These Chicago hikes are just what you and your family need to find some crisp, quality outdoor time
We’ll admit, Chicago’s chilly seasons (yes, seasons) can be tough. But, a dose of fresh air, unforgettable scenery, and a chance to spy on animals in their natural habitat is a guaranteed day of cold weather family fun. We scoured the city in search of the most popular hiking spots that’ll have you lacing up your boots, strapping an infant to your back, and exploring. These are our top trails that range from under a mile to seemingly endless, and they all make for perfect adventures now through winter.
Hikers, bikers and stroller jockeys (even cross-country skiers) can take advantage of this 2,492-acre forest preserve created by meltaways from the Wisconsin Glacier. Adventure seekers can trek as many as 11 miles of limestone and turf-covered routes via four mapped trails that include overlooks and a man-made waterfall. Fishing is offered in several old quarries scattered throughout the preserve.
North Park Nature Village, a 46-acre nature preserve, offers a big breath of fresh air in the middle of the city. The best part of this trail is that it provides a beautiful snapshot of Illinois' diverse flora and fauna, carrying hikers through wetlands, tallgrass prairie land, forests and even oak savanna. Wood ducks, geese, garden snakes, painted turtles, deer, raccoons, foxes, bullfrogs, kingfishers, crayfish, and great blue herons all call this corner of the city home.
What was once a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp is now an urban wildlife haven that plays host to a variety of animals with the original visitor center and several of the shelters still standing. Fullersburg maintains two trails manageable for families to hike or bike. A 1.3-mile interpretive trail follows Salt Creek through lowland woods and restored prairies and includes information on DuPage’s natural history. York Tavern is accessible from the paths and makes for a fun refueling detour.
No matter the age or abilities of your hiking buddies, Starved Rock is a uniquely beautiful destination that offers oodles of family fun. With just over 13 miles of well-marked trails to explore, fishing in the Illinois River and waterfalls in 14 of the 18 canyons, there’s enough to keep the family entertained for hours. Or an entire weekend if you choose to bunk at Starved Rock Lodge. The best time to experience the waterfalls is in the spring when the snow and ice melt or after a heavy rainfall. However, Starved Rock is a place that can and should be seen during all four seasons because it takes on a completely different, but equally stunning, look.
Trails once traveled by students making their way to school are now traversed by hikers looking to enjoy the three miles of woodland, prairie and wetland trails. A renovated nature center with year-round turtle pond and a children’s activity room and a 19th-century one-room schoolhouse with interactive displays are great places to rest tiny legs.
Maple Grove is the largest remaining remnant of the vast maple forest that became present-day Downers Grove and is both a rare historic forest and a valuable natural area. Categorized as a globally endangered ecosystem, this preserve has multipurpose and interpretative trails where hikers can appreciate wildflowers and hundreds of plant species, some of which are threatened or endangered. If the spectacular flora color show isn’t enough to maintain the attention of little hikers, the variety of birds and the great-horned owl will draw them into this migratory bird stopover.
Combine hiking with playtime for the kids at Morton Arboretum. Its 1,700 acres offer 16 miles of paved and wood-chipped walking paths that make for a great intro to hiking. While you're there, enjoy the temporary Human + Nature exhibit that includes 5 massive sculptures that reflect on the human connection with nature.
Just under 70 miles west of Chicago, urban sprawl gives way to 1,550 acres of rolling prairie that provides a natural haven from the daily hustle and bustle. In addition to just over eight easily-navigated miles of scenic hiking and cross-country skiing trails that weave through wooded areas, Shabbona features a 318-acre man-made fishing lake, 15-acre seasonal nesting area for migratory waterfowl and areas for picnicking and camping.
