The next time your family needs a digital detox, take an unplugged vacation that isn’t too far from Seattle

We all live a noisy life with plenty of distractions all wanting our attention. Sometimes it’s best to take a breather away from cell phones, computers, TVs, and video games and get back to nature while reconnecting with our families. Go back and enjoy the simple pleasures like playing card games, reading a book, napping for no good reason, and stargazing. Sure, the kids might pout at first, but they’ll find things to do in no time and will treasure these memories for years to come. But don’t take our word for it, plan an unplugged getaway in Washington this fall.

Get Away to Skagit Valley or Mount Adams

courtesy Getaway

Getaway is a unique glamping experience with Outposts located all across the U.S. Each cabin is basically a tiny home. On the outside, it’s a simple box shape with windows. Ah, but the inside is pretty great. There are one-bed cabins (one queen bed) and two-bed cabins (queen-sized bunk beds) with comfy pillows and clean sheets. (No sleeping bags needed!) Inside, the space comes with both heat and air conditioning, a kitchenette (with two-burner stove and mini fridge), a kitchen table and chairs, a hot shower and private toilet, a few good books, an old-time radio, and cell phone lockbox. Outside, you’ll find a fire pit with grill grate, two Adirondack chairs, and a picnic table. The accommodations are well planned, but keep in mind that these are cozy cabins. Fido can come too, but there is an extra charge.

There are two locations in Washington, but we can't tell you exactly where. You see, Getaway won’t reveal the actual location of your Outpost until the cabin is booked, but each is guaranteed to be a two-hour drive (or less) from its respective city. Here's what we do know. The Seattle Outpost is in Skagit Valley, and the Portland Outpost is located somewhere in Glenwood, Washington (about four hours from Seattle). Both locations are near a number of walking and hiking trails and are not too far away from activities that'll keep your crew busy and happy.

Who hasn’t dreamed of living in a treehouse? Located in White Salmon, Washington, the Klickitat Treehouse isn’t some rickety old fort. It’s a beautiful, 500-square-foot, two-bedroom home. You kids may not appreciate that it was built with a Scandinavian architecture design, but they’ll think that it’s cool nonetheless.

The living room features floor-to-ceiling windows with a view of Mount Adams, wood-burning stove, leather couch, and floor cushions. Plus who needs WiFi when you've got books and games here? Parents will appreciate the private bedroom with a queen bed and double pocket doors that open up to the living room. Kids will go crazy over the loft area with two queen beds and skylights. The house also features a full kitchen and full bathroom, but there is also a private outdoor shower too for use in the spring and summer months. It has both heating and air conditioning so you can rent it any time of year.

The wraparound deck features a propane grill, patio table, and Adirondack chairs. Down below you’ll find a fire pit and an old logging road trail that winds around the property. The treehouse is located about 20 minutes from the shops and restaurants of Hood River and the outdoor activities (biking, skiing, fishing etc.) at the Columbia River Gorge.

Lodge at the Lake

Allison Sutcliffe

Located in the Olympic National Park & Forest, Lake Quinault Lodge is the best of both worlds offering an unplugged weekend with nature while staying at a first-class resort hotel. Built in 1926, this waterfront property features 91 guestrooms with everything you’d expect to find there – except TVs. Before the kids frown, remind them that this Victorian lodge has an indoor pool. (Mom and dad will appreciate the sauna and fitness center too.) Play a favorite card game in front of the majestic fireplace in the main living room. Enjoy meals at the on-site restaurant, Roosevelt Room before heading out to do some fishing or paddleboarding on the lake. (Note: wifi is available here, but don’t tell you kids!)

In case you can’t find enough things to do at this resort, Lake Quinault Lodge is located near the Olympic National Forest, the Lake Quinault Museum, a number of walking trails and the Olympic National Park. Three mineral hot spring soaking pools offer a unique experience at Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort (although they are closed during the winter months). Boat tours are also available on Lake Quinault and Lake Crescent.

Honor a Deceptive Milestone

Deception Pass State Park is our state’s most-visited state park. This year marks the parks 100th anniversary giving you a good excuse to camp and celebrate. (Don’t have a tent? No problem. Washington State Parks has partnered with Arrive Outdoors where you can rent the gear that you need and have it delivered to your home before you go.)

The park is spread out over 3,854 acres with 172 tent sites and 134 partial hookup sites. Here you can you beachcomb along the Puget Sound beachfront and then walk only a short distance away to Cranberry Lake. Check out the Sand Dune Interpretive Trail (just 1.2 miles long) that covers a forested area, a marsh overlook and a native dune environment. If you have a little more gumption, walk up the trail to the Deception Pass Bridge or you can take your car around – we don’t judge.

The park is a great place to go geocaching during the day and s’more-making around the fire at night (not to mention ghost-story-telling!) From seagulls to squirrels (and the occasional whale or seal), chances of seeing some real wildlife is a distinct possibility. The town of Oak Harbor is just minutes away as is the Blue Fox Drive-In which is open all year round.

Wake Up to the Ocean

Located on Copalis Beach, Washington, Iron Springs Resort is close enough to Ocean Shores for a “quick drive into town” while also being far enough out to feel away from it all. Built in the 1940s (but clearly renovated since then), the resort is mishmash of both modern and rustic. There are 25 different-sized cabins on the premises that with lodging ranging from four to 10 people, and pets are allowed in most of them. Each unit is equipped with multiple bedrooms, full kitchen (with dishwasher), living room with fireplace or wood stove, and bathroom. Most have decks with barbecues and outdoor spigots and hoses to watch off Fido. And while they also have flat screen TVs with DVD players, making a 100 percent “unplugged” vacation a challenge, there’s no harm in watching a movie with popcorn before bedtime, is there?

