From exploring tide pools to taking bird walks along the river, park ranger programs abound in SoCal

San Diego has many different kinds of park terrains, and you don’t have to be in the mountains to catch a park ranger activity. Head down to the coast at Cabrillo for park ranger walks at the lighthouse, drive up the coast to Carlsbad’s wildlife viewing with the junior rangers, move inland for a wildlife tracking hike or nature story time at Mission Trails, or go south for a guided bird walk at the Tijuana River Estuary. Each of these experiences is so different that if you did them all you’d learn something unique from each one. Oh and bonus—all except one of these are completely free.

1. Mission Trails Regional Park

One of San Diego’s park gems offers in-person ranger activities, talks, and walks. Guided nature walks will lead you by majestic coast live oaks and the Riverside Grinding Rocks. If you have children ages 2-5, then Trail Tykes is for you—it's the second and fourth Sun. and Mon. of the month and includes a story, craft, and a short walk with staff and volunteers. There are also Birding Basics classes on select Saturdays, or you can visit at nighttime for their star parties with the San Diego Astronomy Association.

Dates: Guided Nature Walks Sat., Sun. & Wed.; 9:30 a.m.
Cost: Free

2. Cabrillo National Monument

These scenic seaside park tours have the best views in all of San Diego. Gaze out across the ocean and look for migrating whales, and then turn around to watch sailboats and military ships enter the bay. Take the one-hour guided walking tour and learn what life was like living at the lighthouse. Then head over to the Visitor’s Center and ask for the Junior Ranger Badge program; this is a great way for kids to learn about the importance of this monument. Try to go during their snake encounter days or when you can climb down into the old military bunkers. On a low tide, walk down to the tide pools by the ocean and you’ll usually see a park ranger walking around giving educational insights about the sea creatures. Try a night hike experience on a full moon (by reservation only) with the ranger-led hike by moonlight.

Dates: Guided Walking Tours Sat. at 11 a.m. & 1 p.m.; Snake Meet 'N Greet Thu. at 1 p.m.
Cost: Free

3. San Dieguito River Park

Rangers lead hikes throughout the year around the lagoon, but if you want to go on your own there are many self-guided interpretive trails to learn from. The San Dieguito Lagoon Interpretive Walk is a flat four-mile out-and-back trail, so only go out so far as little feet will walk back (this is part of the eventual 55-mile long Coast-to-Crest Trail that leads out to Julian). You’ll find 20 discovery points along the way to learn about the importance of the San Dieguito River plants, animals, and Kumeyaay people who lived there. Scan the QR codes on the posts, pick up an illustrated booklet or download them ahead of time. Check their calendar online for upcoming ranger hikes and bird walks around the lagoon. Park in a legal space at the Del Mar Public Works Yard, cross over the bridge to the north side of the river, cross the street and you’ll find the park entry monument.

Dates: Bird Walks on Dec. 17, Jan. 21, Feb. 18, March 18 & April 15; 8:30 a.m.
Cost: Free

4. South Carlsbad State Beach & San Elijo State Beach

Soak up the views and fresh ocean air while the kids join the junior ranger classes. Bring some binoculars for wildlife viewing because who knows what your kids will see that day, maybe a pelican or even a migrating whale off the coast. Junior ranger classes are through the state, so kids will get a logbook to earn a stamp with rewards as they progress through different activities each week. Children will learn 12 different activity topics like geology, ecology, and safety as they play games, hike trails, observe wildlife, and make new friends. Classes are 45 minutes long and appropriate for kids ages 6 and up.

5. Tijuana River Estuary

Take a leisurely stroll down the McCoy Trail on a guided bird walk at the Tijuana River Estuary. You’ll discover why this habitat is so unique for these 370 species of migratory and endangered birds that stop here on their journey. Guided Nature Walks are every second and fourth Saturday of the month; meet at 5th Street and Iris Avenue. Guided Bird Walks are every first, second, third, and fifth Sunday; meet at the Visitor Center. No reservations are needed for either one. Bring binoculars and just show up to these free guided ranger walks.

