Visiting these u-pick apple farms are the perfect way to welcoming in the fall season
Apple picking season has officially arrived so get ready to have bushels of fun at these beautiful apple picking farms around the San Diego area. Lucky for us, Julian, a.k.a. the West Coast hub of apple picking, is just a short drive away. From orchards with oodles of variety to ones with certified organic crops, we’ve put together a list of places that are ripe for a festive fall day out with the fam. Apple season generally runs from early September to mid-October, so check out all the juicy detailson where and when to go and if you need a reservation.
Good to Know: Be sure to check the orchard’s websites and social media before heading out since they provide the latest updates during the apple-picking season and supply availability.
Julian Farm & Orchard This 25-acre sustainable, working farm offers fun for all ages year-round, but apple picking season is one of our favorite times to visit. Julian Farm and Orchard features sprawling apple orchards and a festive u-pick experience only available by booking a reservation for one of their staff-led apple tours. Before or after the tour, your brood can enjoy the farm’s rock-climbing wall, animal sanctuary, tractor hayrides, axe throwing, craft area, and apple cider press.
Insider’s Tip:If your kiddos have any energy left after all that apple picking, stop by the Julian Mining Company just across the road for even more fun activities like mining for gems and panning for gold. Peacefield Orchard Pick from where the rumored oldest apple tree is in Julian: the “Granny Gravenstein.” You’ll find more than 200 other trees on 2.5 acres bearing dazzling Red, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonathan and Jonagold apples so you’re bound to find some super sweet pickings to take home.

Volcan Valley Apple Farm With 10 gorgeous acres to roam, Volcan Valley Apple Farm is Julian’s largest orchard. Every fall, this magical spot comes alive with over 8,000 trellis-grown apple trees filled with varieties of red and green apples including Empire, Jonathan, and Red Delicious. Purchase a bag that holds 6 – 7 lbs. of apples, then head into the fields to fill it up.

Crosscut Farm and Orchard This is a group apple-picking site that allows a minimum of 10 people per group and a maximum of 50. Make your reservations early at this family-friendly mom-and-pop operation because they’re only open for one week of apple picking. The orchard has about 700 trees to choose from including Golden Delicious, Jonathan, and Liberty apples. And while they are not certified organic, they do use “organic practices” and don’t spray their trees. An introduction to apple farming, an apple cider pressing demonstration, and parking are also included in the fee.
Apples and Art Orchards This orchard is only for large groups who are expecting to pick 20 bags of apples or more per reservation – perfect for a homeschooling group, scouts, sports teams, family gatherings, or playgroups. This all-natural, pesticide-free, non-GMO orchard is featuring many apple varieties this year, including McIntosh, Red and Golden Delicious, Williams Pride, Chehalis, Liberty, Arkansas Black, Enterprise, Hatsuke, and some heirlooms. Since they ripen at different times, not all varieties will be available during your visit. In addition to apple picking, groups receive a tour of the orchard, as well as a free apple cider-making lesson and tasting experience.

1. Go early in the season and check ahead to confirm that apples are still available for picking:Once the apples are gone, that’s it until the next year. Most orchards report updates on their socials or website.
2. Bring the right money:Some orchards only accept cash, while some only take cards. Do your research and maybe even bring both.
3. Prepare to spend more money than you would on grocery store apples:The apple-picking experience costs more than your usual trip to the produce section, but is worth the fun once a year!
4. Don’t fret about not being able to pick tons of apples: Most orchards have pre-bagged apples available for purchase if your little farmers grow weary of picking early on.
5. Don’t expect cold weather:Just because Julian is in the mountains doesn’t mean you’ll need a jacket. Check the temps before you make the trip and pack water, sun hats, sunscreen, close-toed shoes, and maybe a little bug repellant.
6. Make a day of it and experience Julian: This mining town has so many fun things to do besides apple picking. Julian is best when you allow yourself an entire day to explore.

