Bryce Resort

Mary Martha Aubry

About two hours from Washington, D.C., Bryce Resort in Bayse, VA is the perfect day-trip destination to teach the littles how to ski or to learn as an adult. Everything at Bryce is family-friendly, from their ski rental shop which opens directly to the Little Nip to the biergarten at the bottom of the mountain where mom and dad can take a load off in the Adirondack chairs while watching the littles take the magic carpet up the Bunny Hill and ski down. For a fun family run, take the whole crew up the quad lift and down Revenuer's Run and remember what you loved about skiing as a kid as you watch your littles make a pizza wedge and begin their own skiing journey! Speaking of pizza, enjoy a delicious pizza at the Copper Kettle for dinner before you take your final run down the hill.

Insider Tip: If you're skiing for the day, pack a bag with the kids pajamas for the ride home. It makes the transfer from car to bed that much easier, and after all that skiing, they'll be exhausted!

7 Ways to Make the Most of Snow Days

No, you don’t need to throw your baby an over-the-top blowout to have a special day marking their first birthday. If a party isn’t your thing, try these fun alternatives to mark your little one’s first year of life. From a day at the zoo to fun with balloons, here’s how to celebrate baby’s first birthday without a party but still with friends, relatives, or just your immediate family.

Playing with balloons is one option for how to celebrate first birthday without a party
iStock

Balloons!
On the big day, gather the best elements of a birthday party and have a family day celebrating with them. We're talking things like balloons, streamers, music, cake and lots of hugs and kisses. You'll make the day special for both of you and have lots of photo ops without all the stress and expense of a party.

Fishy Fun
Dive into a day of birthday fun with a trip to your local aquarium. Your baby will be mesmerized by all of the watery sights and sea creatures. (And mom and dad will be mesmerized watching baby!) Watching fish float by is fun, but we bet the dolphins, seals, sea otters and other marine mammals will be the biggest hits of the day. Don’t forget to visit the tide pool animals, too. Bonus: Children under two are usually free at most aquariums!

Festivals
Scope out local festivals, and then head out for a day of fun. (Red Tricycle's city guides always keep you in the know. And check local websites or Facebook groups for event calendars.) Your child will love taking in all of the sights and sounds that accompany a street festival. Music, people watching, new foods—the event promises to be as fun for mom and dad as it is for baby.

Suzanna Palmer

Go Wild
Your little one’s first birthday is the perfect time to head to the zoo. Kids love seeing animals they've read about in storybooks and making animal noises with you as you view the exhibits. All the new sights, sounds and smells will likely keep baby’s senses engaged, but bring a stroller or carrier for naps. Best spots for photo ops: The petting zoo, tram, carousel or kiddie train.

Art Project
Channel your little one's propensity for making messes into a work of art with a painting session. Gather some basic painting supplies from your local art supply store, like a small canvas, washable paints and a smock. Then, secure baby in a high chair and let the fun begin. Note the date and occasion on the back of the work of art; then find a place of honor to display baby’s first-birthday masterpiece.

Seasonal Celebration
Baby born during the fall? Head to an apple orchard where you can bounce along on a hayride and sip apple cider. If you have a winter baby, take a walking tour of your area’s best holiday lights. For babies born during spring or summer, visit an outdoor concert or botanical garden to celebrate the season along with baby's birthday.

Suzanna Palmer

Let Them Eat Cake!
Just because you aren’t planning a party doesn’t mean you should skip a cake. Having a smash cake sesh might just be the highlight of your little one’s day, and yours. Your baby is more likely to feel at ease—and dive face-first into the goodies—without dozens of eyes and cameras peering at them, like they'd have at a party. So bake up your favorite cake or pick one up at your local bakery and then dig in, baby!

Park It
Scope out the local parks for baby-appropriate offerings, such as bucket swings and paved walkways for strollers. Bonus points if the park has a water feature, such as a fountain or pond for fish, turtle or duck-watching. Pack a blanket and a picnic and enjoy a relaxing day together as a family.