Fermilab is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory best known for high-energy particle physics research. As you traverse the 1,000 acres of restored tallgrass prairie that surrounds the tallest building, the uniquely shaped Wilson Hall, it's hard to believe that you're likely standing upon what was once the most powerful particle accelerator in the world. Hike or bike the quarter-mile-long Margaret Pearson Interpretive Trail which connects to several miles of trails through woodland, restored oak savanna and tallgrass prairie. You'll likely encounter animal life along the way: the lab's grounds are home to eastern tiger salamanders, Baltimore orioles and great spangled fritillary, large orange butterflies with black markings.
Thanks to the Wisconsin Glacier over 10,000 years ago, this beautiful playground for outdoor adventurers exists. Kettle Moraine consists of 6 units that display a variety of ecosystems with everything from lakes to bogs and rivers to swamps and activities that range from bird watching (that can be done from the comfort of a stroller) to mountain biking. There are several fire towers that can be climbed to get expansive views of the area and beaches for swimming, fishing and exploring. While the number of trails is expansive, there are quite a few half-mile trails that are home to bullfrogs and cattails.
Got a dino-lover in the home? Trek on over to Lemont, where the lush Sagawau Canyon, the only such landform in northeastern Illinois, will transport you to the days of the dinosaurs. Located in the valley of the Des Plaines River, the exposed dolomite rock the gorge is carved through is likely the reason why biodiversity rules this smaller scale canyon. The ferns, hairy rockcress and ninebark thrive in this rock-rich environment and create a backdrop that appears more Jurassic Park and less suburban Chicago. Keep your eyes on the lookout for the many canyon residents which include blue-spotted salamanders, eastern tiger salamanders, mudpuppies, map turtles, soft-shell turtles, milk snakes, green snakes, flying squirrels, minks, long-tailed weasels, beavers, gray and red foxes.
Don’t get us wrong; we adore the fall! We’re very here for the food, the fashion, and the fun! But, if you’re anything like us, as the weather changes you might be noticing that your regular skincare routine isn’t working quite as well as it was in the warmer months. Maybe your face is feeling drier, your is T-zone oilier, or redness has creeped in. Even if you’re positive you finally found the right routine, our complexions are responding to more than just products.
Everything from a dip in temps to a shake-up in humidity impacts your skin. Not only that, but weather changes impact how your usual potions and lotions perform. But there’s hope! Our list of tried-and-true, fall skincare saviors is your go-to for giving your bathroom counters a product makeover. Start the weekend off right (and be prepared for the first official day of fall!) with these face-loving faves! (PS: Your little ones’ skin is feelin’ the changes, too, so make sure to spruce up their fall skincare, too!)
While gel cleansers are usually a-okay for warm months when our skin has a little more oil production, they can be really drying once it cools off. We lean on cream or oil-based formulas this time of year, and SHISEIDO's Extra Rich Cleansing Milk has the feel of both! Starting off as a milky liquid cleanser, this Cleansing Milk whips up into a rich foam filled with rice germ oil that removes impurities without stripping your skin, and also creates a veil that protects moisture balance! We love that it rinses clean and gets your skin ready for the products that follow.
If you prefer a fragrance-free option, Nip+Fab Hyaluronic Fix Extreme4 Hydration Cleansing Cream is scentless, soothing, and hydrating. It's suitable for all skin types, but especially excellent for sensitive skin!
Dewy skin in cold weather is totally possible! Honest's Calm + Heal Melting Balm makes it happen. The formula transforms from a rich balm into a deeply moisturizing melt that heals your skin and leaves you glowing! As a bonus, you can use this balm to heal and protect minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
Even if you don't typically go for intensive moisturizer, it's often your best bet once the air starts to dry out. Bare Minerals Butter Drench Restorative Cream has a buttery texture (hence the name!) that smooths and hydrates your skin. If you'd prefer to skip heavy moisturizer during the day or under makeup, use Butter Drench as part of your night-only regimen and wake up to ultra-soft skin!
