This Study Says It’s Okay If Your House Isn’t Spotless—Nor Should It Be

If you’ve got the kind of green thumb that makes most houseplants go extinct, we’ve got your solution right here! A small-scaled terrarium that’s home to dinosaurs! It’s easy to make, hard to kill and brought to you by horticulturist Katie Elzer-Peters. Read on to find out how to DIY a fairy-sized and kid-friendly version of Jurassic Park.

Mason Jar pp 145

Supplies:
Glass container (mason jar works)
Small low-light pants (i.e. table ferns, polka dot plants, Selaginella, Croton, Alternanthera, and Ficus plants)
Few cups of sterilized seedling mix or potting soil
Reindeer moss
Activated charcoal
Dinosaur figurines

Dinosaur Terrarium Photo 2

Good to Know: Enclosed terrariums need a little light for the plants to grow and keep the water cycle going. Otherwise, plants will rot. If you can see condensation inside of the glass, then the terrarium is getting enough light. If the plants start to rot or become mushy, open the cover and let it dry out for a week or so. It may take a while to find the right balance of water for the terrarium to reach equilibrium.

Step by Step:
1. Fill the bottom of the container with ½ to 1 inch of rocks.

2. Pour activated charcoal on top of the rocks until the rocks are barely covered by the charcoal.

3. Add the potting mix on top of the charcoal. Start with 1 inch of potting mix. This doesn’t seem like much, but it is easier to start with a little, than it is to add more potting mix and dig holes.

4. Place the plants. If you’re using accessories, such as the dinosaur, you can set them in among the plants to gauge the effect see if you want to move the plants around prior to planting.

5. Remove plants from pots and plant them. The bottom of the plant root balls can be touching the rocks. Use a spoon to fill in with soil around the plants.

6. Add decorative mulches such as preserved reindeer moss or tumbled stones.

7. Position the accessories.

8. Water the terrarium. This is the trickiest step. It’s easy to overwater and then difficult to get the terrarium to dry out. Start by watering so that the top inch of soil (which might, in this case, be all of the soil) is about as damp as a wrung-out sponge. You can always add water.

9. Place the cover on the terrarium, set it in bright indirect light, and enjoy.

Even in such a small terrarium, you can make separate little scenes. Ideally, you’ll use accessories to make the terrarium interesting and inviting from all sides.

The soft, expandable gates are lightweight yet durable with heavy-duty webbing, and they’re travel-ready for wherever you may go with baby in tow. Be Sun Smart With Baby: 10 Summer Safety Tips to Follow

“Either you have a pleasant morning or everyone gets to school on time.”

This saying rings so true in our house. As a single working parent to three amazing humans, MOST days it is an uphill battle to keep everyone organized and out the door ON TIME.

My kids are 10, 7 and 4 in grades 5, 2 and preschool. We have two different school drop offs, carpool, multiple teachers, after-school clubs, tutors, counselors, sports/music lessons and a co-parenting schedule all to juggle each week—not to mention my own work schedule. I wake up at 4:30 a.m. and exercise; then I wake the kids up at 6 a.m., so we can leave the house by 7 a.m. to get to elementary school then preschool, then my office by 8:30 a.m. at the latest. Usually that means breakfast is to-go in the car.

The Tools

We use these ‘bento box’ st‌yle trays that we can pop in granola bars, milk, yogurt, sausages, rolls, etc and each person places it on their lap in the car.

Breakfasts choices are super easy: toasted bagels, pillsbury croissants, frozen waffles and pancakes, etc. We always keep Horizon boxed milk on hand for car-rides. Sometimes those squeeze fruit packs are great, too.

Lunches we use a mix or reusable snack and sandwich baggies and disposable snacks, boxed milk and juices. Kids usually do a pre-pack the night before ( fruit, carrots, snacks, etc) then a sandwich the morning-of.

Stashed in my car console are these awesome reusable antibacterial Norwex towels that kids use to wipe hands and they can absorb an entire can of soda (amazing!)—and we have wet wipes, too. And don’t forget a garbage bag in the van! I drive a Honda Odyssey so lots of room for “The Stuff,” plus cup holders galore.

