Nothing warms you up for game day quite like chasing a one-year-old on the basketball court. NBA player and dad, Russell Westbrook took his son, Noah, to work and we’re pretty sure he wins MVP for cuteness.

The Oklahoma City Thunder point guard brought his pint-sized trainer to the court a little pre-game warm-up where they took turns assisting each other’s baskets, which in Noah’s case were provided by dad’s arms forming a circle to shoot the ball through.

Fans praised the adorable video, which the team posted on Twitter, pointing out that Westbrook is a great dad and role model. Being a dad clearly inspires Westbrook in his career, the point guard recently unveiled his new athletic shoe collab with Nike Jordan and was proud to announce that the shoe, which Noah modeled, comes in full family sizing, “so every athlete, no matter their age, has a shoe they feel proud to play in.”

If you’ve only used your high chair for meals, get ready to knock your parenting game up a notch. With these easy ideas for high chair activities, your baby will be safely contained and entertained, giving you a chance to whip up dinner, make a quick call, do some cleaning, or finish your own meal.

Stirring the Senses

Bradley Gordon via Flickr

Sometimes, around-the-house items like a wooden spoon or spatula can serve as the best toys or distractions for baby. Hand one over while you're cooking and let baby chew, touch and bang to their heart's content.

Magnetic Magic

torbakhopper via Flickr

Place a small metal pan and a handful of magnetic letters, shapes or animals on your child's high chair to keep baby busy with sliding and touching the different shapes. Choose large items with securely affixed magnets to avoid a choking hazard. If the pan goes crashing down from the high chair, the magnets should keep the items from going flying.

Flour Power

Amberlei Hellewell via Flickr

In the middle of baking? Let baby get involved by sprinkling a bit of flour on the high-chair tray for them to push around...and probably get all over themselves.

Banish Boredom with Beads

This classic wooden-bead maze toy, the Melissa & Doug First Bead Maze ($13.99), comes with attached suction cups that make it perfect for high chairs. (Bonus: You can tote it to restaurants to keep babe entertained before the food comes.)

Musical Chair

Dano via Flickr

Turn off the tunes and let your little one make the music instead. Tiny maracas, cymbals or a xylophone are all great ways for baby to shake or bang out a catchy beat from the comfort of the high chair.

Golden Globe

Hello Bee

Who isn't mesmerized by a snow globe or its DIY equivalent? Fill a water bottle with water or oil, glitter and small items such as shells, buttons or beads to create your own baby-safe snow globe or sensory bottle.

It's in the Bag

Can Do Kiddo

Unleash your baby's inner Picasso with mess-free painting. Slip a piece of construction paper into a resealable bag, squeeze in a few drops of paint, and seal it up. Tape it to the high chair's tray and watch the masterpiece come to life.

Turn on the Water Works

The Imagination Tree

If baby's high chair has a tray with a tall lip, you have the perfect spot for baby to splish and splash. Take a cue from Chasing Cheerios and add a drop of food coloring to up the fun factor. Note: This will get messy. Put on the right bib (check out our favorite bibs for every occasion) and maybe save this idea for a warm day when you can park the high chair outside. Or a day when you'd planned to clean your floor.

Pipe Play

elizabeth weislak via Flickr

To keep baby's brain and hands active, reach for a handful of pipe cleaners and an empty water bottle (for older babies) or a wide-mouthed plastic jar (for younger ones). First, twist pipe cleaners in half to soften pointy ends. Then, show baby how to fit the cleaners into the bottle or jar and watch those motor skills grow.

Stick With It

Chasing Cheerios

For the DIY-inclined, this Velcro board is a great way to keep baby's hands busy. To make this board, the Chasing Cheerios blog advises that you sand a wooden board, then affix strips of sticky-backed Velcro to it. Cut smaller pieces of Velcro to affix to blocks or other small toys. Your little one can attach the different items to the board and explore that satisfying telltale Velcro sound when they pull them off. Velcro will also help keep the toys on the high chair tray.

Let’s face it: life in San Diego is pretty sunny and simple. But being a San Diego mom isn’t always about simplicity – just look inside our purses and diaper bags where you’ll find everything from hand wipes to Zoo passes. We peeked in a few hundred bags and came up with this list of what moms in America’s Finest City typically tote.

1. Sunblock. Living in sunny San Diego means constantly applying sunblock. We slather it on in the morning and then reapply during the day. Natural sunblock (with the least amount of chemicals) is on the minds – and in the purses – of all San Diego moms.

2. Recycled Wallet. We all know recycling is important. Little ones learn about it in school, and you BYOB (bring your own bag) to the grocery store. Every small thing helps Mother Earth. So it’s only natural your wallet is also of the recycled variety.

3. Legoland Swag. Not only do you have a season pass to Legoland permanently in your wallet, but you also have your little one’s Legoland driver’s license too.

4. Small Toys. Having crayons and toys makes the wait at the doctor’s office or on the 5 Freeway shorter and sweeter.

5. San Diego County Fair Ticket Stub. Still walking around with your San Diego County Fair ticket stub in your purse? We thought so! Wristband days, cotton candy and super slides — it’s a San Diego summer tradition.

6. Coffee Cards. Staying quick on our feet and full of energy is important when chasing little beach-goers around. Whether your frequent flyer card is the Starbucks app or Cafe Motto, we bet a Java pass is in your wallet.

7. Your Smartphone. Okay, this one isn’t just in the purses of SoCal moms. But we’d be willing to bet that one of these essential San Diego apps are on your iPhone or Android.

8. The Basics. Probably found in most mom’s handbags: instant stain remover stick, pen and pencil, baby wipes and a healthy snack.

