Sure, it’s cold outside, but that doesn’t mean you and the kids can’t hit the road (or the rails) for an adventure or two. Next time the family is feeling a little stir crazy, consider one of our favorite NYC winter day trips with kids, featuring fairy houses, wolves, maple sugaring and more! (For more outdoor fun, try these kid-friendly winter hikes!)

Bear Mountain — Rockland County, NY

Paul H. via Yelp

This New York State park is known for its rugged mountains and offers great hiking options during the warmer months. However, it is open year-round and there are activities during the winter months that shouldn’t be missed. Here is your chance to try ice-skating outdoors against a landscape of mountains. The rink is open on Friday and weekends, and $5 admission and rentals are available for toddlers size 8 up to adults size 13.  Don’t end the day here though. Take a brisk walk around the beautiful lake—it's fairly flat terrain, so it is a good option for all ages. Finish the trail and spend some time at the kids' outdoor playground and hop on the Bear Mountain carousel right next door. Finally, explore the self-guided nature trail at the Trailside Museum and Zoo which is open, but under construction so check the website before visiting. Accommodations are available on-site for those wanting to extend their stay.

Look for the North American river otters who are active even in the winter months at the aptly named "Otter Pond". Adventurous kids will love to explore the nature-themed playground. Now is the perfect time to visit the Maple Sugar House at Heckscher's Farm because maple sugaring season starts in late winter. (It also happens to be the public sugaring house nearest NYC.) You will find over 300 Maple trees on-site, which are literally tapped for sugaring season. Please check their safety guidelines before visiting.

Wai Sze Zara

This charming Fairy Trail features fairy homes, all created using natural materials that can be found along this easy, half-mile trail. Thanks to Therese Objibway, founder and local artist, this magical place brings joy and wonder to many who walk through. It is wise to bring boots in case of snow and mud, particularly this time of the year. Be mindful that the parking lot is very small, so it is best to visit earlier in the day. Lakota Wolf Preserve — Columbia, NJ (near the Delaware Water Gap)

Mary M. via Yelp

This very unique experience provides your family with the opportunity to watch and observe four different packs of wolves in a natural habitat. An educational tour is provided by the wolves' owners and caretakers. A tour must be scheduled in advanced; each tour lasts about 75 minutes.  When you visit, you can choose to take a half-mile scenic walk to the habitat, or hop on a shuttle to the observation area. You will learn how wolves live, play and interact with each other, and if you listen closely you might get to hear them howl. You will also learn about bobcat, foxes and lynx here as well. There are two tours per day, and the entire experience is outdoors so dress accordingly. Lakota Wolf Preserve is near the Delaware Water Gap and the Poconos, so it can be part of an extended weekend as well.

Fresh Air Fun: Winter Hikes & Walks for Families Near NYC

Dreaming of a European adventure with the kids? There is no better place to start than Amsterdam. With its easy-to-manage size and bike-friendly streets, this international city is buzzing with unique kid-friendly activities everyone will love, all with a side of pancakes. Scroll below to see all of the must-do activities when you visit Amsterdam with the kids.

amsterdam with kid canal

Understanding Amsterdam’s Layout

Amsterdam is laid out in a half circle—the Ij River (the Dutch word for water) is on one side, while 165 canals and 1281 bridges cut through the 13th-century city on the other.

Take the 15-20 minute train from Schiphol Airport bound for Amsterdam Centraal Station—the city’s train hub where you can find all the trams and the metro station that will take you all over the city. (That is if you aren’t on a bike, but more on that later.) Trains leave regularly through the hour (even more so on the weekends) from the airport, so if a train seems too crowded, just take the next one.

Good to Know: Train and tram tickets need to be scanned upon entering and leaving (otherwise, the next time you go to enter a train or tram, you may not be granted entry). If this happens, just find an attendant and ask for help—everyone is super friendly and most people speak English fluently.

I amsterdam City Card

If you haven’t already pre-ordered your I amsterdam card, before you leave Amsterdam Centraal Station, go to the I amsterdam store located in IJ-hal (on the north side of Centraal Station), or to the I amsterdam visitor center in Stationsplein (across from Amsterdam Centraal Station) and purchase an I amsterdam card.

Think of this as your passport to the city as this card grants you access to all public transportation, entrance to over 60 museums and attractions, a free canal cruise, plus discounts on bike rentals, some restaurants, and experiences not fully covered by the card. Purchase the card in increments of 24 hours, 48, 72 or 96 hours. Prices below will only be listed if they weren’t covered by the I amsterdam city card.

Good to Know: Additional public transportation tickets for the kids aren’t covered by the I amsterdam card but go to the ticket counter at the Tram Office outside Centraal Station and ask for an all-day ticket for kids (ages 4-11). The cost? 3.75 Euros. Otherwise, all day kid tickets, purchased on the tram, cost 7.50 Euros.

Cost: 59-98 Euros

Where to Stay in Amsterdam with Kids

We’re not going to lie—Amsterdam is expensive when it comes to hotels and lodging. But when you’ve traveled this far with kids, don’t take a chance on the comforts of your hotel. Having a good home base is worth the money.