Low-Key Playdate
Get your mommy & me crew together for a casual playdate at one of your usual haunts. Bring a snack (cupcakes, cookies or fruit) as a nod to the birthday babe, and let the kids play while you and the other moms celebrate that you got through your first year as a mom.

However you choose to toast your tot, make sure to capture all the special moments—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

If your family calendar is starting to look like a jigsaw puzzle of obligations and to-dos you might want to sprinkle in activities to intentionally slow down and enjoy time together as a family. We’ve rounded up super spots all over the city where you can eat, play, relax and connect with your clan. Scroll down to see where to pencil in a family date!

Harmumam Noodles & Buns has four locations throughout the county, with another on the way in Ocean Beach, and earned the title of most Instagrammed restaurant in San Diego for good reason. They've reimagined traditional Japanese recipes and infused them with a cute, modern flair in a fun and lively atmosphere. Offering a wide selection of savory noodle dishes, handcrafted character buns, and delicious bites, there is something for everyone to love. As they say — get your buns over there.

Insider Tip: They don't take reservations and tend to get very busy so opt for an early weeknight dinner if possible.

The convertible chair from Mac Sports is cooler than any Transformer in your toy box. It’s a two-in-one beach chair and wagon combo that give you a hand carrying all your beach accessories across the sand and then gives you a comfy spot to rest after.

The wagon chair is equipped with wide tires so it can roll smoothly across the sand, unlike those narrow stroller wheels. It can carry up to 100 pounds so you can toss in everything but the kitchen sink (or maybe that too).

Have Fun at Home with Little Tikes This Summer

Travel Destinations Ready to Welcome You This Summer

It is no secret that military men and women sacrifice a tremendous amount for our country and our freedom. Army, Navy, Air force, Marines, Coastguard, National Guard, all have a unique mission, but make sacrifices some cannot even fathom.

Their children however never even signed up for this life but make daily sacrifices as well and deserve to be recognized. April is Month of the Military Child! We proudly celebrate this month in our household because my children are military children. They have had to be resilient beyond their years at times and have risen to the occasion and overcome many challenges in their short life.

They have lived in three states in the past five years, gone a full year without their Dad at home, and just recently have been told they will be leaving Columbia and moving again this summer. They were not too happy about that and kept asking “Why?” The “Why” is because their Dad is in the military and unfortunately we have very little say in where we live; something that gets increasingly more challenging as kids get older.

My children made it very clear they love where we live. They love their school, friends, and neighborhood and they don’t want to move. Sadly it’s just part of military life and I would be lying if I said all of the upcoming changes didn’t keep me up at night. My kids don’t get to have that consistency other kids may have and that is very difficult. I moved around a lot growing up as well so I can relate to these big feelings. Having to start over in a new state is difficult at any age. The unknown can be scary. But if there’s one thing military children are—it is resilient!

They learn from a very young age that plans can change at any time and they have to make the best of an otherwise tough situation. When the military calls, their parent may leave for a few weeks, months, or even a year. So many feelings and emotions surround being a military family and I teach my children that it is healthy to talk about the struggles and to find others who can relate. Reaching out and finding other military children with similar experiences can be the biggest blessing in not feeling so alone on this journey.

There are of course so many positives to being a military child. For starters, my children get to live in many different places and see different parts of the country they otherwise would not even know existed. They have recently also learned about F16s up close and even sat in the cockpit during a special family day on base. This is a unique experience and one they will cherish for years to come.

As they get older my children are becoming more aware of the unique sacrifices their Dad makes and have great pride in what he does. They admire and look up to him and other men and women in uniform. He is their hero and I hope they grow up with a sense of pride and honor in being a military child. So this month and every month let’s celebrate the thousands of brave military children across the globe and the important role they play in our communities.

Caitlyn is a military spouse and mom to three children and one fur baby. She was an elementary school counselor before becoming a stay at home who enjoys coffee, hiking, and playing in the dirt with her kids.

A Familiar Name with an Outstanding Mission

Say it with us: families need support! Fortunately for families, the YMCA of Metro Chicago is committed to its community and has your back. As a nonprofit organization, their mission is to develop strong children, families and communities across the city of Chicago and suburbs through academic readiness, character development, violence prevention, and healthy living—impressive, right?