We do keep a hand-held vacuum in the car and we keep these handy charcoal odor absorbing tubes spread around to keep things from turning into an absolute scary-van.

Finding Their Motivation

Even with all the prep and tools, my kids were just not getting out of bed on time. I would wake them up, then they would just lay there for 30 minutes until I got super angry. Meanwhile, I was stressed that they wouldn’t have time to pack their lunches or grab breakfast, so I ended up doing ALL of it for them. Which taught them that I would continue to do that, while they slept in. GRRRRR.

We had the pep talk. We had the reminder pep talk. Then the “threatening” pep talk. Then the drill-sergeant pep talk… then the crying pep talk… all by mom, the supposed leader of the family—yeah, it wasn’t working. It was all emotion-based on my end and they knew I was outnumbered. Kids are so intuitive!

I decided to change my strategy. “How can I teach them the consequence of being dependable?” I wondered. They needed to have a fear of letting down THE GROUP if they “forgot” or didn’t do their part. I decided to have the older two split the duties of 1) making lunches for everyone or 2) making breakfast for everyone

They would switch off daily to mix it up and could negotiate the schedule themselves. If someone was lazy, everyone would suffer. This seemed to do the trick for us and motivated the kids to get it in gear!

So, a few weeks in and it’s not perfect, but it takes WAY less pleading to get them up and moving. I just have to say one reminder: “Don’t forget you have lunch-duty or breakfast-duty. Let me know if I can help”—and they’re on it.

I hope you find what works to motivate your crew—and maybe you have gleaned a few tips and tricks from our crazy routine here! Best of luck and just remember to keep trying until you find something that works. Have grace with yourself and your family and know that you are doing better than you think you are.

National #HeatAwarenessDay isn’t just about keepin’ it cool: turn up the temperature on today’s topic with these truths and lies about heat science. Read on for hot tips.

photo: Jayphen via flickr

Heat vs Temp
Hot and cold are thrown about as handy adjectives from early vocab days, and although used interchangeably to describe both heat and temperature, they aren’t the same thing. Help the kiddos understand with these basic (sciency-based) definitions: Heat is stored energy inside something and temperature is how hot or cold something is. And just because an object measures a certain temp., that doesn’t tell us how much heat energy it’s storing.

Heat Lightning
Thunder without lightning? Heat lightning has a rep for occurring sans thunderstorm. It usually takes place on warm, humid nights and appears like faint flashes in the sky. But where’s the thunder? It’s there. It’s just too far away for you to hear it, making this a myth that heat lightening doesn’t have accompanying thunder. But if a thunderclap occurs on the prairie with no one around to hear it…

Feel the Burn
Did you know that people who eat spicy foods together are more likely to bond? A medical study shows that “shared pain” helps team bonding. They compared the results of a group who ate a very spicy pepper together prior to a game with a team who didn’t eat said insanely hot pepper. Turns out the spicy peeps were way more motivated to work as a group and help each other out. The same concept can apply to running a race or even group fitness classes: knowing you aren’t alone through “the burn” can keep your head in the game.

Hot Head
Putting on a hat when it’s chilly out just makes sense, but is it because you lose body heat from your head? Maybe you even remember your mom or dad (and yes, you’ve said it to your own kids) telling you that you lose 40% of your body heat through your noggin. Well that old adage is based on a somewhat vague study done in the 1950s: the US military tested volunteers wearing Arctic gear in cold conditions. Because the only part of their body left uncovered was their head, the study estimated that nearly half the body’s heat was lost through the head. But according to Rachel Vreeman and Aaron Carroll, pediatricians from Indiana University in Indianapolis, this percentage is just a myth. If it were true, you’d be just as cold without a hat as you would without pants! You could do the same experiment wearing just swim trunks and lose only about 10% of body heat from your head. Still, a hat keeps the snow off and is the perfect solution to bad hair days: so if you want to keep this myth going, we’re not judging.

