A former newspaper food writer, she co-owns the PR agency Suzuki+Chou, which has local restaurants as clients. (Full disclosure: she also writes about food for Red Tricycle.) And as the mother of two toddlers, she spends plenty of time in her Magnolia kitchen cooking for her family. But Chou’s newest role in Seattle’s food scene is that of revolutionary, bringing free cooking lessons to kids.Yes, it’s part of that revolution. Chou was inspired by chef Jamie Oliver’s eye-opening TV series Food Revolution, and her local connections came in handy when she started Jamie Oliver Food Revolution Seattle (JOFRSEA), a grassroots effort to get more wholesome food into local homes.”It’s about cooking for yourself using recognizable whole ingredients,” says Chou. The first Teach A Kid To Cook Day was held in mid-April at the University District Farmers Market, where kids were taught by a chef to make simple crepes and crostinis. (The folks at Jamie Oliver Food Revolution heard about it and asked Chou to submit a video for their website. See it here.)Chou is currently scheduling more cooking classes at farmers markets, and is enlisting restaurants to offer free classes. The ultimate goal, says Chou, is to teach kids one simple recipe at a time. “If you teach the kids, they’ll teach the parents.”Want to join the revolution?-Kavita Varma-White Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to share on Copy (Opens in new window) Search more like this farmers marketrevolutionfoodteachcookingmake simplecheffree classessimple recipenewspapercooking classeskidroleuniversity Welcome to our Tinybeans family!
