Plenty of evidence shows that swaddling, when used correctly, can be a tremendous way to promote safe sleeping. The Safe Sleep Guidelines from the American Association of Pediatrics are clear: swaddling helps to keep babies on their back, which is the ideal sleep position to assist in preventing SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Since the guidelines also recommend that there be no blankets, pillows or bumper pads in the crib, your baby needs to be swaddled in a correct and optimal manner. Properly done, the swaddle will stay in place, keeping baby safe and comfortable.

Some of the other benefits of swaddling?

Improved sleep for baby and for parents Decreases the Moro startle reflex, in turn increasing REM sleep, which is vital for brain development. Reduces colic and fussiness: a happy baby is a calm baby. Prevents over-stimulation and helps your little one feel comforted by mimicking the comforts of the womb.

With these things in mind, here are some of the specifics on swaddling and what you should look for in an ideal swaddle.

Temperature-regulating fabric

Fabrics that retain too much heat will only be uncomfortable at best and dangerous for baby, at worst. A baby’s body isn’t yet set up to regulate their own temperature perfectly and their small size means that they can quickly become overheated. Look for a moisture wicking fabric—as you would find in some sportswear—that will keep baby warm and dry without overheating. 

Moisture wicking fabrics pull perspiration away from the skin and through the fabric so it can evaporate, rather than remaining on the skin. This is important because if not wicked away, during cooler winter nights, sweat that cools on the skin can cause baby’s body temperature to drop. And in the heat of summer, if sweat is simply trapped, baby can quickly overheat. A good fabric will keep baby comfortable all year around. Please remember it is also important to confer with your pediatrician to determine the ideal temperature for the room where your little one will be sleeping.   ​  

Flexible fabric

While some people worry that swaddling can interfere with proper hip development, among other joints, what you need to look for is a swaddle with fabric that has enough give to allow the hip joints to move freely without interfering with the comfort and safety benefits of the swaddle. 

Avoid swaddles that restrict hip movement, as they can result in your baby developing hip dysplasia. Your baby needs free range of motion in their hips and legs to keep their joint development on track. The swaddle needs to be tight at the torso, but not below. It can still be perfectly safe, if bands are used below baby’s feet.

Don’t forget to band

Banding the swaddle below the feet is absolutely necessary, even as your baby grows, to ensure a snug and secure fit. What you don’t want is the fabric rising during sleep, potentially covering your baby’s face and creating a suffocation risk. Banding the excess fabric below baby’s feet ensures this won’t happen.

BONUS! Banding the bottom of the swaddle makes midnight diaper changes a breeze! No need to unswaddle and disturb baby completely, with hands flailing: just take off the band and do a quick change, ninja st‌yle.

Swaddle sizing

A swaddle should fit so that your baby can have their shoulder above the top edge of the fabric when placed on the swaddle. This may seem a little counter-intuitive, as you might think that keeping the shoulder below the fabric line will keep baby more snuggly wrapped but this actually poses the risk of suffocation if the fabric ends up in your baby’s face. Keeping the swaddle below the shoulders also ensures that no constraint is put on the shoulder joints. 

Ideally, you’re looking for one with a flexible fit that will grow with your baby, though remember that once your baby is rolling over from back to stomach—typically around four to five months old—it’s time to consider using a transition swaddle (with one or both arms out) or stop swaddling altogether.

Keep it tight

Loose swaddles can actually pose a danger in that it could come undone with baby’s movement, the result being that the child gets tangled up in it. From the point of view of the Safe Sleep Guidelines, a loosened swaddle is basically a blanket and therefore a no-no in the crib. 

How tight is tight enough? You should still be able to slide your hand flat between your baby’s chest and the swaddle, but not more than that.

There is no doubt that swaddling is a perfect way to help your baby master sleeping comfortably and safely. Finding a swaddle that works for your baby is the key!

From the first moment you meet them (and probably before) you’ve done everything in your power to keep your little ones safe and sound. From doctor visits to child care, you’ve probably researched high and low to help make informed choices for your child. But do you know when your child should receive their first eye exam?