Much more than a fitness center, the YMCA may be what you need to navigate our new normal. Read on for four reasons why the Y is precisely where you want to be!

Ready to join today? Use code FAM15 when you join and receive $15 off the first month of a family membership (valid through 12/15/20). Or bring in your family to try out the Y by purchasing a family day pass at their front desks ($15 includes 2 adults, unlimited children) or by calling their Member Services team at 773-905-5115.

Family Values

For hundreds of years, parents have relied on the YMCA as a partner in helping to raise confident, healthy and community-minded citizens. Not just sports and after-school programs, the Y’s goal is to help kids create a positive identity, develop transferable life skills, healthy habits, and build career readiness.

The YMCA is here to help parents reach their wellness goals, too! Parents have the opportunity to get their sweat on with tons of classes to choose from while their kids are taking part in a class of their own. During regular operating, they even offer free childcare on-site with Kids Zone, offering a safe environment and trusted sitter for an hour or two.

(Accessible) Activities for All

The YMCA offers a wide variety of programs for the whole family, including early childhood education and care for children ages six weeks to six years, before and after school programs, daytime and overnight summer camp, swim lessons and premium fitness classes, to name a few.

We all know that the flexibility to squeeze in a workout around your day is crucial to keeping up with your health goals. A YMCA of Metro Chicago membership gives members access to 13 YMCA membership centers across the Chicagoland area, which means no more excuses—you can do it!

Community-Minded

The YMCA is committed to creating an inclusive environment and meeting all of today’s families’ needs. Their equally passionate staff prides itself on establishing a sense of community at their centers. The love is mutual—many of their members and program participants end up volunteering with Y programs.

The Y has long been a stronghold in communities across the country and the world. All are welcome at the Y regardless of race, religion, orientation, ability or socioeconomic background. The YMCA believes a family should never be denied access to their services because of an inability to pay and offers financial assistance to those in need.

COVID Response

As they’ve done for decades, the YMCA has rallied purposefully behind the city and the region to support families during difficult times. Even while locations were shut down, the Y continued its commitment to the community by sheltering the city’s homeless and displaced citizens, providing emergency child care for essential workers, and distributing food, diapers, and other critical supplies to residents in need.

Exciting news: They’ve reopened their centers with extensive precautionary measures, and are offering remote learning support programsFor more information on their reopening policies and procedures, as well as “Know Before You Go” information, please visit their Reopening Resource Center

Bishop Arts District is the perfect place to walk around with your family and take lots of Instagram worthy pictures. Shop at some unique stores and make sure you get a bite to eat. For some amazing barbecue, I recommend Lockhart Smokehouse BBQ and if you want something sweet be sure to stop at Picole Pops!

Dallas Zoo A day at the Dallas Zoo with your family will be a day well spent! Every animal you want to see is at this large zoo plus some extra experiences like giraffe feeding, petting zoo and play space for the kids to run around and climb. It was hot and rainy the day we went, but it didn’t ruin our day because there are so many shady and sheltered spots to cool off. Make sure to check out the Hillcrest Foundation Nature Exchange which is quite a unique swap shop!

Perot Museum of Nature and Science  This museum is level on level of space to learn and explore! There is so much here to engage the whole family and plenty of hands-on activities for your little scientists. Some things my kids enjoyed the most was building, experimenting with sound, learning about animals and experiencing virtual reality. Feel like watching a 3D movie at the museum? Well, you can at Perot’s movie theater! Plan on spending at least a few hours here so you can experience everything.

Dallas Museum of Art and Klyde Warren Park  These two activities are great together, because they are in walking distance of each other and they’re both free! The museum has a children’s section with an awesome giant peg board and, of course, lots of artwork to admire. The park has a playground and water play area for the kids to run around plus food trucks every day from 11am-4pm. Check https://www.klydewarrenpark.org for events to make your day there extra fun!

