An expectant mom’s alcohol consumption during pregnancy has long been linked to developmental problems and congenital defects in babies, but new research suggests that dads-to-be should cut out alcohol as well before the baby is even conceived.

The new study published by the Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that dads who drank during the three months before conception were 44 percent more likely to have babies born with congenital heart disease than compared with non-drinkers. The amount of alcohol consumed was also significant to the findings that dads who were considered binge drinkers (five or more drinks per day) were 52 percent more likely to have a baby with a congenital heart defect.

Moms weren’t off the hook for their drinking prior to conception either. The study found that moms who drank or were binge drinkers prior to pregnancy were 16 percent more likely to give birth to a baby with congenital heart disease.

“Binge drinking by would-be parents is a high risk and dangerous behaviour that not only may increase the chance of their baby being born with a heart defect, but also greatly damages their own health,” study author Jiabi Qin, of Xiangya School of Public Health, Central South University, Changsha, China, said in a statement reported by CNN.

Since it’s impossible to exactly predict when conception might occur, Qin suggests that to be safe men should abstain from drinking at least six months prior to when they plan to conceive and women should hold off for a year.

The study was based on analysis of existing data so there was no evidence drawn to explain the causation. However, previous research has shown that alcohol changes the DNA in developing sperm and changes sperm activity.

New Study Sheds Light On How Toddler’s Develop Language Skills

A recent study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal may have found a reason for you to put down the pinot.

After reviewing data from over 40,000 participants in the United States and China, researchers found women who quit drinking have an increase in mental well-being. A comparison of men and women who drink, quit drinking and have always abstained from drinking found that those who never drank had the highest levels of well-being. But when women stopped drinking, something very interesting happened.

photo: Elle Hughes via Pexels

The women in both the U.S. and Chinese groups who started as moderate drinkers and quit during the study period showed the most significant improvements in mental health (in comparison to the other groups). This means the participants who stopped all alcohol consumption had greater improvements in overall well-being than those who started the study as non-drinkers.

What does this mean for you? If you down a glass of rosé on girls’ night or on your summer beach vaycay, dropping the drink probably won’t do much. But if you regularly drink moderate amounts of alcohol (in the study’s terms—seven or less drinks per week), you may get a well-being boost from going dry.

Calling all bargain shoppers! Fave discount retailer Dollar Tree may raise its prices—and soon. Even though Dollar Tree has stayed true to its name, selling everything for a dollar, it looks like that may change.

Rumors swirled last spring, citing the potential for price changes. According to recent reports, Dollar Tree is indeed testing a new line that departs from the previous everything’s $1 model. The new collection, called Dollar Tree Plus!, will feature price points outside of the retailer’s well-known low, low, low range.

Gary Philbin, President and Chief Executive Officer, said in a press statement, “We are excited to kick off the initial introduction of Dollar Tree Plus! multi-price point products into select test stores. These products are designed to provide our shoppers with More Choices, More Sizes and More Savings. We are in the process of expanding this test to more than 100 Dollar Tree stores.”

Philbin also added, “With its ‘Everything’s a Dollar’ model, Dollar Tree has remained one of the most unique, differentiated and defensible brand concepts in all of value retail. However, we have always been a ‘test-and-learn’ organization that is committed to evaluating all opportunities to deliver great value for our customers while driving long-term value creation.”

New prices aren’t the only changes coming to stores under the Dollar Tree umbrella. The company’s Family Dollar brand recently made news, debuting its plans to sell alcohol in nearly 1,000 stores!

Costco Has Wine Popsicles & BRB We’re Starting Summer Now

Your summer is about to get that much better. Even though some serious vaycay time is still a month or so away, Costco is getting ready for the season with boozy wine-infused ice pops!

The perfect-for-summer pops were first spotted by Instagrammer @thecostcoconnoisseur at a Washington D.C. Costco. We can only hope the warehouse retailer brings the goodness to stores nationwide.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw6_6H6hjFi/

This isn’t the first time Costco has treated us to adult-flavored frozen treats. Last summer’s Slim Chillers pops were a hit that’s making a rumored return this year. Unlike these vodka-based pops, Claffey’s Frozen Cocktails are pops made with wine.

The pops come in 12-count boxes and include apple, cherry, lemonade, blue raspberry, mango and grape flavors. The slushy summer treat is six percent alcohol by volume, making them about as strong as an average beer.

According to the recent IG post, Costco is selling the pops for $17.99. But, as of now, the delish summer treats aren’t available at all stores. If your Costco doesn’t sell the wine pops, visit Claffey’s Frozen Cocktails website for more buying info.

Summer Is Coming Early, Courtesy of Dunkin’s New Iced Coffee Beer

The New Candy That May Replace Your Morning Cup of Coffee

As summer approaches, we all look forward to spending time at the pool, river, or beach. Fun in the sun and water sports are a great was for families to spend time together but it’s important to be water safe. It’s easy to focus on snacks, sunscreen and water toys, but drowning is the second most frequent cause of death for children up to age 14. It’s important to role model water safety behaviors as well as teach older children how to protect themselves and keep help watch younger children.

