Everything You Need to Know about Staying at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa

The Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa

Let’s be real—parents usually need a vacation from their vacation after spending time away with their kids, but Renaissance Esmeralda is quickly changing that. With spacious rooms that don’t leave families feeling like they’re living on top of each other and seriously luxe beds that ensure a dreamy night’s rest—it’s a step in the right direction. Add to that, the resort’s Camp Esmeralda kids’ program that gives parents time to themselves and a zero-entry pool that allows littles to play independently in the water while you watch from a comfy lounge chair nearby. This resort is pretty much heaven on earth.

The Rooms at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa

After its multimillion-dollar design transformation in 2019, Renaissance Indian Wells, a Marriott Bonvoy property, officially re-opened as Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa—a nod to the hotel’s original name, storied legacy, and star-studded history. Among many features included in that mega makeover were the resort’s 560 beautifully decorated mid-century modern rooms, including 103 suites—all with balconies and breathtaking views of the mountains, pool, or golf course. The rooms are thoughtfully appointed with amenities to make life easier, including spacious closets (they were bigger than our closets at home), Keurig coffee makers, a mini fridge, complimentary bottled water, lush terry cloth robes, Aveda bath products, and LCD TVs that even feature Netflix (no need to enter your password here!).

Regular guest rooms have more than enough space for families of four or less, but if you prefer to level up, the one-bedroom suites are worth the extra price and deliver even more space complete with a dining table and two TVs. For larger family gatherings or extra special occasions, book the Ambassador, Executive, Governor, or even the Presidential Suites—they feature separate living and dining rooms that are ideal for entertaining and large groups or multigenerational stays.

Jump into the Desert’s Largest Swimming Pool

If there’s an award for hotel pools, Renaissance Esmeralda is winner winner chicken dinner! One of the best resort pools we’ve ever encountered, this is likely where spend much of your stay. There are three pools, a stunning waterfall, hot tubs, and plenty of lounge chairs and cabanas. Our favorite—the zero-entry pool off the resort’s sandy beach—makes you feel like you’re on a tropical island getaway. Parents can relax while keeping a watchful eye nearby as kiddos independently splash the afternoon away. The beach also features shovels and pails for some serious sandcastle building.

We reserved a private beach cabana during our stay and can’t recommend it highly enough. The cabana features a cooler stocked with bottled water, towels, plates and utensils, a sofa seating area, and four lounge chairs near the sand. The H20 Pool Bar offers walk-up service with light bites and drinks (hello, margaritas!) poolside. Or better yet, ask one of the many attentive waiters to deliver lunch directly to your lounger so you never have to move a muscle.

What to Do at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa with Kids

what to do in indian wells, CA
Jennifer O’Brien

1. Desert Glow Entertainment

One of the resort’s newest additions is Desert Glow—the ultimate gaming and lounge experience on the lobby level. Open all day, we predict your kids will want to spend a sizable amount of time here (as ours did). Filled with everything from classic arcade games, virtual reality games and air hockey to claw games, Duckpin Bowling and a Gold Rush Escape Room, it’s pretty darn impressive. You can purchase a game card on site to fill with credits for play and each game costs around 10 credits. If you need assistance during your visit, staff are readily available to answer any questions you have.

2. Camp Esmeralda

The resort’s commitment to providing entertainment for the whole family continues with Camp Esmeralda—a children’s program led by skilled and creative counselors so parents can steal some time to themselves (cue angels singing). Their dynamic activities include arts and crafts, ceramic painting, slime making, canvas coloring, sand bottle making, and much more. The program is complimentary to resort guests, and hours and availability can be found on the resort calendar.

3. Lawn Games & More

Throughout the resort, there are a plethora of fire pits where you can cozy up with a good book, a game of UNO, or a cocktail. Foosball tables, ping pong tables, and corn hole games are also located around the hotel grounds, encouraging a little friendly competition. Parents, don’t miss Spa Esmeralda, the full-service spa which offers plenty of pampering treatments. And for active families, there are tennis courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, bike rentals, outdoor yoga classes, and two 18-hole championship style golf courses at Indian Wells Golf Resort that surround the property and offer stunning mountain views. So, whether you’re taking a quick getaway or a longer respite from the world, Renaissance Esmeralda has everything you can dream of in one place. Prices vary depending on the season but tend to be less expensive during the (warmer) summer months.

Where to Eat at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa

Unlike other resorts that maybe have one or two restaurants (if you’re lucky), Renaissance Esmeralda features six wonderful dining options that offer something for everyone. The first morning of our stay, we grabbed breakfast at Café Biscotti which features a variety of tempting pastries like pain au chocolate (which we devoured), muffins, donuts, and fresh fruit. They also have a superb menu of signature coffees and other drinks to go. For dinner, we enjoyed a meal at The Place Lobby Bar with its fab selection of light bites and specialty drinks in a lively atmosphere. There’s ample seating inside, but given that it was such a lovely evening, we dined outside under the stars by the firepit.