Pulitzer Amsterdam
Peter Pulitzer, the grandson of Pulitzer Prize founder Joseph Pulitzer, founded this five-star hotel. It recently went through a massive renovation and oozes comfort, charm, and quintessential Dutch design. It’s made up of 25 interlinked Dutch canal homes that were built in the 17th and 18th century and every nook and cranny of this retreat has a delightful discovery. Keep an eye out for the bucket full of LEGO bricks (really!) or the set of hanging egg swings in the courtyard. Exploring this hotel is as much fun for the adults as it is for the kids.

Of course, it’s impossible to not fall in love with the jaw-dropping, one-of-a-kind suites decorated in themes like books, music or art that include private entrances and canal views. But what you’ll really love at this hotel? The family suites.

Perfectly appointed to accommodate a family of four, the kid’s rooms are upstairs so when it’s time for them to go to bed, you can continue to hang out in the living room and enjoy those canal views. There’s even a dining table so if you decide to eat in, you don’t have huddle around the coffee table or balance take-away plates on your lap. If you don’t score a family suite, the hotel also offers 30 room and suites with interconnecting doors.

Ready to chill and a cocktail to boot? Head to the games corner right outside the Pulitzer Bar (a decadently styled bar in dark wood and moody velvets) that has board games and that bucket of LEGO bricks we mentioned earlier.

Jansz: Located in the hotel, this old-world, charming restaurant offers a buffet bar (where everything is as good as it looks) or has menu options where you can get all the pancakes, waffles and omelets you desire. This is definitely the spot to fill up before exploring the city for the day.

Online: janszamsterdam.com

Good to Know: On the last Sun. of the month from 4:30-6:30 p.m., they have “Family Sundays” where you and the family can grab an earlier dinner that caters to those little ones—picture an extensive children’s menu, fast service and supervised play for the kids when they get antsy so the parents can relax.

Rates: Standard rooms start at $300 USD.

The Doubletree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station
Located within walking distance of Centraal Station, this modern hotel overlooks the water. Ask for a higher-floored room so you can get a view of the city. But don’t worry if none are available, because this hotel has a rooftop deck and lounge that is totally worth a visit (whether you stay here or not).

Head’s up railway fans: One side of the SkyLounge overlooks the train station so if you have trainspotters, you can watch trains, trams and even boats and buses make their busy-way through this part of town.

Rates: Standard rooms start at $200 USD per night.

What to Do & See in Amsterdam with Kids

Nemo Science Museum: As impressive architecturally as the contents it holds, this is a mecca for science, technology, experiments, and interactive play. The Renzo Piano-designed building sits on the waterfront and as you approach, you may notice people walking on the sloping roof, also known as Amsterdam’s highest square.

This elevated square has an art installation called Energetica, as well as a cafe and a bar, available to museum patrons and the public alike. On a nice day, it’s a great spots for a bird’s eye view of the city.

Each level of the museum has a designated theme like Elements, Technology, the Human Body, etc. You’ll be amazed at how engaged your kids will be tinkering, engineering and playing. We couldn’t be more impressed by all the options that easily spanned various age groups. (Although we did spend the majority of our time engineering dams to prevent flooding.)

Insider Tip: If you decide to try out the manual elevator, opt to spin yourself down, rather than up, and prepare yourself for a workout.

Hours: 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; closed Mon. and Kingsday (usually a day in late Apr.)

Rijksmuseum: Originally established in 1800, this is Amsterdam’s most popular destination so be prepared for crowds and lines to see the more famous exhibits, i.e. “The Night Watch” by Rembrandt van Rijn, (commissioned and painted in 1642). This gorgeous building houses over one million pieces of art, including the breathtaking Rembrandt: this famous artist was a master at light and dark, subtext and storytelling but you’ll have a blast letting the kids tell you what they think is happening in this impressive painting. It is also home to some awesome giant “historical” Playmobil figures, which make the perfect vacation photo op.

Hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily

Van Gogh Museum: This museum houses the world’s largest collection of paintings by the troubled artist, Vincent Van Gogh. It’s big, with three main floors plus an exhibition hall and is perpetually crowded. So much so, in addition to having the I amsterdam City Card, you’ll need to reserve a (free) time-slot for entry. Repeat: You cannot walk into the museum without a confirmed reservation. Understandably, the museum is taking great pains to make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

Insider Tip: You can reserve tickets up to four months in advance and plan to visit between 9 a.m.-11 a.m. or after 3 p.m. as these are the least busy times (note that the last admission is 30 minutes before closing).

Good to Know: The cafe has amazing views of Museumplein (the open green space that links this museum, MOCO Museum, Rijksmuseum and the contemporary art museum Stedelijk) and is a great spot for some hot chocolate and a croissant for the kids, a coffee and muffin for the adults.

Hours: Mon.-Wed. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thurs. 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; Fri.-Sun. 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Amsterdam Museum: Want to know how and why Amsterdam came to be? Head to the Amsterdam Museum where a guided audio tour will have everyone mesmerized by the development of a simple fishing village to Golden-Age powerhouse to the melting pot it is today.

The tour is fascinating, engaging and since it’s self-guided—you can go as fast or slow as you like. Do plan on spending a couple hours here, though. It’s that interesting for both kids and adults. It’s also a great spot when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

More Must-Do Activities in Amsterdam

No visit to Amsterdam is complete without a canal cruise, included with your I amsterdam pass. Hop on and hop off at numerous stops around the city (click here for the map). Also worth a trip but best for kids 10 and up is the Anne Frank House. Keep in mind reservations need to be made online and well in advance of your arrival. You can’t go to a country that dominated maritime history and NOT visit the National Maritime Museum and tour a (replica) of an 18th-century ship. Swing by the oldest zoo in continental Europe and visit with 900 specials of animals at Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo. Still have time? Next door is Micropia—the first museum dedicated to all thing microbes, both good and bad.