During the day, the ocean is the star of the show which is just a short walk from your cabin. There are a number of hiking trails too. There is a general store that is stocked with just about anything you forgot back home. The beach is a good place to go fishing or clamming, and this resort offers a clam cleaning station and fire pit, as well as fishing licenses, if you need them.

Stay at a Non-Camper's Paradise

If you thought that KOA (Kampgrounds of America) was only for those with trailers and motorhomes, think again. Many locations also feature cabins to rent too. At the Pine Village KOA in Leavenworth, Washington, the campground offers a range of cabins to fit your comfort level, from the no-frills camping cabin (beds and mattresses only) to the deluxe cabins that sleep up to eight people, feature two bedrooms, full kitchens and bathrooms, decks with barbecues, and picnic tables. Where else can you camp that has a microwave and Keurig coffee maker? How about a ceiling fan and air conditioning?

As for the campground itself, it’s beautiful sitting above the river and surrounded by Evergreen trees. It features a swimming pool, hot tub, playground, snack bar, and planned activities throughout the year. Start the morning off right with crepes at the Cascade Café (open only during the summer months) before riding bikes around the campground. Take a short hike down to the river, or enjoy a day at the pool, only taking breaks to visit the Coffee Cabin for espresso, sandwiches, ice cream, or milkshakes. Make sure to leave time to visit the Bavarian town of Leavenworth which is always celebrating something including Maifest, Oktoberfest, and its Village of Lights.

Tips for a Great Trip with Kids:

1. Long drives can be less of a burden for everyone if you find something fun to do along the way. For younger ones, pack along some healthy snacks (carrot sticks, apple slices, fishy crackers, and juice boxes) handed out at different intervals. For older kids, pack a splurge treat as a surprise. Also, pack along a new coloring book or travel game. Of course, there is always the old tried and true ABC game or one of our other car game favorites.

2. If you are staying at a place that offers an outdoor fire pit, don’t forget makings for s’mores, but you can plan for dinner there too. Making hobo dinners is a fun family meal that everyone can make themselves. Create foil packets that contain a hamburger patty, chopped carrots, potatoes, and onions. Toss in some salt and pepper, fold up the edges nice and tight, and cook over hot coals.

3. Plan ahead for when the weather turns sour or boredom rears its ugly head. Pack along a jigsaw puzzle, craft supplies (like paints for the rocks found at the beach), or a brand-new card game no one in the family has played before.

Skateboarding is undeniably cool. Kids know this. You know this. If your adventurer is chomping at the bit to grind on some rails, visit one of these kid-friendly skate parks—all with something a little different to offer. Some have an area set aside for beginners so your soon-to-be shredders can learn and roll at their own pace. (P.S. We’re also sharing the best spots to take lessons.) If boarding isn’t their thing, some also allow bikes and rollerblades. Grab your helmet and protective gear and set out for a day of fun.

Where to Skateboard Outdoors

Logan Boulevard Skate Park

Logan Boulevard Skate Park, located under the Kennedy expressway in Logan Square, is somewhat sheltered for weather and every bit as cool and gritty as it sounds. All wheels are allowed, including BMX bikes, at this well-lit skater’s haven. The cool aspect of this park is the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District commissioned original art to decorate the skate park—sculptures and art made from recycled materials and chrome. Also, Haas Park is nearby, which features a playground, fitness center and spray pool.

Grant Skate Park

Don't let the huge size of Grant Skate Park and scope intimidate you. This three-acre park located at the southern end of Grand Park includes more than a dozen rails, ramps and stairs as well as straight stretches of concrete. BMX bikes and skates are also welcome. Parents can hang out in one of the viewing areas to keep an eye on their kids and enjoy the skyline views.

Indian Boundary Skate Park

Indian Boundary Skate Park is part of a larger 76-acre sports facility in Bolingbrook. This outdoor concrete skate park features half and quarter pipes, pyramids and lots of rails for grinding. The best part: beginner skateboarders can learn the ropes in a designated practice area with a small box, complete with rails and training platforms.

Central Park Skate Plaza

Bolingbrook's 2nd skate Park, Central Park Skate Plaza is significantly larger and includes ramps, ledges, banks, rails, staircases, steps, skate benches, a platform and skate boxes. It was designed to mimic an urban plaza and offers spectacular views of the popular Central Park. Bikes, boarders and bladers are all welcome.

Community Park West and Swenson Park

Glenview has two fun outdoor skate parks designed for skateboarders and inline skaters only. While both Community Park West and Swenson Park are good for all levels, Swenson park is ideal for beginners. At 7,000 sq. ft., it’s smaller and a bit easier for little kids to navigate and practice tricks. Swenson also has an in-line hockey rink. Parents can visit the nearby playground for younger siblings. Also, a big upside is the park is designed with a skatelite surface—a durable paper-composite material—instead of concrete, which makes falls a little less painful.

Frontier & Centennial Park

The Naperville Park District has 2 skate parks located at Frontier Sports Complex and Centennial Park. Frontier was renovated in 2021 and both contain several skating elements including half-pipes, quarter-pipes, boxes, rails and more. Centennial is located along the DuPage River, next to the outdoor community pool and a large park. Non-motorized skateboards, in-line skates and scooters are welcome.

Audubon Skatepark

Elk Grove Village offers both an indoor and outdoor skate option at Audobon Skatepark. It's a great place for all levels to practice tricks, ride ramps and rails and grind ledges. Be warned, the indoor park is not heated so they close if the temps drop below 10 degrees (or at staff discretion).

