Juice Bars & Smoothie Shops: Not Just for the Gym Anymore

Read next

We have a confession to make. Are you sitting down? While we absolutely love this juicing and smoothie trend that’s taking the world of moms by storm, we hate making them. Between prepping all the fruits and veggies and scrubbing each piece of the juicer afterwards to make sure it’s perfectly clean, our kids would probably be better off eating a handful of cold cereal straight from the box! But, enough with the juicer-whining because thankfully juice bars have moved out of the gyms, making it easy to grab a healthy, fruit and veggie-packed juice or smoothie for your kids and yourself. Go ahead – shove your juicer to the back of your kitchen cupboard – we won’t tell a soul.

Chaco Canyon Organic Café
With two locations – one in the U-District and one in West Seattle – Chaco Canyon is a favorite for families who want to eat out, but don’t want to sacrifice their organic, healthy eating habits. And for juices and smoothies, they take the cake… or, maybe we should say they take the kale? The Pure Bliss Juice is supposed to be an antidepressant and energizer and contains pineapple, spinach, apple, mint and wheatgrass – a great way to start your morning after taking your currently potty-training 4-year-old to the bathroom no less than 28 times the night before. And for the kiddos, check out the BYO (Build Your Own) smoothie and juice options. They can pick their fave ingredients and you can sneak in something green to the order when they aren’t looking. The West Seattle location has a kid’s food and smoothie menu, but both locations are kid-friendly.

Evolution Fresh
We don’t know if you’ve heard of this little local coffee company… Starbucks? Well, regardless of if you have or haven’t, they’ve launched a new juice brand, Evolution Fresh. Lucky for the Seattle area, the first stores have made their homes here. With two locations – Bellevue and downtown Seattle – they have both freshly made smoothies and juices, as well as bottled versions to take home to enjoy later. Try the Sweet Burn for yourself, guaranteed to stop your kids from taking sip after sip of your juice with ingredients such as cayenne pepper and ginger. And start out your kiddos on some fresh pineapple or blueberry juice – straight from the tap! Guess what? They even serve coffee for those of you who still need a morning caffeine fix with their juice.

Jus Bar
Located in the super cool Columbia City neighborhood, Jus Bar is blending up some serious juice and smoothie concoctions that will make you do a menu double-take. Check out the Blue Velvet Smoothie, which contains blueberry, AVOCADO, vanilla and apple juice – say what? Avocado in a smoothie? Who knew! We love that Jus Bar always features great seasonal ingredients in their juices and smoothies as well – perfect for kids who can’t get enough watermelon or peaches on those hot summer days. Jus Bar also serves sandwiches, salads and espresso, plus juice to-go in large glass containers that you can mix into your own smoothies at home… if you could find your blender that is.

Thrive Café
Healthy eaters of Seattle, Thrive is your mecca. The menu at Thrive is gluten-free, vegetarian, dairy-free, vegan, organic and raw… and delicious. As for their smoothies and juices, Thrive keeps it simple with just a handful of options for each that are easily customized by including add-ons. Plus, the kind staff at Thrive are happy to walk juice newbies through what to order and what things will taste like. Your kids will devour the Creamsicle (almond milk blended with sweet fruits, banana and agave) and your exhausted body, that has likely been exclusively eating the crusts of peanut butter sandwiches for the past two-years, will thank you for ordering a Nourish Smoothie (kale, banana, almond milk, dates, berries, celery and ice). Thrive Café also serves a full food menu for grabbing something to eat with your juice or smoothie.