Dates: Guided Nature Walks 2nd & 4th Sat. from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Guided Bird Walks 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 5th Sun. from 10-11 a.m.

6. San Diego Scripps Coastal Underwater Park

See the sea from a new perspective—explore the coastal tide pools with a Birch Aquarium naturalist and learn all about the sea creatures that make this their home. The San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park spans 6,000 acres of ocean bottom and tidelands, and was established back in 1929 as an academic research area. Kids will learn how important our tide pool habitats are to our local coastlines and what can be done to protect them. Birch tide pooling adventures are for guests ages 3 and older, and children ages 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Dates: Select Sat. & Sun. Jan. 7-March 19, 2023; times vary
Cost: $20-$25/person

7. Rancho Peñasquitos Adobe Preserve

Help rangers take care of the goats at Rancho Peñasquitos Adobe. Depending on what the goats need when you’re there, rangers will let kids help with feeding or grooming. Go check out the chicken coop next door, walk around the historic homestead, or use this as a starting point for your hike into the popular canyon. There is a waterfall at the end of this hike, but it’s a ways out and back so it's best for older kids and teens to make that trek. The playground is right at the entrance to this preserve with bathrooms and a sports park too. The adobe homestead was built in 1823 and is recorded as the second oldest homestead in San Diego. Tours inside are based on availability.

Dates: Volunteers usually care for goats daily between 1-2 p.m., but times can vary

Epic Airbnb Stays in Los Angeles

Fun Staycation Ideas at Socal Airbnb Rentals

There’s plenty to love about the Lincoln Park Zoo, from the fan-favorite farm outpost to its hidden bronze water fountains. Oh, and did we mention it’s free?

It’s full of creatures big and small, it has the perfect lakeside address with gobs of family activities and restaurants all around it, it’s got breathtakingly gorgeous views . . . and, it’s free. What’s not to love about Lincoln Park Zoo?

Founded in 1866, it is the fourth oldest zoo in North America and one of a just a few that don’t charge an admission fee to get an up close look at the many animals housed there. In fact, the zoo’s mission to connect people with nature—and to inspire communities to create environments where wildlife will thrive in our urbanizing worlds—is one that even the littlest of visitors can grasp. From its fan-favorite farm outpost to close encounters with penguins, there’s never a bad day to stop by.

ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS

Waddle with the penguins

Lincoln Park Zoo welcomed penguins to their crew several years ago and along with that addition came the opportunity for face-to-face Family Penguin Encounters. Enter the Pritzker Family Cove for a personal introduction to the African penguins and find out what their daily lives are like both at the zoo and on the southern African coast.

Head down to the farm

City kids get a little bit country at this rural pocket of Lincoln Park Zoo, Farm-in-the-Zoo.

The Main Barn consists of play stations designed for toddlers and young learners. You'll find a kid-sized chicken coop with newly hatched chicks that encourages that vital first connection to nature, a theater for kids to exercise their imaginations and sensory stations to promote hands-on activities. Meanwhile, the Dairy Barn is home to goats and cows and features demonstrations that teach kids about the milking process and the Livestock arena gets kids interested in caring for farm animals with pony grooming demonstrations.

ZOO-THEMED RIDES

Do the locomotion

Hop aboard the track-less Lionel Train Adventure as it chugs around a scenic loop, giving little legs a much-needed break. The Zoo collaborated with the iconic train company, Lionel, to create this 28-passenger train with piped-in engine noises and cheery music playing in the background. It's best suited for ages 2-6, but open to anyone who wants to pay $4 to take a seat.

Make it extra exciting for kids by buying a wooden train whistle in the pavilion next to the station. There is stroller parking at the station and the entire area is fenced off, so you can keep an eye on your child. Important to note: the train does not run during inclement weather.

Take a spin

You’re in for one truly wild ride when you climb aboard the Endangered Species Carousel. Rare and endangered species like frogs, ostriches, pandas, zebras, gorillas and seals, many of which you’ll find thriving in the zoo, are represented in the 48 artisan-crafted wooden animals and two chariots. Paying $4 per jockey to ride atop the exotic on this one-of-a-kind carousel helps keep a visit to Lincoln Park Zoo free year-round.