Wilson Skate Park

Near Montrose Beach, Wilson Skate Park is well lit and fairly small, giving your skater a chance to get their bearings without a crowd or ton of distractions. This oasis is known for its smooth transitions, large pools, ramps and grind boxes. Plus, parking is free. You’ll see a bunch of families and kids here on weekends along with some of Chicago’s famed female quad skaters.

Skate Park at Olympic Park

Schaumburg Park District's Skate Park at Olympic Park was designed to mimic elements of parking lots, street curbs and other skater-enticing areas you'd find in a cityscape. Skaters will also find staircases, benches, walls of various heights and a large concrete bowl.

Ryann Buss Zone Skate Park

Located at Knox Park in McKenry, Ryan Buss Zone Skate Park offers a variety of ramps and rails that will challenge even the most experienced skater. Helmets are required at this skate park.

Where to Skateboard Inside

Asylum Skate Park

If it’s raining outside or you just want a different experience, check out the indoor Asylum Skate Park and skate shop in Lake Bluff. BMX, inline, skateboards and scooters are welcome here. If your kids are completely new to skateboarding and need to learn the basics, Asylum offers camps and lessons that will teach them how to start, stop, drop-in, olly, ride ramps, balance and do basic tricks.

For Skateboarding Lessons

SK8 Chicago

Certified Personal Trainer and lifelong skateboarder Ben Karbin created SK8 Chicago to provide lessons to the next generation of boarders. Over the last 20 years mentoring young skaters, he's honed his ability to make aspiring skaters feel comfortable and confident to learn new tricks and techniques. SK8 offers skate lessons, clinics and camps for all levels and also builds custom ramps. They have equipment available to rent if you don't have your own and can offer advice if you'd like to make a purchase.

Little Ripper Skateboarding

Looking for a way to keep kids active during the pandemic shutdowns, Logan Square dad Enrico Hufana started Little Rippers Skateboarding. Hufana and other experienced instructors give kids ages 3-14 an introduction to boarding so they have the confidence to safely navigate all skate parks.

For more information on Chicago Park District skate parks, check out their website.

While family travel may not be as spontaneous as it used to be (was it ever?), there’s no reason you can’t pack the kids and a cooler full of bevvies in the car and head out on a low-key road trip over the long weekend. If you’re itching to spend time away from home, we’ve got nine Memorial Day road trips that will help you and the kids kick summer into high gear. Mountain resorts, seaside stays and a few lesser-known destinations thrown into the mix for good measure, mean you’ve got options. But what do all these spots have in common? They’re not too far from the city, so you can spend your time recreating instead of playing referee between kids in the car. Here’s where to spend your Memorial Day weekend.

A Hood Canal Getaway

A child enjoys the views of Hood Canal on a Memorial Day road trips
Allison Sutcliffe

If you’re looking for a road trip with options (like ferries vs. bridges and resorts vs. cabins), Hood Canal is the place to go. Located between the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas, this fab family destination will take you less than two hours to get to… if you don’t encounter road and ferry traffic. Here's your first choice for this Memorial Day road trip destination—do you wan to ferry into Kingston, Bremerton or Port Orchard to get here? Either way, you’ll be trading high-rise buildings and busy freeways for sea-creature filled tide flats and beautiful beaches. Your kiddos will think they’re in a whole new world. Everything is an adventure here, including where you eat. It doesn't get any better than oysters from the Hamma Hamma Oyster Saloon or Hook & Fork, part of the charming Union City Market. Beyond beachside eats, plan to spend the weekend hiking, fishing, exploring tidepools and, depending on the weather, enjoying water sports.

Stay at: If relaxing is what you're after, there's no better place to stay than the totally kid-friendly Alderbrook Resort & Spa. The resort recently unveiled their updated spa and has plans to open the just-renovated Restaurant at Alderbrook on May 20 (keep your fingers crossed), in time for Memorial Day. While it's an easy starting point for all your Hood Canal adventures, it's just as easy to stay on-site with the kids and take advantage of the indoor, heated, saltwater pool; abundance of lawn games; hiking trails and waterfront activities like kayaking and SUPing. But since options are they key to this weekend getaway, families can also pitch a tent at one of the nearby state parks or book a cabin so you don't have to rough-it too much.

A Getaway with Bavarian-Themed Charm

via instagram

Surrounded by beautiful mountains, Leavenworth is a small Bavarian-styled town that doesn’t skimp on its theming. Most of the architecture here is meant to look as if the buildings were plucked from Bavaria and then placed in Eastern Washington. Known for their many year-round festivals, outdoor dining options and colorful shopkeepers (many are dressed in traditional "Bavarian wear”), strolling the main drag never seems to get old, no matter how many times you've visited. Traditional food can also be found around every corner...not to mention the many ice cream and candy shops that line the streets. If all this isn’t enough to impress, Leavenworth also boasts a handful of parks, hiking trails, swimming pool, miniature golf course, arcade, a fantastic pump track and a year-round reindeer farm that's always a hit with kids. If that isn't enough for your spring getaway, you'll find plenty of fishing, biking, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, birding and zip lining here too.

Stay atSleeping Lady Mountain Resort with an on-site Aspen Leaf Day Spa, organic farm-to-table restaurant, cozy accommodations and spectacular rock pool. You also can’t beat the Enzian Inn which has fantastic indoor facilities–pool, hot tub, basketball court, ping pong room–that are great for burning off that pre-bedtime energy (please note: the outdoor pool is under construction and unavailable at this time). And at the expansive Icicle Village Resort, at the town’s western entry off Highway 2, you can choose from standard hotel rooms or three-bedroom condos, many of which have stunning views.

