If something a little more exotic is on your radar for your next family vacation, Tahiti should be at the top of your list! With low-cost, direct flights on French bee available from SFO, it’s an easy getaway to another world. You won’t have the crowds of other island destinations and the kids will love learning some Tahitian and French phrases while you are on your tropical family vacation. Read on for the full scoop!

Have the Pool to Yourself

The island of Tahiti receives about as many visitors in a year as the Hawaiian islands receive in one weekend. So you can expect far fewer crowds and in general, a much less developed or touristy experience when you visit. This is especially evident when you head to the pool at your Tahitian hotel to find that you don't have to stake out a lounge chair before breakfast or jockey for a table at lunch.

One of our favorite Tahitian pool experiences is at the Manava Suite Resort Hotel. Just 15 minutes from the Papeete Airport, this hotel is a great option for families. Its massive pool has waterfalls, an infinity edge, a swim-up bar and gorgeous sunset views of the neighboring island of Moorea. In addition, you can swim and snorkel in the hotel's private lagoon as well as rent kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, jet skis and other water toys to venture out farther.

The hotel's suites are perfectly suited for families and we especially liked the two-bedroom duplex suite. It had two bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs and a pull-out couch and kitchen downstairs. The ability to purchase your own groceries will help you significantly cut down on food expenses during your visit. Bonus: it's right next door to an awesome food truck location (read more below).

Taste the Local Flavors from a Food Truck

Have you ever noticed that you can get the best tips from your cab driver on your drive from the airport? Ask about where to find the local food trucks and you'll be in for a feast of tastes, sights and smells. You can find these in downtown Papeete and also near the Manava Suite Resort Hotel (turn left out of the hotel and walk a short distance along the road to find the gathering on the side of the street along the water).

Expect to find trucks selling poisson cru (fresh fish served with coconut milk and vegetables, very similar to poke), steak fries, pizza, chow mein and other local specialties in massive portions. A bowl of chow mein that's enough to serve four adults will run you around $12, a drastic savings from resort restaurant prices. For kids, find a truck selling crepes and they'll be in heaven. From classic combos like ham and cheese to sweet options like Nutella and banana, the options are endless.

Stay at a Private Island Resort

Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia and where you will fly into when you head there from the U.S. Other popular islands like Moorea and Bora Bora can be reached by ferry or flights on Air Tahiti.

For the ultimate private island experience, head to Le Taha'a Resort and Spa. To get there, fly from Tahiti to the island of Raiatea (around $300/adult, less for kids 12 and under) where the resort will pick you up in a boat to take you to your island paradise. In addition to traditional overwater suites (which can sleep a couple plus one child), Le Taha'a offers massive beach villas to accommodate families. These villas are right on the beach and have a private plunge pool, air conditioning, outdoor shower and tub, free WiFi and a huge bathroom. The Royal Beach Villa has even more space with a second separate bedroom and bathroom that would be great for grandparents.

Resort features include the best breakfast buffet you'll ever have (no joking), a swimming pool, tennis court and spa. Kids 12 and under eat free when ordering off the kids menu at all the on-site restaurants. Just down the beach from the pool you can access the coral garden where you can snorkel using equipment provided by the resort. Because the resort like most of French Polynesia is surrounded by coral reefs, you'll have very minimal waves and shallow water that's perfect for kids to wade in. Insider tip: Ask the concierge to set up a treasure hunt for the kids!

Vanilla and Pearls and Views

The island of Taha'a is the place to go if you'd like to learn about Tahiti's history selling pearls and vanilla beans. Terainui Tours can give you the full experience as you tour the island's pearl farms to see for yourself how the most beautiful pearls are encouraged to grow in the waters just off shore. Then head to a nearby vanilla farm to learn how it takes hand pollination and a number of years of care to get the delicious vanilla beans that are then dried in the sun.