If your little one can’t finish their chocolate, the staff here recommend taking the remainder home and popping it in the refrigerator. It will set into a zero-effort chocolate pudding by dinner time. If you can’t get enough of the hot chocolate, Christopher Elbow also sells the mixes in canisters so you can get your fix at home.
Socola’s Asian-inspired chocolates have an enthusiastic following in the Bay Area, and fans cheered when sisters Wendy and Susan Lieu finally opened a jewel box of a shop in SOMA. You can find their whole line of gourmet chocolates, from guava to earl grey to Vietnamese coffee-filled truffles, along with coffee and a killer gourmet hot chocolate. The hot chocolate is made with their 72% dark ganache and freshly steamed milk and is topped with a homemade chocolate marshmallow.
We love this Castro spot for small batch single origin heirloom chocolates and hot chocolates too. "Kokak," meaning "ribbit" in the Filipino language, stems from Founder and Head Chocolatier Carol Gancia's deep Asian roots and passion for making adventurous flavors with the rare cacao variety, "Naciónal." Your hot cocoa options include classic, hot hot chocolate (spicy drinking chocolate that harkens back to the Mayans), single province hot chocolate, and cold chocolate milk if you want yours chilled.
French truffle maker and San Francisco chocolate hero Jean-Marc Gorce makes quite the show with his fancy hot chocolate at his chocolate shop and cafe on Columbus Ave., just up the hill from North Beach Library. There you’ll find him talking truffles in his tiny, sunshine-yellow and blue storefront. His hot chocolate recipe begins with a ladle full of liquid truffle which is then whisked with hot milk on the countertop before your eyes. Decide if you want whipped cream and claim a free truffle with every drink. Peanut butter truffles are a hit with the kids but there are tons of other flavors to choose from. If the kiddos can’t finish their cup make sure you sneak the final sip to get the luxurious, rich truffle sediment.
This chocolate factory serves up three types of hot chocolate (and bites to eat that look so perfect, glazed, and petite it’s almost a shame to eat them). Take your pick from a thick, rich European drinking chocolate, a Mission blend with Mexican spices, or the Dandelion classic, lighter, and sweeter than the rest. They all come with a micro cookie on the side. Dandelion also serves Frozen Hot Chocolate, a recipe invented by the pastry chef. When they're back open for in-person dining you can pull up a seat in the cafe or better yet, snag a stool at the sidebar and watch chocolate science taking place. You’ll see vats of melted chocolate being stirred and shaken.
Hot chocolate at an ice cream parlor? Definite yes. Lush is the first store licensed to make gelato from scratch in the city of San Francisco. They feature many local purveyors in their flavors, including Cowgirl Creamery, Frog Hollow Farm, and Bellweather Farms. The house hot chocolate is made with their chocolate gelato, is served piping hot, and is wonderfully rich and smooth—just like everything else at Lush. Your child may have trouble choosing between a hot chocolate and an ice cream cone!
The gourmet chocolates in this store are so artistic they could be installed at SFMOMA. People regularly come in just to take pictures of the meticulously fashioned bon bons. Drinks are made with the same Solstice chocolate that's used to make the signature truffles. The classic hot chocolate blends 75% dark chocolate with sugar and a touch of salt and is then hand-mixed with steamed organic whole milk. There's also a Mexican blend with cinnamon and chili as well as an option to add lavender for a different taste altogether. All are rich, smooth, and silky. Afterward, snag a box of chocolates to continue the indulgence at home.
This favorite chocolate shop offers lots of options when hot cocoa cravings hit. Their classic hot chocolate is made with traditional milk chocolate with a touch of dark, or you can go for a spicy version—an intense and spicy sipping chocolate. Salted caramel combines all those great flavors and chocolate chai melts dark chocolate into their unsweetened house-brewed chai.
Timothy Adams offers the ultimate custom hot chocolate experience. Pick from nine different chocolates ranging from white to dark, from Valrhona to TCHO, combine it with milk, almond milk, or hazelnut milk, and have it served hot with homemade marshmallows or chilled over ice. Spice it up with a Mexican blend, or for parents, make it a mocha. Timothy Adams is a place for the serious chocoholic: the owners have been making chocolate for over twenty years and selling professionally for a decade.
Although this hot chocolate is only available on Saturdays and Sundays, it’s worth the wait, and the drive. The Ritz-Carlton at Half Moon Bay opens up its hot chocolate bar on its outdoor terrace at 1 p.m. on weekends. After you get your cup of dark or milk hot chocolate, embellish it with all the toppings your heart desires, from cinnamon whipped cream to caramel to chocolate crispies to mini marshmallows. Adults can add a shot of liquor as well if you need extra warming. Enjoy your hot chocolate in front of some of the most spectacular views in the Bay, then get a s’mores kit for your kids to enjoy making over the fire pits.