Good to know: The Baren Haus serves up some of the best burgers in town with homemade hamburger buns and Gustav’s is a family style pub that's been a Leavenworth favorite since 1982. Also, the Wood Shop and Hat Shop is a must-see along with the always popular Nutcracker Museum.

An Easy Island Vacation

Fay Bainbridge beach on Bainbridge Island is an easy Memorial Day road trips destination from Seattle
Allison Sutcliffe

Because a ferry ride is probably the easiest way to travel with kids (hello, upper deck exploration), Bainbridge Island is always a winning Memorial Day weekend destination. No matter where you stay, you're always close to hustle and bustle of Winslow's many shops and restaurants, KiDiMu, the weekend Farmer's Market, Scrappy Art Lab and Owen's Playground. Downtown isn't the only place worth exploring. Bloedel Reserve offers trails a plenty and you never know what you'll find along the way—a zen garden, an old mansion or a reflecting pool. You'll need timed tickets to visit this special spot. Looking for more spontaneity? You'll find it at Fay Bainbridge or Battle Point Park. Don't forget the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center so you can play like it's summer—indoors.

Stay at: When it comes to a place to stay, Bainbridge has a few family-friendly options to consider. Because hotel pools are always a hit with kids, the Quality Inn & Suites is a good spot to start. It’s pet-friendly and just down the road from Strawberry Hill Park and Winslow. If having a small kitchen (sans stove) makes your stay easier, try the Marshall Suites. For an upscale feel, check into the Inn at Pleasant Beach. Situated in the heart of Lynwood, next to beaches and dining, each suite has its own personality, and your stay includes access to the pool, complete with a kiddie wading area.

A Coast Worth Exploring

A family bikes on the Oregon coast during their Memorial Day road trips near Seattle
Sharon Mead

We know Washington is home to amazing coastal destinations, but there's something equally appealing about the beaches along the Oregon coast. Cannon Beach with it's telltale haystack rock is a tried and true choice for Seattle families (and Goonies fans from around the country), it's one of many that are worth the trip. All you need to do is head south on the 101 to find a (hopefully) quieter destination that's just a scenic and sandy. No matter where you land, these beaches are all about bike riding, kite flying, whale watching and of course, sandcastle building. So bring your sand toys, rain coats (you can count on typical PNW weather here) and sunscreen because you'll be kicking back over Memorial Day weekend watching the waves from the shore.

Stay at: Depending on where you land, a cabin with a view is in order, offering easy access to all the shore has to offer. But if a resort is more your speed, Salishan Coastal Lodge, just off the 101 should do the trick. Comfortable rooms, surrounded by nature, and a killer aerial park (don't worry, there's an indoor pool, too) are just some of the amenities you'll find there.

A Sister City Getaway

There's lots of activity along the Olympia waterfront . Find it on your Memorial Day road trips
Allison Sutcliffe

If you want to get away from the city, but you also don't, trade Seattle for Olympia as your Memorial Day road trip destination. There's lots to love about our state's capital, and the drive down is one of the perks. Olympia is just over two hours from the city, making the trek is totally doable, plus you can find lots of excuses to pull of I-5 and explore if the kids get antsy. To get your weekend off on the right foot, take the kids to the Hands On Children's Museum. With its impressive two-story slide and fascinating exhibits, your kids could play all day (hint: if you let them, they just might). And the Olympia waterfront is equally as engaging, especially on a sunny day. The Farmer's Market will be in full swing. Bring your reusable bag, appetite (there are great food stalls there) and enjoy live music as you shop. Then wander over to the waterfront where you'll find a viewing tower, playground and stroller-friendly boardwalk that goes all the way to the capitol. If rain is in the forecast, duck into Defy Olympia, the roller skating rink or catch the Alphabatastics at the Olympia Family Theater.

Stay at: Finding a cute Airbnb is always a great option when you're traveling with kids and need the comforts of home. But if you're looking to stay in the heart of Olympia where you're within walking distance of most of the city's highlights, the DoubleTree by Hilton is a great choice.

An Oasis in the Mountains

courtesy Suncadia Resort

Super easy to get to (assuming Snoqualmie Pass is traffic-free), Suncadia Resort offers a posh experience, yet is casual, kid-friendly and a bit adventurous. Set on the sunny eastern slopes of the Cascades, 80 miles east of Seattle, families visiting Suncadia for the three-day weekend can enjoy golfing, biking, hiking trails and horseback riding, as well as all the fab resort amenities including a swim and fitness center (with two splash-tastic water slides and an indoor and outdoor pool), the pool at Nelson Farm, fine and casual dining, an outdoor amphitheater and spa services. Lots of special spring activities are planned this year, including float trips, roller skate and scooter rentals, outdoor movies at Nelson Farm (hint: Goonies kicks off the season Memorial Day weekend), axe throwing and art classes the whole family will enjoy.

Bonus: While at Suncadia, be sure to check out the cute City of Rosyln (remember the TV show Northern Exposure?), the City of Cle Elum and Lake Cle Elum where you can rent boats, jet skis and more!

A Popular Locale East of the Cascades

Allison Sutcliffe

If you’re looking for drier weather and warmer temps, you’ll want to head east to Lake Chelan. Located 3.5 hours from Seattle, this family-friendly destination is surrounded by fabulous wineries, beautiful orchards and rolling hills, not to mention the crystal blue waters of Lake Chelan. Many local businesses take the winter off. So Memorial Day weekend is a great time to visit. Local favorites like Slidewaters (one of the Northwest’s largest and most popular water parks) and its sister park Lakeside Surf open that weekend, as does Ralley Alley Go-Karts and the Putting Course at Don Morse Park. And the Lady of the Lake starts making more than express trips up the 55-mile fjord to Stehekin over Memorial Day weekend as well. It's a great way to spend the day and see some of the state's most remote areas.