If you're lucky, your tour guide will take you to a local home up in the hills with gorgeous views of the valley below. On a recent tour, we had the pleasure of tasting local delicacies like poisson cru, breadfruit and coconut water. Experiences like this where you get to meet local people will give you a great feel for the warm culture of Tahiti.

Black Sand Is Magic

For a beach of a different sort, head to the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort on the island of Tahiti to enjoy the black sand of Matavai Bay. Located just a 15-minute drive from downtown Papeete, you'll love the relaxed tranquility that this hotel offers. Rooms include outdoor lanai balconies with water views and there are suites for families who need more room.

The hotel's massive pool is just steps from the black sand beach—look closely when the sun shines just right to see the golden sparkles in the sand. Dine in the outdoor courtyard or order a pizza to have delivered to your lounge chair while you watch the kids swim.

Don't pass up a chance to explore the hotel's rain forest courtyard in the lobby where the kids just might spot some massive snails or a gecko climbing a palm tree!

Learn About a New Culture

Take a break from the beach and spend some time touring Tahiti to learn a little bit about the culture of French Polynesia. You can take a Safari 4x4 to the Papenoo Valley to see waterfalls or a more leisurely Circle Island Tour to see some of the historical hot spots. Stops include landmarks such as Point Venus, Faaruumai Waterfall, Taputapuatea Marae and Maraa Fern Grotto. Kids will especially love visiting the Arahoho Blowhole and feeling the spray of the ocean!

Tahiti VIP Tours is a high-quality operator with vans that are large enough for groups and very informative guides. They are available for private tours and specialty services like helping you source an authentic ukulele to take home with you.

Waterfalls for Days

Don't miss out on visiting one or more of Tahiti's waterfalls while you are there. Book a tour that will take you on a half-day hike to some of the more majestic beauties or visit one that's right off the road for an easier option. We particularly loved the Faarumai Waterfalls as they were a quick five-minute walk from the parking lot and very impressive in height. They flow year round although they are more impressive in the rainy season.

Getting There with Ease—French bee

An airline that understands what it's like to travel with kids is key to getting off on the right start with your Tahitian adventure. French bee offers direct flights from SFO that will get you there in around eight hours and the price can't be beat. From $330/person one way to Tahiti, you can spend your vacation money on the vacation itself and not the flight.

Kids will love the free in-flight entertainment where they can play games or watch movies like Home Alone to pass the time in the air. They will also get a kick out of the external cameras where you can see what it's like for the pilots to land the plane. Bulkhead rows with bassinets are available for those travelling with little ones. Meals, baggage and drinks are extra so plan ahead and save yourself some money by packing your own snacks. Families are able to board early and the 3-4-3 seating arrangement means that you can all sit together once on board.

Tips for Tahiti Travel

  • Tahiti uses the French Polynesian Franc (CFP). The Papeete airport has ATMs and a currency exchange to get you hooked up when you arrive.
  • If your hotel doesn't have WiFi or you will be traveling around the islands, you might want to consider renting a pocket router from Tahiti WiFi. You can pick it up from the Papeete airport and return it when you fly out.
  • Bring bug spray and reef-safe sunscreen. Mosquitoes are present in the inner part of Tahiti and on many of the other islands so protect your family with a good bug spray. You'll also want to make sure any sunscreen you bring along will not damage the reefs so look for ones that say "reef safe" or "ocean safe."
  • You'll need a power adapter for your electronics. We like this one as it packs up small and doesn't have parts you can lose.

The most epic attraction ever, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is a thrilling experience that will leave you awestruck. The ride is part walk-through, part multiple ride systems, as you join the battle against the First Order. You’ll encounter live characters, a sea of stormtroopers, holograms, beloved Star Wars creatures and droids, towering AT-ATs, General Hux, Kylo Ren and more during this unforgettable journey into a realistic dark side that makes you feel as though you’ve landed in a battle scene in a galaxy far, far away. Your current reality is erased by mind-blowing special effects in this totally immersive adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Know before you go: Boarding Passes for this attraction are in high demand, making them hard to get. Download the Disneyland app before you get to the Parks and arrive early (before park opening) to have a shot at securing passes. Once you enter Disneyland Park, use the Disneyland app to request to join the virtual queue for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. You’ll then be assigned a boarding group that will admit you to the ride. You can check the app and in-park signs to see which boarding group is currently being admitted to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

Parents: Disneyland advises that this attraction is dark, loud and scary with small drops. We think young Jedi will really love it, but little ones who aren’t familiar with Star Wars culture may need extra encouragement.

