How have you been dealing with the added stresses the pandemic, distance learning, and working remotely? Fintech company, Self Financial, asked over 1,000 Americans how their finances and mental wellbeing were connected in a series of questions to uncover the true cost of mental health. It turns out that people are spending an average of $287 a month on their mental health from direct and indirect sources.
1,066 Americans from across all states, with a range of financial backgrounds, were polled using Amazon’s survey platform from Jun. 29 to Jul. 4 on a range of questions about their financial and mental wellbeing.
The most popular indirect methods people are spending their money on for the benefit of their mental health are TV and streaming services (51.5%), socializing (48%), music streaming (44%), and food and drink (43%). In terms of direct methods, 72% of our respondents utilize counseling, 24% use mental health apps and 19% use sports and exercise as a means of looking after their mental wellbeing.
When asked about their experience during the global pandemic specifically, almost 1 in 5 (18%) said that TV streaming like Netflix and Disney+ was one of the three most important things for their mental health to combat the effects of COVID-19. This was found to be more important than counseling, mental health apps and podcasts, alcohol, journals, and music.
Despite streaming’s positive effects on viewers, 81.3% of people said that their mental health will ‘definitely’ improve after the pandemic is over.
Kristie Norwood, PhD, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist said, “Television shows can serve as a mechanism for people to mentally avoid dealing with everyday life challenges, remain connected to popular culture, experience positive emotions, and validate aspects of their lives. Through portrayed character experiences, viewers are able to feel a sense of internal connection, validation and normalization when their personal life situations are displayed; this pleasant connection and gratification often triggers dopamine in the brain which causes the behavioral response of continuous streaming, also known as “binge-watching.”

Summer sports may seem like a swing and a miss these days. But one game that lends itself to social distancing? Golf lessons for your pint-sized putters. We’ve uncovered some awesome golf camps and instructors around town that are open for business, with safety measures firmly established. Read on for all the details and get ready for an above par summer!
With more than half a dozen Southern California locations to choose from, Golf Tec makes it easy to find a great teacher for your golf-loving tot! Best to contact them directly for accurate pricing which can vary depending on the location.
Ages: While there are no age minimums in place, they usually teach kids ages 8 and up.
Covid considerations: Golf Tec has put a ton of new safety procedures into place for all budding golfers such as masks required for both teacher and student, reducing the number of people in the facility at any given time, and hand sanitizer pumps available at all teaching bays.
From now through September 4, get your mini Mickelsons signed up for personalized golf instruction from one of LA's finest at the Rancho Park Golf Academy. Their "Golf Outings With Derrick" classes are taught by former PGA golf pro Derrick Allen (who has also taught the likes of Bill Clinton, Morgan Freeman, and David Duchovney to name a few!). These outings are scheduled Monday - Friday each week, 3 sessions per day and each session is 2.5 hours long with only 3 kiddos in a session at a time. Prices range from $165/per student per day for a 3 student session to $375 per day for a one-student/private golf outing with Derrick! Check out the website for more details on how to get the little golf pros in your family signed up!
Ages: 5 - 16.
Covid considerations: To adhere to state-mandated safety measures, there can only be a maximum of 3 students per session, students must bring and wear their own protective masks, no sharing of supplies, hand washing, and sanitizing often and 6 feet of distance between everyone involved.
If private lessons are a bit more than you were looking to spend, there actually is a golf camp running this Summer and you can find it either at the Sepulveda Golf Complex located on the Encino/Balboa golf courses or in Van Nuys at the Van Nuys course. PGA Junior Golf camps are offering both half-day (best for beginners) and full-day (geared more toward the advanced player) experiences with hands-on instruction from certified PGA professionals for a fraction of the cost of private lessons. Here your little birdies will learn basic golf skills while they have a blast playing engaging games and activities.
Encino/Balboa: Your tiny Tigers are in good hands here with coaches/camp directors Riley Michaelis and Dan Martin who have years of experience with both professional golfing and with instructing others! Camp runs from July 27 - August 7 with the half-day camp (3 hours) at $295/week and full-day camp (7 hours) is $495/week.
Van Nuys: PGA member Wayne Tyni wants to make sure all junior golfers enjoy themselves on the golf course so there is no doubt his campers are in for an ace of a time! Camp runs from August 3 - 7 and costs $250/week for half-day instruction and $495/week for a full 7 hours.
Ages: The half-day camp is specifically for kids ages 6-13 while the full-day camp is aimed at ages 9-16.
Covid considerations: Safety is PGA Golf Camps' biggest concern with rules in place to keep everyone safe such as 6 feet between campers at all times, no sharing of equipment, and mandatory hand washing/sanitizing every 60 minutes (and more!).