Our last day in Indian Wells, we stopped by the incredible breakfast buffet at CAVA—the only restaurant in town to host a buffet like this seven days a week! Choosing what to eat first was the difficult part—with an omelet station, homemade pastries, fresh fruit, salmon, bacon and sausage, waffles, cereals and much more—it’s a fantastic way to please even the pickiest palates. In addition to CAVA’s usual offerings, they’re now hosting a special happy hour menu from 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. daily, as well as live entertainment.

And if that’s not enough, the resort also features Glo Sushi with a delectable selection of rolls, B&F On-Demand which conveniently delivers breakfast or dinner to your room, and H20 (mentioned above) for fantastic poolside dining. Bon appétit!

The Best Things to Do near Indian Wells with Kids

If you need help uncovering some hidden gems of things to see and do in Indian Wells, connect with Renaissance Esmeralda’s onsite “navigators” who can give you the local scoop that’s not found in any guide book. In the meantime, here are our own faves that are worth checking out:

1. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens

If you feel like having an adventure offsite for the day, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is just five miles away from Renaissance Esmeralda. Whether you want to feed giraffes, get up close and personal with wallabies, check out the new Rhino Savanna, learn about animal care at the Tennity Wildlife Hospital and Conservation Center, or stop by the crazy cool model train exhibit, The Living Desert never disappoints. After you’ve tired your little ones out, head back to the resort for a refreshing late day swim.

2. BNP Paribas Open

Every March, Indian Wells Tennis Garden hosts the highly prestigious BNP Paribas Open–the largest ATP Tour and WTP Tour combined two-week event in the world. Just two miles from Renaissance Esmeralda, the event features some of the very best players in the world. When you’re taking a break from the action on the court, the stadium offers a Tennis Paradise experience around the grounds with unrivaled amenities, live entertainment, and luxe dining and retail options. Renaissance Esmeralda is a hotel partner for the tournament and ticket/hotel packages are available when booking earlier in the season. Unfortunately, this year’s Official 2023 BNP Paribas Open hotel packages are now sold out, but a limited number of hotel nights may still be available. This year’s tournament dates are March 6-19, 2023.

3. Red Jeep Tours

Just a 20 min. drive from Renaissance Esmeralda to Metate Ranch, Red Jeep’s San Andreas Fault Jeep Tour is always a family favorite for those who love adventure. The 3-hour tour winds through a maze of geological cuts and canyons of the San Andreas Fault Zone while a naturalist guide tells stories about the area’s plants, animals, geology, seismology, and Cahuilla Indians.

4. Indian Wells Golf Resort

Located adjacent to Renaissance Esmeralda, the Indian Wells Golf Resort was named “one of the 30 best municipal golf courses in America” according to Golf Magazine. For young ones looking to up their game, private junior lessons can booked prior to your visit. Also, when available, the Troon Family Golf Program gives junior golfers one complimentary round of golf when playing with a paying adult after 3 p.m. Juniors may also rent Callaway Golf Clubs for free anytime they’re playing with a paying adult. Once the sun goes down, families should check out the club’s Shots in the Night experience. It’s fun for golfers and non-golfers alike and features Laser Putting by Netlinks and a brand new Top Tracer Driving Range. And if you work up an appetite, the famous food truck onsite serves beverages and elevated BBQ (including some kids’ menu selections).

5. Day Trip to Joshua Tree

A little over an hour’s drive from Renaissance Esmeralda, Joshua Tree National Park is the perfect day trip whether it’s your family’s first time or their 100th. Known for its incredible rock formations, adventurous hiking trails, and stunning stargazing opportunities, this national treasure is an absolute must-do when you’re so close by. Just be sure to fill up on gas before you head into the park as there aren’t any stations inside. Also, remember to download mobile maps ahead of time or stop by the visitor’s center to grab a paper one since cell service can be spotty. And, above all, pack more water than you think you’ll need (at least 1 gallon per day per person) as it’s difficult to find in the park.

Local Yokels
When local farmer’s markets shut down due to the pandemic, ag-heads Amber and Damon had a brilliant idea, and another Black-owned business in Seattle was born. They would bridge the gap by working with local farms to deliver fresh produce and other products directly to doorsteps in Seattle. Voila! Local Yokels was born. With a focus on sustainability, be it environmental or economic, families can feel good about using this service to get groceries, meats, gift baskets, self-care products, and more delivered. The next time you need a quick thing to do with the kids, head to one of the best playgrounds in Boston to get the wiggles out

Sometimes, the unpredictable New England weather isn’t such a bad thing. While we definitely get cold days that are perfect for sledding and tubing or taking the kids to an outdoor ice rink in the winter, as we get closer to spring, we also have the occasional warm days in Boston—the best times to get the kids out of the house. Thankfully there are so many great parks in Boston to visit with the family where the kids can release all that energy. We’ve gathered the 10 best playgrounds in Boston (and parks too!) that the kids will enjoy whether it’s warm or chilly outside.