Your Family’s Guide to Visiting Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge

Disneyland is Bringing Back a Popular Discounted Ticket

Disneyland Has a Secret New Dole Whip & There’s Only 1 Spot to Get It

When you are itching for a family vacation that includes snow and small town charm, make plans to head to Ketchum, Idaho. From the minute you land in the Sun Valley Airport, the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. Scroll through to discover all that you’ll find when you spend your winter vacation here.

1. Idaho is a winter wonderland.

Kate Loweth

Whether your main reason to visit is to hit the slopes or you are looking for some off-mountain winter adventures, there's so much to do here. The small Sun Valley Airport majorly increases the number of direct flights during the winter months (from LA, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Denver) so that getting there is easy from wherever you live. Even the 20 minute drive from the airport to the adorable town of Ketchum is full of snow-topped mountains, rushing rivers and even elk.

2. The Limelight Hotel Ketchum is the perfect family home base.

Kate Loweth

A stay at the Limelight Hotel Ketchum is easy and that starts from your arrival at the airport. The hotel runs a shuttle to pick you up and you can take the shuttle from the hotel to the ski areas and pretty much anywhere around town that you'd like to go. This allows you to skip renting a car entirely. If you need to borrow a ride to go farther out of town, ask the concierge about their Audi e-tron test drive program

Families will love the amply-sized rooms at the Limelight that have room for all your winter gear and amazing views of the nearby mountains. They even have two- and three-bedroom residences on the top floor that have full kitchens, huge bathrooms, multiple balconies and room to spread out.

Forgot your gloves or goggles at home? Sturtevants is the onsite ski and snowboard rental shop that can hook you up. Or, head to the massive (and amazing) Gold Mine resale shop a few blocks away where they have literally everything you might need for a snowy adventure. When you return from your day of skiing, store your gear in the ski locker on the first floor of the hotel so that you don't have to schlep everything up to your room.

Warm up after a day on the slopes with a dip in the heated outdoor pool or grab some s'mores packs to get cooking on the outdoor fire pits. You can even peer up at the skiers on the mountains or the stars in the evening with the hotel's telescope located near the ballroom.

Hotel stays come with a generous breakfast buffet in the lounge. Here you can also enjoy live music Friday through Sunday nights during peak season while you enjoy a drink and a pizza from their wood-fired pizza oven.

The kid-favorite feature of the Limelight Hotel has got to be the game room that's right off the lounge. Here they can battle in a vintage game of Donkey Kong, read books, play with puzzles and more. Kids can hang out within eyesight of parents, giving parents the opportunity to relax and enjoy their meal and the live music. There's also a tabletop shuffle board in the lounge that's fun for all ages.

3. Sun Valley Lodge offers dining, ice skating and shopping.

Kate Loweth

A visit to Sun Valley Lodge should definitely be on your must-do list when you head to Ketchum. The shuttle from the Limelight Hotel will get you there in about 10 minutes and you'll want to stay all day. Walk through the lobby and you'll see their outdoor ice rink with skates you can rent right there. Downstairs in the lodge you'll find their game room and bowling alley, complete with arcade games, appetizers and even adult beverages—perfect for a winter afternoon.

Just a short walk from the main building is the Sun Valley Village—an adorable grouping of restaurants and shops with everything from ski gear to souvenirs to homemade chocolates. We especially love Konditeri for a family-friendly meal with an Austrian twist. Or better yet, swing by to take a glimpse of their massive case of sweet treats. The holidays bring the Winter Wonderland festival to the Village with carolers, sleigh rides, cookie decorating and more. Check out their events calendar to see what's happening when you visit.