Cocola has locations all over the peninsula and we particularly love getting a hot chocolate from their Santana Row location and finding a sunny spot outside to sit. Grab a chocolate eclair if you're feeling especially indulgent.
Equator might be better known for its coffee but which kid can resist a hot chocolate that comes with frothy bear artwork? The dark chocolate they use comes from TCHO, a Bay Area chocolatier that works directly with cacao bean farmers and cooperatives to improve growing and drying methods. Baristas at Equator add sugar and water and mix the chocolate with soy, almond, or regular milk creating something that just hits the spot on your way to or from the beach or hiking the trails of Marin.

We found cabins, cottages, and even a converted grain bin close to Chicago to unplug and schedule time amongst the trees and alongside lakes. Make a plan for now, or plan ahead for spring to relax, unwind and say hey to Mother Nature.

This spot is a bit of a hike from Chicago, but it is so great we felt it was worth a share. Plus, a road trip might be just what you need to break up the routine. New-ish to the glamping scene, Camp Long Creek at Big Cedar Lodge invites guests to get their glamp on near Missouri's Ozark Mountains with luxury glamping tents, camp huts, and camp cabins. The definitely-not-roughing-it amenities include beach access and a pool during the summer months, a vintage airstream trailer that serves food & drinks, and a must-have s'mores kit upon arrival. They also have programming for families that include scavenger hunts and guided adventures along the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail.
This may not be a cabin, but a barn is just as fun! Barn of Three Oaks is situated between Three Oaks and New Buffalo, MI, and close to Lake Michigan, restaurants, distilleries, wineries and breweries, and boutique shopping. Oh, and stunning sunsets. Come ready for family movie nights in front of the TV that's ready to stream and game nights at the shuffleboard table. A wood-burning fireplace keeps things warm and cozy.
Sawyer, MI is located just over an hour from Chicago, a little past New Buffalo. They've recently seen an uptick in new shops and restaurants, making it a good spot to check out any time of year. This farmhouse cottage in is bikeable to local beaches, wineries, distilleries, and outdoor adventures. It's stylish and modern and looks out over 14 acres of scenic barn, pasture, and woods. It has a great setup if you want to shop for groceries to make dinner at home or there are great local dining options if you don't.
We recommend checking out Peasant's Pantry for breakfast, lunch, and take-home options, Susan's for dinner, and Infusco for a caffeine jolt.
This awesome glampsite in Buchanan, MI, is just over an hour outside of Chicago for those who need to get away from it all, and fast! With various glamping options from an authentic log cabin to major luxe-living in the cottages that include beds, bathrooms with showers, full kitchens, cable TV, and air conditioning, you can pick your family’s level of outdoorsy-ness when you book your trip. Although the log cabin doesn’t have a kitchen or bathroom like in 1835 when it was built, it’s the most popular rental onsite so grab it while you can. They take reservations up to a year in advance.
The waterpark capital of the world has 3,200 campsites (really!). Start at the KOA Wisconsin Dells which, because of its friendly, hands-on owners, makes campers feel they are being hosted at a mom-and-pop. Located just a mile or so north of downtown, you are close to the Dells action (mini golf, arcades, and more) but remote enough to bask in the company of tall trees and the winding Wisconsin River.
Onsite there is a heated pool with a splash pad, free Wi-Fi, fun-cycle rentals, a game room and nightly outdoor family movies during the summer months.