You’re not alone if you don’t! In fact, a survey from VSP Vision Care and market research agency, YouGov, found that a whopping 88 percent of parents did not know that their children should receive their first eye exam at six months old. And, twice as many parents worry about their children’s dental problems vs. their vision issues – even though most children lose their baby teeth by age 12.

We caught up with busy mom and VSP network eye doctor, Dr. Jennifer Wademan, to weigh in on the best age to get an eye exam, what to expect at the appointment, and how to find the right eye doctor for your family. Read on for our Q&A with Dr. Wademan.

At what age should my child have their first comprehensive eye exam?

Dr. Wademan: Many parents don't realize this, but the first comprehensive eye exam should be around six months of age. You may have had vision screenings with your pediatric doctor, but a comprehensive eye exam is recommended at the age of six months. 

Wow! That's surprising. Six months seems very early; why does my baby need an eye exam at such an early age?

Dr. Wademan: A lot of important visual skills are developing and should be present around six months of age. That includes the baby’s focusing ability—the ability to fixate on something, usually mom or dad’s face. Also, color vision and depth perception. Those are really important skills that we want to make sure are present at that age. 

Especially with babies it’s difficult to tell; they’re not going to be able to tell you what they're seeing or what they're not seeing, so an eye exam can help determine those visual skills.  

How often should my child have eye exams?

Dr. Wademan: The first one should be at six months and then again at three years. The next one should be five or six years old, that age right before they start kindergarten. That’s usually a really good protocol. And then after that an annual comprehensive eye exam is a must. 

Remember that babies and children are building a visual library so it's really important to make sure that what they're seeing is clear and unobstructed, and that there’s no visual impairment.  That way, if there are any issues present, we can address it earlier on as they're building a more accurate visual library which is essential for their growth and development. This is especially important for their success as they approach school age.

Is there anything I can do ahead of time to help my child feel more comfortable at their eye exam?

Dr. Wademan: It depends on the age of your child: for babies at six months, making sure you're not scheduling the appointment right at nap time or right when the baby needs to eat.

For an older child, I think it's important just to prepare the child by talking to them. Tell them what to expect and address any concerns or fears they may have before the appointment. I often tell parents to bring your child in at the same time as your exam, let them sit on your lap, so they can watch you do the exam first. Then, when it's time for the child's exam, it's a little easier: they know what to expect. 

Really an eye exam is probably the easiest health exam for a child (I'm a little biased). We try to make the experience fun and exciting with toys, cartoons and a treasure chest.

Are there any signs that I should look for to know if my baby/child has vision problems?

Dr. Wademan: It’s important to bring your baby or child in to an eye doctor because their regular pediatric exam is an eye screening, not a comprehensive exam. A comprehensive eye exam goes beyond just clear vision for kids— it can play an important role in mobility and eye coordination, the early detection of chronic diseases like diabetes, and creating a baseline for when changes in vision occur as the child develops.

Another thing parents may notice are eyes not tracking together (lazy eye) in children. It’s important to keep in mind that babies can’t really articulate if something is blurry. Even with older kids, when they're hitting that school age, kids can't really articulate blurry versus clear vision. If a child’s vision is blurry, that’s the picture they’re looking through and oftentimes they don’t know that they should be seeing things any differently.

Beyond ensuring clear vision, are there other eye health and overall health-related issues the eye doctor is looking for?

Dr. Wademan: In addition to vision issues, there are other diseases that can be present, so it’s important to create a baseline at a very young age. Diabetes, eye pressure, congenital cataracts, lazy eye, all of these can occur in kids. The younger they are and the earlier we are able to treat, the better the prognosis is long term for their overall vision and health.