1. Dedicated Watcher.
When children are in or near the water, have a dedicated adult keep watch. It only takes a few minutes to silently drown so having someone watch at all times it vital. While others unpack the car, set up the chairs, grab snacks, or get the kayaks ready, make sure all children are either out of the water or directly supervised.

Direct supervision requires an effort to remove distractions. Cell phones should be put away, ear buds should be taken out or the speaker volume for music should be set to low. Conversations with others should allow for your focus to be on the children with your chair or standing position such that you can see the children at all times. It’s easy to get distracted with a quick call or searching for a snack in a beach or pool bag but these can be the precious seconds or minutes when your attention is needed to save a child who needs helps in the water. Remember that parents and caregivers are responsible for the safety of children in your care, even if there are lifeguards.

2. Wear Life Jackets.
It is important to Invest in proper-fitting, Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices or PFD’s which are also called life vests or life jackets. The most popular PFD is a puddle jumper. No matter which st‌yle you choose, check the PFD for the proper weight range, comfortable fit, and especially a stable face-up position in water.

You should test your PFD in a swimming pool with the infant or child. To check for a good fit, pick the child up by the shoulders of the PFD. If the PFD fits right, the child’s chin and ears will not slip through. Parents and care givers should remember that inflatable toys and rafts should not be used in place of life jackets. If children are not wearing a life jacket, watchers should be in the water with the children, no more than arm’s length away.

3. Listen to Lifeguards.
Whether at the beach, visiting a lake, or heading to our community pool, always swim in designated areas with lifeguards. Lifeguards are often employed on a 1:100 ratio based on the expectation that parents or care givers will provide direct supervision of their children. Children under 10 years old must be accompanied and constantly supervised by a parent or care giver over 16 years of age. It’s important for adults role model appropriate behavior by following all lifeguard instructions and ensuring their children are respectful of the rules.

4. Respect the Environment and Aquatic Life.
When planning a day of fun on the water, it’s important to check the weather conditions. Adverse weather includes a high heat index or thunderstorms as they may impact water activities. As a storm or thunderstorm approaches, pools and other activities should be stopped, and the water evacuated when there is a threat of a lightning strike

Whether at the river or beach, it’s important to assess the conditions and be respectful of all aquatic life. Different beaches and states have different colored flags and assigned meanings, so be sure to ask the lifeguard if you’re not sure what the flags signify. In general, red flags indicated the beach may be closed or there is a high hazard caused by surf or strong currents. Yellow flags indicate a moderate hazard and that waters may be rough, and care should be taken if you are not a strong swimmer. Green means low hazard with calm conditions but be aware that currents will naturally push you down the shore. A purple flag indicates there is potentially dangerous marine life such as jellyfish which have been spotted in the area.

Many enjoy visiting the beach but please leave all animals alone including sea stars, sand dollars, and animals in seashells. Teach children to look at the wildlife without interfering or touching. When handled by humans, even when handled gently, these delicate animals are often so severely injured, the interaction leads to their death.

5. Limit Alcohol.
Adults often enjoy the summertime and water sports with alcoholic beverages including beer, wine, and liquors. For everyone’s safety, avoid drinking alcohol before or during swimming, boating, water skiing, and other water sports. Do not drink alcohol while supervising children as alcohol reduces balance, coordination, and judgment, and its effects are heightened by sun exposure and heat.

6. Know and Teach Swimming Skills.
Teaching children to swim can be a fun activity for both the adults and the children. Children ages 2 to 4 years old are coordinated enough to being learning to swim. Kids under 4 years old and who do not know how to swim should wear life jacket, even in the pool. Kids over 4 years old should take swimming lessons. As children learn water skills, remember that they are not yet strong or independent swimmers and still require full supervision. Don’t assume that a child who knows how to swim isn’t at risk for drowning. All kids need to be supervised in the water, no matter what their swimming skills.

Water play is an important part of summer fun and these tips will help you safety enjoy the local pool or beach!

As a single mom, I needed help caring for my son. I searched for credentials that identified professional nannies, but struggled to find a licensed nanny training program. Your Mother’s Day is about to be amazing––that is if your S.O. remembers to pick up a bottle of Aldi’s infamous Côtes de Provence French Rosé. The beloved bottles are coming back to the retailer, and just in time to celebrate mamas like you!

This rad Rosé first made waves when it launched in 2016 in the United Kingdom market. The following year it skyrocketed to U.S. success, selling out in 2017. But the love for Aldi’s low-cost wine didn’t end there.

When the retailer brought the French Rosé back in 2018, it sold out yet again. And what does that mean for 2019 Aldi wine shoppers? The popular pick, which Aldi recently advertised as a “week of May 8 find,” is likely to fly off shelves again.

So if you’re ready for a refreshing Rosé, pick up your bottle early. The fine wine retails for $7.99 but the price may vary at your local Aldi depending on state and local alcohol-related laws. Check the Aldi website here to find out if your store carries the perfectly pink Côtes de Provence French Rosé.