1. Boston City Hall Plaza Playground

Looking for a new park in Boston? It’s a great time to take a trip to Boston City Hall Plaza, which has been renovated and reopened in November. The plaza has numerous great changes, including ramps and being more accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. The spacious area also has many places for parents to sit and nearby bathrooms are a great addition for when the little ones suddenly need to go! The playground is definitely worth checking out if you have to run to city hall for errands, it’s a nice place to sit and relax and watch the kids climb the futuristic looking play area.

5 Congress St.
Boston

2. Christopher Columbus Playground

Christopher Columbus Park is just one of those magical spots in Boston with a little something for everyone. Overlooking Boston Harbor and best known for the beautiful trellis that is the location of many engagement and wedding photos, it’s a great place to take photos of your own kiddos during the holiday season due to the amazing decorative lights. The park itself is fenced so it’s ideal for little ones who like to run. Alongside the slides and climbing areas, there is also a nice sandpit for some sensory play and a splash pad for the warmer days in Boston.

100 Atlantic Ave.
Boston

3. Carter Playground

Located in the South End of Boston, Carter Park is perfect for kids of all ages, especially those who are old enough to do sports. With its separate fields for soccer, football, baseball, and tennis, there is also a lovely playground for the little ones to explore while the bigger kids get practice in the fields. Carter Park is a short walk away from the train station and with plenty of benches, you may find the family will want to stay for hours.

709 Columbus Ave.
Boston

4. Martin’s Park

Martin’s Park is a beautiful tribute to a young victim of the Boston Marathon Bombings, and was built with inclusivity in mind. This park features some great climbing structures, such as ladders and rock climbing. There is also a wooden “marooned” ship where kids can use their imagination and have pirate adventures. Martin’s Park is especially beautiful in the spring due to the many trees and flowers which have been planted in memory of Martin Richard.

64 Sleeper St.
Boston

5. Esplanade Playground

If you like jogging near the Charles River, you may want to stop at Esplanade Playground with the kids for their daily exercise too! This park is best for kids ages 5-12, with challenging features like zip lining, climbing, and spinning. The giant jungle gym also has a tall blue slide that the kids will be lining up for again and again! This park in Boston is a sure to have the kids ready for bed by the time they get home!

6. Tadpole Playground

Boston Common is a historic site and home to one of the best places to skate in Boston, Frog Pond. But if the kids aren’t old enough to skate, the recently renovated Tadpole Playground is a great place to stop for a day of play! With its amusing little frog statues and enclosed area, this park is the perfect running ground for little ones and big kids too! During the summer months, the sprinklers stay on so families can cool off after a busy day in the city.

131 Tremont St.
Boston

7. Miriam and Sidney Stoneman Playground

Another playground located near the Charles River, the Stoneman Playground has designated play areas for toddlers and bigger kids. The toddler section has a slide, a pretend car, and small climbing obstacles, whereas the bigger kids’ section has taller obstacles, monkey bars and a firepole. This park was envisioned and revamped by parent volunteers who wanted a safe playground for local kids. We can truly see how these parents have succeeded in creating just that for all kids in Boston.

8. Mayor Thomas M. Menino Park

Boston is a community that comes together during times of both triumph and tragedy. Menino Park was created during a time when the city was in desperate need of healing and peace. This beautiful, modern park is within close proximity of Spaulding Hospital and has a great view of the waterfront. While this park is best suited for kids ages 5-12, children of all ages will enjoy the brightly colored jungle gym and swings. This park also emphasizes it’s devotion to inclusivity and accessibility for kids of all abilities.

98 16th St.
Boston

9. Hunt Almont Playground

If you’re looking for a one and done spot for everyone in the family to get their dose of exercise, then be sure to visit Hunt Almont Playground. With an outdoor fitness center for adults, a baseball field and basketball court for your sports lovers. The playground has many colorful climbing nets and foam ground that encourages safe and curious play for kids. This is also the perfect spot for a family picnic as there are many grassy areas and trees for shade. Best of all, you should plan to bring the kids here in the warmer months for some splash pad fun!

40 Almont St.
Boston

10. Auntie Kay & Uncle Frank Chin Park

The next time you visit Chinatown, make sure to stop at the Auntie Kay & Uncle Frank Chin Park. The park is surrounded by many Asian plants and there is a little stream that runs through the length of the park. The main attraction here are the vibrant cubes that make up the playground structures. Your little ones will have a blast climbing in and out of these shapes and sliding down the slide. Fun fact: this structure was a temporary exhibit but became a permanent playground due to its popularity, we can certainly see why!

