What could be better than falling asleep in the trees and waking up to birds singing around you—all within the city limits? Located near Northside Drive in Buckhead, visitors here will have easy access to the interstate, Buckhead and Midtown.

Llama Luxury Cottage

Stay with the Dali Llama once at this Llama Luxury Cottage and you'll never book a traditional hotel stay again. Kids will love these gentle creatures (but take a spare shirt—llamas spit when mad), the on-site hens (and fresh, organic eggs), and the bamboo forrest. This quirky urban oasis is located only 20 minutes from the Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta Children's Museum, and Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta.

Buckhead Carriage House

If Southern charm is what you're after, then this graceful Buckhead Carriage House is for you. Families can use the fenced in backyard, complete with a garden, hammocks, hot tub, treehouse and zipline, and fire pit, and the owners live on-site with their two younger kids.

Midtown Modern and Miniature

This Tiny House packs a big punch when it comes to cleanliness, thoughtful design, and proximity to in-town's favorite hotspots near Piedmont Park and the Botanical Garden, the BeltLine, the Krog Street Market, the Atlanta Zoo, and more. The tucked-away bedroom and the enchanting loft space make this tiny house a big hit with your kiddos, and don't let the size scare you. This casa is located close to everything worth seeing and doing, so your couch time will be limited. But while you're there? Magic.

If you are looking for a screen-free way to keep the kids entertained, Toyish Labs has created a new flexible play system to keep kids creating. Clixo combines the magic of origami, the ease of building blocks, and the power of magnets.

“Toys need just enough structure to help spark creativity, but not so much as to control it,” said Assaf Eshet, Founder and CEO at Toyish Labs. “Clixo isn’t built to collect dust on a shelf. It’s designed to be put together and then immediately be taken apart and rebuilt to form something new. That’s what the real process of creativity is like, and where research suggests we do our best learning.”

Clixo joins Eshet’s other award-winning designs to take free-form expression to the next level. Through intensive R&D, Assaf developed this first-to-market concept that allows children to transform lightweight, flexible pieces from 2D into 3D, clicking inventive ideas into infinite possibilities that can be worn, stuck on the fridge, or even tossed like a ball. The patented and proprietary design of colorful, twisting and interlocking shapes comprised of reinforced paper and durable magnets encourage improvisation, experimentation, and out of the box thinking.

Clixo

“Clixo is pushing boundaries as a toolbox for self-expression,” added Eshet. “What drives me and my team is a return to simplicity and creativity in play, while helping kids develop STEAM skills. We knew we found the perfect Clixo chape when this philosophy came alive in our hands. We’re excited to let kids own their play while unlocking new pathways to experimentation and imagination.”

Clixo Pack Descriptions:

Itsy Pack ($29.99): With 18 pieces and a quick start guide, the Itsy Pack is the perfect size to stack and pack for independent play or for building (or wearing!) on the go.

Itsy

Crew Pack ($44.99): With 28 pieces in 7 different shapes, 2 spinners, and a quick start guide for hours of fun and exploration, the Crew Pack is the value-sized collection, available in 3 different colorways.

Crew

Rainbow Pack ($74.99): With 39 pieces in 7 different shapes in a rainbow of colors, 3 spinners, and a quick start guide, the Rainbow Pack is the largest and most colorful collection and is perfect for larger scale creations or for collaborative fun with other kids.

All Clixo Packs come in eco-friendly recycled bamboo packaging that is biodegradable and compostable. The individual pieces are made from reinforced synthetic paper with strong-embedded magnets for maximum safety. Clixo is now available for purchase at www.myclixo.com.

There are so many new and beloved animals to visit at the San Diego Zoo––including the adorable black-footed cat kittens: female Skyler (top) and male Ryder (bottom) that are growing fast. Don't let their sweet looks fool you. Even though they are one of the smallest cat's one earth they are referred to as
“the world’s deadliest cat.” While these kittens and their mother will remain off public view for now, two adult black-footed cats—male Sawyer and female Yuna—can be seen in their habitat at the Safari Park’s Nairobi Village. With their keen sense of hearing and smell, these cats' predation success rate of 60 percent is the highest of any feline. In a single night, one black-footed cat can consume up to 14 rodents and birds!