Stay at: Because it's always easier to stay at a place that has the comforts of home when you're traveling with kids, The Lookout at Chelan is an easy option. Individual vacation homes with hot tubs and BBQs are just the beginning of the comforts you crave. Private beach access, two pools, pocket parks and playgrounds are the other perks that are hard to beat. Beyond this vacation community, families can find tons of tent-cation or condo-cation accommodations to choose from at Lake Chelan.

An Island Adventure with Options

A child waits for the ferry in Anacortes on the way to San Juan Isldands for a Memorial Day road trips
Allison Sutcliffe

With numerous places to stay, camp or glamp, and several islands to hop, a three-day weekend getaway to the San Juan Islands is the perfect option for families itching to get out of town. Since island life is slower-paced, you’ll need to remember to pack your patience (and you can practice that in the ferry line when you reach Anacortes). No matter which island you choose, there’s something fun for everyone. The kids will have a blast kayaking and exploring historic parks. Everyone can enjoy boating, learning about Orca whales and looking for treasures on the beach. But these islands aren't just about beaches and bonfires. Mountain climbs and secret waterfalls are in the mix too. It's an outdoor lovers paradise.

Stay at: With so many choices to stay and so many possibilities for fun, Memorial Day Weekend 2022 might just be your family’s best one yet. But if you want a resort that has a little bit of something for everyone, you can't got wrong with Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes. It's got a family summer camp vibe that's hard to beat, and it's on San Juan Island. Also on San Juan Island: Roche Harbor or the Earthbox Inn & Spa. Our other island favorites include Pebble Cove Farm, Rosario Resort & Spa and West Beach Resort on Orcas and the Lopez Islander Resort on Lopez.

Good to know: Anacortes ferry reservations are a must! Reserve online before you go.

A Vacation in the Valley

Yakima Valley Tourism

Consider vacationing in the Yakima Valley for your extended Memorial Day weekend. A fantastic road trip destination, it's just over two hours from the city, and there's a good chance you'll have sunshine while you're there (the area boasts over 300 days of it annually). The Valley is all about farms, bikes and wonderful wineries—outside is the way to recreate here. Rent ebikes from Boost Bikes so you can go that extra mile (or more), and be sure to stop by one of the area's farms or fruit stands for seasonal veggies (don't miss the asparagus!). If you time it right, you might even be able to pick fresh strawberries at Bill's Berry Farm; they plan to open the fields May 21. And the Yakima Valley Museum's new mountaineering exhibit tells the story of four climbers who summited Mt. Rainier. Beyond these family adventures, you'll find lots of weekend-specific activities too. Prosser Aquatic Center is offering free family swim from May 28-30, and the summer concert series at VanArnam Vineyards start Memorial Day weekend. You can't go wrong with an outdoor concert, especially when kids under 16 don't need a ticket and dogs are welcome.

27 Bay Area Spots for Epic Family Picnics

15 Easy Bay Area Day Trips

If the only thing getting you through the winter is planning your next family beach vacation, we fully support you. We’ve rounded up our favorite beaches for low-key summer fun. From building a sand castle to family surfing lessons, these spots in Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico and California (among others) are sure to please. Read on to check out all the beaches that should be on your (sand) bucket list this summer and beyond.

Port Aransas & Mustang Island - TX

Courtesy Port Aransas/Mustang Island Tourism Bureau & Chamber of Commerce

Voted as one of Vacation Critic’s 2019 Best Beaches for Families, Port Aransas (known as Port A to locals) has made a full recovery since being battered by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Located on 18 miles of beachfront on Mustang Island, there’s no end to the fun for families. You can go birding at one of six sites along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, take the ferry to San Jose Island, a former ranch that is now an uninhabited wildlife preserve that’s perfect for a day trip, play with the kids on Port A beaches like Mustang Island State Park and Padre Island National Seashore. If you vacation in Port A in July, be sure to catch the Gulf Coast’s oldest fishing tournament the Annual Deep Sea Roundup. As far as food goes, this fishing mecca has 11 different restaurants that’ll cook up what you catch that very day.

From hotels to vacation rentals, lodging abounds. A few best-bet spots are the re-invented Palmilla Beach Resort & Golf Club—not only is there a restaurant and pool on the property, but the resort offers one of the nicest beaches on the island—the Sunflower Beach Resort & Residences, which is nestled among 50 acres of protected dunes along Mustang Island and offers amenities like a beach club, bike rentals and restaurants, and Cinnamon Shore, which offers a ton of family activities like Movie Night at Town Center, S'mores night, surfing lessons and shrimp boils on the beach.

Puerto Morelos, Mexico

Gabby Cullen

Nestled between the world’s second-largest barrier reef and an expansive nature preserve lies the tiny fishing village of Puerto Morelos. Home to just 1,200 year-round residents, you’ll find fresh seafood restaurants along the beach and people browsing through colorful shops, enjoying live music on the weekends and admiring the nearly century-old leaning lighthouse. It's the ideal location for a family trip or parents-only vacay.

What to do: It might be hard to choose between swimming in one of the nearby cenotes, snorkeling on the barrier reef (we loved the Lighthouse Tours two-hour tour), or visiting ancient Mayan Ruins. A highlight for families is Crococun, a local wildlife center filled with crocodiles, parrots, turtles, iguanas, spider monkeys and more. Each tour is guided by a biologist; kids will be able to hold a baby crocodile, feed deer and turtles, plus there’s a picnic/playground area that’s perfect for fueling up after seeing all the animals.