Starting from birth to about eight years old is where we see a lot of developmental changes and so some of those conditions that we can treat earlier on, means that they're going to be seeing clear and comfortable for years to come. There's a critical window where you want to check everything out. I’m a mom and I noticed my daughter, who is six, wasn’t doing as well in school as I thought she would. I took her to get an eye exam and it turned out she needed glasses. Keep in mind, a child’s vision can change out of the blue and fairly quickly. It’s like their shoe size— it can stay the same for a year but then change two sizes in three months. So, you just never know unless you have that comprehensive eye exam.

Anything parents should know about dilation? Is dilation safe for kids?

Dr. Wademan: Dilation is safe for kids and is done for two reasons:

The first reason is to get a better look inside the back of the eye. Think of it like window opening, dilation makes it easier to see through thus I can see in the eye more extensively.

Secondly, it relaxes a child's whole focusing system, which allows me to get a much more accurate representation if the child has a prescription whether for nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Parents should know the eye drops can last anywhere from four-to-12 hours, and sometimes your child will get a bit tired. There aren’t really any other side effects, although for some children the eye drops may sting a little bit.  

What are the most common issues you see in children during eye exams?

Dr. Wademan: Moderate-to-higher amounts of prescriptions, whether it’s nearsightedness, farsightedness or sometimes astigmatism. The other thing I often see is lazy eye, where one eye turns out and both eyes are not focusing and working together. Any of these issues can lead to vision problems and reduced vision into adulthood if not addressed early on.

I’m not sure how to get started. What should I look for when selecting an eye doctor for my kid? Do I need to find an eye doctor who has experience with baby eye exams before making an appointment?

Dr. Wademan: If you don't currently have an eye doctor, visit VSP.com to find an eye doctor near you. I see a lot of families from baby to teenager. Just like with any other provider, it’s important to find someone you’re comfortable asking questions and that you’re at ease with. There are specific pediatric eye doctors, but many eye doctors see babies and children through adulthood.

For some reason pregnant people ask me for advice on newborns. I don’t know why because I hate newborns (I mean—I love my children more than life itself—they know this and exploit my weakness and try to kill me with sleep deprivation torture and boob infections.)

My advice is this and it sucks because it’s not advice: The weirdest thing about having a baby is not that a human lives in your house who didn’t exist last year, it’s BOOBS. Boobs rule your life.

NOW LET ME BE CLEAR: Your baby needs food to live and if that food is formula, PLEASE FEED YOUR BABY AND DON’T FEEL BAD ABOUT IT. OMG staaaaaaaap with the mom-shaming, boob tyrants (I’m looking at you, Le Leche League).

Either way, for the first week at least, your boobs rule your life.

You will feel your feelings in your boobs.

You will feel your baby’s feelings in your boobs.

You will feel the f*cking weather in your boobs.

Your boobs own you.

My boobs took ownership a few short years ago on March 22 at about 1 a.m. when a nurse put the girl baby on me and she bit me so hard my nipple folded in half (bad pronoun. The baby, not the nurse. Nurses don’t bite). It bruised that way, in a straight line, and then cracked and developed mastitis which tried to kill me a little bit. MOTHERHOOD IS A BEAUTIFUL MIRACLE LOL arrrrrgggggh.

Then everything got easier. I made enough milk, she drank enough milk. Breastfeeding became easy and convenient and I loved it. Not everyone feels this way, including Queen Victoria and she was the QUEEN! But I liked it. It went well.

The girl was easy to wean. At 17 months, she stopped asking and I stopped offering. She was a Le Leche League poster child. My body didn’t even go back to “normal” yet when my boobs (not my brain—most definitely not my brain) made me say to my husband, “I wouldn’t mind being pregnant.”

Here we are. My second child, the boy, is almost 20 months old. And it’s happening. He’s weaning.

On Monday night he nursed.

On Tuesday morning he asked for a waffle instead of Gaga.

Gaga is his name for my boobs. I don’t know why or how he came up with that name but everyone knows because, every time I picked him up from daycare in the last six months, he would jab his cute, stubby finger into my breast bone and yell, “Gaga!” until I either whipped it out or forced him, hysterical, into the car seat so we could Gaga in the privacy of our own home.