Ferry to the Noord: Get away from the tourists and see cutting-edge architecture and cultural hotspots in the Noord neighborhood (Northern in Dutch). Free ferry boats, will drop you off by the Eye, the A’dam Toren (the tallest tower in Amsterdam that also has a giant swing on the roof) and a bike path that will take you into the countryside along the Ijsselmeer coast. The NDSM ferry will take you over to another section across there river where you’ll find loads of restaurants like family-favorite vegetarian Pllek, art galleries and more.

Where to Play in Amsterdam

The area between the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh (Museumplein) is where you’ll find ice skating in the winter, appropriately called ICE. The playground off to the right is a fun place to let the kids burn off some energy (even in the freezing cold) if you don’t strap on some skates. But of course, you can’t miss Vondelpark. Designed and built in 1850, this is Amsterdam’s most famous public green space. Expect to see lots of bikers, walkers and dogs enjoying the park (and in the summer, lots of picnics and lounging in the much-appreciated sunlight). If hunger strikes, make your way over to Groot Melkhuis, a cafe with a terrace adjacent to a kid’s playground. On the weekends, it’s rumored to have a bounce house and cotton candy. If you’re up for an even more unique dining experience, walk a little further to just outside the park to Kinderkookkafé—a cafe where the kids do all the cooking, serving and cleaning. Seriously.

Where to Eat in Amsterdam

Pancake House: Do not leave Amsterdam without a stop at Pancake House. This warm and cozy restaurant has been serving the veritable staple for breakfast, lunch, and dinner since 1973 and it will not disappoint. Whether sweet or savory, there are so many choices, you may even want to plan on going once when you get first here and then at least once again before you leave.

The kid’s menu is hilarious—they can choose between the fire department, princess, a surprise pancake, pirate and more and it is delivered with a prop to boot, like the police version above that includes a police helmet (not to keep), a side of chocolate to spread on the pancake along with some gummy candies and a lollipop. For adults, we highly recommend the Greek pancake, filled with gyro meat and feta and the Norwegian pancake, filled with salmon and cream cheese.

Hours: 9 a.m.-9:30 p.m.

Prinsengracht 191
1015 DS Amsterdam

Online: pancake.nl

Off the beaten path, in the Oud-West neighborhood, is Foodhallen, a food hall located in a renovated tram depot, filled with vendors selling pizza to pita and everything in between. A great place to go when no one can decide what they want to eat for lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is buzzy, jovial and communal. You’ll feel like a local and get a great meal, all at the same time

With over 700 years of history, Amsterdam is full of fun facts, quirky finds and the unusual—most of which are fun to discover on your own but we think these are good to know before you go. Nine Streets (Negen Straatjes) is Amsterdam’s most popular area—full of boutique and designer shopping, restaurants and cafes, and fun finds like the Amsterdam Duck Store—a store dedicated to all things rubber ducky. This is the most touristy spot in Amsterdam and while it’s fun to walk around as an adult, not so much with kids in the cold. Our recommend? Wake up early, let your partner watch the kids so you can walk these streets at your own pace, during less crowded times.

If you love cats and houseboats, head to De Poezenboot, a houseboat that is also a cat sanctuary for felines looking for a permanent home. Started in 1968 by Henriette van Weelde, the boat is open to tourists and free to enter but donations are appreciated.

Getting around Amsterdam

If everyone in your group can ride a bike, and the weather is nice, then renting a bike is the best way to see this city. With ample bike paths that weft and weave their way through town, you’ll be able to explore, get lost, get found again all while feeling like a local. If you have little ones, you can rent bakfiats (basically a cargo bike) and plop the kids in front while you pedal away. And if no bikes are in the cards for your trip, navigating the tram system is easy. Most trams return to Centraal Station and stop close to, or in front of every popular destination.

Easy Day Trips from Amsterdam

Amsterdam has so much more to offer outside the city center and it’s really worth exploring if you are here for more than three days. Castle Muiderslot is a real-life castle filled with seven centuries of Dutch history. Expect treasure hunts, and meet and greets with a Falconer for starters. You can technically bike here too if you and the family’s legs are up for it! Keukenhof Gardens, one the world’s largest flower gardens, is open from Mar.-May and features over 7 million spring-flowering bulbs.

Photos by Andie Huber unless noted otherwise. Hotel accommodations, the I amsterdam City Card, and dinner at Pancake House were provided but all opinions and recommendations are my own.

With all the road tripping families have been doing over the past year and a half, it’s no wonder our kids can crush the miles. Autumn is the best time to sneak in a quick family getaway weekend, when the hot spots are less crowded, the mountain passes are still open and the days are still warm. Check out these kid-approved fall getaways that are an easy drive from Seattle and will help the whole family unwind, decompress and recharge before winter arrives.

Tacoma

Natalie Compagno

Just a short freeway jaunt away, Tacoma is another state of mind. It’s a sister to Seattle where everything is just a little easier and a little more relaxed. But this small(er) town still has big plans, starting with the new arrivals at Point Ruston and Point Defiance.

