Fall has arrived in all its splendor. Crisp, golden mornings and changing leaves mean a whole new kind of fun for Portland families who don’t slow down when the weather turns. Grab your calendar and get ready to pencil in a little something to do every day until winter arrives. From pumpkin picking to rock climbing, seasonal train rides and more; we’ve rounded up the best things to do with kids in Portland this fall. Read on for more.

1. Find the perfect pumpkin for the occasion at one of pumpkin patches. Don't forget to go on a hay ride or pet a friendly farm animal while you hunt for your future Jack-O"-Lantern. These pumpkin patches offer a whole lot more than a U-pick pumpkin experience. Turn your visit into a day-long experience!

2. Go on a special hunt at Kiyokawa Orchards for pink-on-the-inside apples, sure to please any princess-in-training. But don't stop there. Play this fun game when visiting Kiyokawa Orchards: challenge the kids to find the fruit with the craziest name, color, shape, or flavor. With over 120 varieties of apples, pears, and Asian pears, it won’t be hard.  

3. Take a spooky walk over a local suspension bridge to a 40 foot castle on the Fantasy Trail! The Fantasy Trail is over 1,000 feet of wooded walkway that is beautifully decorated for Halloween as well as the Christmas Season.

4. Score some awesome winter wearables for every kid in your family at one of these beloved consigment stores where you are sure to find the best deals around

5. Scoot over the bridge to Sauvie Island, where you can enjoy one last warm day on the sand, find a frog on a pond trail, or hit up some fall farms. 

6. Hit the trails with your wheels. Stroller wheels, that is. These paths are great for any season, but especially fall!

7. School is in, so mid-week getaways are a thing of the past. Upgrade your fall adventures when you strike out on a fantastic day trip for a change of scenery.

 

8. If there is one good thing that came out of COVID, it's that restaurants all around Portland have created amazing outdoor eating opportunities for the whole family. Even when the weather is colder. Check out one of these dining spots with heated patios.

9. Don the lab coats and perform some epic science experiments.

10. Bar-hop, family-style. There are breweries all over Portland that welcome kids. Some even have kids' areas!

11. Check out the fall colors at these stunning spots.

12. Cast a line at a new or favorite fishing spot.

13. Check out the visitor center at Tillamook Cheese Factory.

14. Water fun doesn't end with summer. Strap on your hiking boots and hunt for the splashiest waterfall on some of these great hikes.

16. Practice your perfect 300 game at your local bowling alley.

17. Your young anglers will love heading out to watch the salmon leap up the fish ladder at Bonneville Dam.

18. Soar, discover and explore in Astoria. If you haven't visited this beloved beach town on Oregon coast yet, now is the perfect time. Climb a column, zipline through the changing leaves, and visit a museum.

19. Sure you've got your favorite neighborhood park you frequent. But Portland is packed with destination playgrounds, you've likely never heard of. Discover awesome new playgrounds for your awesome kids 

20. Are your kids getting bored with inside time? Get some retail therapy, kid-style. Pack the house with some new toys from local shops we love!

21. You don't want to miss the opportunity to see all of Oregon in it's seasonal beauty. So, Hit the road on one of these epic fall road trips. 

22. Head to one of these cozy cabins for a fantastic family getaway! Stay warm by the fireplace after a day out exploring the PNW autumnal beauty.

24. Craft the perfect paper crown, monster, or giant airplane! 

25. Make s'mores over an epic bonfire when you camp at one of these seasonal camp spots. That's right, it's not to late in the season to pitch a tent (or hang in a yurt!) We promise.

26. Head to one of the Portland Farmer’s Markets  around town offering local fall harvest goodies. Try to find the most perfect apple you can. Winner gets to make apple cobbler!

27. Hunt for pinecones and make some treats for the birds, or get crafty with these options! 

28. Go on a dizzying adventure when you check out one of these corn mazes! After you are done, you may even find a friendly animal to play with or a treat for the hungry tummies in you crew.