On Tuesday night my husband put him to bed and I tried to work up some emotion about the end of the era but I felt nothing but glee. I would be free! I could take ALL THE DRUGS (jk hugs not drugs)! I could drink all the alchomahalz (jk I can’t drink more than one unit or I fall asleep)! I can get a tattoo (maybe)! I can buy REAL BRAS (DEFINITELY)!

On Wednesday, at naptime, the boy remembered Gaga. “GAGA GAGA GAGA!” He screamed. But it was too late! Wasn’t it? My boobs began to question, threatening to break free from their sports-bra enclosure. I left him to scream and put the girl down for a nap. When I came back in he reached for me. I picked him up, feeling like I was going to crumble. I was going to do whatever he asked of me. And he let me hold him. He didn’t ask for anything at all. I put him down and he went right to sleep.

I sobbed. I blubbered. I was breathless, unable to utter a sentence. My husband insisted on video chatting with me from work. He praised me for being strong (he has selfish motives, of course, but also pure ones). I cried and cried and cried and ate chocolate to chase away the dementors and read some articles online that made me feel bad (LLL….I SEEEEE YOU) and some that made me feel better (Kelly Mom, way to go), and did some work, and…

It’s over. No more Gaga.

It was my boobs that were sad, not me. Lady Gaga was crying, not me. She was gonna miss being of use. She was going to miss being gloriously resplendent, unable to be contained by a simple underwire. She was going to miss spending time with that sweet little baby, who always held my hand as he fed. She didn’t want to deflate into withered old hag bags. It wasn’t me! IT WAS GAGA!

I was gripped by a crashing wave of loneliness. My husband told me I’d feel better soon. He agreed it was the hormones making me hysterical, not me. I’m FINE. I’m HAPPY.

Gaga was commander-in-chief. And it’s over. I’m in charge now.

Pregnancy hypertension or Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy. Usually, the mother’s blood pressure can be successfully managed with oral medication and the pregnancy can continue, but sometimes the baby needs to be delivered early. This can cause problems if the pregnancy is not near term. A new study has shown that natural antioxidants found in mushrooms may help treat this pregnancy issue.

Research from the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at University College Cork (UCC), the INFANT Centre at UCC and the University of Liverpool, as well as The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) at Technical University of Denmark, have shown in a rat model that a natural diet derived antioxidant L-ergothioneine can relieve some of the clinical symptoms of preeclampsia. The hope is that the same will be true for humans.

“Our research shows that treating rats with preeclampsia with the natural antioxidant L-ergothioneine reduced blood pressure, prevented fetal growth restriction and dampened production of the damaging substances released from the placenta during preeclampsia,” says Dr. Cathal McCarthy, leader of this research in a press release from the INFANT Centre at UCC.

In order to be able to make enough L-ergothioneine to eventually treat patients, the scientists are looking into ways of producing this compound efficiently in high amounts using yeast cell factories. Ergothioneine can be found in a wide variety of foods, particularly in mushrooms, where amounts are relatively high compared to other foods.

“Today, ergothioneine is either made chemically or extracted from mushrooms, but at DTU Biosustain we are developing a method to make it biologically. This should lead to its much wider availability at competitive prices,” says Douglas Kell, Associated Scientific Director at DTU Biosustain and Research Chair in Systems Biology Department of Biochemistry, University of Liverpool.

Much evidence exists for L-ergothioneine’s benefits in a variety of neurological and vascular disorders as well. Thus, L-ergothioneine appears to be a safe, natural diet derived antioxidant whose therapeutic potential looks promising but remains to be validated in human clinical trials.

Welcoming a new baby is a happy occasion—but the aftermath of giving birth can be unexpectedly challenging, especially when problems like postpartum depression occur. Postpartum depression is a serious issue in the United States. The condition affects 10% to 20% of new mothers and often new mom feel ashamed of experiencing postpartum depression.