PRITZKER FAMILY CHILDREN’S ZOO

The Pritzker Family Children's Zoo introduces kids to the animals of North America, like red wolves, black bears, river otters and beavers, and provides an opportunity for you to put your feet up while they burn off energy. It's also a great spot to wait out an ill-timed drizzle courtesy of Mother Nature.

Treetop Canopy Climbing Adventure

Nearly sweeping the ceiling with a maze of sturdy ropes and tunnels, this oasis looks like something out of Swiss Family Robinson. Climbers go in one side and climb higher to the middle and back down to the other side, and the fun is figuring out which opening will lead them the way that they want to go. Stick around to see the small animal exhibits that make up the Children's Zoo.

Wild Sapling Play Forest

Tucked away in a secluded woodsy corner next to the black bear exhibit in the Children's Zoo, you'll find the Wild Sapling Play Forest. Kids can climb a log tower, burrow their way through an above-ground tunnel of metal vines and zig-zag their way around a balance beam interspersed with tree-stump platforms. They can make mud pies and use tools to dig in a large pit filled with finely grained dirt befitting a forested hideaway.

SPECIAL EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Watch zoologists at work

The Zoo hosts a few daily activities that allow visitors a closer look at the care of animals. At 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. every day, head to the Kovler Seal Pool for seal training and feeding. Over at the Regenstein Center for African Apes at 1:30 p.m. on weekdays, you can discover the surprising methods the zoo team uses to understand ape cognition and to better support great apes. All of these activities last roughly 10 minutes and run like clockwork, aside from cancellations due to animal needs or inclement weather. Other programming may happen around the zoo at various times so be on the lookout.

Get your daily greens

The Edible Gardens at Farm-in-the-Zoo is a partnership between Green City Market and Lincoln Park Zoo with a mission to give kids hands-on lessons on the origins of food. Check the website for tour opportunities, April-October, when Green City Market staff members help visitors establish a deeper connection to the resources that sustain us all—food from the Earth.

Go on a guided arboretum tour

Did you know that in 2019, the Lincoln Park Zoo received arboretum accreditation from ArbNet? Find out more by joining a guided arboretum tour from local horticulturists, who often meet at Searle Visitor Center.

HIDDEN GEMS

Walk the Nature Boardwalk

Look closely and you might just spot a giant frog . . . or native birds, fish, turtles and insects at this natural ecosystem and outdoor classroom.

Quench your thirst

Schlepping kids around the zoo can make you thirsty, so we've got a discreet option for hydrating that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Lincoln Park Zoo has a trio of sculptural drinking fountains that put the old-school drinking fountains to shame. Just west of the Kovler Lion House, you’ll find “Lion Fountain," which depicts a lion pride—an adult male, adult female and three small cubs mounted on a bronze podium where they appear to be sharing a drink with their human friends.

North of the Regenstein African Journey near Conservatory Gate is the home to “Elephant Fountain,” where a bronze mama and baby elephant wait patiently for visitors to supply them with a cool drink.

Lastly, “For the Young at Heart” at the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo features a rabbit, dear, raccoon and nut-carrying squirrel frolicking near its three spouts.

INSIDER TIPS FOR A FUN ZOO DAY

  • Go during the week if at all possible. You're there to see animals, not humans, and there are fewer people during weekdays.
  • Jockeying nap times may hamper your ability to do this, but the earlier you arrive the better. Mornings are a great time to visit because it's just as animals start their days! Just note that during these early hours, some habitats are also being cleaned, and animals always have the choice to be in a public or private area—so not all animals are guaranteed to be visible.
  • Check the zoo's website for the 411 on daily activities, like learning about seal training and polar bear care.
  • Make a list of must-dos that cater to the interests of the individuals in your group. If Timmy has a serious thing for kitties and Molly just must see the snakes, then it will benefit you to check out the online maps so you can get in the important stuff.
  • Make a note of the interactive areas. While staring at the animals is tons of fun, the kids are going to want to do something. Make sure you're mixing in the rides, the treehouse they can actually climb and other fun features.
  • Know your limits. And by that we mean, know their limits. Even the most determined child can tilt into full-scale meltdown when they're beyond exhausted, too hot or cold and too overwhelmed by the smell of the elephants. Incorporate the wisdom of Kenny Rogers into your zoo visit: "Know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run."
  • Although Lincoln Park Zoo doesn’t have set times to bring kids who need special accommodations, they do have a great resource guide. Within it, you can find tips on the best times to come and which animal houses are the quietest, have lighting that’s comforting or are all-together sensory neutral.