A family vacation to Nickelodeon Resorts is full of pool time, character meet-and-greets, relaxation, and delicious food

The one thing we can all agree on is that a break from the reality of day-to-day is good for the soul, especially after the last few years. A visit to Nickelodeon Resort is like entering a different world where even though you know it’s not real, it feels real while you are there. Are you an adult, or has the kid inside come out to play? Who is this person excited to meet Sponge Bob and give hugs? Is that awe and glee on the face of your teen? Is your tween actually dancing in a waterpark? Yes, these rare moments of pure happiness and joy are what Nickelodeon Resorts embody. The ability to immerse into the Nickelodeon world makes the time there feel like an actual vacation—it’s the perfect escape from reality.

Claire Zlobin

Nickelodeon Resorts is a family-friendly resort chain known for its unique theme and amenities, inspired by popular Nickelodeon television shows and characters. The resorts offer a variety of activities and amenities for guests, including swimming pools, water parks, children's play areas, and live entertainment. The resorts focus on families with young children but cater to the whole family and even weddings.

If you go with little ones, you'll be happy to know the staff does not break character, even when talking to adults. The character meet and greets are goofy fun for kids of all ages, including adults. It's one of the few places teens and tweens can tap into their inner child, and parents can join in their joy as they meet some of their favorite and most loved characters. You might even be surprised to find yourself joyfully playing along and getting into the magic of the world around you.

What to Expect at Nickelodeon Resorts

Claire Zlobin

There are two properties in the Caribbean, one in Riviera Maya and one in Punta Cana. Most of the amenities are identical between the two properties, but if the beach experience will make or break your getaway, Punta Cana might be a better choice, as the beach in Cancun is not ideal due to the rebuilding of the reef along the beach. Of course, the main draw is the waterpark, where if you are traveling with kids, you'll spend most of your time.

What We Love about Nickelodeon Resorts Riviera Maya, Mexico

Denys Zlobin

You'll be pleasantly surprised with your private balcony pool overlooking the ocean since every room is an ocean-view room. There are many accommodation options to choose from, and families will be happy to know regardless of your room type, all rooms have two bathrooms and a sofa bed perfect for large families. The rooms are in a condo-style building in a private area on the beach, away from the noise of the waterpark. It's easy to get around the resort with shuttles and golf carts driven by staff and running all day continuously.

For thrills or relaxation, Aqua Nick Waterpark is the place to be.

The Aqua Nick Waterpark at Nickelodeon Resorts is THE attraction for guests of all ages. The water park includes various water-based activities and amenities, like water slides, splash pads, wave pools, and lazy rivers. The water park also has areas designated specifically for young children (or those of us who don't like the larger slides), with shallower water and more gentle water features. If you have infants, the Paw Patrol area is just perfect for them, and if you have daredevils in your group, you can test your limits at The Big Plunge, a single rider with a free-fall drop through a trap door, followed by twists and turns along a head-spinning horizontal loop. With 21 waterslides to choose from, there is something for everyone, regardless of your thrill level. You can even buddy up on some of the slides.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl1ZjNpsXcV/?hidecaption=true

Some of the amenities your family will love include:

  • Swimming: In addition to your private balcony pool, there are multiple swimming pools, water parks, and other aquatic attractions for guests to enjoy.
  • Live entertainment: The resort offers live entertainment such as shows, parades, and special events like galas and parties.
  • Character Meet & Greet: Meet your favorite characters all around the waterpark with daily meet-ups at the Character Spot. You can book a private character meet and greet at an extra cost. The 30-minute private meet and greet is yours to enjoy your way from a dance party to playing games like hide & seek, taking photos, or doing TikTok videos. It's entirely up to you.
  • SLIME! A favorite activity is getting slimed. There are daily slime sessions at the waterpark, which is a whole production with dancing and a countdown to getting slimed. You can also book your private family slime session, which is a great photo opportunity.
  • Children's play areas: There are many designated areas for children to play and have fun at the waterpark, including play structures, slides, and other interactive activities.
  • Dining and shopping: Nickelodeon Resort Riviera Maya has various dining and shopping options available for guests, including restaurants, cafes, and retail stores.
  • Spa and wellness: Náay Spa adheres to the ancient Mayan principles of balancing Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water to deliver soothing and restorative treatments featuring traditional Mayan design. The spa includes a relaxation lounge, seven treatment suites, a couples suite, a sauna and steam room, a fitness center, and a beauty salon.

When in Mexico, eat!

With six gourmet Inclusive restaurants around the hotel and Nickelodeon Place, there is something to tempt even the pickiest eater. For foodies, there are a la carte options, gourmet food displays, special event nights, and parties. Some restaurants like Piazza and the Yacht Club are popular, and reservations are recommended.

If at first glance you think the Yacht club sounds too fancy for kids, you'll be happy to know there is an adjoining children's section with its own food display catered to kids.