Some feel the stigma associated with the condition or feel that they’re failing their child. For this reason, many mothers hide their symptoms and suffer far longer than they should. Or, they just don’t know that what they’re experiencing is postpartum depression.

It’s not always possible to prevent the condition, but studies show that a longer maternity leave reduces the risk for postpartum depression. It’s possible that moms returning to work too quickly can lead to feelings of guilt and other negative self-talk about leaving their baby in the care of someone else, combined with the stress of balancing a new baby and the demands of the workplace.

Becoming a mother initiates a huge shift in a woman’s life and sense of identity. Normal routines change, priorities are different, and lack of sleep can cause many new parents to experience mental health challenges. With all the emotions and challenges involved with raising a newborn, it’s no wonder some women find themselves experiencing depression, despite the joy of a new child.

And while many women experience temporary “baby blues” after giving birth, this typically subsides quickly. A smaller percentage of moms develop postpartum depression, which can last for much longer and be much more intense. Whether you’re a new mom, a concerned partner, or a friend or family member, it’s important to keep an eye out for the almost invisible signs of postpartum depression.

Coping With Postpartum Depression

To cope with postpartum depression, it’s crucial to know what to look for. Many women dismiss or hide their symptoms, and their partners and family members may not know what to look for. What’s more, many of the symptoms of postpartum depression are nearly invisible, as they mimic many of the difficulties new parents face naturally.

According to Dr. Mariea Snell, assistant director of the online doctor of nursing practice program at Maryville University, it is very normal to have a change in your mood just after having a baby.  

“The concern comes in when after about 2-3 weeks these feelings don’t change or get worse. Some red flags for postpartum depression are: feeling uninterested in activities that you normally enjoyed, being tearful, feeling guilt, expressing fear of being a bad mother, having difficulty with making decisions and change in eating and sleeping patterns.”

Classic symptoms of postpartum depression are sadness, hopelessness, feeling overwhelmed and inadequate, issues with self-esteem, and trouble connecting or bonding with the baby. New moms may have anxiety or cry frequently, withdrawing from loved ones.

Women with postpartum depression may also face severe exhaustion and difficulty sleeping. As many new parents are sleep-deprived, it can be hard to determine whether depression or middle-of-the-night baby needs are to blame.

Moms who are struggling with postpartum depression may be feeling hopeless, but there are ways to cope with the problem. Lifest‌yle changes, including getting more exercise, cutting down on caffeine, and practicing meditation are just some of the ways to reduce postpartum depression. If these modifications don’t work, antidepressants may be the best option.

Women should never feel ashamed about seeking treatment for postpartum depression. It’s time to break down the stigma. By taking care of their own needs, new moms will not only feel better, but they’ll be able to better enjoy their baby’s first years.

Risk Factors for Postpartum Depression

Several factors can increase a new mother’s risk of developing postpartum depression. Not surprisingly, a history of anxiety and depression is a risk factor. Unbalanced hormone levels also play a role in postpartum mental health. New moms and mothers with babies who have health problems or are very fussy are also more likely to develop postpartum depression, as are women who do not have a strong support system and feel isolated from other adults.

Many of these risk factors can be mitigated by a caring and attentive partner or the support of friends and family members. Women need to feel like they’re not alone and they need time to take care of themselves and have a break.

More Than Baby Blues

Postpartum depression is much more serious than the “baby blues” many women get soon after giving birth. Mood swings, crying, anxiety, and other symptoms are short-lived during the baby blues and usually last only a few days or weeks.

“If these symptoms do not get better or get worse around the 3-6 week point it could be time to consult with a provider. Telehealth can be a great way to connect with someone. You can get advice or care without having to disrupt your schedule,” says Dr. Snell.

Everyone needs to contribute to making sure a woman feels supported postpartum. Even simple gestures that allow new moms to eat healthfully or take a shower contribute positively to her mental health and well-being. Postpartum depression is a serious issue, and it’s crucial to recognize and cope with it.