Tacoma welcomes the new Silver Cloud Hotel at Point Ruston Waterfront! The new property is elegant and welcoming, in the heart of the family-fun zone, and vacation starts as soon as you arrive. Don bathing suits and hit the fifth-floor pool and hot tub or just enjoy the well-appointed rooms and views. Stroll into Point Ruston via the waterfront walking path to catch the latest film at Century Theatres, grab a scoop of ice cream at Ice Cream Social, or bite into a locally sourced burger at Stack 571 Burger & Whiskey Bar. You’re never too young for art–take your artists-to-be on the ART at Point Ruston sculpture walk with curated, changing art. Rent kid’s wheels at Wheel Fun Rentals or a variety of “roadsters” for all ages and cruise around the Waterwalk, then climb and play on the Ferry Big Toy and swing set at Promenade Park.

There’s more! Point Defiance Aquarium has a new star–Gertie the octopus. Don’t miss a chance to make a new friend there and see old buddies at the zoo. And on the way out of town, don’t miss the Children’s Museum of Tacoma. It entertains and educates and is always pay-as-you-will admission.

Mukilteo

Seattle North Country

When planning family road trips, Mukilteo may not come to mind—but it should. The area has so much to offer and is easy to navigate, allowing for fun excursions while cutting road time and maximizing relaxation. Get sandwiches to go from Red Cup Café and fly kites on the beach. Set up home base at the Mukilteo Silver Cloud, the big tables next to the lobby are perfect for playing games while overlooking the Sound. Hungry campers will be pleased to recognize Ivar’s next door, with views to match the chowder. For another local’s hot spot hit up Diamond Knot in the center of town. The ice cream is wait-worthy, and the “cook your own steak” on a hot granite rock is fun for budding chefs.

Trek into Snohomish County, aka Seattle’s North Country. The Outback Kangaroo Farm will send the kiddos into paroxysms of delight. The family-run rescue ranch is passionate about animal welfare, and their humorous approach makes the kangaroos accessible for even the littlest tinies. After working up a sweat with the joeys and alpacas, cruise into quaint downtown Arlington to Glory Bucha. You’ll appreciate the charming owner and healthy brews, the kids will love the sweet fizzy concoctions and can do a taste flight just like the grown-ups. For adult beverages with food for kiddos and room to roam  make Elemental Cider a destination. It's a casual, festive place with wood fire pizza, plus gluten-free options. Yum!

Whidbey Island

Visit Whidbey

Did you know Coupeville was the setting for the movie Practical Magic because of its New England-esque atmosphere? Visitors feel transported back in time to a gentler place when they settle into Whidbey Island for a fall vacation. Make the newly renovated Captain Whidbey your group’s HQ–a combination of rustic chic and summer camp fun. The cabins have fireplaces and views of Penn Cove, while the Lagoon Rooms come replete with day beds for wee ones. The dining room and bar serve scrumptious concoctions and the property has plenty of nooks and crannies for reading or playing games.

Whidbey has something for everyone. Adventurers can fly through the air at Canopy Tours Northwest or scale a tree for a birds eye view of the Deception Pass Bridge with AdventureTerra. Calling all wranglers! Private or group horse rides are available at Pacific Northwest Riding Academy. Hikers love Possession Sound Preserve, Beach View Farm Easement that takes walkers by a working farm and wetlands, while art enthusiasts will enjoy the Price Sculpture Forest. Foodies grab supplies at 3 Sisters Market for picnics at Dugualla State Park, or for a true culinary experience spend a divine meal and more at Ciao Food & Wine. The pizza is other-worldly (order an extra pie for later, trust us), and their gourmet goods to-go are all imported from Italy. Delizioso! Don’t forget dessert, both Coupeville and Langley have sweet treats: Little Red Hen Bakery serves cookies and Sweet Mona’s satisfies the chocoholics in the group.

Leavenworth

Greg Freitas

Ready for bursts of color and non-stop photo ops? Highway 2 to Leavenworth is a leaf-peeping paradise. The fall foliage on this drive must be seen to be believed—golden, burnt orange and fuchsia explosions of color blanketing the landscape hundreds of feet above the highway. The road is speckled with small Washington towns worth savoring, from eclectic Sultan to snow-crazy Gold Bar to so tiny-but-so-cute Skykomish. Even after the leaves fall, this drive is part of the experience.

Just two hours northeast of Seattle, Leavenworth is all about family fun. Everyone will enjoy nearby hikeseating bratwurst and visiting the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm. Stay at Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort (think: cozy accommodations, farm-to-table cuisine, onsite Aspen Leaf Day Spa and an amazing rock pool) or Enzian Inn, with its terrific indoor pool. The town itself is on a mission to make the entire faux-Bavarian village more family-friendly. Grab a stein or two while the kiddos ride horses, take carriage rides, putt-putt golf, hit the bike or skate park and more. Don't forget the lederhosen!

Long Beach Peninsula

Visit Long Beach Peninsula

Filled with mystery, magic and majestic seascapes, the Long Beach Peninsula makes for a wonderful fall road trip to explore the southwest tip of Washington. Hands-on activities abound so roll up your sleeves and get the kiddos involved. Dig for razor clams by day or lantern light (a license is required). Cranberry harvest runs through late October and the U-Pick Cranberries at Cranguyma Farms is the perfect way to be a part of the season. Take a bike ride or meander on the Discovery Trail and enjoy the fresh air as well as the sculptures and markers along the way.