Bam!
Wait, something can just burst into flames, seemingly without cause? Well, technically yes. Plain ol’ combustion occurs when something is heated on purpose to the point of catching fire (charcoal, meet lighter). Spontaneous combustion is caused by spontaneous heating, which means something increases in heat without being heated on purpose. When many substances break down, they go through slow oxidation: the process of becoming chemically combined with oxygen. This releases heat. If the heat becomes trapped, it can lead to combustion without a direct flame. Things like oily rags and fertilizers can experience this. As for spontaneous human combustion? Rest well, because it’s pretty much a myth, though their may be a scientific explanation for some cases.

No self-respecting Angeleno can pass up Taco Tuesdays or a well-crafted California roll but we usually think of the most mouthwatering Q as the provenance of Texas or St. Louis.  But, believe it or not, Los Angeles has some spectacular spots where you can slather on sauce and gnaw on bones. Grab a bucket of wet-wipes and check out these 6 BBQ joints that are sure to please both you and your pint-sized pitmaster.

Horse Thief
Right outside Grand Central Market, across from Angel’s Flight and the Pershing Square Metro station, Horse Thief lets you and your little ones indulge in sunny California weather, down-home barbecue and the always-entertaining LA people watching all at once. With refreshing and not-too-sweet lemonade for the tots and a well stocked bar to wash down your rib-tips or pulled pork, the whole family will leave satisfied. This place can get crowded during the weekday lunch rush so plan accordingly. And wash off all that sticky sauce with a run through the fountains at Grand Park.

Bludso’s BAR-&-QUE
One word: brisket. You haven’t tasted barbecued brisket until you’ve sunk your teeth into Bludso’s tender, melt-in-your-mouth fabulous brisket. Your kiddos will devour their gooey mac-n-cheese while cheering on their favorite team playing on one of the many TV’s and you can sit back and sip on a tasty cocktail from their extensive bar while remembering the deliciousness that was the brisket you just inhaled. Don’t forget to order the house made pickles.  They’re just sweet enough that the kids will fight you for them.  Good! They could use a little greens with the meal.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit
While you can’t go wrong with traditional barbecue at Dickey’s (their sauces are fantastic), if your appetite is big enough, you won’t regret trying one of their “Bakers”: huge baked potatoes filled with butter, sour cream, cheese, green onions and bacon topped with one of their smoked meats. You’ll love that kids eat free on Sundays and they’ll love the free self-serve ice cream available every day.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has multiple locations in LA including Redondo Beach, Pasadena and
Woodland Hills. For hours and directions, check their website.

Baby Blues B.B.Q.
This joint is not for those watching their waistlines. With dinner items like the Memphis Queen (a half-rack of baby back ribs and a half-rack of Memphis-style ribs) and drink options that include unlimited refills of the “red” Kool-Aid of your childhood (ahhh, now it’s summer—remember calling it bug juice at camp?) or southern sweet tea, Baby Blues is not interested in impressing your cardiologist or your kiddos’ pediatrician. Make sure to taste test the 4 different sauces at your table so everyone can mix up their own creation with the perfect balance of sweet, savory and spicy.

Baby Blues has locations in both Venice and West Hollywood. For hours and directions, check their website.

Charcoal BBQ – Bourbon & Beer
If you’re looking for a slightly more upscale dining experience, try the brand new Charcoal BBQ in Silverlake. With menu items not found at most traditional barbecue spots (pork banh mi, anyone?) you can get your barbecue fix in a more creative way. Kids have their own separate menu (with mac-n-cheese that you will probably steal many bites of) and everyone can snack on a bucket of bacon (yes!) while you relax with one of their special bourbon or whiskey cocktails. At the end of the meal, indulge in gooey s’mores you make right at your own table. Self-parking is limited but there’s valet service in front in case you can’t score a meter.

Holy Cow BBQ
Across from the Brentwood Country Mart, Holy Cow serves up smoked barbecue so tender the meat falls off the bone and you have plenty of local wines and beers to choose from to wash down all that juicy, flavorful goodness. Holy Cow has a separate kids menu with a burger so tasty you’ll beg your little one for a bite. The metered street parking is extremely limited but if you park at the Brentwood Country Mart, you can get 3 hours free parking with validation from one of the shops.