Trinity Groves This area has a wide variety of food options so you’ll have no problem finding a spot that satisfies everyone’s cravings! I would recommend trying Off Site Kitchen for some delicious burgers and Bingbox for a frozen treat. Be sure to take a walk after your meal to snap some pictures of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. As you walk along the pedestrian bridge beside Margaret Hunt Hill bridge, there are even random structures for kids to play and climb!

Addison Circle Visit Addison Circle during the day to hang out at the park and get a coffee at Astoria Caffe. We like to take advantage of the many grassy areas to play with a soccer ball or football. Walk around in the evening and enjoy dinner at Taco Borracho, The Lion & Crown or another one of the great restaurants that the area has to offer! Addison Circle also hosts great events like Oktoberfest and Kaboom Town.

Dallas World Aquarium  It doesn’t get much better than a family day at the aquarium! So many animals to see up close that I wasn’t expecting like penguins, a manatee and sharks. The manatee’s tank has a huge glass viewing wall so my kids watched in awe for a long time! We brought our stroller but wished we hadn’t because some areas were narrow and a little difficult to push it through. This Dallas must-see is the perfect indoor activity for a super hot or rainy day!

I’m Murphee, a wife, mom of two and ocean lover! Our little family recently began a new adventure that brought a big change for me: I went from Floridian early childhood teacher to stay-at-home mom in Texas. I love exploring with my young children, trying new food and road tripping.

Parents are looking for new ways to keep their kids occupied during their time at home during the COVDI-19 pandemic. Many companies are launching learning based initiatives. Now several automakers are now offering design-oriented projects.

Nissan North America is offering 23 downloadable coloring pages featuring Nissan classic cars, current models, futuristic concepts and some “cult classic” models, such as the Nissan Figaro and ChoiMobi.

“To draw, draw, draw, in our world, is one of the best ways to close the gap between wonderful creative impulses in your head and making it a reality – especially as we face this global pandemic together,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s senior vice president for global design in a video from his home promoting the initiative.

“Our team of designers, worldwide, are using this time to breathe, to draw, to dream creatively. I know that some of their best work will come from the challenges that we’re facing now. So we thought, ‘Why not give everyone a chance to express themselves creatively and share it with those who will appreciate it?’”

In the video, Albasia, along with his children, shows what he is working on. In the coming weeks, designers from his team will post their design inspirations, what they are currently working on, why they became car designers and how to break into the business.

Individuals can tag their drawings, from sidewalk art to napkin sketches to the downloaded coloring book pictures, with #drawdrawdraw.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating passion and creativity,” Albaisa says “Don’t be surprised if you see a Nissan designer comment on your drawings and artwork.”

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is encouraging a new generation of aspiring designers to bring their automotive dreams to life through the “Young Designer Competition.” They are calling on kids under age 16 to design their dream Rolls-Royce of the future.

The competition is an extension of the annual Rolls-Royce employees’ Family Day Celebration, held at the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. This year, Rolls-Royce is opening up the competition to a worldwide audience. The deadline for entries to be submitted is May 18.

The design team will judge all entries and select an overall winner who will receive a rendered illustration of their design as well as a chauffeur-driven journey in a Rolls-Royce Phantom for their first day back to school, with their best friend. Runners-up will receive a hand-signed certificate from Torsten Müller-Ötvös, the chief executive officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Ford Motor Co. recently posted an activity book online in early April including sketches of Mustangs and classic Fords to color. STEM activities are also in the works.

The automaker asks that parents share their kids’ work with social networks and use the hashtags #keeplearning, as well as #Fordemployees and #stayhome.

Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area

Hit the slopes to snowboard and ski at the 3,500 acres of Mammoth Mountain. You can tube it at Woolly's Tube Park, or even ride a snowmobile. A good family stay-over is The Village Lodge, where you can walk to the gondola and cook meals in a full kitchen. Your crew will be cozy in a two-bedroom condo which sleeps six. After a day of snow fun, warm up at the heated pool and five hot tubs. Another option is the Mammoth Creek Inn, although you'll need to shuttle to the slopes. Here you'll get a complimentary breakfast and the rooms can sleep six. Notably, there's a spa, steam room, sauna, gym and jacuzzi. Plus, the fam can play board games by the cozy lobby fire.

