Send your kite soaring at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s annual Kite Festival. See stunt-like performances of high-flying professionals as they demonstrate awesome feats of beauty and skill. Get inspired to make your own kite and fly it in the designated “Kite Festival” areas. The first 30 kids to register in the Gift of Wings tent will receive a kite to build and fly in the competition.

The Hinsdale-based West Suburban Symphony, under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductor Peter Lipari, performs an outdoor concert of rousing, popular American music, entitled Heartland. The concert features John Williams’ music from the 2012 movie Lincoln in honor of the Illinois Bicentennial, selections from Aaron Copland’s 1942 Rodeo ballet about romance on a ranch in the Southwest, and medleys of well-known American songs. The Cantigny grounds open at 6 p.m. for pre-concert picnics.

Explore the native history of Seattle’s waterways with Muckleshoot Tribe Historian Warren King George, aboard the SS VIRGINIA V. Learn about Coast Salish peoples’ traditional and current uses of Lake Union’s abundant natural resources and the ecosystem’s resiliency in the face of urban growth. All tickets include a complimentary tasting of salmon.

Located at Thornton A. Sullivan Park on Silver Lake, your family can plan a day at the beach and then cuddle in for a late night movie. Along with blockbuster titles, each movie will feature special pre-movie entertainment as well. Snacks will be available for purchase, but its cash only.

Two family-friendly movies will be shown this year on the 26′ inflatable screen in Columbia Park. On July 14, enjoy the Northwest Film Forum’s Best of the Fest of the Children’s International Film Festival which will showcase short films from around the world. Then, come back on Aug. 18 for the Disney/Pixar film, Coco. Concessions will be available and donations for the Rainier Valley Food Bank will gladly be accepted.

Get your wigs and costume on, find your Senpai and notice your Kohai while exploring great shops and restaurants in East and West Japantown Malls. Not sure what to do? Stop by Senpai booth to get Cosplay 101 from local cosplayers. Plus much, much more!

This enormously popular course consists of a mix of lecture, group discussion and hands-on practice which covers: safe job search, resumes, interviewing, professionalism, preparing for a job, decision-making, problem-solving, child development/ages and stages, age-appropriate activities, clear and constructive communication (with adults and children), dealing with difficult situations, basic care (diapering, toileting, feeding, burping, etc.), safety in and outside of the home/in the community, how to get help in an emergency, basic first aid (infant/child/adult conscious choking and bandaging). Includes handbook and completion card.​​ Snacks provided, please bring lunch and water bottle. All participants will be entered into a raffle to win a fully stocked Babysitter Bag!

Bring a blanket or lawn chair and join in the fun at this free summer movie night on the grass. Arrive at 7:30 p.m., snag a spot on the lawn and grab some refreshments (drinks, candy and freshly popped popcorn for just $1 a piece). At sundown, they’ll show the hit move, The Greatest Showman (PG), on a huge outdoor screen!
