It looks like The Lion King and Aladdin aren’t the only Disney faves getting a live-action reboot. Recent reports set The Little Mermaid at the center of Disney’s soon-to-be filmed remakes, and rumors are swirling that one role in the under-the-sea adaptation is already filled!

According to Vanity Fair, Melissa McCarthy may nab the role of Ursula. The actress isn’t the first celeb rumored to have a shot at the Disney villain role.

Superstars such as Lizzo, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler surfaced as early front-runners for the part. But now, if the McCarthy rumors are true, these would-be vocalist villains won’t get a shot at remaking the Disney classic.

While there are no other cast member announcements as of yet, Rob Marshall is set to direct the film. Hamilton creator/star Lin-Manuel Miranda will reportedly work with original score composer Alan Menken on a new slate of songs for the rebooted flick.

As of now, there’s no information from Disney on a production schedule or release date.

With the new Disney adaptation opening in theaters, the reviews for Aladdin are rolling in––but they’re not all positive. One four-year-old had some very strong and adorably honest opinions about the new film.

Four-year-old Madison Jade thinks the damsel in distress story is a tired trope so she took to social media to give her review on the new Aladdin. In the video posted on Instagram, Madison explains, “Jasmine needs to go see the world by herself because you don’t need a boy to take you to see the whole world!” Wise words from this young preschooler.

Madison’s mom prompts her to explain her Aladdin theory asking, “Sometimes when we read your princess books, the prince will take the princess on an adventure, or he’ll save the day or he’ll rescue her, that’s a good thing, right?”

Her response is absolutely perfect, “Mommy… the princess doesn’t need a prince to rescue her, she can rescue herself.”

The post garnered thousands of likes with followers young and old giving her praise for her empowering words.

Roald Dahl fans get excited! The classic book and cult hit movie The Witches is hitting theaters next year.

You might remember the ‘90s version of The Witches starring Anjelica Huston, most notably for that gasp-inducing scene when Houston tears off her human disguise to reveal the ugly witch underneath. The movie was based on the Roald Dahl classic of the same name and now the story is getting a new big screen adaptation.

The film, which stars Anne Hathaway filling Huston’s big pointy shoes as the Grand High Witch, begins filming next week and officially has a release date. The film is now set to roll out in theaters on Oct. 16, 2020.

Director Robert Zemeckis who has lent his talents to some of the best films of all time (Back to the Future anyone?) also wrote the script which is said to stick more closely to the book than the first film adaptation.

Last summer the world held their collective breath as 12 boys from a youth Thai soccer team and their 25-year-old coach were rescued from the flooded Tham Luang caves. Nearly a year later, Netflix and SK Global Entertainment (the production company behind the wildly successful film Crazy Rich Asians) announced that a small-screen adaptation of the story is in the works!

While there’s no information on whether the true story of the soccer team will take the form of a full-length feature film or series, Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu and Bad Genius director Nattawut Poonpiriya are on board to helm the production.

Chu said, in a press statement, “Like the rest of the world, we were riveted by the news of the Thai cave rescue. With the entire globe watching, this tragic human drama transformed into a beautiful, inspirational story of human beings saving other human beings. Not only did this show the best of the human spirit overcoming even the worst of circumstances, it proved that we are stronger when we work together.”

Director Poonpiriya also added, “This is an opportunity for me as a filmmaker––and also a Thai citizen––to write a Thank you letter to the rest of the world.”

Even though there are no script specifics, Erika North, Director of International Originals at Netflix, said “The story combines so many unique local and universal themes which connected people from all walks of life, from all around the world. Thailand is a very important country for Netflix and we are looking forward to bringing this inspiring local but globally-resonant story of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds to life, once again, for global audiences.”

So when can you expect to see the film or possible series come to life? As of now, there is no current release date, so stay tuned!

Get ready for a new Netflix children’s show—from the Obamas. That’s right, the former POTUS and FLOTUS are bringing your preschooler something new to stream. And that’s not all!