Big Bear Mountain Resort

Big Bear Mountain Resort

Big Bear Mountain is a winter wonderland full of activities and sports for your whole family. Whether your crew is full of beginners or advanced snow sports athletes, you'll find something for everyone. For example, beginning pint-sized shredders can take snowboard lessons (from four years old and up!) designed to make learning fun. On the other hand, more avid skiers and snowboarders can take a half or full day lesson at either Bear Mountain or Snow Summit.

Big Bear has a new Visitor's Center that's a great resource for families. Visit the permanent kiosk in the visitor center, where a Big Bear Mountain Resort representative is available daily to assist with lift ticket purchases and equipment fittings making for a seamless check-in process once you hit the slopes.

Also new and noteworthy: Big Bear Mountain Resort's Bear Mountain has expanded its sun deck from 13,000 sq. ft. to 26,000 sq. ft., creating additional space for outdoor seating, dining, special events/concerts and more.

Additionally, a perfect addition of off mountain activities is the new 2-story ropes course at Big Bear Snow Play: The 2-level ropes course, which opened in August, includes an 80-foot zip line and a number of challenges to reward and excite young and old alike. State-of-the-art safety harnesses will keep guests secure as they traverse the course, the first and only one of its kind in  Big Bear.

Don't miss a visit to the Bear Mountain Adventure Academy. It makes it easy on families by having kids' ski rentals, lift tickets and sports school registration in one spot. Further, there are fun things to do while waiting like coloring and a Burton snowboard practice game. Even more, you'll find food and drink including artisan pizzas, a full-service coffee bar and spirits. Also, you'll appreciate the parent viewing area where you can watch your half-pint learn to ski or snowboard.

On the other hand, if your snow angels want to skip the lift lines and go tubing, slide over to the Grizzly Ridge Tube Park at Snow Summit or Big Bear Snow Play (both with Magic Carpet conveyor belts) for easy downhill fun.

Another flurry of activities can be found at the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain. First, grab your little one and bobsled together down the 1/4 mile long mountain track. Second, ride the Soaring Eagle where you fly through the sky at up to 28 mph! Then, you can tube down the Alpine Slide and play in the snow. Finally, you can play miniature golf and try the go-karts. Your crew will have a blast!

Plus, two good places to stay as a family are The Lodge at Big Bear Lake with free Wi-Fi and a walk to the village or Big Bear Frontier where we recommend the cabins that sleep up to 12––and furry friends are welcome too.

Snow Drift Tubing Park

Minh-An C.

If you and the crew just want to tube for the day, this is your spot. SoCal's largest and oldest tubing park, you can have 'snow' much fun! It's a no-frills tube park with stairs to get to the top of the slopes. The cost is $20 per person, but kids 36 inches and under are free (with paying adult). Also, good to note that parking is ten dollars.

Snow Valley

Snow Valley

This smaller mountain is great for snow angels at the beginner or intermediate level. It's also less crowded than big brother mountain (Big Bear) which is 30 minutes further away. For the little ones, there's the Children's Learning Center with full and half-day classes where snow bunnies can learn to ski or snowboard (ages 4-12). Moreover, there's a snow play area where kiddos can sled for a fee. Another perk: kids six and under ski free (with a paid adult). You can do this trip up and back on the same day. However, if you decide to stay overnight, we recommend the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, with a fitness room and restaurant. (It's about a 30-minute drive).

Mountain High Ski Resort

Mountain High Ski Resort

For newbie skiers or shredders (or those just wanting to improve) Mountain High’s Children’s Academy will take snowboarders from four years-old and up and toddlers can try the virtual snow simulator which helps them to balance, stop and turn.  If your crew is looking for a different type of downhill fun, head to Yeti's Snow Park! You can also have a snowshoeing adventure or meet the Yeti & friends in the snow play zone. (There's a $20 parking fee for all vehicles).
