During the glory days (in our opinion) of animation, you had to wait until Saturday morning to get your fill of cartoon fun. Now, tech-savvy kids have access to what seems like an unlimited number of shows, and—luckily for you—the cult-favorites are available too. From wascally wabbits to Thundercats, Ho!, here are nine classic cartoon series perfect for streaming with your little people.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

If you were a kid in the early '80s and watched the short-lived but super-popular series, then you were probably the proud owner of the entire Mattel line: He-Man, Skeletor, Man-at-Arms, Battle Cat, The Sorceress, Beast Man, Orko and more. As a parent, you can now appreciate the positive messaging that shines in every episode, while the kid inside will happily re-live all 66 episodes of good versus evil on the planet Eternia. Don’t forget to don your imaginary power sword and declare “By the power of Greyskull!”

Ages 7 & up.

Before we throw up our hand and declare all “kids these days” to be screen-addicted zombies who won’t ever move out of our houses, take a second to check out these extraordinary youths who are likely smarter than most of us adults. From a pair of super spellers from the Midwest to a toddler who has her own Mensa card to a teen who invents solar-powered computers in his spare time, these awesome kids are doing some amazing things!

Photo: Scripps Spelling Bee

A Pair of Spelling Bee C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N-S
These two battled it out at this year’s Scripp’s Spelling Bee, and proved they was as adept as sharing as they were at spelling. After dozens of rounds where even the most complex words couldn’t trip them up, the judges eventually ran out of multisyllabic challenges and declared them both winners. Vanya Shivashankar is a 13-year-old eighth grader from Olathe, Kansas. According to her bio, she plays tuba and piano and eats pizza like a true champion. Her co-winner was Gokul Venkatachalam, a 14-year-old from Chesterfield, Missouri. When he’s not spelling, he’s playing basketball or listening to favorite rap artists, Nas. Who says rap is a bad influence?

A Tenacious Toddler
This 3-year old from Phoenix is one of the youngest members of Mensa. She shocked doctors when she scored over 160 on her first IQ test. Her parents weren’t as surprised—they say she started reciting her 25-page storybooks from memory at 18 months, and was reading by age 2. She even taught herself fluent Spanish by using an app on her parent’s iPad.

An Amazing Maker
16-year-old Joey Hudy has launched marshmallows with President Obama (in a cannon on his own creation), landed a coveted internship at Intel and invented his own award-winning solar powered computer. When he’s not hanging at the White House (he was invited back in 2014 for the State of the Union Address) or speeding his way through school—Hudy is currently completing his high school math and science track at Herberger Young Scholars Academy at Arizona State University—he is making the rounds at Maker Faires around the country, where he has built celebrated creations including two LED Arduino Shields—printed circuit expansion boards—which he hopes can be used to help introduce other kids to the concept of engineering for fun.

After Ari declared his love for the zoo, Love and Lion‘s Leah went DIY on the ole’ animal theme and made her tot’s party a pop-art sensation. Decorations were bright on the chromatic scale, with plastic animals dangling from the ceiling to a feed bucket brimming with party favors. Not a single little critter left bored or hungry. Modern kid’s music is filled with many insanely talented players. Yes, of course, that’s what makes the music sound so terrific. But what you may not know is that the kindie (kid’s + indie) genre is full of hilarious people with bright, bold, bizarre and beautiful personalities.

Recess Monkey features one gentleman who can be described using all four of those ‘B’ letter adjectives. He is Jack Forman, bass player, and afternoon DJ on Sirius XM Kids Place Live (Channel 78). To celebrate his band’s new album Desert Island Disc, we wanted to see if we can get Jack shunned to his own desert island by asking the question: Who Knows Him Best? Jack’s bandmate Drew Holloway or his wife Ellen Cottrell, in this first ever Kindie Rock Cage Match!

Fingers crossed his marriage remains a happy one by the end of this story!

Each answer will receive a score of 0-5 based on its proximity to Jack’s response. We’ll tally up the score at the end and declare a winner!

As you can see, Ellen has a mighty lead as we head into the second and final round…and it’s long-form answer time! Let’s see if singer/guitarist/songwriter extraordinaire Drew Holloway can make up ground or if he’s doomed to end up with his head in the sand!

We asked Jack what his biggest rock star moment has been in his kindie rock life thus far:

Our first time playing the Getty Museum in Los Angeles in 2009, I was running back to our hotel from the gig to get something I’d forgotten. Driving back up the hill in our rental car, I randomly turned on Kids Place Live on SiriusXM and discovered that they airing one of our Rumpus Room live shows from a couple of weeks earlier when we were on tour through Washington DC… and it hit me that at that moment, I was listening to our band’s live set being aired nationally on satellite radio as I drove up this beautiful hill to a live gig that we were going to start playing in the most majestic setting to a huge audience. I felt so proud of what we had built over the years- like we’d “made it.”