Long Beach has manageable museums for the little ones. The World Kite Museum and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center are faves. Head to Cape Disappointment State Park—contrary to its name it won’t disappoint! The views and lighthouses are legendary. After watching waves crash and birds soar, you will need somewhere to rest. Stay at Adrift Hotel for a right-on-the-beach experience. The property has a sauna, a covered pool and a distillery onsite, plus it's dog friendly too. The Boardwalk Cottages are a cozy option just down the road. At The Helm is perfect for the sophisticated crew, and history lovers should try the Shelbourne Hotel—the oldest continuously operating hotel in the state.

La Conner

Love La Conner

Not just for the Tulip Festival anymore, La Conner is a “tiny town with big charm.” Bursting with popular exploration adventures, the Skagit Valley is a fabulous place to enjoy the autumn season. It gets crowded so be prepared; fall and winter bring feathered visitors such as the beautiful Trumpeter Swan and Snow Geese. Swinomish Channel teems with seals, bald eagles, great blue herons and otters. Kids will love the family farms that surround the region, and the pumpkin patches are always a hit for picking out that perfect gourd for carving or painting. Stop by Christianson's Nursery to see llamas, goats, birds, rabbits and more and don’t forget to scoop up some plants and gifts to take home.

The town has lots to enjoy. Stroll and savor handmade chocolates, scones, fudge and coffee from the specialty stores on First Street, or wine taste with your pooch at the many dog-friendly establishments. The Museum of Northwest Art is a tiny but mighty museum, and the self-guided Walking Tour of La Conner’s Sculpture Exhibit is another artistic highlight. If the fam gets restless head to the La Conner Swinomish Skateboard Park. Stay at La Conner Country Inn, conveniently located in downtown La Conner with complimentary breakfast and cozy gas fireplaces in the guest rooms.

Copalis Beach

Iron Springs Resort

If your family needs serious bonding time, take your road trip straight to Copalis Beach and check into Iron Springs Resort. Copalis Beach is all the fun your family will need—tide pools, tag games and long beach strolls. Iron Springs cabins are like a second home your family shares, time-tested and comforting, a place you don’t want to leave. The kitchens come loaded with all the accoutrements you need to make vacay meals a breeze. Don’t forget to pick up the signature cinnamon buns at the Iron Springs General Store and anything else your group needs for hunkering down at the resort. The resort welcomes dogs with tennis balls and treats—so bring your four-legged friends.

It’s razor clam digging season! Contact the friendly staff to help obtain the required license and essentials. They will also help with bivalve-digging tips and clam cleaning tutorials. We think your kids will also love kite flying (it's a year-round sport in Ocean Shores), hiking trails that beckon nearby or just holing up with puzzles, books and games for cabin amusement. You won’t want to leave, but if you feel like a night out, reserve a table at just up the road at Ocean Crest for exquisite cuisine that matches the view. Holiday pictures, check!

Olympic Peninsula

Olympic National Parks

Did you know that the Olympic National Park is one of the top five most visited national parks in the country? That’s why visiting in fall is the best way to escape the crowds but still enjoy the splendor of the region. The rugged beach and rainforest are unique Washington attributes-experience the magnificence of the Hoh RainforestHurricane Ridge and the "sea stacks" at Rialto Beach. The kids can splish-splash at Sol Duc Hot Springs (open through Oct. 31, 2021) and hunt for hidden treasures on the Olympic Peninsula GeoTour. There are 30 geocaches hidden around the Highway 101 Scenic Byway Loop.

Bike rides along the Olympic Discovery Trail make for relaxing family leg-stretchers, and short day hikes abound. In Port Angeles, explore the new Dream Playground where the tinies can get the squirms out! Foodie families will savor the Olympic Culinary Loop, discovering locally grown, fresh caught and foraged food that inspires local chefs to create delicious Olympic Coast Cuisine. Handcrafted wines, microbrews, spirits and artisanal ciders reward patient parents for their hard work. Stay at Lake Quinault Lodge, Lake Crescent Lodge or Kalaloch Lodge. These impressive rustic gems are signature experiences on their own.

Hood Canal

Alderbrook Resort

Whether you approach via ferry or I-5, Hood Canal is one of Washington’s most spectacular waterscapes. Tucked away near the tiny town of Union, kid-friendly Alderbrook is Hood Canal’s swankiest resort. Kids will love roasting s'mores by the campfire, beach combing and playing lawn games near the cottages. The entire fam will love the 85-degree salt water pool with hot tub. In addition to rooms, the resort offers spacious cottages perfect for families who are looking to spread out and take advantage of full kitchens. Fungi foraging season is near full swing, and guests can meander the trails and bring home a bounty of delectable mushrooms from the edible landscape. Guided walks take place every Friday with Alderbrook’s resident naturalist. Groups of 10 or larger can also book a private dinner with nature walk at the Gathering Grove.

Or embrace your inner forest ranger and check into Robin Hood Village Resort. If the fairytale setting looks like it was designed by Hollywood, it’s because it was. The rustic resort blends perfectly with the neighboring woods—request the cabins with private Coleman hot tubs. Outdoorsy types will find themselves blissfully at home. City dwellers can drive two miles along the water to Union City Market, a hipster mercantile/café/event space/marina that would fit seamlessly in Ballard.