Park your camper at a long, level pull-thru with a patio and cable TV hookup; or relax on a beautiful, shaded RV site. Camping cabins and deluxe cabins are equipped with AC/heat. Visitors love the trees, immaculate restrooms with showers, and full-sized propane grills.
Door County Cabins at Plum Bottom
Chicagoans might think of Door County as a summer retreat, but don't discount this area for a winter escape. Not as many shops are open and you won't be lounging at the beach, but the much smaller crowd has its benefits. You can still enjoy many of the shops in the small towns that dot Door County, as well as many taprooms, wineries, and distilleries open for tastings. The lake views and landscape are much different in the winter months, but no less beautiful.
Door County Cabins at Plum Bottom offers three different sleeping options in Egg Harbor, a cabin, a cottage, and a treehouse. When in Egg Harbor, be sure to stop into Big Easy for fresh beignets that will make you feel like you woke up in New Orleans.
Oh, man. This place is adorable. Just over two hours away in Alvin, IL, is The Has Bin. What used to be a grain bin is now an adorable bed & breakfast with a prepared breakfast included in your stay. It's great for train lovers because there's a train that runs directly behind the bin with great views from the upper back deck. The bedroom is located in a loft with access to a beautiful deck. Bring s'mores supplies to enjoy the firepit and scenic farm.
Starved Rock is about as rocky as Illinois gets and is characterized by sandstone rock formations, 18 canyons, waterfalls, and views of the Illinois River. You'll love walking in the quiet forest, home to deer, birds, squirrels, and rabbits. Plus, tons of beautiful wildflowers bloom all around you during warmer months. One benefit of a cold-weather visit is a chance to see the thousands of Eagles that migrate yearly from Canada.
The Civilian Conservator Corps built the log cabins you'll find at Starved Rock in 1930. The knotty pine paneling and charm will take you back to simpler times, nestled under towering pines and century-old oaks.
With play equipment and character meet-and-greets—all against the backdrop of unspoiled Northern Illinois—a trip to Jellystone is more like a theme-park vacay that incidentally includes camping.
Mini golf, hayrides, arts and crafts, outdoor movies, a playground, numerous pools (including one just for kiddies), a game room, bonfires, and appearances by the furry bear character clan shouldn’t be missed.
Tent sites are available with or without electricity and less rustic cabins are available for rental. This site is open seasonally, from mid-April to mid-October, so keep it on your list for planning spring vacations.
Kick it Little House on the Prairie-style at Kinnikinnick Farm where you can glamp on a real working farm. Only an hour-and-a-half northwest of Chicago, the farm-stay program will have your kids picking eggs, feeding pigs, and milking goats. The accommodations are a cross between a log cabin and a classic tent with running water and an insulated chest that functions as a refrigerator. You’ll have to fend without electricity during your visit but with so many fun farm-centric activities, we’re guessing your kids won’t even notice.
This spot is available mid-May to mid-October and it's recommended you book early, as spots fill quickly.
Turkey Run Inn
Three hours away in Bloomingdale, IN, you'll find Turkey Run State Park. Trails wind through ravines, sandstone gorges, and exposed bedrock, accessed by an unbelievable suspension bridge. This is truly one of the Midwest's natural wonders, best seen on horseback or canoe. Flowing through the heart of the park, scenic Sugar Creek is great for beginning paddlers.
Fill your days with hiking, horseback riding and canoeing, fishing, and a swimming pool when the weather allows. You'll find campsites with electrical hookups and modern restrooms with showers. Cabins and cabin rooms are available through the Turkey Run Inn.