Maracuja seeds power this multitasking oil from Tarte to hydrate and renew your skin (or literally anywhere you need a little boost of moisture: hair, cuticles, heels...)! Use on top of or in place of your regular moisturizer, or mix a small amount with your foundation if you're experiencing dry patches after application. And oily-skinned friends, don't pass this by! It seems counterintuitive, but oily skin absolutely has to be moisturized, too (oftentimes, overly oily skin is the result of your body trying to overcompensate for a lack of moisture, so adding moisturizing products helps balance it out).
Targeted skincare products make choosing what'll work best for you a lot easier, and that's exactly what Bobbi Brown's Skin Moisture Solution No. 86 is! This intense serum is all about dehydrated skin and goes to work fast to relieve the uncomfortable, tight feeling associated with dry skin. It's formulated with hyaluronic acid (we're sure you're noticing a trend here!), which actually pulls moisture from the air and binds it to the skin's surface. You'll notice results from day 1!
If you've ever wondered why there are separate products for day and night, we'll fill you in: your mind isn’t the only part of you that rests when you hit the sheets. When you sleep, your skin recognizes that it's not in "protection mode" from the day. It's primed to absorb the active ingredients in the products you use before bed (and part of why you can go all day wearing makeup, but should avoid sleeping in it if you can avoid it!). Elizabeth Arden's Premiere Intense Moisture and Renewal Overnight Regeneration Cream is packed with those exact ingredients you want your skin to soak up; ceramides go to work restoring moisture while their patented retinyl complex encourages cell turnover. Every fall morning, you'll thank yourself for the extra skin TLC at night!
Generally, nighttime moisturizers are formulated to be heavier than their daytime counterparts, but Paula's Choice Nightly Reconditioning Moisturizer is lightweight and sheer, but still super effective! It's also designed to neutralize blue light and other environmental aggressors!
Even sensitive skin won't be able to get enough of Pipette's Overnight Brightening Mask! Although you might be dealing with drier skin this season, it's still important to exfoliate regularly. Instead of harsh scrubs (seriously, please don't use those), this mask uses the most gentle AHAs to exfoliate without stripping moisture or scratching up the delicate layers of skin. Use 2-3 times a week for best results (and remember to use sunscreen, like Pipette's Mineral Sunscreen, since the AHAs in this mask can make your skin a bit more sensitive to sunlight. Yes, even autumn sunlight.). Right now, save 30% off your first Pipette order with code SQUALANE30, so make sure to stock up!

The leaves aren’t the only thing changing this time of year! Your kiddos’ skin is already super sensitive and the dry, chilly weather can be ultra irritating to their delicate complexions. With so many products to choose from, we know figuring out what’ll work best can be daunting. We’ve rounded up our favorite products from Pipette that we’ve been keeping on hand so you can skip the guesswork! Did we mention that Pipette is currently offering 30% off your first order? Just use code SQUALANE30 and stock up! Reach for these goodies all season long and beyond to keep those little noses and toeses in tip-top shape.
A solid skincare routine starts with a solid foundation, and Pipette's Baby Shampoo + Wash is the first step to skin TLC! Including sugar-derived glycolipids (lipids that moisturize and aid in skin cell recovery), plant-based glycerine works to maintain soft skin, and renewable squalane (a skincare superhero all babies are born with), this Baby Shampoo + Wash is gentle enough to use daily (and gentle on the eyes!) without worrying abut overdrying. And with clean scent options like Rose + Geranium and our personal favorite, Vanilla + Ylang Ylang, as well as a Fragrance-Free formula, Pipette's Baby Shampoo + Wash will be a bathtub staple!
Not all lotions are created equal, and Pipette's Baby Lotion is top-tier. After soaping up with the Baby Shampoo + Wash, layer on the care with this lightweight blend of clean ingredients that help retain skin's moisture level and seal in the bathtime benefits. We can't get enough!