Platypuses also now call the Safari Park home, so be sure to visit them at their habitat in Walkabout Australia. Countless additional extraordinary animals await your visit too! Tigers, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, cheetahs, gorillas and more!

Aquarium of the Pacific - Long Beach

Shannan Rouss

Take a deep dive into the outdoor exhibits at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, which is open through July 24. Although the indoor exhibits remain closed, there's still plenty to see outside. Kids can touch a moon jellyfish—the delicate translucent sea creatures drift in a pool near the entrance—along with a variety or rays and maybe even a shark. Another must-see? The Lorikeet Forest, where you can purchase a cup of nectar for $4 and make your way through the aviary as the colorful birds land on your for a sip. In addition to these interactive exhibits, kids can also see penguins, seals and sea lions diving through the water and splashing around.

Tickets with a timed entry are $12 (children 2 and under are free), and must be purchased in advance. We recommend booking an early time as the touch pools can get crowded even with social distancing markers displayed on the grounds.

Trade cabin fever for camping and get back to nature at to one of the five campgrounds open on Catalina Island. Plan your escape via the Catalina Express, operating out of Long Beach, San Pedro and Dana Point, and arriving at either Avalon or Two Harbors. July, officially labeled “Plastic-Free July Month” is a great time to assess what you have around your house and decide just how many plastic items you have laying around. And while plastic is inevitable in our world, single-use plastics do not have to be.

During “Plastic-Free July Month,” let’s gather our kids and ask them what it means to have a cleaner world. Why? Because as adults, we eventually have to leave the world to our children, their children, and so forth. So why not get them talking about how to keep our planet clean?

Let’s start with the basics: Why is single-use plastic is so dreadful for our precious planet? To put it simply, single-use plastics are plastic products that can only be used once and then thrown away to end up in our pollution mainstream. Single-use plastics, when not disposed of properly, can lead to the eventual buildup of waste floating into our streets, into our beautiful oceans, and end up causing drastic pollution that will affect everyone’s health and well being.

Below are 7 easy steps you and your children can take to reduce single-use plastics and maybe eventually remove the need for them in the future.

1. Buy consciously. Think about how many times you’re going to use that product. If it’s a plastic sandwich bag, skip it and buy reusable bags such as ones made from silicone, cloth, or a stronger plastic that will last for many years. You can also use paper sandwich bags that will break down when wet and can be disposed into your recycling bin or compost bin.

2. Use natural materials. Natural materials and materials that are sustainable include bamboo, organic cotton, wood, and glass. Natural materials are a lot safer for children as they are usually manufactured without toxic by-products.

3. Bring your own lunch containers. There are tons of cool looking lunch containers for your kids. The best materials are stainless steel and glass.

4. Choose Reusable straws. Reusable straws are great for reducing plastic waste. Reusable straws can be stainless steel, glass, or made from bamboo.

5. Use Reusable water bottles. You can find reusable bottles almost anywhere. Pick some up made from stainless steel, glass, or BPA-free plastic.

6. Bring your own utensils. When packing lunch for your child, be sure to pack reusable utensils. They can easily put the used utensils back into their lunch bags/containers to bring home.

7. Look at brands and websites that offer sustainable products. Then, find easy and doable solutions for you and your family. You can find more ideas here.

I am a mom first and foremost. I might not be a supermom, but I am constantly learning and growing.Topics I stand with are parenting, the environment, and living a healthy and happy lifest‌yle. I work at an elementary school and I have 30 years experience in the health industry.

It’s 2020 and that means plastic straws are a big no-no. The good for the environment ban has encouraged parents to become more creative and that means eco-friendly straws are a must. Whether your kiddo prefers using this beverage accessory at home or in a restaurant, keep reading to see some great plastic straw alternatives that are easy on the pocketbook and the environment.