HOW TO SUPPORT THE ZOO

Run for the Zoo

Lincoln Park Zoo—in addition to collecting money from parking, the train and carousel—hosts several fundraisers throughout the year to keep their general admission free. One of the most popular, Run for the Zoo, is typically held in June and consists of a 10K run or 5K run/walk that's open to families and even strollers. If your sidekick doesn’t want to go the distance, she might be swayed to try the obstacle course challenge for those ages 8 and younger. Called Safari Stampede, it spurs kids to balance like a flamingo, hop like a toad, crawl like a grizzly and leap like a lion.

Become a member

Purchase a membership that guarantees you special invites to exclusive zoo events, free and reduced parking, discounts on zoo programs, and free or discounted admission to more than 100 zoos and aquariums through the reciprocal program. As a bonus, because this is a non-profit organization, a membership is a tax write-off.

Can’t decide between french toast or french fries? Orange juice or mimosas? Well, we’ve got a brunch fix for that! Whether you want to eat your oatmeal by the ocean or brave brunch in your car (really!), there are a slew of spots you and kids will love when it comes to breakfast/lunch combos. Read on to discover the best brunch spots for LA families.

Santa Monica: Huckleberry Cafe

Besides the smorgasbord of freshly-baked cakes, muffins and pastries on display inside the bakery, this popular Santa Monica breakfast spot also has a variety of lunch and breakfast items that can be enjoyed in the indoor restaurant or on the outside patio.

Brunch Menu Standouts: After noshing on whatever yummy bakery item they had to have from the bakery, there's a dedicated kids’ menu with pancakes (add blueberries or chocolate chips), bacon & eggs, organic chicken fingers, grilled cheese and an organic roasted turkey half sandwich. Gluten free and vegan items are also available.

Good to Know: Huckleberry accepts walk-ins for seating indoors and on the back patio.

Hours: Open daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for walk-in seating. Takeout and boxed lunches are also available.

Century City: The Sugar Factory

Melissa Heckscher

Ready to break your "No candy for breakfast rule?" This cavernous restaurant on the second floor of Century City's Westfield Mall will be your kids' new favorite place—and it's easy to see why. From candy-covered milkshakes to towering stacks of rainbow pancakes, Sugar Factory's over-the-top dishes will wow you even before you take a bite (it's reportedly the most Instagrammed restaurant in America).

Brunch Menu Standouts: For starters, the cake bowl-sized drinks (served non-alcoholic or otherwise) bubble and steam like witches' brews (and come with floating gummy candies kids will want to fish out with their fingers). Hungry kiddos will love the sliders, which come five to a plate; as well as the huge stack of rainbow pancakes that are served with DIY toppings like chocolate chips and gummy bears (we only needed one order of these for our family of five!). But the real stars of this place are the specialty milkshakes, which come with a layer of sweets actually stuck onto the glass thanks to a layer of chocolate that acts like glue—plus various other treats served atop and alongside (not to mention the creamy shake itself).

Good to Know: If it's a special occasion and you've got enough bellies to fill, the $99 Kong Kong Sundae comes with 24 scoops of ice cream (!!) topped with a whole can of whipped cream, walnuts, cakes, sprinkles, M&M's, 4 waffle cones, 3 unicorn lollipops, pretzels, donuts and more. It's a feast so decadent that if you order it, the dining staff will play a special song and do a flash mob-style dance all around your table. So yeah: Come hungry. And take pictures. Seating is available inside and on the patio.