By now, we're used to making sure our kids keep their hands washed, especially in the last few years. We've also learned how fast little fingers get raw, red, and dry with repeated washing, and the fall weather can definitely irritate them even more. Enter Pipette's Hand Wash! Aloe and glycerine help attract moisture to the skin and the nontoxic and sulfate-free formula prevent that icky tight feeling. Throw in Pipette's 100% plant-derived bergamot and lemon scent for a fun zing with each wash and you'll want to make sure there's a bottle at every sink in the house!
Sometimes lotion isn't quite enough, especially in the cooler months, so make sure to scoop up Pipette's extra-rich Baby Balm! Forget greasy, petroleum-based balms; Pipette has created a velvety-soft formula that can be used anywhere and everywhere, as often as needed. TIP: Use Pipette Baby Balm on diaper lines, in those adorable skin rolls and wrinkles, knees and elbows, and wind-burned faces. Or, combine the Pipette Baby Lotion and Baby Balm together in your palm and smooth all over to super-charge your moisturizing method!
We're wild for wipes, and Pipette Baby Wipes lead the pack! Plant-based fibers and a gentle water-based formula make these a do-it-all must-have for the car, baby bags, bathrooms, and more!
Chafed, red, angry skin is never welcome, so we're making sure to include Pipette Diaper Rash Cream in our skincare arsenal. Seal out wetness and soothe irritated diaper areas with this petroleum- and lanolin-free cream that also helps to prevent future discomfort; a must for the fall!
No matter what time of year, sunscreen will always be a necessary skincare step. Pipette Mineral Sunscreen is lightweight, non-greasy, and fast-absorbing, so this ultra-important step takes no time at all and provides SPF 50 mineral, non-nano zinc oxide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection! (TIP: The non-comedogenic formula also means you can layer it over your facial moisturizer as your last step before makeup or heading out the door!)
Moisturizing is the name of the game in cold weather, and although mineral oil-based products aren't ideal, the Pipette Baby Oil formula is mineral oil-free and mimics the vernix (the first built-in moisturizer your baby is born with, courtesy of Mother Nature). It's fragrance-free and all-purpose, so keep it on-hand for massages, cradle-cap softening, body hydration, and more! (TIP: We've used Pipette Baby Oil to remove our makeup as the first step in our double-cleanse routine!)

Several years ago, I broke down crying in Walgreens while buying diapers. I wanted a second baby more than anything, but I couldn’t get pregnant. I was there to buy adult diapers for my father-in-law, Frank, who has Parkinson’s and dementia and had just moved down the block from us.
After living their entire lives in San Diego, CA, my in-laws (unbelievably) relocated to Queens, New York. I couldn’t imagine how they made the leap to cold weather and an NYC-sized apartment—but they did it for their five-year-old granddaughter, Stella. My mother-in-law, Genevieve, has more energy than anyone I know and was eager to play spy games, bake and do arts and crafts. “I’ll babysit as much as you need,” she said. “And if you have a second one, I’ll watch him every day so you won’t need daycare.”
It sounded dreamy but improbable. How would my mother-in-law manage to watch an infant while her husband’s Parkinson’s progressed? My in-laws flew across the country and moved into their new home less than a month before Frank lost full use of his legs and became bedridden. I knew he would need more and more care, and eventually, Genevieve would, too. My brother-in-law also lived in New York and was on board to help. There was no question that it was time for my family to pull together.
I loved the idea of being a true intergenerational family. But I was afraid that my partner and I wouldn’t be able to help much with caregiving as full-time working parents. Still, we learned to weave the grandparent generation into our weekend and evening routines, swinging by to drop off groceries, install lightbulbs, help out with a sponge bath.
There were nightmarish times: ER trips at 3 a.m. after my father-in-law fell out of bed. I spent many lunch breaks at work calling the Veteran’s Association, begging for a hospital bed to be delivered and for home health aide services. My stress level was so high that I feared I was hurting my chances to have a second baby at 38. I didn’t let that stop me.
“I’ll babysit for the second one—don’t you worry.” Genevieve never stopped believing.