Here’s how Drew and Ellen each answered this same question:

Drew: He really loves his new job as a DJ and relishes the chances to meet fans of the show out and about. Still, I’m going with our In Tents run with Seattle’s Teatro Zinanni. It was a sold out series, with plenty of tight costumes, amazing moments and he got to jump on a teeterboard wearing a fake moustache. (0)

Ellen: I think Drew probably has this one covered, but my two immediate thoughts are either the first time he was recognized “out in the wild” (at our favorite Seattle Indian restaurant, I think) or getting to perform with TONS of kindie artists at Sirius/XM studios and/or Kindiefest. (0)

Finally, we wanted to know about Jack’s most memorable Recess Monkey concert.

Definitely the Seeds of Compassion show we played in 2008 at what was then Qwest Field in Seattle. We opened for the Dalai Lama in front of 50,000 people- how do you top that!? The experience was really surreal at every step, but mostly how strange it was to play for such an enormous audience, but one that was so far away it was like watching television. We were in the end zone, playing to a completely empty field with 50,000 spectators watching in the stands. Also, his Holiness sounds a lot like Master Yoda when he laughs.

Drew: If not the Teatro Zinzanni (circus) shows then maybe our first Seattle library show where people were watching in through open windows because it was so jammed packed! (0)

Ellen: They opened for the Dalai Lama in 2008 for an audience of over 50,000 at Seattle’s Qwest Field.  It was pretty epic. (5)

There you have it! Ellen, Jack’s lovely wife, wins in a landslide 29-5! We made a marriage stronger, but have placed the future of one of kindie rock’s greatest bands in jeopardy! Oops!

Recess Monkey’s pearl of a 9th album, Desert Island Disc, is an orchestrated piece of perfection and is out now.

Tucked away, back off of busy Fremont Avenue North where Wallingford and Fremont meet, sits Pecado Bueno. You may have seen it from the street before — probably on your way to the zoo — but likely thought it was a bar, because honestly, it looked too fun to be family-friendly. Pecado Bueno is that restaurant in Seattle that every one loves, but nobody will tell you about because they want to keep it all to themselves. Sorry, friends. We’re here to break the silence on this family-friendly hotspot. While we realize that the first rule of Pecado Bueno is that you never speak of Pecado Bueno (Brad Pitt thinks we’re hilarious…), that $3 all day, everyday margarita is a total deal breaker.

$40 for Four…Without Cheaping Out
Put Pecado Bueno on the short list of places in Seattle where a family of four can dine out for under $40… and that includes margaritas! We know what you’re thinking — sure, the prices are great, but that probably means that they’re cutting corners, right? Not here. The phrase on their sign “sin well” goes beyond those $3 margaritas — Pecado Bueno is dedicated to cooking simply and with the best possible ingredients, including local seafood, organically fed and hormone-free meats and even tortillas that come from Sea-town. Leave your dining out parenting guilt at the door and just enjoy yourself. Or, order another $3 margarita.

What They Should Order
The kids’ menu is short, sweet and perfectly delicious. Our mini-food critics gave double thumbs up to the quesadilla (cheese only), which was big enough to feed two toddlers. The nachos were also a hit and were declared to be “so cheesy!” All of the kid entries are less than $5 each and include a drink from the fountain machine (we promise not to tell your kids that!). They also have Mexican sodas, which are fun for a special treat — get one to share to prevent sugar-induced Mexican hat dancing at 10:00 pm.

What You Should Order
Would one of each be a bad suggestion? Sorry, we know that doesn’t help much. Start with whatever specials they’re featuring, because they often include seasonal veggies. If those don’t grab you, the Chimichanga Dog is a popular choice (a bacon wrapped hotdog… Mexican-style), as are their tacos (chicken? carnitas? butternut squash? cod? carne asada? tiger prawns?). On the lighter side, the Mexican Chop Chop Salad (you can add chicken or steak) was perfect on the side of those “Mommy Margaritas,” as they’ve been dubbed by the regulars.

Let’s Get Festive
As soon as you walk into Pecado Bueno for the first time, you’re going to get the feeling that beyond all of that tasty food they whip up, they like to have a good time here too! And, it’s true. Often featuring live music and a hoppin’ patio area when the sunshine is sticking around, Pecado Bueno is not just a restaurant… it’s an experience. Grab a group of friends, let the kids scarf down on quesadillas until they can hardly breathe and tell the waitstaff to keep the margaritas coming. You’re going to wish it was a Pecado Bueno night every night.