Topanga Canyon: Inn of the Seventh Ray

Nestled into the side of Topanga Canyon, this farm-to-table restaurant is all about the idyllic outside ambiance. With tree canopies overhead and a stream running alongside the patio, kids will love the treehouse feel of this space while they explore the creek bed in between bites. Because this charming eatery is known as one of the most romantic spots in LA, brunch (or lunch) is the best time o take the kiddos, as evenings tend to be filled with celebrating couples.

Brunch Menu Standouts: The $39 brunch buffet (children pay $3 per every year old) will satisfy everyone with its selection of bagels, waffles, fresh fruit, eggs, salad, desserts and more. A la carte items include breakfast burritos, omelettes, grass-fed burgers and panini sandwiches.

Good to Know: To maintain proper social distancing, reservations are required so the staff knows exactly how many people to expect at any given time.

Redondo Beach: The Original Pancake House

dutch baby pancakes
Amanda L. via Yelp

If you're a  flapjack fan, this South Bay staple is the place to go. The beachy breakfast spot has every kind of pancake you can imagine—from buckwheat and buttermilk to Hawaiian and Swedish—plus egg dishes and an assortment of lunch and dinner crepes.

Brunch Menu Standouts: The house specialty is the Apple Pancake, a single large, oven-baked pancake smothered with sautéed apples and cinnamon sugar. The Dutch Baby—an oversized, thin pancake that's oven-baked and served with whipped butter, lemon and powdered sugar—is also a local favorite. Aside from that, the smorgasbord of various kinds of pancakes and crepes will make choosing just one thing next to impossible.

Good to Know: Get there at 7:30 a.m. when the restaurant opens to avoid the lines—or bring some crayons for the kids and prepare to wait 30 to 40 minutes for a table. COVID protocols: Customers are advised to leave their phone numbers at the front and wait in their cars until their names are called. Maximum seating per table is 6. QR codes are available to scan for the menu. Dining is available inside and outside.

Pasadena: The Tea Rose Garden

Forgo the usual American brunch and opt for tea time instead! For more than 20 years, the Tea Rose Garden in Old Town Pasadena has been serving up a traditional  tea time menu in a setting worthy of little princes and princesses. The room is perfectly dainty, with painted china plates laid out across the tables beneath crystal chandeliers—plus an idyllic outdoor patio for those who want to have their tea and scones outdoors.

Brunch Menu Standouts: Each tea time entree comes includes a whole three-tiered platter of yummies including tiny sandwiches (no crust, of course), finger cakes, macaroons, scones, fruits and salads—all perfect for picking and choosing. Kids will love the "Children's Afternoon Tea" entree, which comes with a tray of kid faves like peanut butter and jelly or strawberry & Nutella sandwiches plus a chocolate chip scone, fresh fruit and a cream puff. And no worries if your kids aren't fans of earl gray: kids can opt for lemonade or decaf fruit tea instead.

Good to Know: Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Walk-ins are accepted on weekdays, but reservations are highly recommended on weekends. Masks must be worn when not eating.

Santa Monica: Back on the Beach Cafe

Picture this: you're relaxing with your toes in the sand sipping a chilled glass of wine while your little ones run up and down the beach all set against the backdrop of the shimmering Pacific. Sounds like a place of fantasy right? Well, you're in luck because this restaurant actually exists and is currently open for dine-in service! With a reasonably priced food selection and a kids' menu that has all the classics (and even non-classics like veggie dogs!), Back On The Beach checks off pretty much all the boxes for fun family-friendly safe dining!

Brunch Menu Standouts: Everyone will love the Banana Nutella French Toast, but if you're looking for less-sweet items the breakfast burrito , huevos rancheros and the California omelette all get rave reviews. Lunch faves include the Impossible burger and the blackened chicken sandwich. The kids menu includes pancakes (banana, blueberry, chocolate chip or plain) chicken fingers, burgers and hot dogs (veggie dogs are also available).