Despite the uncertainty of Frank’s health, I felt a deep sense of calm every time I stepped into my in-laws’ building. Their apartment was right above a pizzeria, so we inhaled the warm, cheesy smell during the elevator ride. When we opened the door to the apartment, Genevieve’s golden doodle, Tilly, pounced and slathered us with kisses. Stella helped herself to Oreos from the pantry, knowing she never needed to ask permission. Then she headed into the playroom—where four dollhouses awaited.
During the first year, my partner and her brother traded off with their dad’s care, and I shouldered more of the parenting at home. Some nights my partner stayed over with her dad to care for him. Genevieve wasn’t able to babysit much, but she was still an invaluable addition to our lives as parents. I turned to her for parenting advice many times, knowing that she would never give advice unless asked and was never judgmental.
I signed up my kindergartener, Stella, for an after-school program, but Genevieve jumped in to do early pickups. Whenever Frank was having a good day, Genevieve swung by the school at 2 p.m. Together they ran around the house with walkie-talkies and spy costumes, and designed clothing using the full-sized mannequin Genevieve bought. Frank often seemed cheered up having a kid around. When Stella was nervous in the presence of someone so sick and in a hospital bed, I told her to high-five grandpa. Now they always high-five. No words need to be spoken when there is so much love.
That night when I wept in the Walgreens adult diaper aisle, I couldn’t imagine the life I’m living now. Frank has been stable enough to “graduate” from hospice services. The unstoppable Genevieve has babysat 30 hours a week for two years. She watches our long-awaited second baby, named Fiona Genevieve after her grandma. The baby happened because of modern medicine, but also all the extra support and love.
When my in-laws moved down the block, our family became stronger, more loving and complete. Baby Fiona, born on Cinco de Mayo, was the perfect latecomer to the party. And we have much to celebrate.

Newborns are wonderful at all times of year, but a winter baby comes with its own special kind of warmth. Read on for 18 reasons to appreciate your cold-weather cutie!
iStock
1. After a long night with baby, it is socially acceptable to wear pajamas 24/7 or curl up in an oversized sweater and leggings day after day after day. (And yes, we know, 2020 insured most of us were doing this anyway).
2. If baby arrives by the holidays, you’ll get to show off the best gift ever. And you have a good excuse for not cooking, cleaning or hosting.
3. No guilt for not socializing! Chilly weather, COVID and other people's colds are just two great reasons to stay in and snuggle in front of the fire.
iStock
4. You could join a pit crew with your diaper-changing speed. Can’t let that baby get chilled!
5. You’ll never "get" to host a summer-birthday pool party with a dozen short, noisy humans who think of a pool as a giant collective toilet bowl.
6. That super-attractive sweat trail from the back to the ankles that baby-wearing moms get in the summer? Yeah, you don’t have it right now.
7. You know that true happiness is curling up on the couch with a cozy blanket and warm bundle of baby, aka your own portable heat source.
8. You secretly gloat over how your feet never swelled up like giant pufferfish during the last months of your pregnancy.
9. You’re probably still wearing stretchy pants, so indulge in that yummy holiday food you only get once a year.
10. Seasonally spiced hot lattes are the order of the day (literally) when you’ve been up all night with a newborn. All those still-pregnant spring and summer mamas will be jealous you're enjoying caffeine again.

Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time to introduce my favorite toddler gardening activities! Gardening is great for kids ages 2-5 because it builds skills, gets them away from screens, and connects them with the big, wide world. Especially now, when there are fewer opportunities to get out and involved in the community, gardening can be another link in their social chain.
While it might sound exhausting to some moms, gardening with toddlers can be a lot of fun if you manage your expectations. Let’s be clear: there will be no Better Homes & Gardens cover images from your backyard. Your toddler will need to learn what they can and can’t do in the garden, and will probably make some mistakes along the way. But you’ll have something better than a pristine backyard: an occupied toddler!