Good Burger is a must-visit whether you are going for the ice cream truck, a classic burger joint, or to feel like you've stepped into the world of the Good Burger show. Le Spatula is another favorite with traditional Mexican dishes like tacos, burritos, and other favorites. If you have a special occasion, speak with your concierge, and they can set up a special menu for you, and you can have a private dinner around the property. Of course, dinner on the beach with the Nickelodeon Resort twist is an all-time favorite.

Tips for making the most out of your stay:

Downloading the app is a great way to see all the offerings throughout your stay. Everything you need to plan your day is available on the app, from the restaurant menus, kids club activities, all entertainment and shows, specials, and spa services.

Whatever activities you do, the staff are great about taking photos and videos with your camera or phone. The many staff photographers always take professional pictures at the resort, and it's added to your wristband, which you can view and purchase at the gift shop in Aqua Nick Waterpark.

Club Nick is a nice air-conditioned space decked out in Nickelodeon-themed decor and filled with fun, age-appropriate activities for kids 4 to 12 years old. The kids club is open throughout the day until 4 p.m. with a break at lunch. Activities include arts and crafts, movies, character meet and greets, and more. Taking advantage of the kids club is an excellent option if you want to enjoy the slides with adults or go to the spa.

The private cabanas are a good option if you want to stay at the waterpark all day. The cabanas at the Nickelodeon Resort are private, enclosed structures throughout the resort grounds. They offer a secluded space for guests to relax and enjoy the resort amenities and include: comfortable seating and loungers, cable TV, a mini fridge, a safe, and Wi-Fi. There is even a place to charge your devices if you need. Best of all, you can order your drinks and lunch from your cabana.

Things to do nearby:

If you want to venture off the resort, a lovely spot close to the resort is Akumal Beach, a popular vacation destination located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. It's one of the few places where you can swim with turtles. Akumal Beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life. The area is home to several species of sea turtles, including green turtles, hawksbill turtles, and loggerhead turtles, which can often be seen swimming in the waters off the beach. In addition to swimming in the open water, you can also see the turtles while snorkeling or diving in the area. It is important to respect marine life and follow any guidelines or regulations to protect turtles and other marine species.

Some other fun things to do near Akumal Beach:

  1. Visit the Mayan ruins: The area surrounding Akumal Beach is home to a number of ancient Mayan ruins, including the Tulum and Coba ruins, which offer a glimpse into the history and culture of the region.
  2. Go snorkeling or diving: Akumal Beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and diving.
  3. Take a boat tour: There are several boat tour companies in the area that offer a variety of tours, including sunset cruises, snorkeling tours, and whale shark expeditions.
  4. Visit a cenote: The Yucatan Peninsula is home to some natural sinkholes called cenotes, which are filled with crystal-clear water and are popular spots for swimming and snorkeling.
  5. Explore the town of Akumal: The town of Akumal is a charming and picturesque place to explore, with many restaurants, shops, and galleries to visit.
  6. Go golfing: There are several golf courses in the area, offering a challenging and scenic way to enjoy the outdoors.

These are just a few fun things to do near Akumal Beach. The area is also home to many other attractions, including zoos, nature reserves, and cultural centers.

Nickelodeon Hotels

A few extra things to make the most out of your trip, especially with kids

  1. Keep a small travel-size amount of sunscreen in your carry-on and put it on when during the last 30 minutes of your flight. You'll feel the sun the minute you exit the airport.
  2. If you are traveling in winter, dress the kids in layers with a t-shirt and shorts under a sweater so you can easily take the sweater off to avoid that hot sticky feeling or kids getting too hot while waiting for your transfer.
  3. Before leaving home or when you arrive at the resort, download the Karisma app to get all the information for your stay.
  4. Pre-book your transfer with the resort or a reputable company like Lomas Travel; their luxury private transfers are perfect for families who prefer not to share transportation.
  5. Need some guidance to make your Nickelodeon stress free? Meet with the concierge team upon arrival and book dinner reservations to ensure you get dining times that work for your family.
  6. Bring your water shoes and plan to wear them at the waterpark.
  7. Bring at least one collared shirt if you plan to have dinner at the Yacht Club, as they have a dress code.

Editor’s note: This trip was paid for by Nickelodeon Resorts, but all the opinions belong to the writer.

Snow has finally arrived, transforming Tahoe into a wintry wonderland. It’s time to hit the road and see (and ski) the famed mountain resort

After a stifling summer with heat and smoke, we are so excited for winter at Tahoe! If your family is ready for some winter fun, we have all the tips on how to turn Tahoe into your winter wonderland playground below. For snow play and non-skiing/boarding activities, make sure to check out our sledding and tubing hill guide and either way, get ready to hit the slopes!

Where to Stay in Tahoe: The North Shore

Christine Lai

For those who prefer the north side of the lake, the Village at Northstar boasts a ton of comfy lodging options for you and the fam and most rooms come with a mini kitchen so you can cook up your own hot cocoa. Dine at the Bourbon Pub in the Village and go ice skating at the on-site rink.

