A 14-year-old from West Grove, Pennslyvania just solved the problem of auto blind spots––with her 8th-grade science experiment. Alaina Gassler took home the $25,000 prize at the Society for Science and the Public’s Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) science and engineering competition with her revolutionary design that could change car safety.

Gassler designed a camera that will project on to a car’s A-frame pillar, an area known to cause blind spots for drivers all too frequently. To hear how her technology works, watch the video below.

According to Gassler, “The camera is mounted on the outside of the A-pillar, records what’s behind it, sends that video feed to a projector that’s over the driver’s head and projects it onto the pillar.” The idea can not only be applied to a car’s A-pillar, but to other areas as well.

The 8th grader’s project isn’t done yet, either. Phase two involves LCD monitors that will allow the brightness to change, making the projections even more helpful during different times of the day and in unique weather conditions. Now that Gassler is $25,000 richer, those changes can now become a reality.

After Sunday’s World Championships, Simone Biles just became the most decorated gymnast in history—and her parents have a completely cute mid-competition ritual that will melt your heart.

When Biles won her 24th (and then 25th!) career medal at Stuttgart, Germany World Gymnastics Championships she did more than earn gold. The Olympian broke Vitaly Scherbo’s 23-medal 1996 record and earned herself a place in history.

Along with pretty much most of the world, the 22-year-old’s parents sat on the edges of their seats watching the world champ—but that’s not all. Ron and Nellie Biles, Simone’s biological grandparents who adopted her and younger sister Adria, reportedly shared a kiss after the gymnast sticks a routine.

The sweet smooch has become a tradition during the gymnast’s events and, judging by Biles’ new world record, means there’s plenty of love in the air!

Actor James Van Der Beek’s family is about to expand. The former Dawson’s Creek star and wife Kimberly recently announced they’re expecting a sixth child.

The Van Der Beek clan already includes Olivia, Joshua, Annabel Leah, Emilia and their soon-to-be second to the youngest, daughter Gwendolyn. This pregnancy follows three heartbreaking miscarriages for the couple.

Van Der Beek, who shared the pregnancy news on Instagram, opened up about the couple’s previous losses, writing “Miscarriage (a word that needs a replacement – nobody failed to “carry”, these things sometimes just happen) is something that people rarely talk about, and often go through in secret.” He continued, “But there needs to be zero shame around it, or around giving yourself the time and space to grieve.”

The dancing dad decided to share the first look at his baby (via ultrasound) on the reality competition show explaining, “We decided to put ourselves out there – not knowing what we’d find – in an effort to chip away at any senseless stigma around this experience and to encourage people who might be going through it to open themselves up to love & support from friends and family when they need it most. Happily, for us – this time- we walked out with tears of joy.”

Congrats to the couple and their growing brood!

As a parent these days, there’s a lot of pressure to raise your kids perfectly. In reality, of course, parenting is a lifelong endeavor in trial and error. It’s just not possible to do everything right, partially because there are no clear answers to some parenting problems. Every kid and every situation is different!

With that said, some activities are known to be almost universally beneficial to kids. Participation in team sports, for instance, can teach kids valuable life lessons and help them grow into resilient, empathetic adults. Here are 5 great lessons kids can learn from playing team sports from a young age.

1. The Value of Competition

We live in a competitive world—that’s a fact. Competition can be helpful or harmful, depending on how it’s approached. Coaches and parents who emphasize effort and enjoyment in competition over simply winning and losing can help kids reap the many benefits of competition.

Experiencing competition can teach kids to push themselves and reach new heights in their abilities, gain collaboration skills by working with their team to win, and learn constructive risk-taking and goal-setting. Kids can gain so much value out of healthy competition and may become more persistent and resilient by working toward the win together.

2. The Importance of Safety

Children often feel invincible and don’t understand that safety is important in every activity. Team sports offer a lot of health benefits, but there are certain safety risks involved with participation. The injury rate for high school youth sports is about 2.9 for every 1,000 exposures and kids of any age can become injured when playing sports.

Though there are risks, participation in team sports can also help kids learn how to prevent injury in themselves and others. They’ll learn about safety equipment, best practices for warming up and cooling down, and how to conduct themselves safely during practices and games. That knowledge can transfer over to other areas of their lives and help them to prevent injuries and accidents in a range of situations.

3. The Thrill of Winning (and, the Agony of Losing)

Life is a series of ups and downs, and kids need to learn this before they enter the high-stakes world of adulthood. By participating in team sports, children can learn the thrill of winning and the agony of losing with a support system—the other members of their team. Children on sports teams learn to lift each other up when they lose and celebrate in a healthy way when they win.

4. The Healing Power of Being Part of a Team

Children who suffer from any kind of trauma, such as adopted children who are going through a transition period and may have a troubled past, can often find comfort and emotional healing in team sports. Being part of a group can help kids feel secure, loved, and accepted, which is key for moving forward after trauma such as neglect or instability.

5. The Value of Sportsmanship

One of the best life lessons kids can learn on a sports team is how to cultivate good sportsmanship and conduct. By winning and losing together, kids can learn how to take both victory and defeat with grace. High-fiving the other team, not gloating about a big win, and learning how to avoid getting angry when things don’t go their way on the field or court are all simple but important lessons that kids will learn through participation in team sports.

Sportsmanship is all about managing one’s emotions and respecting others—key life skills that build emotional intelligence and will help kids succeed later in life.

Most people look back on their experiences in youth sports with fondness. Being part of a team and becoming close with one’s teammates is an experience that makes a huge difference in kids’ lives. Life is really all about attitude, and when kids learn to have a good attitude on a team, it will serve them well in college, the workforce, and beyond.

Parents can feel good about having their kids participate in team sports. It’s a healthy way for kids to learn, grow, and gain valuable life lessons under the guidance of their coaches, teammates, and their own mistakes and successes.

Google just revealed that Arantza Peña Popo is the 2019 Doodle for Google winner and the high school senior has dedicated her inspiring artwork to her mom.

Arantza was just three years old when she first started drawing and now her talents have earned her the winning title in this national competition, which thousands of students across the country enter each year. The person she most has to thank for her win, however, is her mom. “When I grow up, I hope to care for my mom as much as she cared for me my entire life,” Arantza wrote in the statement submitted with her artwork.

The winning doodle titled “Once you get it, give it back” was created for the contest’s annual theme, “When I grow up, I hope…” As Arantza describes it, the doodle depicts “a framed picture of my mother carrying me as a baby (a real picture in my house) and below the picture is me, caring for her when she’s older in the future.”

Arantza appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as Fallon, who was one of the contest judges, revealed the winning entry. “I wanted to make it more personal to me, so I decided to make it about my mother,” Arantza explained to Fallon. “She’s made so many sacrifices for me, so I kind of wanted to show me paying it back in the future.”

Since her submission, Arantza has graduated as valedictorian of her class and will be attending the University of Southern California with the $30,000 scholarship that she has been awarded from Google. She hopes to write and illustrate comic books and graphic novels and clearly she’s off to a notable start. Her winning doodle was chosen from over 200,000 submissions.