Here are 7 concrete ways to get your toddler gardening that will keep them busy for at least fifteen minutes.
1. Planting
If you’re sowing plants with big seeds, call up the toddler troops. Pea, bean, squash, and sunflower seeds are the perfect sizes for little hands with limited coordination.
Start by grabbing a muffin tin and pressing it into the ground. This makes perfectly spaced indentations as a guide for your child. Have them poke one hole in each indentation (or one hole per pot if you’re gardening with containers). This will be about half the length of their pointer finger. Then they can practice putting one seed in each hole and covering it. In a few days, they’ll be rewarded with adorable green sprouts.
2. Watering
You know your kids best, so you can judge what exactly they can handle. Some toddlers might be able to use a partially filled adult-sized watering can. Others might be better suited to a toy watering can, or holding the hose with you. You can also make homemade watering cans using a milk jug with holes poked in the side. Finally, you might have a very young toddler whose best bet is a measuring cup filled and emptied over and over on some very sturdy plants.
3. Bug checks
One of the best ways to keep your garden pest-free is regularly picking bugs off your plants by hand. This is the perfect job for toddlers in the garden, especially those who love creepy-crawlies. I know my toddler just loves this job. (Well actually, she might just enjoy eating beetles.)
Teach your little one to identify good bugs like spiders, ladybugs, praying mantises. Then, learn what common bad bugs look like, including tomato hornworms, Japanese beetles, squash bugs. When you go out, bring a bucket of warm, soapy water around your garden. Every time they find one, have them drop it in the bucket.
4. Weeding
Of all the toddler gardening activities, this is the most dubious. After all, you don’t want your prized, heirloom tomato seedlings yanked up by an eager three-year-old!
I suggest only letting toddlers join your weeding team in July or later. Your veggies should be quite large by then, and the weeds are (hopefully) much smaller. Most older toddlers can follow a simple rule of “only pull the little ones.”
The other challenge with letting toddlers help weed is that they’re unlikely to have great technique. Instead of digging in and pulling weeds out by the roots, they’re likely to only yank aboveground leaves. If you’re making weeding a regular part of your daily schedule (or even just once or twice a week) this will be fine. Pulling weeds often is what prevents them from taking over.
5. Loading wheelbarrows
Sometimes, you just want to do all the weeding yourself. That’s okay, because kids can still get involved by loading up wheelbarrows. Have them follow behind you, gleefully chucking little handfuls of weeds into the wheelbarrow.
Warning: some handfuls will probably end up on you, the toddler, or other passing siblings.
6. Harvesting
Is there anything more rewarding than picking your fruits and vegetables after weeks of hard work? Get your little guys used to that joy and excitement by letting them help with the fun stuff, not just the work.
Obviously, some plants are less-suited to toddler harvesting than others. Plants that could be damaged by rough pulling are probably not a good bet for independent gathering. Toddlers should also be supervised to make sure they only pick ripe fruits.
7. Fall clean up
When the summer has passed and all that’s left of your garden is dried vines and stalks, it’s time to put your beds to bed. Toddlers are easily amused by the idea that gardens go “nighty night” for the winter and need to be tucked in, so let them help.
Have them wear those cute little gardening gloves (or snow mittens, if that’s easier) and yank up all non-perennial plants. I recommend using gloves because some common plants like squashes, cucumbers, and pumpkins, have very prickly vines.
Once everything’s out of the ground, have them help put compost on the beds. Fall is a great time to add nutrients to your garden because weeds won’t immediately grow and deplete them. Plus, the cold weather gives your compost time to fully break down and mix into the soil.
Have your little tike help you shovel 2-3 inches of fresh compost onto your beds. This job is ideal for toddlers because it requires no accuracy, serious muscles, or dexterity. If your kid can chuck their dinner off the table, they’ll do just fine with compost.
As a bonus, they get messy! (Ok, maybe that’s not a selling point…)