Check out our insider's guide to skiing at Northstar with kids who never skied before.

For an elevated experience, check into the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe mid-mountain at Northstar. Expect five-star Ritz-Carlton service, with ski-in-ski-out convenience, plus a spa worth bribing your significant other to take the kids for a couple of hours. Two- and three-bedroom luxury residences make for an easy family retreat or upgrade your hotel room to concierge level for all those benefits.

If being close to the action is what you crave, the Village at Tahoe Palisades plunks you and the fam just steps from the gondola, lifts, shops and great restaurants of the former Olympic Village. Condos come in all sizes from studios to three-bedrooms, so there’s room for all. Bonus: many have hot tubs!

Tahoe Getaways also offers some stunning homes perfect for groups or large families, including some homes within residential community Mountainside at Northstar, which offers everything from ski butler, to a communal club house with a fitness center and heated pool, to back doors that open up right to the runs on the mountain.

Where to Stay in Tahoe: The South Shore

On the South side of the lake, there are sometimes better deals to be found, as well as some top-notch skiing. The Hotel Becket boasts gorgeous modern rooms and is located just across the street from Heavenly Village, which offers 4,800 acres of world-class skiing and snow boarding. The Landing Lake Tahoe Resort and Spa, a Destination Hotel, offers a popcorn cart, snowga (yoga in the snow!) and helicopter programming to take your visit the the sky! The all-suite Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel means extra room for families to spread out plus free breakfast (think: eggs and bacon!) is included in every stay so the family hits the slopes with full bellies.

If you’re looking to team up with another family or simply prefer more space, (plus have your own yard for snowman-building and snowball-hurling) the widest array of options are found on vrbo.com or airbnb.com.

Where to Ski in Tahoe

Christine Lai

Some of you may be itching to get the little ones up on skis for the first time. If they’re ready to go for it, most of the larger ski resorts have ski schools that are perfect for tiny beginners. Palisade Tahoe's program takes kids as young as three and these “Pioneers" learn on the flats, with about a 3-to-1 student to teacher ratio. Slightly older kids (4-6) learn with the Explorers group. Northstar-at-Tahoe’s youth ski/snowboard  program takes three-year-olds and up as well.

Insider Tip: For first-timers, most resorts recommend starting off with a half-day, to keep their little legs from getting too tired, then checking them into day care so kids can have a blast while you go big on the slopes. Check out our full  guide to kids' ski and snowboard lessons.

But if the real thrill is teaching your little shredder yourself, there are plenty of slopes perfect for learning. The Little Dipper sits right behind the Ritz-Carlton and even has it's own mini chair lift, which tends to make kids extra excited about the whole snowy endeavor. Closer to Northstar Village, there are two Kids' Adventure Parks with tiny terrain perfect for the beginner to practice on.

Where to Sled, Skate, Sleigh & Snowtube in Tahoe

Snow Play in Tahoe: This outdoor adventure wonderland is perfect for families who have more on their wish list than skiing and snowboarding. While there are great options for downhill and cross-country here, we went nuts for the snow play area. Sledding (sleds provided!), tubing and even a snowball launch make this an all-in-one winter wonderland for kids (and grownups who may have forgotten the joy of coasting down a snow-covered hill on their butts). Ample parking and one ticket lets you play all day. There are fire pits, picnic tables and a food truck serving up sandwiches, hot cocoa and more.

11509 Northwoods Blvd.
Truckee
Online: tahoedonner.com

Sledding in Tahoe: Bundled-up kids will enjoy a sleigh ride pulled by horses: there’s one at Sand Harbor Nevada State Park, a family-run outfit. Dog-sledding trips might thrill older kids who can stand to be on a husky-pulled sled for an hour. Also check out Running Creek Dog Sled Rides if you think this classic outdoors adventure is a fit for your family.

If your tot prefers to pull his own sled, there are dozens of options for sledding hills and tubing parks all around the lake. If you’re planning to ski at one of the major resorts, you’ll be glad to know that Squaw, Northstar, Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe all boast tubing parks where kids can slide in a giant doughnut for a small fee. And the smaller resorts have some pretty tricked-out sledding hills these days, too: Soda Springs lets tots as little as three take its tow ropes to the Tube Express, or, for a slower ride, the Little Dipper; Granlibakken rents saucers (no tubes or toboggans). For good, old-fashioned classic sledding, there are some hills around the lake that do it old-school: BYO sled, and best of all, no fee.

Ice Skating in Tahoe: And let’s not leave out that classic winter pastime: ice skating! The year-round rink at Northstar (roller-skating in the summer) is in the center of the village, so parents can sip a hot toddy while kids twirl away in their sightline on the ice. And the resort at Squaw Creek’s outdoor rink makes a perfect photo op, with its Sierra backdrop and hot chocolate on hand.