As a new mom, you’ve probably been told that your baby needs to get in some tummy time each day to avoid developing a flat head and build proper head control. However, new studies show that many babies still aren’t meeting head control development guidelines by a set age. Researchers hope that a new tummy time cheat sheet will help.

Flat heads have become a very normal condition since the “Back to Sleep” campaign was developed as the recommended method of putting babies down to sleep: always on their backs, never on their bellies. Even so, developing a flat spot isn’t just about aesthetics, it can also lead to bigger problems.

A new study from the University of Melbourne confirmed that babies who develop a flat spot are more likely to have poor head control. The researchers found that of the babies being treated in their clinic, 52 percent of seven-month-olds were not meeting pull-to-sit development guidelines for head control.

To help parents learn the proper methods for practicing tummy time and developing stronger head control, the study author, physiotherapist and Ph.D. candidate Liz Williams created this handy fact sheet. Williams explained that the current advice to simply give plenty of tummy time isn’t enough.

The chart gives helpful illustrations and tips, like the fact that tummy time can take place on a parent’s chest instead of the floor. It also breaks down exercises by ages from birth to three months, so that you can change things up as your baby grows.

“Many new parents follow advice to ‘position’ their resting baby with their head on one side, then on the other side, when we need to encourage babies to be active, to move themselves by engaging with them from birth," Williams said.

There have been way too many times that we have left the house and I have forgotten one crucial item. It tends to be the most critical item that we need and there it is, left at home. Have you read the book, Checklist Manifesto? A diaper bag requires a checklist because there are too many things that baby needs and are so easy to forget.

The tricky thing is that we need to pack each time we go out, right? We use all the things like outfits, diapers, bottles but it’s the replenishing that causes me to forget an item. (That and my current state of sleep deprivation.) So, I’m making a list here as much for me as it is to share. Now if only someone could help me pack suitcases for a family of five.

 

So here it goes, this is my list for one newborn baby. The best way for me to remember all items is to think in categories: diapering, feeding, mom, all others/siblings.

  • Bottles, with breast milk or water and formula

  • Chapstick, gum, I don’t know but things you’d put in your purse

  • Toy for baby or sibling
  • Phone charger if needed
  • Blanket or muslin

The diaper bag evolves as the baby gets older and needs less or different things. Also, I used to carry a larger duffle bag style when we had two children under two and thus had two different size diapers and clothes to remember to pack. Oh, those days were exhausting. 

It is important to remember to get your items like your wallet (!) when the weekend is over, for example, and you are headed to work for the week. I’ve been without my wallet on a few occasions because it’s left in the diaper bag. Oops!

And the worst thing I ever forgot? Formula at the airport!

I was traveling to Boston to get to Cape Cod, to visit family with just Deacon, my youngest at the time. He was in between breastmilk and cows milk and so we supplemented with formula. He ate solid food but not enough to satisfy my big, growing boy. We went through security before I realized it. They do not sell formula anywhere in an airport, FYI. I learned that the hard way.

Thankfully, our flight was delayed for one hour. I had our bag checked, of course, and so we left the airport and went back to the car and into the parking garage. I drove to the closest Walmart and bought baby formula. This may have been one of the highest stress situations I have been in and I felt like I was the worst mom on the planet that day.

By then he wanted a bottle so I made one on the spot in the Walmart parking lot and drove back to the airport. We had to go through security again and made it back just in time. I definitely would have had to miss my flight otherwise! Lesson learned. Don’t be like me. Use this list.

I sometimes think about when I was younger and meticulously packed my purse or bag for a class in college. Now I can’t even remember what I even needed for myself. A hairbrush, mirror, face powder? Now I just need chapstick, phone, and a wallet and I’m good. It’s the little ones that need all of the things!

Oh yeah and after all that packing, don’t forget the little one too!

