of the evidence of the castle's history. One of the longest running owners were the Fitzgerald family, who owned many estates throughout Ireland, it remained in that family until the 1960s, when the property became a hotel but fell into ruin. Lovingly restored by the Cashman family, Kilkea is the perfect blend of history, luxury and legend.

And Mystery

Amber Guetebier

Kilkea Castle's logo features a monkey and the story behind the significance of this primate is as charming as the castle itself. Heir to the castle and estate, the Wizard Earl is said to have been rescued from a terrible fire at a neighboring castle by a monkey that belonged to the court magician. Although considered blessed as a child because of this, the family was under threat of the English, and after his father and brother were killed the young Wizard Earl was sent away to Italy (in an attempt to protect him). There, he studied with the famous Medici family and is said to have learned alchemy, astrology and other mystical arts. His reputation includes conjuring up the river, snakes and more. His tower—where he conducted his magic in secret—is off limits to guests but a wander will allow you a good look at it and the tiny door just the right size for a monkey.

Tip: Ask at the desk, and the bar, and the clubhouse or 1180 and see who tells the best version of this marvelous story. We liked Andrew at 1180s lively retelling, especially!

Sleep Like a Royal

Amber Guetebier

We recommend requesting a stay in the castle itself, which has 11 guest rooms, or stay in one of the 30 historic carriage rooms, also connected to the main rooms of the castle. You'll also find on the 180-acre estate more modern cottages, many of which are self-catering with multiple bedrooms, perfect for larger families or multi-generations traveling together.

Tip: You can request in advance a cot (meaning a small crib or Pack n' Play) or a campbed (which is what we think of as a cot bed in the US) for a room after making your reservation. This means you can stay in the more historic rooms with a setup for your kiddo. Most of the castle rooms are more than ample for this, but if you want a separate room from the kids you'll want to go with the cottages.

Revisit Family Meals

Amber Guetebier

Kilkea Castle hired renowned Irish chef David McCain (of Adare Manor) who transformed the castle's menus to featured exquisite but not pretentious food that tastes every bit as good as it looks, owing in part to his attention to detail and zest for freshness. Be sure and check out what he's growing in the kitchen garden on the castle grounds.

Amber Guetebier

The high-end (but still kid-welcoming) fine dining at 1180 is a feast fit for the sophisticated and the finicky alike. That kitchen garden we mentioned? You'll find those ingredients on your plate along with locally sourced meats, vegetables and more.

You'll also delight in daily breakfast service complete with local eggs, made-to-order waffles, an array of cereals and baked goods, fresh juice and delicious Irish cheeses.

You'll find nightly fine dining at 1180, or opt for the Club House Bistro and Hermione's, located a short walk from the main castle, for excellent food in a more casual atmosphere.

Indulge at High Tea

Amber Guetebier

Treat yourselves to a proper tea service, held in the Drawing Room every day. With classic (and magnificent) scones, tea sandwiches, baked treats that rival a French patisserie's best (think miniature lemon meringue tarts) and service that makes you feel like you belong among the velvet couches and sparkling chandeliers.

Get Lost on the Grounds

Remember how we mentioned the estate is 180 acres (and growing)? While much of that is dedicate to a renowned golf course, you'll find plenty to explore on foot. Amble through the hedges, relax on the lawn, take a jog down the tree canopied main road and more. At the time of this writing, the owners had acquired an additional 30 acres of forested land with the intent to create more wandering paths for families.

And Find a Secret Garden

Around every corner you'll find a breathtaking scene, including babbling brooks and weeping willows. Bring your sketchbook. This is the kind of place that leaves lasting impressions and inspiration.

Experience Bliss in the Spa

Kilkea Castle

Sneak away from the main castle and walk into an oasis that will exceed any expectations. Copper-hewn roofs, soundproof treatment rooms and a brand-new, state-of-the-art hydrotherapy room where you can whirl and swirl your cares away. The spa is for grownups only, but they do offer manicures and pedicures for guests under 18 in the Beauty Lounge.

Insiders Tip: They offer special treatments for expectant and nursing moms. Just ask!

Golf, Tennis & Other Pursuits

Kilkea Castle

If you've always wanted to golf in the shadow of a 12th century castle, Kilkea has got you. The 18-hole, Parkland Course is a favorite of locals who join as members, but guests can enjoy a round (or two) themselves. If you didn't pack your clubs, fear not: you can rent clubs starting at just 20 euros. The par 70 course includes hazards like the River Griese and two lakes.

Ask at the front desk for complimentary tennis rackets, and play a game just a short distance from the castle gardens. In addition, archery, falconry and equestrian pursuits can be arranged through the front desk. These are currently off-site, just a short drive (about 20 minutes) away or can be arranged on site for groups.

When to Visit

Amber Guetebier

Ireland has consistent weather year round. Autumn brings beautiful colors in the garden, at Christmas time the Castle is lavishly decorated, and in the spring and summer you'll find an explosion of color against the verdant grounds. There's really no bad time to visit Ireland or Kilkea Castle.

10 International Cities That Are Actually Kid Friendly

Just when we thought Grand Park couldn’t possibly get any better, they opened a whimsical new playground that looks as though it was plucked right out of a Dr. Seuss book. For families who already adore the Grand Park’s crazy popular “splash pad” at the historic fountain, this magical play space is giving us one more reason to fall in love with downtown all over again.

You’ll find the playground at the southeast end of Grand Park between Broadway and Spring Streets.  The new million dollar playground encourages pint-sized Angelenos to romp, explore and use their vivid imaginations to create fantastical adventures.

Rios Clementi Hale Studios (the original architect of Grand Park) designed the space to be truly one-of-a-kind, like nothing else you can find in the city. And it is.  Among the many highlights your wiggle worms can expect to enjoy are a custom 20 ft. high treehouse with a tall roller slide and a 12 ft. tube slide, along with three tiers of platforms tucked inside the climber. The soaring tower gives tots a realistic sense of what it’s like to climb a tree. With loads of ways for little ones to peer out, the treehouse offers a “kids-eye-view” of the sprawling park and breathtaking cityscape.

The floor of the playground is a super soft surface that resembles a forest floor with gigantic leaf shapes in colors inspired by nature. It also includes seven berms that range from 1ft. to 4 ft. tall with some featuring groovy extras like rock-climbing handles, a rope climber and tunnel that babes can scamper through. Down the road, outdoor musical instruments will be added to the area so little ones can create some jamz of their own while they play. (Your neighbors at home thank you for that.)

Gorgeous sycamore trees have also been placed around the playground and will ultimately grow together to create a continuous shade canopy – something LA parents will no doubt appreciate, during toasty summer months. Big leaves posted along the fence surrounding the playground feature the words “Let’s Play” translated into 24 of the languages you can hear in Los Angeles County. Just in case you needed a reminder or what an awesome and diverse city we live in.

Additionally, the playground (like the rest of Grand Park) is totally ADA accessible encouraging kiddos of all abilities to get out and join in the fun.

Hours: The playground maintains the same hours as Grand Park: 5:30 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Parking: While guests are welcome to park in Lot 10 on N. Broadway between First Street and Temple, we strongly encourage families to take the Metro Red/Purple Line to the Civic Center/Grand Park stop. It’s tons easier & cheaper (parking is $3/15 minutes or $10 on weekends and $20 on weekdays- ouch!) and gives rugrats a thrill.
