Hoot-n- Annie Children’s Resale just won a Totally Awesome Award for Most Sensational Resale Store in Portland. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!

Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Most Sensational Resale Store” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Hoot-n- Annie Children’s Resale: This business has been mainly owner operated and if I am unable to be there, the owner operated mentality shines through in my amazing staff. We are also always organized with a level of customer service where everyone is treated like a friend and we love providing quality items at price points everyone can feel good about!

RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
HACR: I was very stubborn when I got a new point of sale system and had to choose new tags. I did not want to give up our adorable logo for the plain tags. So I had them custom made and I love thinking that they are scattered about somewhere, on someone’s floor, under their fridge or in a drawer of a wonderful Portland area family.

RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
HACR: After 15 years in the medical field the passion started to fade. I had always wanted to have a business of my own and love the planning and design process. After my 3rd kiddo I started an online children’s resale store called Three Suns Children’s Resale and shipped all over the country. I still ached for a store front. Then shortly after my 4th child was born, I got a call from a friend saying that a local resale store was looking to sell. Later that same day another friend called saying her good friend owned a store and that she was looking for a new owner and thought I would be perfect for it! I met the owner within a few days and she said I needed to have the store! A dream came true in a blink of an eye and I have never looked back!

RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
HACR: Tall, non-fat, no-water, extra pump chai…since you asked.

RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
HACR: Choosing me. Choosing this store. Letting me watch their kiddos grow, sharing stories of motherhood, triumphs and struggles. It truly means the world to me to have so many supportive customers who frequent the store and pass along praises of us to other families.

RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
HACR: The constant soliciting. Thank goodness for caller ID!

RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
HACR: Being at the store is quite the stress reducer itself! Even when it is hectic, I have a rhythm that is very soothing. Music is great too as well as sipping on that sweet chai! Outside of the shop I decompress by planning. I love outlining plans and thinking about goals. I know, I’m nutty.

RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
HACR: Understanding. I try my best to understand what families need and how to make things less complicated. Understanding what my store’s needs are and what my staff’s needs are keeps everyone happy and in balance. Everything works better when we try to understand one another. No one answer is right. If issues ever arise, I listen and apply my ability to pause and understand where someone is coming from and to make things right.

RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
HACR: Go for it! If you want something, only you can make it happen. Only you can begin setting it in motion.

RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
HACR: Wait. Patience is a virtue. To me there is never an absolute right time for anything. Taking chances is the only way to make changes!

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
HACR: We currently have a color of the month that is either 30% or 50% off plus a coupon in the mobile Chinook Book! Our prices are already less than half of retail but if readers want to throw in a free pair of infant socks, mention this article and they are yours!