4. Take a day away at Galena Lodge.

Kate Loweth

Borrow the Audi e-tron from the Limelight and head out of town for some cross country skiing or snowshoeing at Galena Lodge. This gem in the woods is about a 30-minute drive from Ketchum and totally worth the effort to get there. Gear is available to rent onsite or bring your own if you've got it. They have tons of snowshoeing and cross country skiing trails for every ability. Kids will love showshoeing on the Galena View Trail as it's a nice loop with minimal elevation change. The views are epic and even your dog can join you on the adventure. You can book a guided snowshoe hike if you'd like an expert to lead the way.

After you've worked up an appetite, pick a spot by the fire inside the lodge and enjoy lunch. We recommend the grown-up grilled cheese and the chili of the day to get your warmed up. Everything is made in house and portions are generous and delicious! You won't want to get back in your car after you've had a chance to relax by the fire.

While you hang out in the lodge, the kids can head outside to grab one of the sleds that are available for visitors. The hills right next to to lodge are perfect to get them going.

For some extra-special adventure, Galena Lodge has yurts that you stay in for the night. They can only be accessed by skiing or snowshoeing!

5. Bald Mountain offers skiing and dining with an EPIC view.

Kate Loweth

Just a five minute shuttle ride from the Limelight Hotel will get you to the foot of Bald Mountain, the area's massive ski resort. Here you can do the usual skiing and snowboarding but we also have a recommendation for the non-skiers. Buy a "foot traffic" pass for the gondola and you can ride it up the mountain. At the top of the gondola, walk up the stairs to the Roundhouse where you can enjoy fondue with a view. Cozy up around the six-sided fireplace or grab a table at the window to watch the skiers hit the mountain. The lobster roll is another crowd favorite and the kids menu includes the usuals like chicken fingers and burgers.

Skiers looking for some mountain time on a smaller scale can spend the day at Sun Valley's Dollar Mountain, perfect for beginners.

6. Ketchum is full of history.

Kate Loweth

Sun Valley is famous for its beautiful mountains and is also well-known as the final resting place of American author Ernest Hemingway. While you can't visit his former home, you can take the kids to the Sun Valley Regional History Museum to learn about his time in Idaho. The museum is located right behind the Limelight Hotel and also has a fun train exhibit that the kids can drive themselves. Check out the pelts of animals that live in this area of the country and then venture next door to the museum's second building to see how ski clothing has changed over the years.

7. There's no shortage of great places to eat in town.

Kate Loweth

In addition to the amazing dining at the Limelight Hotel and Sun Valley Lodge, the main drag in Ketchum is full of restaurants that are perfect for a cold winter's night. We highly recommend heading to Pioneer Saloon to try out their giant steaks and even more giant baked potatoes. This low-key and welcoming restaurant is perfect for kids as the service is fast and friendly. Ask for a table by the kitchen and they'll be entertained while you wait. The Jim Spud is a not-to-be-missed item on the menu—a massive Idaho baked potato topped with teriyaki beef, cheese, sour cream and butter. YUM.

Despo's Mexican Restaurant is another family favorite with large portions and some of the best salsa we've ever had. They serve locally-sourced meats and are strongly committed to making environmental choices such as avoiding non-recyclable take out containers. We love that!

8. Idaho has it all, and more.

Kate Loweth

Put Sun Valley and Ketchum, Idaho on your list this winter for a long weekend (or more) of family fun. You'll have all the great skiing you want without having to deal with the crowds and craziness that comes from some ski destinations. And if you are looking for some off-the-mountain winter adventures, this area of the country can definitely deliver.