Higher Ground Productions, a production company launched by President and Mrs. Obama last year, recently announced a seven-project deal with Netflix. Along with the upcoming children’s show, the Obama’s company will bring parents plenty of picks, including a film adaptation of David W. Blight’s Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, a scripted anthology based on The New York Times‘ Overlooked column, a non-fiction series about everyday heroes and Crip Camp (a feature-length documentary about a summer camp for disabled teens in the 1970s).

Mrs. Obama said, in a press statement about the new productions, “We love this slate because it spans so many different interests and experiences, yet it’s all woven together with stories that are relevant to our daily lives.” the former first-lady went on to add, “We think there’s something here for everyone—moms and dads, curious kids, and anyone simply looking for an engaging, uplifting watch at the end of a busy day. We can’t wait to see these projects come to life — and the conversations they’ll generate.”

So what do we know about the Obama’s new children’s show? According to Netflix, the program (titled Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents) is a half-hour series for preschoolers that will take your kiddos on a culinary-focused trip around the world.

As of now there is no release date for the new Obama/Netflix projects.

Your fave female detective is back at it again. The recently-released Nancy Drew movie, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, takes the original 1939 story by Carolyn Keene and updates it for a modern YA audience.

Chances are you read your fair share of Nancy Drew novels as a child. And it’s also just as likely that your mom—and possibly grandmother—did the same. Now the daring Drew is ready to meet your own kiddo in this old-but-new story.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase follows the fearless female lead as she moves to the oh-so-small and not-so-interesting fictional town River Heights. The 2019 adaptation, which debuted in theaters on Mar. 15, stars a red-headed Sophia Lillis (who you may remember from the super-scary IT) as Drew.

The millennial-ized character still retains her feisty nature, with plenty of intellect, independence and so much more.

If you haven’t seen the new flick, or if you have and you just want more, check out this behind-the-scenes look at Twin Elms, on which the film’s central spookiness focuses. In the YouTube clip, Lillis takes us all on a sneak peek tour of the house—and it totally doesn’t disappoint.

The Live-Action “Dora the Explorer” Trailer Is Here & It’s Definitely Not for Little Kids

Holy flying carpets: Disney just dropped the first full Aladdin trailer—and it’s majorly magical. Not only that, they must have heard fans’ biggest wish when it came to how actor Will Smith appears as the Genie. Read on for all the deets.

The much-anticipated live-action adaptation of the 1992 classic is almost here. Aladdin is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott as Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, respectively, along with Marwen Kent as Jafar and Frank Welker as the voice of Abu. As the trailer reveals, this CGI-heavy flick looks like it’s absolutely everything we expected. There’s also a big surprise in the trailer, too—can you spot it?

Smith as the Genie certainly looks different than his character’s initial big reveal during the Oscars last month. Fans came out in force criticizing Disney’s choice of Smith as an all-blue Genie via CGI effects. While the Genie is still blue, it looks like Smith dons a more earthly, natural skin tone for part of the movie, too.

Not only does the full-length trailer give us the rundown of the story, but it also brings back the beloved duet, “A Whole New World.” Disney’s Aladdin hits theaters May 24.

The animation universe is about to expand as the voyagers of the Starship Enterprise get ready to seek out new life and new civilizations—in cartoon form! Nickelodeon has just announced a new animated Star Trek series for kids and beam us up, Scotty!

While there are no details on the plot or style of the show, it will likely feature plenty of laughs as it is being written by Kevin and Dan Hageman whose credits include The LEGO Movie and Hotel Transylvania. This actually won’t be the first animated adaptation of the epic franchise. Star Trek: The Animated Series ran for one season in 1973.

The details on the new series are sparse, but like many of the animated Star Wars spin-offs it will be tailored for younger audiences to air on Nickelodeon’s networks. No word yet on when the series will premiere.

We hope this new show will live longer and prosper than its 1973 counterpart!