Lake Chelan

Lake Chelan

Need some sunshine this fall? Lake Chelan boasts 300 days of sun, an array of outdoor activities and over 30 wineries hugging the shores of the iconic, sapphire waters of Washington’s largest lake. For real seclusion, hop on the Lady Express to Stehekin (pop. 75) at the northern end of Lake Chelan. Stehekin is inaccessible by car, has no cell phone reception, no ATM, and no connecting roads. Hello, together time!

Closer to town stay somewhere new, like Harmony Meadows Tennis Resort, a world-class destination tennis resort or The Lookout, a vacation village perched above the lake. Families can also lay heads at old fave Wapato Point, a 116-acre waterfront property. Then get ready for an “Oh My Gosh” list of adrenaline-filled (and some calmer) outdoor diversions. Take flight on a scenic ride with Lake Chelan Helicopters or make the leap with Sky Dive Chelan for a stunning view of the terrain. Get into the vines (and the nectar therein) with the guided Chelan Electric Bikes tour through the local wine country.

After so much exercise there will be tummys to feed. Eat at Blueberry Hills—a small, family owned and operated U-pick berry farm and restaurant with the best breakfast blintzes on the planet. For evening entertainment, don’t miss Chelan’s Ruby Theatre, a Main Street American classic. The state’s oldest continuously operating theatre, the Ruby has been screening first-run films since 1914.

Hood River

Visit Hood River

On the banks of the mighty Columbia River, Mount Hood beams down on visitors to Hood River, Oregon. The scenery makes it a choice autumn destination and kids love Multnomah Falls, the Bridge of the Gods and Lost Lake. Visit Dry Creek Falls by the Pacific Crest Trail, a rushing waterfall that, despite its name, is never dry. There are farms and picnic spots galore. Meander along Hood River Fruit Loop, a 35-mile pastoral drive through the valley’s orchards, forests and farmlands. The region provides great photo ops, as well as fruits and wine, lavender and alpacas and family activities.

Two notable farms are Packer Orchards Farm Place for local fruits and vegetables with plenty of parking and picnicking, and Draper Girls Country Farm with a year-round, self-serve fruit stand, u-pick cherries, apples and pears in season, and farm-raised lamb, pork and beef for purchase. Ready for sport? Sign the fam up for the Locks Approach Disc Golf Course–it’s free and open to all ages and abilities. Or check out Oregon E-bikes for e-bike rentals so your group can keep cruisin’ with ease. Stay at Skamania Lodge, the “wow” factor is hard to beat. Luxury treehouses plus resort, zip lining, an indoor pool and outdoor hot tub make everyone in the family say, “best trip ever!” Or for something a little out of the box, travel about 40 minutes north to Mt. Adams Getaway.

Tick Tock: Late Summer Escapes to Take with the Kids

The Glamporous Life: We Found No-Hassle Camping

Summer is right around the corner. Before you know it, the kids will be out of school and it will be time to hit the beach! While the water may beckon, those crowded shores leave something to be desired. That’s why we are over-the-moon about Virginia Beach’s newest hotel property, Delta Hotels Virginia Beach Bayfront Suites. Just a quick 3-hour drive from DC, Delta Hotels Virginia Beach is the only private beach hotel on the bay! We’re swooning over this property with water views and sweeping vistas of First Landing State Park. Read on for 7 reasons to book a stay with Delta Hotels Virginia Beach Bayfront Suites NOW!

1. Every Room is Family Friendly
This all-suite hotel offers spacious, family-friendly rooms designed for comfortable travel. Each room features a living area that doubles as extra sleeping space at night so even the smallest room on property can hold a max of 6 guests (starting at $179/night)! Need more space? There are 13 two-room suites available for those with larger families.

Our favorite is the west-facing double suites that feature not one, but two sets of bunk beds! These bunk rooms were designed for kids to lounge in, with a large screen TV and faux-leather poufs! Each standard suite has a small microwave so you can conveniently heat up your DoorDash or reheat your cup of Starbuck’s. If you need more than a microwave, this hotel also has a Kitchen Suite (maximum 6 guests).

2. You Can Gather As a Group

Meghan Yudes Meyers

Has it been a minute since you've seen loved ones? This hotel has amble space to gather... for free! The second floor features a space aptly named the Living Room where you and your fam can lounge, play or watch TV en masse. Want to grab a bite? You can reserve The Conservatory, a private party room at the hotel's signature restaurant, Tin Cup Kitchen + Oyster Bar, for no additional fee (seats 50), or host a smaller gathering on the Dune Deck.

3. A State Park Is Just Steps Away

Hwal L. via Yelp

First Landing State Park, VA's most visited state park, is just a foot path (or bike ride) away. First Landing boasts over 20 miles of trails and 1.5 miles of coastline. Visitors prefer this park for its kid-friendly hiking and calm waters. Hotel guests can gain access to Cape Henry Trail, a 7.5-mile path that winds through the wooded acres of First Landing, directly across the street from Delta Hotels. Cape Henry Trail is bike-friendly; bike rentals are available at the hotel's boutique, Seas the Day, for $12/hr (helmets are complimentary).