I was among the first of my friends to have kids, which meant navigating the baby gear scene somewhat blindly. I walked through the aisles of Babies ‘R’ Us and Buy Buy Baby scanning whatever seemed useful, but not having much product advice beyond what my mom found useful 25 years ago. It wasn’t until I joined a playgroup of other new twin moms and took some parenting classes at the 92nd Street Y that I could chat about and see park blankets, pacifiers and push toys in action.

Raising kids inevitably means acquiring stuff. When you live in a two-bedroom apartment, in New York City space is at a premium. If something is no longer useful, I happily toss it or pass it along to a friend. I’ve compiled a list of sanity-saving gear for the first five years. These 50 products are worth the precious square footage they take up. If only I knew about them when registering!

Essentials for Sleep

  1. Summer Infant SwaddleMes and Halo SleepSacks: Velcro makes for a great “baby burrito.” I find that swaddled babies sleep longer because their flailing arms don’t startle baby awake. Thanks, Dr. Harvey Karp and The Happiest Baby on the Block!
  2. MAM pacifiers and clips: Because there is no “upside-down,” baby can more easily pop these pacifiers back in. Glow-in-the-dark versions are brilliant. Clip a pacifier to baby’s car seat and carrier so you don’t have to fumble to find it.
  3. Brookstone sound machine: My baby lets out a contented, sleepy sigh when she hears that rumble.
  4. Blankets and Beyond security blanket animals: Introduce a lovey to your baby that you can replace if lost. Take a picture of all lovies with their labels visible to simplify your hunt for a replacement later on.
  5. Carter’s Zip-Up Sleep & Play: Because who wants to search for snaps during the 3 a.m. diaper change?

Essentials for Food

  1. Medela bottles: I pumped right into these and used them to feed my twins. The tops have just the nipple and a ring. Less parts = less dishes.
  2. Nursing pillows: Double Blessings for twins, Boppy for singletons. These double as tummy time supports and lounge chairs.
  3. Medela Easy Expression Bustier: Hands-free pump bra so you can relax, be productive, or just imagine you’re Madonna while pumping.
  4. Tovolo silicone ice cube tray: Freeze homemade baby food purees. Pop out and store frozen cubes in Ziplocs. Defrost a cube or two for a quick meal.
  5. Green Sprouts waterproof bibs: Rinse off and hang to dry for the next meal.
  6. Fisher-Price SpaceSaver high chair and portable booster seat: These buckle onto regular adult chairs. The high chair cover easily snaps off to machine wash. Portable option is useful for long trips or dinner at a friend’s house.
  7. Munchkin SureGrip straw cups: We used these to transition off milk bottles at a year and still use them at 5 years.
  8. Munchkin Snack Catcher: Minimize spills and encourage independence.
  9. The First Years Take & Toss plastic bowls, sippy cups, straw cups, and divided plastic plates: We use these daily for cereal, water, smoothies and meals. Avoid the dreaded, “Mom! My food is touching!”
  10. Contigo water bottles: My favorite yet in the battle against leaks.
  11. Beech-Nut fruit/veggie purees in disposable pouches: I use these on-the-go snacks to keep my baby awake in the stroller while rushing home for a nap. They are also good for incorporating vegetables that baby would spit out if served straight up.
  12. OXO Tot dishwasher basket and drying rack: For the abundance of bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, pump parts, straws and small accessories that are now part of your life.
  13. IKEA adjustable-height toddler table and chairs: Great for meals and activities as kids grow.

