Breaking the bank doesn’t have to go hand-in-hand with out of town vacationing. Believe it or not, you can keep on inspiring your kids with out-of-this-world experiences while keeping your budget spreadsheet happy. See more for less with these wallet-friendly travel tips from our friends at Mom.me.

Beyond Airplanes

If you live on the East Coast, and you’re not going too far, consider taking a bus. Megabus would transport my family of five from New York City to Washington, D.C., and back, in June—for less than $50. Total. (For more on the wild world of bus travel, check out this article). Compare that to $343 for Amtrak and roughly $600 for an airplane. Of course, there’s the time factor. The bus drive takes 4 hours, 40 minutes. The train ride is 3 hours, 25 minutes. And the plane ride is 90 minutes (not counting time frittered away at airport security).