4. Calm Waters Welcome Little Swimmers

Meghan Yudes Meyers

Delta Hotels Virginia Beach is the ONLY hotel that sits on a private beach on this bay. While the ocean is just under 2 miles away (by shore), the bay offers mild waves and calm waters which makes for a safer beach experience for the littles. These waters are so tranquil you can launch a kayak  or paddle board straight from the beach. Both are available to rent from Seas the Day for $35/hr. (or $50/2 hr.; life jackets are complimentary).

5. Foodie Adventures Await

Taylor S. via Yelp

This hotel's on-site restaurant, Tin Cup Kitchen + Oyster Bar, showcases the best of Virginia's seafood scene, from Upper Bay to Seaside oysters to the Chesapeake Bay's sugar toads, crabs and more. If you've never tried puffer fish (considered both dangerous and a delicacy), you have to dive in to its regional equivalent, sugar toads, featured as an appetizer on the Tin Cup menu. Made famous by DC's own The Dabney, fans of The Dabney will appreciate this replicated version of sugar toads listed as Buffalo Sugar Toad on the menu—a lighter, crispier version of a buffalo wing.

You'll also find beachside staples like burgers and fried chicken sandwiches. The kids' menu includes chicken tenders, mac & cheese, grilled cheese and grilled chicken. Tin Cup has a laid-back atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor dining. Bonus: the entire restaurant boasts water views!

6. You Never Have to Leave Your Hotel

Meghan Yudes Meyers

Delta Hotels Virginia Beach overlooks the beautiful Chesapeake Bay for stunning views from sunrise to sunset (speaking of, the early morning and evening shows on this beach are worth the trip alone!). You can play on the sandy shores, lounge by the outdoor (heated!) pool, take a hike through First Landing State Park, bike near-by trails and paths, kayak (or paddle board) the calm bay waters and chow down on some of the best seafood in VA Beach... all while on (or near) the property!

7. It's Convenient to VA Beach Attractions

At Delta Hotels Virginia Beach, you can get away from it all (literally) with a location perched on the only private beach on the bay! Sheltered by First Landing State Park, this hotel feels worlds away from the VA Beach strip, but conveniently located for those looking to dive in to touristy fun. Our fav? The Virginia Aquarium & Science Center! Whether it is a rainy day or you're just looking to dive in with the fishes, this aquarium features an outdoor tank filled with seals (feedings occur throughout the day), an aquarium tunnel where you can walk beneath the sharks, turtles and sting rays, and an outdoor nature path where you can explore the local wildlife (and littles can run off some steam!).

Lake Balboa at Anthony C. Beilenson Park
This popular South Valley park is open sunrise to sunset and is a popular attraction for both families and nature lovers. The centerpiece of the park is Lake Balboa, a 27-acre lake that, in addition to the beautiful scenery, acts as a preserve to the hundreds of ducks and wildlife that call it home. In addition to walking the 1.3 mile path surrounding the lake, you can also enjoy a leisurely afternoon of fishing or boating from any of the designated areas or launch ramps. With BBQ pits, picnic benches, playgrounds and bike rentals it’s easy to spend the whole day here. Just keep in mind that because Lake Balboa is a wildlife preserve, they ask that you do not feed these ducks in order to protect their migration habits. So leave the bread at home or use it to feed your own ducklings instead.

Heavenly Pond at Franklin Canyon
Tucked away in the hills off Mulholland and Coldwater, Franklin Canyon Park is 605 acres of wilderness heaven. Located between Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley, Franklin Canyon is not only a piece of Hollywood history, but also home to the many ducks that reside at Heavenly Pond year-round. When looking for on-site parking, take your time driving through and stop fully at STOP signs, as patrons have been known to get tickets from the eye-in-the-sky cameras. Past the main parking lot there’s another lot closer to Franklin Canyon Lake. To the west of the lake, a stroller friendly walk will bring you to the small pond alive with ducks, turtles and koi fish eager to entertain your small flock of curious kiddos. Pack a lunch to enjoy at one of the few benches beside the pond or walk a little further east to the picnic grounds by the Sooky Goldman Nature Center.  If you choose to bring the four-legged family members along for the fun, the park asks that they remain on leashes so as not to disturb the wildlife.  Here are more of our tips for exploring Franklin Canyon.

Eastsiders take refuge in glorious Echo Park where they bask in the sun, shade and gorgeous views of down town LA. This park tends to be busier later in the day so if crowds aren’t your thing plan to make it a morning affair. Although the fun is ample, the parking is not, so be prepared to circle the lake to find the perfect spot.

Douglas Park
This popular urban park in Santa Monica has a relaxing, fun vibe and is great for both toddlers and older kids. While the big kids “take to the streets” in the designated bike and scooter area, the toddlers toddle free within the fenced -n playground geared toward kids ages 5 & under. Across the beautiful green grass you’ll find 3 reflecting pools and a mini flowing river that double as a duck and turtle pond with a quaint little bridge ideal for taking pictures or playing “Pooh sticks.” A popular spot for weekend parties, this park has lots of family fun opportunities including a lawn bowling green, two lighted tennis courts and splash pad (open during the summer months). An onsite restroom and clubhouse available for reservations make this an ideal spot for birthday parties, too.

