Do You Need to Worry About Zika For Summer Travel Plans?

If you’re making plans to travel abroad in the next few months, you might be wondering if you need to worry about Zika on summer vacation. While cases of the mosquito-borne disease are in decline, you might still want to take precautions if you are traveling while pregnant.

Whether you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, the best option is to consult with your doctor before making any travel plans to destinations known to have Zika. “I think the best thing for people to do is to talk to their physician,” Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, a clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive services at Yale University School of Medicine told Time. Adding that if a pregnant woman asked for her advice about traveling to a place where Zika is spreading, she would likely tell her to consider skipping.

So how do you know which destinations are most at risk for Zika? The Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has released updated maps of the areas where Zika is currently known to be present. They also have a list of countries that were previously known to have Zika, but have since been cleared.

If you have no choice but to travel to place where Zika has been found, then you can take some precautions to avoid getting infected. Since Zika can be sexually transmitted, if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant the CDC recommends avoiding sex or using condoms while traveling and for at least two months afterward.