9. Balboa Park Passport. Whether you’re a museum goer or a frequent flyer at the miniature train, the Balboa Park passport is burning a hole in most wallets.

10. Sand. You wouldn’t be in San Diego if the beach wasn’t somewhere in your purse. That San Diego sand seems to make its way into our cars, houses and, yes our totes, too!

What are the must-haves in your tote? Tell us in the Comments below!

Our writers are always on the go—with tots in tow. They bring you the best in kid activities and are always on the look out for the next great family adventure. Take a peek to see what they were up to with their own families this summer, and get a glimpse into what goes on when they are away from their desks.

Maria Pinkelton
This summer Maria Pinkelton had a blast vacationing and stay-cationing with her husband and their three year-old son Aaron. Between hanging out on Hilton Head Island and taking walks to nearby Decatur Square; many memories were made and many popsicles were consumed. Click here to learn about several attractions they visited during their South Carolina island getaway.

Shelley Massey
This spring, Massey was torn between staying local, waiting for newborn Baby Thomas to start sleeping through the night sometime around football season—or, instead set the summer of 2014 on fire with Ford (5) and Ella (3), baby in tow. Did you feel the burn? Because they did. A trip to Cape San Blas kicked them off, followed in rapid succession by trips to Memphis, Nashville, and back-to-back trips to Knoxville, Tennessee. They crabbed. They fished. They explored the Lost Sea. They rocked Dollywood, and Ford learned to swim in the freezing waters of the Smoky Mountain National Park while Ella caught crawdads. They set the bar high for summers ahead, and as her busy brood careens towards fall and kindergarten, Massey can’t help but be glad she chose to blow it out. Thomas will sleep through the night soon enough. Read more about her fabulous family adventures on her blog here.

Candice Rose
Proud momma to Liam, Candice, a Red Tricycle Atlanta contributing writer, is busy enjoying the journey of life with a little one. When she’s not writing about their Atlanta adventures for Red Tricycle, she is working as a hired pen at Candice Rose Creative. This summer, Candice and her family explored both near and far. They checked out the North Georgia Mountains and splashed around the Gulf Coast, but the biggest adventure by far was a trip to South Africa. Rose thinks there is really nothing quite like seeing this big and beautiful world through the eyes of a child!

Allyson Wells Chapman
Chapman and her boys’ summer vacay was a mix of travel and exploring local gems.  Chapman kicked off their summer tour in Ormond Beach, Florida. This multi-tasking mama and her brood then took a road trip up to the Chicago area and stopped at a friend’s farm, where they encountered a four-day-old calf.  There were miles of wide open spaces and other animals to chase, which was a kid’s dream. Other stops included Metropolis, the home of Superman, and Ashton’s first baseball game at Wrigley Field.  The big fun was spent at the water park in Wisconsin Dells. There were loads of little slides just the right size for little tots. Holden wasn’t big enough, but he enjoyed floating around the lazy river and taking naps on mommy.  Once we were back home, we enjoyed hitting local splash pads, swimming lessons, exploring new parks and petting zoos, such as the Art Barn in Canton.  Thanks to a photography class at the beginning of the summer, Chapman was able to capture their summer of fun on camera.

Jessica Obenschain
Red Tricycle writer Jessica spent an eventful summer chasing her three year old son, Ollie, around town.  Exploring museums and playgrounds were part of their daily routine. An amazing Fourth of July featuring a parade and fireworks was a fun highlight.  Morning hikes up Kennesaw Mountain were also part of their busy itinerary.

Rachel Quartarone
Writer Rachel Quartrone spent her summer largely on our road. In June she took off for a big western adventure to visit family in Montana—and of course, Yellowstone National Park. Her boys, ages 6 and 8, had never been outside the South. It was amazing to share Old Faithful, the Grand Tetons and a summer snow storm high atop the Beartooth Mountain Pass. They visited Plains, Georgia and got to hear President Jimmy Carter teach Sunday School, rafted down the Chattahoochee in Columbus, toured an abandoned gold mine in Dahlonega, and strolled along the riverwalk in Rome. Finally, they ended the summer with a beach trip to Florida. Quartarone thinks her boys might have had a little bit too much fun this summer because they were not happy campers on the first day of school! Read more on her blog timeforgoodfood.com.

—Phebe Wahl (Who spent most of her summer chasing after her three young babes ages 5, 3 and 1. They escaped the heat in Highlands, NC some—but spent most of the season burning up Atlanta’s playground scene.)

It may be hard to believe, but summer is almost over. With the back to school rush comes a desire to fill what remains of summer with a few more fabulous outings and adventures – preferably ones that will lower your temperature during the dog days of summer.  Here are the best ways to keep cool until it’s time to head back to school.

Head to one of LA’s kid friendly beaches

There’s no better way to bask in the final days of summer vacation than to head to the shore. Let the ocean breezes cool you down and have fun chasing the tide. Walk along the pier or rent a surrey bicycle, fill it with your family and cruise down the boardwalk.

These are our picks for beachy spots to hit with kids.

While popsicle sticks may conjure up memories of summer nights chasing after the ice cream truck and chlorine-stained hair, your kids, who may or may not know the hottest spots for gelato around town, might not hold the same appreciation for these wooden sticks like you do. Show your kids the glory of the popsicle stick and the amazing creations you can make with the little wooden stems. From popsicle fish to airplanes, we’ve come up with seven cool ideas to turn those recycled sticks into cool crafts.

Fish!

Add a little imagination, some glue, glitter and a googly eye and your little one can create these awesome, sparkly popsicle fish. Make them in different colors and string them up on fishing wire. These sparkly fish make nifty wall hangers or mobiles!

Which one do you plan to make?