Another PGA golf pro offering private lessons, Ayumi Hori has years of experience teaching the younger set and even recently won "Best Teacher in the State of California" from Golf Digest magazine (so you know you're small swingers are in good hands)! Her first experience with your kiddo will be an introductory evaluation and swing analysis where she will be able to gauge ability and from there will tailor each individual lesson to make sure you're getting the right bang for your buck. Ayumi teaches her private lessons at the Encino Balboa golf course and prices range from $85 for a 30-minute lesson to $125 for an hour session. If you have a real putter-in-training on your hands, it's most cost-effective to purchase one of her package deals which also range from $440 for 8 lessons at 30 minutes each or $680 for 8 lessons at one hour each. If your wee one is 6 and under, prices drop to $396 for 8 30-minute lessons or $612 for 8 60-minute lessons!
Ages: All ages
Covid considerations: Masks for both instructor and student are required and everyone tries to stay at least 6 feet apart during the lesson. At the course, every other stall is blocked off with caution tape so your student will certainly be 20 feet apart from the person hitting behind and in front of them! Ayumi also carries disinfecting wipes and rubbing alcohol with her at all times to make sure everything is sanitized before use!
If you’ve hard a hard time finding hand sanitizer lately, your troubles are about to come to an end. Sanikind, the first of its kind refillable hand sanitizer spritzer, is about to make your life a whole lot easier.
Made from recycled ocean-bound plastic that is sourced by cleanup crews in Haiti, the refillable and reusable hand sanitizer holds enough for 250 sprays! It is WHO, FDA and CDC approved and each one helps eliminate 16 single-use plastic bottles.
Sanikind hand sanitizer is 80 percent alcohol, dries quickly and can be sprayed on any surface for fast sanitizing. When you run out, you can refill with the company’s aluminum bottles, made from 70 percent recycled material.
Right now, the product is in fundraising mode over on Kickstarter, where it has already raised more than nine times its goal! When it launches, you’ll be able to also sign up for a subscription so you’ll never be without hand sanitizer again.
The key-chain sized sanitizing kit also comes with a carabiner for easy carrying. The Kickstart campaign ends Jul. 24.
Many people are relying on Instacart to get groceries and household essentials. For many people, shopping goes beyond produce, meat and pantry staples, it also includes getting much needed medications. Costco prescription delivery via Instacart is now available nationally from more than 500 Costco pharmacies across 42 states including Washington, D.C., with nearly 100% coverage in each state.
The new offering allows Costco members and customers to complete their entire shopping trip online — from groceries and household goods to alcohol* and essential prescription medications — and have it all delivered to their door.
Costco members and customers should arrange for their prescription to be filled at their local, participating Costco location either over the phone, online or in-person. Once the prescription is ready, the customer will receive a text message from their Costco pharmacy. In the text, they will see a link with the option to schedule their prescription for delivery. Once the customer clicks the link, they will be redirected to Costco’s site where the customer can confirm their prescription, sign into their Costco or Instacart account and continue to add groceries and household goods to their order if they choose. When the customer is ready to check out, they can select a delivery time and receive their order as fast as same-day.
Instacart is offering contactless prescription delivery in participating states for most medications, allowing shoppers to simply scan a customer’s ID for verification without a signature. Customers ordering prescription medications from Costco via Instacart must be over the age of 18, and are required to enter their date of birth at checkout and present a valid government ID at the time of delivery. In the coming weeks, the service will roll out an additional opt-in customer identity verification feature. It will allow customers to scan their own ID via the Instacart app and sign their own personal mobile device at delivery to verify their identity. Shoppers will still need to visually confirm that the ID belongs to the customer, but they can do this from six feet apart.
Shoppers pick up and deliver all prescription orders in a sealed, tamper-proof bag. Instacart’s prescription delivery service allows Costco members and customers to schedule delivery up to one week in advance. To ensure customers receive their prescription in a timely manner, Instacart recommends customers schedule their delivery as soon as they receive notification that their medication is available for pickup. In order to ensure a seamless prescription delivery experience for customers and shoppers, Instacart has dedicated a special care team to manage any relevant prescription-related inquiries.
Enter your zip code on Instacart or the mobile app to see if prescription delivery is available from a Costco pharmacy location near you.

When you don’t have time to grocery shop, let alone the time to wait around for a delivery, Instacart Pickup is the answer you’ve been looking for.
Being a mom often means shuttling from one place to another, whether it’s the school drop off line, work, soccer games, pick-ups from friends houses or any of the other dozens of things you drive your kids to and from. Now you can fill your trunk with groceries in the time it takes you to drive from one place to the next thanks to Instacart Pickup.
After a slow roll out to select cities, Instacart Pickup has officially launched to all Instacart customers across the United States and Canada. This new Instacart function gives users the ability to place a grocery order through the app and pick it up, rather than having it delivered. While many major grocery chains already offer their own pickup services, Instacart’s includes some unique features that are especially helpful to busy parents.
One of the best new features is the “Pick Your Pickup” Mapping, which allows users to select a pickup location most convenient to their route that day. Another helpful feature is the “On the Way” Alert, which allows users to enable location-based notifications to let the store know when they’re on the way and getting close. This means less time to wait on your items curbside when you arrive.
In addition to these features, Instacart Pickup also allows you to assign a friend or family member to pickup items and alcohol pickup is now available at more than 20 major chains including Aldi, BevMo!, Publix, Save Mart, Sprouts and Wegmans.