Playa Del Rey: Playa Provisions

Playa Provisions via Instagram

Wedged near a busy corner where cars whiz to and from the South Bay, Playa Provisions is one of those hidden gems that draws a crowd of regulars—whether it's for its small batch ice cream bar (located inside the restaurant) or the diverse menu spearheaded by LA-based duo, Top Chef alum Brooke Williamson & husband Nick Roberts. This is the sort of "foodie-lite" place where you can dine on decadent lobster rolls or maple bacon cinnamon buns while your kids nosh happily on melt-in-your-mouth biscuits or grilled cheese sandwiches. Of course the popsicles and whirly rainbow lollipops near the front door drew all our kids' attention, too.

Brunch Menu Standouts: Regulars rave about the lobster roll, which comes with pickled mustard seed and crushed chips; the fish tacos can be served with grilled or battered fish and come in a two-taco portion that'll fill you up just enough; and the pretzel croissant sandwich is a nice spin on the traditional egg sandwich. As for the kids, the kids meal includes burgers, grilled cheese, and pasta with sauce or butter. And don't even think about leaving without getting dessert at the front counter—whether you want a freshly-made popsicle, a humongous chocolate chunk cookie, or a Playa Provisions' small batch ice cream, everything looks delicious.

Good to Know: Reservations are recommended on the weekends, when this place can get busy. Even so, the space is roomy enough that littles move around without running into the wait staff (or another table). And bring your beach bags—the beach is just next door and a perfect spot for letting littles run off all that ice cream energy (you can keep your car at the Playa Provisions lot all day for a $20 fee). COVID protocols include Plexiglass partitions between each table and socially-distanced tables. Both indoor and outdoor dining is available.

Sherman Oaks: The Car Hop at Mel's Drive-In

Mel's Drive-In

Want to get your meal delivered right to your car? We're not talking handed to you through a drive-through window, but by a car hop who will attach a tray to your car windowsill and serve your meals right there like it's 1955. The carhop service is one thing that was reintroduced at Mel's Diner because of the pandemic—but it's still going strong at the Sherman Oaks location. Sure, it might be risky to let your kids eat pancakes and eggs in the back seat of the car, but what's a few more crumbs? If you're anything like us, your kids eat in the car anyway; might as well make a meal out of it!

Brunch Menu Standouts: This is typical American diner food in all its glory, so expect all the usual yummy comfort food like grilled cheese sandwiches and thick chocolate shakes. Breakfast standbys include the Nutella French Toast, a variety of omelettes, chicken & waffles, and a plethora of pancakes (breakfast is served all day). Lunch and dinner faves include the Grilled Cheese Combination Sandwich that comes with a trio of Jack, Swiss and cheddar on sourdough; the "piled high" turkey sandwich; and the Chinese chicken salad. The burgers are also reliably good and can be served with vegetarian, beef or turkey patties.

Good to Know: If you want a traditional sit-down brunch instead of a drive-in experience, the Hollywood, West Hollywood and Santa Monica locations all have on-site dining.

West LA: Alta Adams

Alta Adams via Facebook

Upscale soul food is where its at in this West Adams spot that was named one of the "Top Fried Chicken Spots" by KCRW and a favorite black-owned business you should know (and support). Dine inside (limited capacity seating) or surrounded by greenery on the cozy back patio and enjoy Chef Keith Corbin's unique spin on traditional southern comfort food.

Brunch Menu Standouts: Weekend brunch specials include cornmeal pancakes with maple-salted caramel brown butter sauce. Also don't miss the black eyed pea fritters with bright herb sauce or the skillet fried chicken that has made this place famous. Other faves include the barbecued brisket, California gumbo with fresh market veggies, and the cornbread loaf, which is served with honey butter. For dessert, the pineapple upside-down cake gets rave reviews.

Good to Know: Dining is available inside and outdoors on the patio. An outdoor parklet will open later in May to allow for more outdoor seating.

DTLA: Manuela's

Manuela Brunch DTLA

For an epic meal that celebrates the best of SoCal produce, grains, fish and game, head to Manuela's in DTLA. The garden atmosphere makes you feel like you are on a vacation and the cocktails live up to the hype. Not to mention a rotating art gallery graces the walls so you'll get in a little bit of culture while you sip your cappuccino. Not bad for a brunch spot!