Essentials for Travel

  1. Lillebaby Nordic carrier: Great for naps on-the-go and for boarding airplanes with pre-walkers.
  2. Baby Jogger City Select double stroller: As a city family, our stroller acts as a car. The sturdy wheels can handle snow, rocks, curbs and stairs. We’ve used various combinations and directions of car seats, stroller seats and a glider board.
  3. Summer Infant 3D Lite: This lightweight umbrella stroller folds easily as we hop on the bus.
  4. Graco Snap N Go stroller frame: The infant car seat easily clicks in, which is great for those first few months before baby can sit up in a regular stroller seat.
  5. Graco Nautilus 65 LX 3-in-1 Harness Booster: This car seat transforms into two stages of booster seats for your growing child. My kids love to store their treasures in the cup holder and side cubbies.
  6. JJ Cole BundleMe stroller bunting: Keeps baby cozy with just a light jacket. I wish I could crawl into this “stroller sleeping bag” on blustery mornings!
  7. Aden + Anais muslin blanket/nursing cover: An airy cover-up for babies who are nursing or sleeping in a carrier or stroller.
  8. PackIt freezable lunch box: Built-in ice packs save me a step on busy mornings.
  9. Graco Pack N Play: Sets up in a minute. The basic version is affordable enough to keep one at each grandparent’s.
  10. Usborne wipe-clean activity books: Keep kids busy on airplanes and cars and while waiting at the doctor’s office or restaurants.

Essentials for Health and Safety

  1. DenTek Kids floss picks: These plus power toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste are my best friends in the fight against cavities.
  2. Summer Infant Ultimate Crib Sheet: This pad snaps to crib slats for easy changing, so there’s no need to hoist up the mattress. This is especially helpful when kids get sick or wet the bed at night. The three layers serve as a sheet, absorbent mattress pad, and waterproof pad.
  3. Crib that converts to a toddler bed with side rail: Encourage independence, save your back and prevent falls. This setup can easily last for four years.
  4. Safety 1st Finger Pinch Guard: Having these on my doors has saved us from many tears! Easily removable.
  5. Puddle Jumpers: Life jackets that let kids practice their swimming strokes.

Diapering and Potty Essentials

  1. Walmart Parent’s Choice diapers: Best deal out there. Size 1s are less than 10 cents each! With a wetness indicator strip, there’s no guessing whether baby needs a change.
  2. Babies ‘R’ Us disposable changing pads: These are especially helpful when public restrooms don’t have changing tables and who knows what’s on the floor. I keep one on my changing table at home in case of a blow-out.
  3. Aquaphor Healing Ointment: Skin protectant for diaper rash, drool rash, chapped lips, irritated skin and minor cuts.
  4. Playtex Diaper Genie: I spent an entire year with three kids in diapers. Tossing diapers in the outdoor trash just wasn’t going to happen and this was great at locking away odors.
  5. Babies ‘R’ Us diaper booster pads: Add absorbency to nighttime diapers.
  6. Baby Bjorn Potty Chair: With my twins, it was useful for each to have his own potty so we could have “potty parties” together. My third went right for the regular toilet seat with the help of a step stool.

Essentials for Play

  1. Fisher-Price Rainforest Bouncer: A great place to set baby down during your speed shower.
  2. Infantino Twist and Fold Activity Gym and Play Mat: This easily collapses to store under a couch.
  3. Lamaze toys: These colorful, textured toys clip onto car seats and strollers so they don’t fall overboard like our Sophie La Girafe did.
  4. Fisher-Price Jumperoo: Gives baby a new vantage point and works the leg muscles.
  5. Land’s End and KEEN water shoes: Sturdy treads prevent playground wipe-outs during sprinkler season.
  6. Micro Kickboard Mini Scooters: Three wheels help new balancers. A solution for longer walks as you transition out of the stroller.
  7. JJ Cole Outdoor Mat: This water-resistant blanket folds compactly into its own bag and is perfect for the park or beach.

Essentials for School

  1. Skip Hop Zoo backpacks: The smallest doubles as a safety harness. The regular size works well for preschool.
  2. Pottery Barn whiteboard calendar: Home base for coordinating school events, playgroups, playdates, birthday parties, babysitters, date nights, Sunday school volunteering, work commitments, doctor’s appointments, vacations, visitors and community events for our family of six.
  3. Plastic homework folders: Protect papers from that inevitable water bottle spill.
  4. Inchbug labels: Dishwasher- and washing machine-safe adhesive name labels. Perfect for labeling clothes, backpacks, folders, water bottles, lunchboxes and shoes. Reusable Orbit Labels are great too.