Epic International Adventures Worth Taking with Kids

17 Winter Vacation Ideas to Book Now

When you go somewhere with natural beauty, you want to stay where you can soak in the beauty of your surroundings. Barton Creek Resort & Spa recently reopened its doors after an extensive renovation; from the modern rustic architecture and impressive artwork to the lobby and porch that open up to hill country, the resort’s mission to bring the outdoors in is fully visualized. We got a sneak peek at the updated golf and spa resort located in the rolling hills above Austin, TX and can report back that it’s a perfect getaway spot for families. Discover our top three reasons why below.

Reason #1: Hill Country Beauty

Gabby Cullen

Barton Creek Resort & Spa is nestled in the Texas Hill Country, and the natural beauty surrounding the resort is stunning. Whether you play a round of golf, lounge at the pool, enjoy the great outdoors (the resort has plans to open a new nature trail in 2020) or relax on the lawn, you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of rolling hills. Lady Bird Lawn, located at the heart of the resort, offers chairs, fire pits and lawn games. Families can play, relax, make s’mores as the sun sets and enjoy live music as part of the Barton Creek Live (summer only) music series. There are three pools (the infinity-edge pool is only for adults) and a hot tub with impressive views that are open to all guests, and there’s a rooftop pool for spa guests ($50 for a day pass).

As for golfing, Barton Creek Resort & Spa is recognized as one of the best golf resorts in the Southwest. There are four courses (one is located off-property), and two of them, Fazio Foothills and Fazio Canyon, have been newly renovated along with the hotel. Both are designed to play up to the beauty of the surrounding hills.

Reason #2: Incredible Food

Gabby Cullen

Texans take their food seriously, and Barton Creek Resort & Spa is no exception. There are seven dining spots at the resort, and we were able to experience four. You’ll find an impressive breakfast buffet at Texas Spice, which includes overnight oats, fresh fruit, eggs, bagels and more. There’s also an a la carte menu with classic offerings like Texas Griddle Cakes and a migas bowl. Another perk of Texas Spice is that kids 12 & under eat for free.

For midday snacks or an easy dinner after a long day outdoors, Crenshaw’s pub-style dining is the best bet. Choose from fresh appetizers like hummus and veggies, and follow it with an impressive entree like the steak and fries or the redfish po’boy. The kid's menu offers easy options like PB&J, grilled cheese and chicken fingers. For adults, there’s also a list of fun cocktails, and the elevated margarita was a favorite.

Nopales is a fun spot for lunch before or after swimming—the patio opens up directly into the pool area. The menu is impressive: the nacho plate will feed the whole family, the empanadas are vegan (there are several other vegan options on the menu) and the shrimp ceviche has just enough spice. Kids will enjoy churros as a dessert option.

The real dining experience at Barton Creek, however, is the Blind Salamander. From windows that showcase the surrounding hills to the coastal-inspired decor, the restaurant itself is impressive. The menu offers dishes like oysters on the half shell, blackened Texas Gulf redfish, beef tenderloin among nightly specials. A favorite with our entire group was the homemade mac ‘n’ cheese. The creamy texture was a hit with the kids, and the rich flavor satisfied adult palates.

For a quick bite, snack or caffeine fix, head to Velvet Joe’s. You’ll find treats from Dylan’s Candy Bar, healthy food bars, a full coffee bar and other fun items.

Reason #3: Location, Location, Location

Gabby Cullen

Barton Creek Resort & Spa is about 20 minutes from downtown Austin. If you want to explore Texas’ capital city, you’ll be able to do so for a full day before coming back to Barton Creek to relax by the fire. It’s also close to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, which offers miles of hiking trails, waterfalls and the beauty of the hill country. If you want to explore Fredericksburg or go to Enchanted Rock, Barton Creek Resort & Spa is only a 40-minute drive. Fancy a day on the lake? Lake Travis is only 18 miles away.

The resort is a 4-hour drive from Dallas, 1.5 hours away from San Antonio and just under three hours away from Houston.