Brunch Menu Standouts: The kids will be over the moon with the beignets with apple butter jam or the french toast while your adult palette will adore the popover benedict, black bean chilaquiles or bacon and avocado on toast. Make sure to order biscuits for the table. You will not be disappointed.

Good to Know: Make a reservation in advance to avoid a long wait and hangry meltdowns from both kids and adults but if you get caught waiting, go see out the on-site garden and chicken coop.

Rancho Palos Verdes: mar'sel at Terranea

brunch mar'sel terrane
Nancy W. via Yelp

Sometimes, you just want to get away. And at Terranea, a sprawling seaside resort nestled into the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a simple lunchtime visit can put you in that vacation mindset...if only for a few hours. The upscale Mar'sel restaurant, perched near the cliffside with a spectacular ocean view, is the only restaurant at the resort with an official brunch menu (at least, for now). Dine outside on the patio or in the elegant dining room, which is open with distanced seating.

Brunch Menu Standouts: The fixed price, three-course Sun. brunch menu lets diners choose from a selection of items for each course. The first course offers pastries, steel cut oatmeal, shrimp cocktail and avocado on toast; the second course includes heartier fare like omelettes, smoked wagyu brisket, buttermilk fried chicken and waffles, and grilled skirt steak and shrimp; and, for dessert, there's a choice of vegan Meyer lemon cheesecake, gelato trio, sea salt pot de creme, or a bowl of berries. For the littles, a more streamlined kids menu lets kids choose from scrambled eggs, waffles, skirt steak fried chicken and seared fish; plus a choice between vanilla gelato and a bowl of berries for dessert.

Good to Know: It's not cheap: The brunch is $75 a person for adults and $26 for kids. That said, it's a gourmet meal that comes with a view—plus, you can spend the whole day at Terranea exploring the manicured grounds—there's a great open field where kids will love running around on the grass—as well as the seaside hiking trails (all open to the public)—so we think it's worth the splurge.

Insider Tip: If you want to avoid the $20 valet charge, you can park for free at the Trail Parking lot on Palos Verdes Boulevard north of the resort (it's about a quarter-mile hike to the restaurant from there) or on the long driveway (Terranea Way) into the resort.

Hours: Sun. 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Berriedale Farms

Berriedale holds an unusual title. It’s the only farm in the United States that is protected by both land and breed conservation. You’ll find The George Washington National Forest to the east of this little hamlet and the Highland Wildlife Management Area to the west. The farm itself is home to heritage cattle, which means these cows are on the brink of going extinct. Berriedale is a great place for kids to learn about the importance of breed diversity in our agriculture system. It’s also ideal for families that want to “get away from it all.” You won’t get cell reception here. Or have access to a television. The log cabin accommodations are rustic (but they do have electricity).

Nothing screams summer quite like watermelon, and we’ll take any excuse to add the fruit to our meals all season long. We’ve hunted down these recipes to incorporate watermelon into breakfast, lunch and dinner. Click through the slideshow below for some sweet summery inspiration.

Healthy Fruit Pizza with Watermelon Crust

Forget pepperoni pizza—wake up with a slice of delicious (and healthy!) watermelon pizza. This awesome recipe from Simple Roots Wellness uses a cream cheese frosting as the “sauce,” and kids can help top it with all their favorite fruits. Get the recipe by clicking here.

Whip up this refreshing drink from Momma Cuisine. The boba (aka black tapioca pearls) makes it a more filling treat, and the blended watermelon mix is the perfect thirst quencher. Click here to get the full recipe.

Summer Fruit Bruschetta

Nutrition à la Natalie

Fancy up your dinner table with this fun appetizer from Nutrition à la Natalie. Instead of tomatoes, the base is (you guessed it) watermelon, making an unexpectedly tasty bite. Find out how it’s made by clicking here.

Watermelon Sorbet

Beyond the Chicken Coop

Cool off by making Beyond the Chicken Coop’s super simple sorbet. It comes together in no time with watermelon, sugar, water and an ice cream machine. Click here to get the full recipe.