Where to stay: The ideal spot to stay during your visit is Grand Residences Riviera Cancun, a five-star resort that feels more like a home than a hotel. One of the things we loved about the Grand Residences Rivera Cancun is that it’s made up of all suite-style rooms, which means you have choices: You can book anything from a one-to three-bedroom suite that comes equipped with everything from a small kitchenette to a full kitchen/laundry with extra murphy beds in the living room. There’s a mix of oceanfront views and resort views, and all of the suites are pristine, with decor inspired by the local culture.

Ocean City, MD

If you’re looking for ocean waves, the scent of funnel cake and saltwater taffy, all while trying to find the very best tourist t-shirt, let us be your guide. Seeped in classic American culture, Ocean City, Maryland is the perfect spot for a quintessential beach boardwalk experience. Full of family fun (even in the shoulder season), history and sunshine.

What to do: During the summer months (which sees 300,000 people on an average weekend), visitors can enjoy the 26th Street Movies on the Beach series, concerts, surfing contests, family beach Olympics and festivals galore. If you want to skip the crowds, the fall and the holiday season offer plenty of fun too, like the Sunfest—an art festival with music, food and vendors, the Great Pumpkin Race, Halloween Beach Maze, Light-Up Downtown Winter Festival, and, of course, fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Where to stay: Hyatt Place is a great pick for families. It opened its doors in the fall of 2018; there are 105 rooms (56 of them are oceanfront), an indoor and outdoor pool, a buffet breakfast serving cage-free eggs, all-natural bacon, steel-cut oats, fruit, pastries and other kid-friendly food. In the summer and shoulder seasons, you'll find make-your-own sundaes on Fridays, and in the summer there's face painting, children’s entertainers and Mermaid Mondays.

The Islands of Tahiti

Kate Loweth

If something a little more exotic is on your radar for your next family vacation, Tahiti should be at the top of your list! With low-cost, direct flights on French Bee available from SFO, it’s an easy getaway to another world. You won’t have the crowds of other island destinations and the kids will love learning some Tahitian and French phrases while you are on your tropical family vacation.

What to do: Tahiti is full of gorgeous beaches that are practically deserted, a totally different experience from other island spots like Hawaii. In addition, you can learn about the history and culture of this island community with island tours and food tasting experiences.

Where to stay: If you plan to stay on the island of Tahiti for the duration of your visit, you'll want to head to the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort to enjoy the black sand of Matavai Bay. Located just a 15-minute drive from downtown Papeete, you'll love the relaxed tranquility that this hotel offers. Rooms include outdoor lanai balconies with water views and there are suites for families who need more room.

If you are up for a bit more adventure, book some time at Le Taha'a Resort and Spa. To get there, fly from Tahiti to the island of Raiatea where the resort will pick you up in a boat to take you to your island paradise. In addition to traditional overwater suites (which can sleep a couple plus one child), Le Taha'a offers massive beach villas to accommodate families. These villas are right on the beach and have a private plunge pool, air conditioning, outdoor shower and tub, free WiFi and a huge bathroom.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

If you are looking for a totally relaxed island vibe, definitely put Punta Cana on your beach vacation list. Because Punta Cana is in the Caribbean, the weather is beautiful all year round. If you’re looking to chill in this hotspot during a quieter, less crowded time, consider traveling March-May when the highs average in the low 80s. Hurricane season is June-November, but your chance of getting gorgeous weather is better than average. The warmest months on the island are June-September.

What to do: Ocean Adventures’ 3-hour Caribbean Pirates adventure will have you snorkeling with sharks and interacting with stingrays at Shark Island, exploring coral reefs and following treasure maps. Just don’t get too comfortable—you never know when rival pirates will attack. Included in the price is unlimited beverages, hotel pickup and drop-off, fruits and light snacks. As a bonus, kids come along for free.

Where to stay: The circle is the universal symbol of wholeness and perfection and all-inclusive The Grand Reserve at Paradisus by Melia Hotels in Punta Cana—with its circular design, classy but approachable vibe and an overall aura that magically expels stress—crushes that perfection goal. The Grand Reserve wants you to have a think-free vacation, so the experience is all-inclusive. And, keep in mind, Melia Hotels is hyper-focused on shattering the perception that runs rampant about all-inclusive vacations by offering guests an unparalleled luxurious experience.

St. Petersburg, FL

Amber Guetebier

Family vacations are one of those things you’ll never regret, but finding an affordable getaway that promises adventure, sandy beaches and culture all in one? It’s not impossible and you don’t even need a passport when you visit St. Petersburg, Florida (or St. Pete, as the locals know it).

What to do: The perfect formula for a family vacation is to find at least one thing that makes each person happy. Or you can go to the beach (which makes everyone happy at once). St. Pete Beach is one of the most beautiful and accessible beaches in Florida (home to many gorgeous beaches!). Located on the Gulf of Mexico side (just a short ride away from the heart of St. Petersburg), the kids can scoop and splash all day, you can chill in a cabana (bring along that novel! We packed two!) or go paddle boarding and parasailing, all without having to so much as hop in the car. There’s truly something for everyone.

Where to stay: St. Pete Beach has no shortage of beach-front or just-off-the-beach properties, from budget motels to grandiose palaces. Where you stay can make or break a family vaycay, but don’t get overwhelmed: just book a room at the Sirata Beach Resort. Not only is it affordable (rooms start at just $159 a night) it’s right on the beach and extremely family-friendly. They just completed a renovation in January of 2019 and parents will find the rooms spacious and comfy, many with kitchenettes and awesome views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

Mimi O'Connor

If you’re in search of a low-key, relaxed-but-elegant retreat for the family (that’s also conveniently located in paradise) Turks & Caicos’ Providenciales is calling.