Bundle up in your warmest winter weather gear and head to these nearby snowy destinations with the kids
The outdoor fun doesn’t slow down when winter rolls around. Whether you’re craving a winter hike near Portland or seeking a full weekend getaway in the area, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and breathe the fresh, cold air. Fortunately, it’s just a short drive away to Mt. Hood, where families with kids of all ages can enjoy snow tubing. But if you’re looking to stay closer to home, we’ve got hot spots to go sledding near Portland, too. So, grab your tube, sled, or snow disc and get ready to slide because we’ve put together an amazing list of all of the best places to ride.
This is Portland’s favorite sledding destination and for good reason. There’s a lot to love, with specially designed tubes and well-groomed slopes. A conveyor lift makes the ride to the top of the hill almost as fun as the tube ride down. Plus, come back at night for Cosmic Tubing, where LED lights illuminate the slopes for even more downhill exhilaration.

2. Cooper Spur Resort
For a great introduction to snow tubing, head to this resort for full-service fun. With a cozy lodge and snow tubes included with your tubing ticket, the whole family can enjoy a full day of frolicking in the snow. Kids under 42” should try out the Children’s Snow Carousel, a merry-go-round that pulls children around in the snow, while taller kids can head out to the hills. When your crew is tuckered out, take a break in the lodge with a mug of hot cocoa. Be sure to leave personal sleds and snow discs behind—they aren’t allowed on the hills—and check the website for weather conditions that might temporarily close tubing lanes.
Since 1927, the Summit Pass area in Government Camp has been providing consistent, family-oriented fun for both beginners and more experienced winter-sport aficionados. Pick up an all-day pass for the dedicated tubing hill, which includes the use of a snow tube, and enjoy a full day of fun. Or, take a short drive east to Snow Bunny, which also offers tubing on weekends and holidays. It’s a little smaller than Summit so it’s a good option for younger kids. Call ahead for conditions.

4. Trillium Lake
This area provides amazing views of Mt. Hood and is known for its family-friendly recreation opportunities in the summer time. In winter, it offers steep chutes that you'll find tucked away at the end of the parking lot and makes a nice alternative to Snow Bunny (across the highway). There are enough variations in slopes to please the most beginner or advanced sledder in your crew. Please remember to check road conditions here before heading over.
With mellow slopes that are great for beginners, families who want to sled (but don't want to commit to a long drive) love this park and sledding spot south of downtown Portland on the banks of the Willamette River.
Well known in the warmer months for its skateboarding, Gabriel Park invites you to sled down the half-pipe or shred gnar on one of its many rolling hills when (or better yet, if) snow falls in the city.
Pick a spot, any spot, on this unregulated hill between Mt. Hood Meadows and Timberline, about a half mile uphill from the parking lot. It’s free and offers a variety of terrain, but be sure to choose a spot well away from the river, and watch for exposed rocks when snow is low. With beautiful views of Mt. Hood, it’s also a popular destination for snowshoeing. Get there early on snowy weekends to grab a parking spot.

8. Little John Sno-Park
A few extra miles down the road, this unregulated sledding spot is great for free, old-fashioned fun. Bring your own tube or disc (no sleds, toboggans, or skis, please), and be prepared to trek back to the top once you’ve slid down one of many hills (there’s no conveyor lift here). But that’s part of the fun, right? To make sure the good times keep rolling for your gang, be sure to read safety information posted near the play hill and consider bringing along helmets for kids.

Snow tubing & sledding tips for a successful trip:
1. Most places on the slopes require a Sno-Park Permit, available in daily, 3-day, and annual increments. Pick one up at your local DMV or at many Bi-Rite and outdoor stores.
2. Check the road conditions before you head out—Mt Hood can get snowy and stormy very fast. Pack tire chains in addition to cold weather gear, food and water, and other comforts to keep you happy on a day in the cold.
3. Also be aware that some locations require tickets and gear rental on-site (no personal equipment allowed), while other slopes just provide the snow.
Oh, the weather outside is frightful…luckily, these toddler coats make getting them ready a little less scary
First things first: the best toddler coat is the one they’ll put on and keep on. Toddlers are squirmy little creatures. They’re movers and shakers and they can’t stand being restricted.