Rates start at $277 per night

Take a Castle Vacation in Ireland

Amber Guetebier

Built in 1180 by the first-ever Knights Templar, Kilkea Castle is only 30 minutes from the Dublin airport, but is a world (and era) away. Although many people visiting Ireland are tempted to try to hit all the hotspots, the Irish know the secret to a true vacation: several days spent together at a gorgeous castle.

We recommend requesting a stay in the castle itself, which has 11 guest rooms, or stay in one of the 30 historic carriage rooms. You'll also find on the 180-acre estate more modern cottages, many of which are self-catering. World-class food and a state-of-the-art spa are on site along with a renowned golf course. True to Irish custom, no matter how posh you'll still feel like you belong. Your kids will love roaming the gardens, playing tennis in the shadow of the castle or exploring nearby adventures like falconry or archery, or head to nearby Glenveagh National Park & Castle (more castle!) in the Wicklow Mountains.

Take a Vespa Street Food Tour through Vietnam

The Great Wolf Lodge has plenty to offer all ages and stages, from an epic water park to the MagiQuest adventures, story times and more. But if you’re looking for one more reason why you have to visit this hotel-waterpark near you? This summer they’re debuting the first-ever Summer Camp-In for adventures through Labor Day. Read on to find out what else is in store for your family this summer.

1. The Summer Camp-In

Lobby s'mores, anyone? Summer Camp-In, Great Wolf Lodge's summer themed decor and activities are brand new this year. Think summer-camp themed crafts like decorating pins and badges or making friendship bracelets, evening s'mores in the lobby, Bingo or trivia for families each night and super cute activities like the Rubber Ducky 500: Kids select and decorate a rubber ducky early in the day, register it in the water park and then watch to see which ducky wins the race down one of the water slides. (Plus, kiddos get to keep their ducky for a souvenir.) There are organized pool games and parties, and you can even get a summer-camp seasonal rooms.

2. The Waterpark

Great Wolf Lodge

Whether it's too hot or too cold, the Great Wolf Lodge's  indoor waterpark that is 84 degrees year round. Relax in Crooked Creek, a winding lazy river or let the tots splash around the multi-level Fort Mackenzie which recently got upgraded to included smaller-kiddo sized water slides and is surrounded by well-placed tables and lounge chairs for the parents. You can also test your balance on the Wolf Rider Wipeout and coax the whole family to take the River Canyon Run, a tube ride with an interactive Splash Cinema.

Plus, as of June 28, 2019 day passes are now on sale to visit the waterpark even if you aren't staying overnight!

video: Amber Guetebier

Good to know: Safety is a priority, and there are plenty of Coast Guard certified water jackets on hand, including ones fit for toddlers. Some of the rides, like the Totem Towers and the Wolf Rider Wipeout have height requirements but do not fear: even your smallest kiddos will not feel left out.

Dial It In: Claim a lounger by Fort Mackenzie and order yourself up some fancy house drinks from the Watering Hole. You don’t even need your wallet: just scan your wristband and the cocktails get charged right to your room.

3. The Rooms

Great Wolf Lodge

Whether you've got a big clan or it's just you plus one, there are rooms for your family at the Great Wolf Lodge. Upgrade any room during the summer with the Summer Camp-In package. You'll get a pup-tent, decorations and even a campfire-shaped light.

The most popular room is the Deluxe Bunk Bed Suite, which has built-in bunks and a queen bed, as well as a pull-out couch. The rooms are spacious enough to chill in after a busy day and all rooms at the Great Wolf Lodge include mini-fridges and microwaves. Other great options include rooms with multiple queen-sized beds, rooms with double bunks in a separate space (Queen Cabin Suite with themed KidCabin) and even big family suites like the Grizzly Family Suite which sleeps 12 and the Northwoods Suite which sleeps 12 and includes a fireplace.

Good to know: Unless you spring for a room with separate bunks (KidCabin) you and the family will all be in the same room. This isn't a bad thing, since this is a family vaycay, but if you're hoping for some downtime/privacy after the kids sack out and you've got light sleepers, you should upgrade.