What to do: One of the main things to do here, is nothing, in the very best way. Relax on the stunning white sand beaches while the kids splash in the breathtaking and mild turquoise waters. When you’re ready for some action, dive in with some snorkeling at the third-largest barrier reef in the world. (We like Caicos Dream Tours for a day trip to a good spot: you’ll love the staff, the kids will love shooting down the slide off the side of the boat.) You can also explore the island’s mangrove forests, gliding by baby turtles, colorful fish, lemon sharks and other friendly sea creatures, and take in myriad tropical birds; we recommend the mom and pop business WaterPlay TCI, who knows what kids like because they have one.

Where to stay: For understated elegance and stunning natural beauty, head to luxury resort The Shore Club, the first resort on pristine Long Bay Beach. The Shore Club is refined, but not at all stuffy, making it a fantastic retreat for families wanting to spend some quality time together. Choose from one of the four pools on the property, where you can graze on fare like sushi and fish tacos and relax in a cabana, as kids splash around and play with inflatables. The beach is a short stroll away, with waters shallow, calm, and perfect for testing out the kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and more.

Nassau, Bahamas

Tadeu Brunelli

If you’re looking to find a happy medium between a sophisticated oceanside retreat and a kid friendly, beachy resort, Nassau's Baha Mar, located on stunning Cable Beach, is the spot. You can all have fun and relax here, with a mix of curated restaurants offering top-notch cuisine (all with kids’ menus), a truly engaging Explorer’s Club for kids, and the Caribbean’s largest casino, which—shocker—has windows with some very nice views. (Have you ever been in a casino with windows? Probably not.)

What to do: Kids love pools, and there are a whopping 11 pools on site. Each has its own vibe, with some that cater to adults for either partying or enjoying a child-free zone, but more than a few are primo spots for playing the day away. Kids (and parents) will love “Dean’s Blue Hole”, where they can leap from two “cliffs” into the pool, and then swim over to The Grotto to get an underwater view of schools of fish, sea turtles, nurse sharks and stingrays through an aquarium-style wall of glass. Steps away is the beach, where guests can enjoy complimentary use of kayaks, snorkeling gear, floating lounges, and water hammocks. For fun on dry land, head to The BEACH Sanctuary (where those sea turtles, nurse sharks, and stingrays live) to observe the daily feedings of the animals at no cost, or book an interactive experience to get up close. And don’t miss the birds: Baha Mar’s The Aviary is the place to meet and feed beautiful tropical feathered friends, and the free, daily Flamingo Parade showcases the resort’s stunning pink flock.

Where to stay: Baha Mar is home to three hotels: The Grand Hyatt, luxury property Rosewood, and the contemporary and comfortable SLS—all of which have access to the resort’s amenities. We stayed at SLS, and loved its combination of chic surroundings, thoughtful design (charging ports next to the bed FTW), and superior yet warm and welcoming service. Stylish residence suites make staying as a family a delight, with a spacious living room, equipped kitchens, a washer/dryer, and dreamy beds.

The Keys, FL

Amber Guetebier

Bump the Florida Keys to the top of your beach list for its sandy beaches, turquoise waters and a rich array of activities, food and culture—all without a passport.

What to do: A sleepier Keys town, Key Largo has plenty of amenities along Hwy 1. Hit Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen for a super kid-friendly environment, great food and your perfect first Florida Keys vaycay photo opp. If you have a few hours to spare, it’s well worth a stop to go swimming or even snorkeling excursion at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Snorkeling tours are about 2.5 hours long, as are the glass-bottom boat tours. You can book everything at the park or in advance online if you want to guarantee your window.

Where to stay: Make Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key your home base, and venture to nearby Marathon Key and Key West for day trips. There are 5 pools + hot tubs and a salt-water swimming lagoon. The resort has a ton of daily, exciting activities for kids (like diving for jewels with the Pirate Queen Priscilla or swimming with the resident Mermaid, Coral). There’s an entire, well-stocked, craftacular Camp Hawk area that’s just a 30-second dash to a Pirate Ship splash pad (and another pool). There’s also a soccer field, playground and an 18-hole Putt-Putt course.

Lake Michigan, MI

For a change-of-scenery experience, hit Michigan’s beach towns in Harbor Country and further north. These beach communities have tons of secrets to discover, the greatest of which are mild temperatures, freshwater and a nostalgic vibe.

Where to go: In western Michigan, New Buffalo's blueberry picking can't be beaten July, and a trip to the Warren Dunes State Park before it gets too hot to conquer the massive dunes is definitely in order. Just up the road, the Silver Beach Center is a kiddie haven with a hand-painted giant carousel, Michigan's tallest kaleidoscope, and the Curious Kids' Museum, which is colorful and engaging enough to give Chicago museums a run for their money. For a different, tasty type of adventure, go a bit farther afield to Coloma and pick ripe cherries and peaches at Fruit Acres Farm Market.

Where to stay: In Holland, the Lake Ranch Resort is the only spot where you can stay on the water. It’s a 10-minute drive from downtown Holland and rooms range from two people up to 10. You can also check out the Holiday Inn and Conference Center that has cots and cribs, a game room, and babysitting services available... not to mention a Michigan-shaped heated pool.

Clearwater Beach, FL

Kristina Moy

Located on the west central coast of Florida, Clearwater Beach offers miles of white sugar sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters and a laid-back resort town vibe. The coastal gem, which has been named number one beach in America many times over, is reminiscent of a tropical island destination because of its subtropical climate, warm gentle waters and year-round sun.