So what can you expect from the next year when it comes to page-to-screen adaptations? Read on to get a rundown on these page turners-turned box office blockbusters.

Little Women

Yes, this isn’t exactly the first time we’ve seen the Louisa May Alcott classic on the big screen. (Who could forget Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Bale and Susan Sarandon in the 1994 version?) In 2019, the book-turned-film is back with a version from Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig. The film is set to star Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Timothee Chalamet. Look for a Christmas 2019 release.

Artemis Fowl

The YA novel is making its way to the big screen with a slated Aug.9, 2019 release date. Starring Josh Gad, Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonell, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Hong Chau and Judi Dench (and directed by Kenneth Branagh), this Disney flick is perfect for your older kiddo and tweens.

A Dog’s Way Home

The movie adaptation of the W. Bruce Cameron novel stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Ashley Judd. Catch this pup-centered poignant film starting Jan. 11, 2019.

Greyhound

Starring Tom Hanks and Elisabeth Shue, this historic WWII flick adapted from C.S. Forester’s novel The Good Shepherd isn’t for the littles—reserve this viewing experience for your teens.

The Sun Is Also a Star

Again, this is another book-to-movie pick for 2019 that is for teens (and you, of course). The theatrical adaptation of the YA novel by Nicola Yoon follows the story of a young woman as her family faces deportation.

Call of the Wild

The Jack London classic gets some serious CGI treatment in this live-action sure-to-be box office blockbuster. The film stars Harrison Ford, Karen Gillan and Dan Stevens. Like Little Women, we’ll have to wait for this one, as Call of the Wild has a Christmas 2019 release.

Immersive theater experiences for adults have been all the rage in NYC for a while now. Whether you want to wander through an adaptation of Macbeth in a swanky hotel environment in the Meatpacking District, enjoy a decadent dinner in a mystery location upstate, or go down a rabbit hole in Williamsburg, that and much more can happen. Unfortunately, these productions aren’t really appropriate for — or more to the point, appealing to — kids. No more! Accomplice, an adventure theater company with years of experience creating interactive shows for adults, just debuted its offering for kids, and we think it’s gonna blow a lot of little minds.

photo: Accomplice

What is Accomplice?
The creation of New Yorker Betsey Salamon, Accomplice describes itself as “an interactive theater group that blends the fun of a scavenger hunt with smart improvisational theater for a one of a kind experience.”

The group’s original production, Accomplice New York, which launched in 2004 and continues to run, leads groups of adults on a two-hour tour/adventure through lower Manhattan. Along the way, audience members meet curious characters (i.e. experienced improv actors), find clues and solve puzzles. The shows are a hit with both native New Yorkers and tourists alike, and most people will tell you that the less you know going into one of these shows, the better. (The company is also launching a new ladies’ night out Cinderella-inspired adventure, The Quest for the Missing Slipper, which leads audience members on a hunt through the Meatpacking District, with stops for cocktails and chocolate along the way.)

Accomplice: The Kids Version
Sounds like something kids would flip for, right? Starting this month, Accomplice is staging an immersive interactive theater production specifically created for children entitled, The Quest for the Seven Teeth.

The approximately two-hour adventure runs rain or shine in Central Park, and finds kids assisting the Tooth Fairy’s cousin Franklin as he seeks to replace some teeth he unfortunately lost. Participants engage on a fanciful quest that uses crafts, puzzles and games to help Franklin solve his problem — and move the story along.

The show is designed for kids ages six to 11 years old, but can be adjusted as appropriate. Even better, the names and tastes of the kids along for the ride can be incorporated into the “show” for a ultra-personalized (and fun) experience.

Accomplice: The Cost
Having a Choose-your-Own-Adventure type party — birthday or otherwise — will probably not be the cheapest bash you’ve ever thrown for your child, but we’re guessing it might be one of the more memorable.

The Quest For the Seven Teeth costs $1,000 based on a group booking of 10 children, who can be accompanied by up to five adults.