Where to Eat in Tahoe with Kids

Pretty much any of the restaurants within the villages at Northstar or Squaw are perfect for filling up your snow covered crew any time of day. The Michael Mina Bourbon Pub is a great option for families looking for comfort food with all the beverages to go with it. But if you are venturing out to the towns, there are lots of family-friendly places to check out.

Dine in an old train car Jax at the Trax, which serves up thick milkshakes, sweet potato fries and even whipped cream topped Irish coffees for mom and dad. This Truckee favorite is almost always bustling, but the incredibly friendly staff will make sure you feel well taken care of. The menu is multiple pages long and even offers breakfast favorites served all day. Portions are large, so maybe pick a few favorites and go family style. Their chicken fingers are the real deal (as opposed to of the suspiciously shaped McNugget variety), so order 'em up.

For some special views, the lakeside dining at Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe is surprisingly kid-friendly. Order up a Virgin Woody (the nonalcoholic version of their famous house cocktail) and soak up the scenery of that iconic lake.

For the best Frosty the Snowman pancakes in town, grab a table at Donner Lake Kitchen. It’s tucked behind the Donner Pines Market on Donner Pass Road. The service is as sweet as the M&Ms used for Frosty’s buttons, and the menu is extensive (we recommend the Bloody Marys for mom and dad). The portions are massive, but luckily they offer half sizes on the most monster-sized meals. They are only open for breakfast and lunch.

On your way in our out of town, be sure to fuel up at the Wagon Train Coffee Shop. Located in the heart of downtown Truckee, right on the strip, this place is a must visit for a taste of local flavor and fun. A model train runs on tracks suspended over the dining room and dozens of license plates and taxidermy trophy heads line the walls. The family business has been going strong for decades and their baked goods are out of this world. Just don’t try and ask what is in the biscuit’s sweet sauce—that’s proprietary. This place is a haven for thoughtful parents who want to let their partner sleep in, as they open up at 5:30 a.m. every morning and offer early bird pricing during those wee hours.

Tips for Driving to Tahoe

During the snowy season, always carry chains when driving to Tahoe (unless you are driving a four-wheel-drive with snow tires). But if you come empty handed, there are always chain services selling and installing on the side of the road, and you'll pay from $50 to $75 for the whole shebang, without ever having to get out of your car.

The year-round sunshine in San Diego gives families the ability to spend time outdoors hiking the best trails in SoCal, exploring San Diego tide pools, and even catching some waves at our kid-friendly beaches (for those brave enough to withstand cold Pacific waters) along the coast. But sometimes, it’s nice to head indoors which is why we’ve rounded up the best indoor playgrounds San Diego has to offer throughout the county. Kids of all ages will love these wonderlands with features like animal slides, giant bounce houses, and wall-to-wall trampolines.

This is the world of Teatro Piñata. In this immersive theatre installation, the caravan theatre is a portal to an expansive and surreal backstage world. Much like a piñata, what’s inside brings delight to children who crack it open. Discover a ticket booth with a secret tunnel, step up on stage and put on a show, dress up in colorful costumes in the backstage dressing rooms, play with shadow puppets, and more.

Young babies will get the thrill of possibly going down their first slide, early explorers will crawl through tunnels, and they'll be gently schooled on just how to interact with others their age.

A grocery store with a moving conveyer belt sits prominently in the middle and little shopping carts may be seen whizzing down the room's main street. Babies will gawk with wonder as their plastic ball gets sucked up by a tube and they'll eagerly watch as toddler learners watch their ball filter through wheels and various contraptions that carry them up, down, and around the wall.

There’s no denying that Oregon is filled with the most awe-inspiring sights. From lush forests to scenic rivers and waterfalls, majestic mountains and miles’ worth of glistening coastline, the Beaver state is a postcard come to life.

During the holidays, the Beaver State’s beauty is amplified thanks to festive light displays and decor and seasonal community outings. Add in an exciting itinerary for exploring and a lengthy bucket list of activities, and you’ll find your family creating new holiday traditions.

If you plan to do a road trip this winter to switch up your usual plans, we recommend making stops by the coast and high desert regions for exciting festivities—and, of course, a little bit of R&R for moms and dads. Fortunately for parents, Salishan Coastal Lodge by SCP Hotels and Soul Community Planet (SCP) Redmond Hotel offer exactly that.

Read on to discover how these two hotels make for an easy-to-plan itinerary during your holiday road trip through Pacific Northwest.

Salishan Coastal Lodge

Salishan Coastal Lodge

A road trip through Oregon isn't complete without a stop at the coast, which boasts 363 miles of shoreline. The stunning area is filled with many natural wonders that make it hard to pack up your bags when your getaway is over. Picture soaring sand dunes, a tranquil rainforest escape, jagged ocean cliffs and glistening waterfalls even the highest-quality photos can't do its beauty justice.

