Kid-Friendly Coffee Shops to Perk Up Your Day

Trending Now

The cold winds of winter continue to blow. The school schedule is erratic at best and everyone needs a break from the four walls they call home. It’s time to head out to one of the Districts many kid-friendly coffee shops to warm up and kick cabin fever to the curb. Next time you need a shot and only the caffeinated variety will do, load up the kids, find a friend and head over to one of these local shops to get your buzz on.

Soho Tea and Coffee
Seek refuge and settle into the cozy atmosphere in what feels like a home away from home at Soho Tea and Coffee. Just a short walk from the Dupont Circle Metro stop and right in the heart of the area the eclectic décor, homemade winter soups, and breakfast options all day long mix well with the fruit smoothies, yummy desserts and mismatched tables and chairs. It’s a great spot day or evening to meet up with friends when the babies are in tow.

2150 P St., NW
Open: Daily 7 a.m.-10 p.m.

The Potter’s House
Since the 1960s, The Potter’s House has been a fixture in Adams Morgan. This is a coffee shop/community space with a café and bookstore attached all in one. It is a place to get away and come together with your friends and neighbors. Share a cup or sip some soup on one of the comfy couches and chairs. It is the perfect place to find comfort and cheer with your coffee. Serving breakfast all day as well as mac and cheese (vegan version too) will put a smile on your little ones face too.

1658 Columbia Rd., NW
Open: Daily, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

St. Elmos Coffee Pub
This shop still ranks high on the list of buzz-worthy places to sip a cup of coffee or three while hanging out with friends and tiny tots alike. It’s like leaving your living room for their Del Ray one especially when your little one is an early riser because St. Elmo’s opens at 6 in the morning! Make sure to pick up an apple cider donut or three to start your day too.

2300 Mount Vernon Ave. (Alexandria, Va)
Open: Mon., 6 a.m.-6 p.m.; Tue., 6 a.m.-8 p.m.; Wed.-Fri., 6 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sat., 7 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sun., 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

Grounded Coffee Shop
Step into the light in this bright Alexandria-based shop located on Telegraph Road and let the smell of freshly baked French pastries waft over you. Settle in for some 100% fruit smoothies for the wee ones as you indulge in a croissant to go with your hot brew. A train table and board games will entertain your kiddos while you enjoy some down time.

6919 Telegraph Rd. (Alexandria, Va)
Open: Tue.-Fri,. 6 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sat., 7 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun., 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

Open City
Craving an omelet with your coffee…at 4 pm? Come here, where a hearty breakfast menu is offered all day. The highlight remains the coffee, though, which is strong and comes with animal crackers on the side. Order kiddo her own cup of warm goodness—whipped cream-topped hot chocolate, perhaps—so that she gets a personal cookie stash.

2331 Calvert St., NW (Woodley Park)
Open: Sun.-Thu., 6 a.m.-12 a.m.; Fri.-Sat., 6 a.m.-1 a.m.

Peregrine Espresso
It doesn’t hurt that this coffee microbrewery has received its fair share of accolades—including a “Top 10 Best Boutique Coffee Shop” from Bonappetit. The java is certainly top shelf, but what we love most is that the coffee kiosk is housed inside kid-friendly Union Market, a sprawling artisan market. Grab your pour-over and then mosey over to Co Co. Sala or Trickling Springs Creamery to treat kiddo to a piece of gourmet milk chocolate or a farm fresh ice cream cone.

1309 5th St., NE (Union Market)
Open: Tue.-Fri., 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Ebenezers Coffeehouse
Nestled on a quiet street in Capitol Hill that’s within walking distance of Union Station, this neighborhood-y shop serves up some tasty fair trade coffee and tea. Kids flock hear on Saturdays, when Ebenezers sometimes hosts live music from some of the DMV’s most beloved bambino bands, including Mr. Gabe and the Circle Time All-Stars and Rainbow Rock.

201 F St., NE (Capitol Hill)
Open: Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sat.-Sun., 8 a.m.-9 p.m.
