Are you ready for your favorite Frappuccino…sans straw? Get ready to say farewell to those bright green straws soon, because Starbucks will phase out all plastic straws by 2020. The announcement, made earlier this week, is part of a company-wide commitment to the environment and will include the introduction of all-new lids for your iced and hot beverages.

So how are we supposed to sip our cold brew iced coffee and shaken iced green tea without one of those handy little green straws? Well, it’s all in the cup. That’s right. Starbucks is solving the plastic waste problem that straws create by ditching the traditional design and making their lids strawless.

Currently the new lid is available in more than 8,000 Starbucks stores across the U.S. and Canada. The goal is to completely eliminate the straws, replacing them with the new lids, in over 28,000 company-operated and licensed stores around the globe.

Starbucks president and CEO Kevin Johnson said in a press release, “For our partners and customers, this is a significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways.”

Starbucks isn’t the only global food and beverage retailer that’s trying to reduce plastic waste. Even though straws aren’t solely responsible for the towering trash that makes up landfills or clogs our oceans, the single-use items that are pretty much unnecessary—especially when you have a specially designed lid!

In response to eco-issues surrounding straw use, fast food giant McDonalds is also doing away with the plastic tubes. Instead of a new lid, Micky D’s plans to replace their plastic straws with eco-friendly versions made from paper products.

When will your Starbucks have the new lid? Its hard to say. Stores in Seattle and Vancouver are the first to get the strawless option. That means if you live anywhere else, you’ll see the lids anytime between now and 2020!