Polliwog Park
Encompassing 18 acres in Manhattan Beach, Polliwog Park is the largest park in the South Bay. The beautiful focal point of Polliwog is the large pond that is bordered on one side by a natural wildlife refuge and is a popular stopping ground for flocks of migratory birds. Dogs are welcomed, but for the sake of the feathered inhabitants, are required to enjoy the park from the designated dog run. In the summer be prepared to rock out with the ducks and geese of Polliwog Park as the park hosts evening concerts in the amphitheater overlooking the pond. While you may appreciate the exercise course for strength training, your little ones will love the 3 different play areas and running through the refreshing misters. Pack a cooler and take advantage of one of the 6 BBQs offered in the picnic area. After lunch take your flock on a tour of the grounds. In addition to the beautiful Rose Garden and the City’s Historical Museum, the southwest corner of the park is where you’ll find the Manhattan Beach Botanical Gardens, which is open to the public on a regular basis. Restrooms are readily available and ample shade is sure to make everyone happy. There are no parking lots on park grounds so your best bet is to find curbside parking along Redondo Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard.

Turtle Fun at CSUN Pond

Currently Closed: Cal State University Northridge (CSUN) Pond
Although this pond may technically be on a college campus, the peaceful site is open to the public. Nestled within a protected historical site of Orange Groves, ducks, turtles and Koi fish happily coexist in this sweet little pond. Turtle and Duck food is available for a quarter from a feeder but bringing your own bread or Cheerios is OK, too. Though sunny over the pond, there is ample shade beneath the fragrant orange trees or inside the lovely gazebo adjacent to the pond. If the smell of oranges is just too tempting, go ahead and help yourself, the campus permits orange picking. When school is in session, parking on the campus is tough but there is ample street parking off of Nordhoff or the neighboring residential streets.

Currently Closed: Los Encinos State Historic Park
Open Wednesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., this state park is a hidden valley gem. Luscious green grass, fragrant citrus trees, ample seating and BBQ pits make this park very inviting for long, lazy afternoons. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood at the corner of Balboa and Ventura Blvd in Encino, it’s more than just a duck pond. A historical site with rich California history, Los Encinos State Historic Park is also home to beautiful Rancho El Encino. This California rancho includes a blacksmith shop as well as the original nine-room de la Ossa Adobe, which are available for free guided tours by appointment. There’s also the two-story limestone Garnier building, which is open for self-guided tours during regular park hours. When you’re done learning about the past, come enjoy the present. Bring your quarters and grab a handful of duck food from the feeders surrounding the fenced in pond and let the little ones have fun feeding the many families of ducks that call this beautiful pond home.

Reseda Park
Located at the corner of Reseda and Victory Blvd, this park is a nice retreat in a busy part of town. A popular weekend spot, there is something to keep everyone in your family entertained sunrise to sunset. The little ones will have tons of fun in the fenced-in playground while the bigger kids enjoy the outdoor basketball, tennis or volleyball courts. When the summer heat gets too hot to handle, take a dip in the public pool or enjoy the picnic and grilling areas year round. A quick walk behind the 2 baseball diamonds will bring you right to the quaint duck pond overlooking the LA River. There aren’t any feeders at this pond so packing your own duck-friendly food is a must if lunching with the flock is on your agenda.

Big Changes Are Coming to Walt Disney World: Here’s What You Need to Know

LEGOLAND Florida Resort to Reopen June 1

Summer is right around the corner. In this time of social distancing, we’re scratching our heads about what that even means. Sure, many camps and pools are closed and the novel coronavirus feels anything but new at this point, but many government services and businesses are still innovating to make life in the social distancing era easier and fun. Whether you’re looking to re-create the camp experience or a vacation at home or you simply want a way to occupy the kiddos (and yourself) for a few hours without a screen, we’ve got ideas – 50 of them, in fact.

photo: iStock

1. Make the most of the great outdoors right behind your house by backyard camping.

2. That ninja camp didn’t work out? Set up an obstacle course at home or in the backyard.

3. Maybe your summer vacay is on hold, but you can still take virtual road trips.

4. Here are more ideas for at-home fun.

5. You know all that gas you’ve saved by not driving anywhere? Use it to visit five places you can see without leaving your car.

6. Sign the under 16 set up for a virtual running, cycling or swimming challenge.

7. Here’s a list of places best suited for two wheels and a list of bikes for every age.

8. Take a swim in a natural watering hole (and bonus! It has a waterfall).

9. Another option: make a road trip of touring Maryland’s waterfalls.

10. Yet another way to take to the water.

11. For more nature-based fun, download “A Field Guide to Fairfax County’s Plants and Wildlife” for free and then head outside to see what you can find.

12. Or become a National Park Service Junior Ranger from the comfort of your favorite computer screen.

13. Kingman and Heritage Islands in D.C. is a great – and off-the-beaten-path – spot for birding, biking and boating.

14. Grab your fishing gear and wait for a bite.

15. Pack a picnic and sunglasses, and plop down 6 feet away from others at Gravelly Point park to watch planes take off and land at Reagan National Airport.

16. For a closer view of some amazing aircraft, take a virtual tour of the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

17. Take a hike. No, really. Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton has several trails to accommodate safe spacing, or check out nearby Mason Neck State Park, which has canoe, kayak and bike rentals.

18. It’s tee time somewhere.

19. Quit putt-putting around and call to make sure these places are open. If they’re not, no worries.

41. Learn some tasty life skills.

42. Social distancing does not apply to date night.