Beef and Watermelon Kebabs

Paleo Diet and Fitness

We love Paleo Diet and Fitness’ idea of switching out the traditional peppers or mushrooms for watermelon in these grilled kebabs. A tangy marinade is key here to set off the sweetness of the fruit. To see the recipe, click here.

Watermelon Cherry Popsicles

The Balanced Berry

Popsicles are the perfect way to make use of fresh fruit, and this recipe from The Balanced Berry is a great one. It’s super easy to tailor it to your family’s tastes, too. Find out how the pops are made by clicking here.

If you’re looking for a fun way to escape the house after the newborn fog has lifted to spend some quality time bonding with your tiny tot, look no further than the new parent and me center, Little Knights, at Camelot Kids. The program is an offshoot of the amazing Silver Lake preschool and offers unique, developmental classes for babies, toddlers and their grown-ups.

The Space
Both you and your mini will be excited when you arrive at Little Knights. This isn’t an ordinary rec room class at the Y. The colorful, bright center built behind Camelot Kids is the kind of welcoming, kid-friendly, totally fabulous environment you really just want to hang out at… like all day. In fact, the only downside to taking a class here is that they eventually end and you have to leave. Classes meet in the spacious studio, featuring a wall of sliding doors that open onto a shaded patio and playground with plenty of space to move.

The lobby has an adorable boutique where you can load up on unique toys, gifts, baby gear and (bump) wear, their own private line of maternity apparel. If you’re waiting for a class to start, then chill out in the Womb Room. This open-air, canopied space, filled with giant bean bag chairs, offers a comfortable spot to breastfeed, chit-chat with other parents after class, or just delay your exit from this awesome place.

Parent and Me Time
Little Knights offers classes designed to cover both physical and cognitive development, as well as social skills. Most importantly though, the classes are about having fun and bonding with your baby or toddler. The programs are divided by age, starting with the Incy Wincy Dragons (5 to 12 months) that incorporates music, story time and infant massage. Young toddlers can then move on to the Itty Bitty Dragons (12 to 18 months), where they’ll work on motor skills and communication through sensory activities and pretend play.

The oldest group, Discovery Dragons (18 to 36 months), helps prepare your little learner to enter preschool by focusing on building independence, establishing routine and working together in group activities. The class meets twice a week, instead of once, includes a snack time and runs an hour and 15 minutes instead of the shorter 45 minute classes in the younger levels. In addition, they also offer a variety of unique enrichment classes, for tots ages 3-36 months, that focus on one area, like art, music or language.

Fun For Grown-Ups
Kids aren’t the only ones who get to grow and learn at Little Knights. The center also offers fitness classes for parents every morning. Unlike a gym or private studio, where you have to find childcare, here you can squeeze in a workout while your little one plays just outside within view. The licensed staff will supervise kids on the outdoor patio while you workout in the studio; your toddler doesn’t even need to be enrolled in a class to attend. Besides making the separation easier on clingier kids, watching energetic toddlers run around gives you plenty of motivation to get moving. Each day of the week features a different workout class, from aerial fitness training to boxing.

A Little Something Extra
Beyond all the classes, Little Knights features some other fun activities, like a monthly family dance party and educational workshops. Shake off the stress of the week at Disco Knights, when the whole family can boogie down with a live DJ, musical instruments, kid snacks and wine and cheese for the grown-ups. Or say goodbye to your little dancing queen at Parents Day Out, where kids can stay and play, while you can spend some adult time checking out local restaurants and businesses that offer specials and discounts to Little Knight families. The center will also be hosting workshops on various topics, like prenatal care and starting solid foods.

The Details
Classes can be booked online or via the Little Knights smartphone app. Sessions run 4 weeks in length and prices start at $140 for a series and go up depending on the class. There’s plenty of parking available in the Camelot parking lot, and if your little knight is having trouble saying goodbye to all the fun in class you can transition out with a quick stop at ‪the chicken coop in the lot on the way to your car.