Now that you're wrapped up in the coast's undeniable charm, it's time to find a perfect lodge that mirrors nature's essence. Nestled in the heart of the Oregon Coastal Region, Salishan Coastal Lodge provides a well-balanced retreat for parents and kids alike. With its focus on both holistic wellness and eco-friendly experiences, families can enjoy a private hatha yoga session at The Spa at Salishan. Not only will moms and dads get a little bit of peace and quiet, but kiddos can learn soothing mindfulness tactics that they can bring back to school with them after the holiday break.

With Siletz Bay just a few miles out, parents and kiddos can also try their hand at clam digging—yes, we said it! If rustling around the sand isn’t your thing (we totally get it), spend the day paddleboarding as a group, especially once after feeling limber from yoga. Then top it off with a night at the Siletz Bay pier.

Salishan’s 200-plus acres, which neighbors evergreen forests, also provide an opportunity for year-round, outdoor activities that’ll keep the whole family entertained. If biking and hiking are more your family's speed, head to the local trails in the early hours then take an afternoon stroll on the shoreline of Gleneden Beach. Evenings by the waves call for a picnic and bonfire duo that offers not only beautiful views but lasting memories.

Let’s not forget about our golfing parents either. Salishan Golf Links touts an 18-link course whose restoration design was overseen by Oregon golf legend and PGA Tour Pro Peter Jacobsen. While Dad hits the links, youngsters can soar high up in the trees at Salishan’s on-site Aerial Park–the only of its kind on the Oregon coast. With trained aerial guides by their side, they can climb and maneuver their way through the park's 15 obstacle platforms.

To end a jam-packed day, set your sights on sunset views, with a micro-brew or handcrafted cocktail in hand, at Salishan’s The Attic. You'll actually leave feeling rejuvenated post-vacation.

Let’s get you booked today with Salishan Coastal Lodge!

Soul Community Planet (SCP) Redmond Hotel

SCP Redmond Hotel

The next stop to perfect your Oregon road trip is a stay in the state's High Deserta nickname given to the region since it sits at 4,000 feet above sea level. The area is bounded by the Blue Mountains and the Cascade Mountains, offering a sweeping landscape of towering rock pillars, rugged terrain and incredible wildlife. Fun fact: most of the High Desert was formed about 10 to 30 million years ago from a series of lava flows.

To revel in these sights, head to SCP Redmond Hotel in Central Oregon, which takes the concept of a hotel to the next level. It blends modern touches with mindfulness by offering rejuvenating wellness amenities, locally grown and sustainably-sourced goods, and minimalist suites that bring the beauty of the outdoors inside. Plus: moms and dads are greeted with a welcome glass of craft beer or kombucha upon arrival!

With easy access to Mount Baker, a popular local ski destination, parents don’t have to plan a single thing. Just be sure to wake up early each morning to enjoy a day of snow play and hitting the slopes. You can also catch sweeping views of the mountains that the family will never forget, which is the perfect photo op for next year's holiday card.

For days when parents want to slow down from the usual hustle and bustle, turn to SCP's dedicated meditation room and amenities. You'll not only get a well-deserved break but you can also carve out time for mindfulness. To take your wellness practice a step further, though, book a Peaceful Room for your stay. These rooms have everything you need to wind down while your little one naps, from essential oil diffusers to meditation pillows, sound machines and Himalayan pink salt lamps. They also provide a refreshing break from technological distraction, with no television screens or alarm clocks to disturb you while you relax and recharge during a deep night’s sleep.

A vacation isn't complete without tasting the local food. The SCP Redmond Hotel brings local flavors right to you and your family, offering four food and beverage options right inside the hotel that make planning meals a breeze. With farm-to-fork menus, creative and nutritious dishes and seasonal, organic ingredients, parents can guarantee each meal time is providing the right amount of fuel to get through the day's activities.

In the mornings, grab a fresh coffee from local roaster, Backporch Coffee to start the day off right. When the kiddos are in need of a midday pick-me-up, Provisions Market is just what they'll need. With a focus on plant-forward breakfast and lunch plates, this casual dining option is both healthy and delicious for parents and kids alike. We recommend the Heirloom Tomato Grilled Cheese or Crunchy Cashew Quinoa Salad.

Looking for dinner that’s good for you, good for the planet, (and just really, really good)? Head to Terra Kitchen, a farm-to-fork restaurant next door to the hotel lobby that provides locally grown and sustainably sourced menus highlighting Central Oregon's flavors in colorful and crave-able dishes you won’t find anywhere else. Or head to The Rooftop for stunning panoramic views of the Cascade Range (this includes the Three Sisters volcanic peaks, Mount Bachelor and Black Butte) while enjoying their locally-inspired small plate menu.

Family and community are also key to the hotel’s mission. Through SCP Redmond Hotel's Every Stay Does Good program, every guest who books a stay at the hotel plants one tree in an unnaturally deforested area, provides one adolescent with well-being tools and resources and lights the home of a family caring for a critically ill child for 24 hours. Every visit to the hotel helps create positive and meaningful change.
