When we were young, grabbing a donut usually meant a trip to the nearest Krispy Kreme at a local strip mall. Fortunately for our kids, today’s donut runs hold a lot more appeal: artisanal bakeries in NYC have taken fried dough to a whole new level. Some focus on candy-covered and brunch-food inspired varieties. others insist on using entirely local ingredients. Prepare to drool as you click through our favorite NYC fry factories.

Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop

This old-school pastry shop in Greenpoint has grown a huge neighborhood following. And given its history, we’re not surprised! Owner Donna Siafakas opened the shop's doors more than 62 years ago with her husband, Christos, and still uses the same recipes today. The donuts might be old fashioned, but don’t be fooled: there are some truly funky options on the menu. Blueberry buttermilk, sour cream and honey dip will stand up to any of the “modern” alternatives. Added bonus: prices are much lower than your other choices. One donut will only set you back $1.10.