4. The Great Wolf Adventure Park

Preston Mack. Great Wolf Lodge

If the Water Park is the crown jewel, we think the Adventure Park is the hidden gem. With plenty of different level arcade games, a climbing wall, a ropes course and a mining experience you'll find hours of fun right there. Plus, there's Ten-Paw Bowling (ten pin bowling! you never see these anymore!) that even the littles can master. Grab some pizza and salad at Hungry Like a Wolf on the second level and then hit the lanes.

5. MagiQuest

Great Wolf Lodge

No visit to the Great Wolf Lodge is complete without an introduction to MagiQuest—the interactive game that is like a scavenger hunt meets video game. But don't be fooled—there's very little screen time and kids and their parents will get lots of exercise. Wander the lodge communing with Pixies and battling dragons. Start your Quest at the MagiQuest shop where you procure a wand and declare your Quest name. Throughout the second and first floors, you'll find the wands react with features, stations (called "portals") and more. Light up crystals, make paintings talk and more as you solve each level. And if you find yourself heading to a different Great Wolf Lodge location, bring your wand! It will work for the adventure at any location.

Bonus: See what your wand does to the bear in the lobby.

6. Build-a-Bear Onsite

Great Wolf Lodge

For a souvenir worth snuggling, stop by the main gift shop's Build-a-Bear station where kiddos can build bears or a Great Wolf Lodge character (like a wolf) and then outfit them with Great Wolf Lodge-appropriate attire. character outfits.

7. Food & Drink

Great Wolf Lodge

There are seven different food and drink spots on site, including a Dunkin Donuts, Hungry Like a Wolf pizza place, Camp Fire which offers a breakfast buffet as well as lunch and dinner, Buckets Incredible Cravings (right inside the water park) and a Ben & Jerry's.

Insider tip for coffee drinkers: There's no beloved Caribou on site so your main coffee house is Dunkin Donuts. You have been warned.

8. The Staff

Andie Huber

Every time we've visited, we've noted the wonderful treatment toward guests by the staff. From the enthusiastic customer service at the MagiQuest Marketplace to the managers on site who can make the Northwoods Friend Adventure show appear "like magic" in spite of the schedule, every employee you and your kids interact with will make your family feel like they are honored guests. Knowing your kids are not going to be ignored or chastised goes a long way toward making any parent feel good about taking their family somewhere. Kudos to the staff at this Great Wolf Lodge location.

Special shoutout: On our most recent visit we witnessed a young employee (Sophie M.) take swift action when she found a child crying, separated from his family. She quickly consoled him while she called security to come and help locate his parents, and explained to the boy what was happening all along so he wasn't as scared.  As a parent, this is exactly what you would hope for if your kid encountered this situation. Kudos, Great Wolf Lodge!

Best Deal

Preston Mack. Great Wolf Lodge

Rooms start at as little as $99. The best bet for parents with busy kids is the to grab either a Pup Pass, a Paw Pass or an Adventure Park Pass. The most popular is the Paw Pass, which includes a MagiQuest wand, topper and game; one game (for one) at Ten Paw Alley, a pass on the ropes course, and two climbs on the climbing wall. Kids also get a cup of bulk candy and a scoop of Ben & Jerry's, too, along with 20 credits at the Arcade.

All guests receive a wristband. Grown-up wristbands also act as a room key, a "wallet" so that you can charge directly to your room and allows access to the waterpark. Kids wristbands do not open rooms nor make charges but they can help reunite lost kiddos and parents. If a kiddo finds themselves alone, any Great Wolf Lodge employee can scan the band and help locate the parents or alert security to take them to the front desk where the parents are quickly located.

Daily shuttles between the property and both MSP and the Mall of America occur every 30 minutes.

Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa - Tuscany, Italy

Wendy Altschuler

Imagine sipping your morning coffee from the balcony, while listening to the sounds of birds and a barking dog or two off in the distance, as you survey the verdant countryside below. After room service or a full breakfast in Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa’s restaurant, La Veranda, you’ll head out to explore the local village of Barga with the hotel’s expert chef. Your family will handpick ingredients from a local market, visit the cheese and meat shops, and see what Tuscan living is really all about. Once you’ve made it back to the hotel, you’ll don chef hats and aprons and participate in an Italian cooking lesson in the kitchen. The whole family will whirl around the bubbling pots of tomato sauce, shape pasta by hand, and slice up vegetables. The Valley Isle: Maui

Pascal DeBrunner via Unsplash

This second-largest Hawaiian island is exactly what we picture when we think of “paradise”. The beaches—sandy to rocky, dark to light—are as varied as the diverse landscapes and it’s easy to see why Conde Nast Traveler would vote Maui as the “Best Island in the U.S.” Visit the Iao Valley, spot migrating humpback whales on the horizon, satiate your palate with farm-to-table fresh meals, drive the winding Road to Hana, and watch the sunrise or sunset from Haleakala “House of the Sun”, a dormant volcano. Experience the spirit of Aloha and learn about the dances, art, and culture through hula and festive luaus. Kids will love the Maui Ocean Center, home to manta rays and sharks; the Hawaii Nature Center, in Wailuku; and the Junior Ranger program at Haleakala Visitor Center.

Luxury properties that are sure to “wow” your family: Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, Grand Wailea—a Waldorf Astoria Resort, Fairmont Kea Lani Maui, Travaasa Hana and the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa. Family programming abounds at these high-end, well-located resorts.

Westin Playa Bonita, Panama

Wendy Altschuler

If you’re an intrepid family that has visited many places and is looking for a destination that is unique, give Panama a try. The country is full of appetizing local cuisine, rich cultural and ecological experiences, and where you can see the sun rise on the Pacific and set on the Atlantic. Of course, the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal is a must-see. The canal generates a huge chunk of the country’s economy. It’s here, at the crossroads of the Americas, where you can visit Casco Viejo’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you have a sloth fan in your family, visit the Gamboa Sloth Sanctuary and Wildlife Rescue Center where you can see these magical slowly-moving creatures up close. You can also ride a narrow tram to the top of a lookout, spotting wildlife along the way.

Stay on a high floor at the stunning Westin Playa Bonita, a beach oasis with indelible panoramic Pacific Ocean views, located 20 minutes from Panama City and 30 minutes from the canal’s Miraflores Locks. You can hear the container ships, off in the distance, waiting their turn to enter the famed canal. The hotel features multiple dining options, three swimming pools, and a Club Lounge that is a welcome respite.

Rooms with Club Lounge access and a balcony with an ocean view, start at $200 per night.

Colorful Colorado

Adventure awaits in Colorado, a state that should really be called “The Sunshine State” because it receives over 300 sunny days per year. From horseback riding at dude ranches to ATV rides to whitewater rafting to kayaking, this state has it all. Culture, history, outdoor activities, great dining, charming towns (hello, Vail, Glenwood Springs, Estes Park and Golden) and unique attractions are what this state is all about.

Check out the historic hot springs loop, which includes five destinations that highlight nearly 20 different hot spring facilities: Chaffee County, Pagosa Springs, Ouray County, Glenwood Springs and Steamboat Springs. Ouray Hot Springs recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation, Iron Mountain Hot Springs has 16 mineral hot springs pools and a separate family pool, Strawberry Park Hot Springs is a popular outdoor hangout, and Antero Hot Springs features three cabins decked out with their very own hot springs-fed pools.

Dude ranches are one of those quintessential family-friendly experiences that everyone should indulge in at least once. For those awe-inspiring views and horseback riding activities, book a stay at Vista Verde Ranch in Steamboat Springs, Sundance Trail Guest Ranch near Roosevelt National Forest, M Lazy C Ranch with views of Lake George, Coulter Lake Guest Ranch or Latigo Ranch