What to do: Visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and meet rescued dolphins, Winter and Hope, and Herald the sea turtle (aka Mavis) from the Dolphin Tale movies and learn about the aquarium's dedication to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured marine animals back into the wild, public education, conservation and research. Take a sunset cruise and learn interesting facts about the natural wonders of the Gulf Coast and hit the Dolphin Trail. In the midst of Clearwater Beach is where you find Pier 60, an iconic 1,080-foot fishing pier and recreational park. If you’ve got a crew of little anglers, stop into the pier bait house and pick up everything you’ll need to reel in mangrove snapper, Spanish mackerel, flounder or other fish (depending on the time of year). The pier’s nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 festival offers a carnival-like atmosphere with street performers, artisans, musicians and local artists two hours before sunset and two hours after sunset, and is the perfect way to cap off a day at Clearwater Beach!

Where to stay: Centrally located in the heart of Clearwater Beach is where you will find the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach. This gorgeous resort, which opened its doors in 2017, boasts 343 luxuriously appointed guest rooms with spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway. Jekyll Island, GA

S. Massey

With miles of wide, flat beaches, bike trails through Spanish-moss-covered live oaks, and wildlife interactions at world-class facilities, Jekyll Island is a family vacation jackpot only four-and-a-half hours from Atlanta. One of Georgia's barrier islands, it was once a privately owned island by industrial era millionaires who used it as a sporting club. It is now one of Georgia's most untouched barrier islands—thanks to a stipulation that it should remain no more than 30% developed when it was sold to the State of Georgia in 1947 and established as a State Park. Stay at the Jekyll Island Club Resort the recently revitalized historic resort, for an experience that is as family-friendly as it is charming.

What to do: For the beach lovers, Jekyll Island offers wide, flat beaches that are particularly appealing to kiddos for their endless supply of castle-ready sand that doesn't seem to invade swimsuits and swim diapers as much as the fluffy white dunes found at the Gulf. And while many of the beaches on Jekyll Island are sure to please, don't pass up a chance to take the littles to Driftwood Beach.

Where to eat: While the island's developed space is limited, there are still plenty of dining options for families. Playground-side pizza at Red Bug Motors Pizza is served up hot and al fresco, Zachary's River House overlooks the Jekyll River, and Tortuga Jacks dishes solid Mexican food and live music nightly. Additional options can be found at the newly developed Beach Village (The Jekyll Market—complete with a deli, bbq and ice cream options—Fuse Frozen Yogurt, and the Jekyll Island Seafood Company, to name a few) and in the historic district.

Where to eat: When in Rome, eat spaghetti. When in The Abacos, eat seafood. Bahamian food is simple, delicious, and fresh. Keep an eye out for conch salad, a diced concoction with fresh conch, peppers, onions and lime juice, and don’t miss a chance to eat grilled spiny lobster—smaller in size than regular lobsters but twice as sweet. Firefly Bar & Grill at Firefly Sunset Resort on Elbow Cay serves a lobster quesadilla that you’ll write home about, while Nipper’s—known for its epic Sunday parties—serves both lightly fried lobster and conch fillets “burgers” that you won’t want to miss.

Where to stay: While home rentals and resorts are available throughout The Abacos, staying on Marsh Harbor affords guests an easy transfer from the airport and proximity to the Albury’s ferry dock. The Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour Marina is ideally situated near restaurants in Marsh Harbour—and the on-property restaurant, Angler's, is excellent.

Georgetown and Wells, ME

The state of Maine has many wonderful unassuming kid-centric beaches—it’s hard to list just one.

What to do: If you want to be sure that you’ll have a beach mostly all to yourself, check out Laudholm Beach in Wells, which is accessible via a short hike on Barrier Beach Trail. Part of Wells National estuarine research reserve, this beach is flanked by dunes and rewarded with soft uncrowded sands. You’ll notice plenty of birds, and if you walk north to the mouth of the Little River, you’ll see the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Reserve.

In Georgetown, you’ll find Reid State Park, just north of Bath. Full of sandy coastlines, marshes, grassy mounds, tidal rivers and a lagoon, you’ll find all sorts of sea life here—sand dollars, crabs, and the like.

What to eat: Either bring a picnic or plan on visiting a restaurant along the way and enjoying fresh lobster.

Washington Island: Door County, WI

Wendy Altschuler

Wisconsin and the Midwest may not be top of mind when thinking of great beach vacations, but Door County, with its 300 miles of shoreline (53 Lake Michigan beaches) and waterfront villages, is worth a look-see for your next family-friendly beach vacation.

What to do: For starters, check out School House Beach. Located about seven miles north of Door Peninsula, the beach isn't made of sand, but instead, it’s covered in smooth, super round, foot-massaging limestone rocks. You can hike to Mountain Park Lookout Tower for panoramic views of the island and surrounding lake; golf at Deer Run Golf Course; and hop on the ferry and cruise over to Rock Island where you’ll find a sandy beach and Wisconsin’s oldest lighthouse, Pottawatomie Lighthouse. Also, no trip to Washington Island is complete without a stop at Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop, the largest lavender farm in the Midwest. Here you’ll find a quaint bistro, open for lunch, tours and demonstrations on the working farm and a large shop full of take-home treasures. Read more about Door County here

Where to stay: Check travelwisconsin.com for a plethora of lodging options (waterfront cabins, historic hotels, boutique properties, tiny bed and breakfasts, camping—you name it, they have it.).

Astoria, Seaside and Cannon Beach, OR

Cruise along the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, and you’ll reach Astoria, Seaside, Pacific City, Cannon Beach and more.

You’ll also find lots of art galleries and cinematic nostalgia (Goonies was filmed near here.) Cannon Beach is popular for families and offers bird and whale watching and water activities like surfing and boating. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is another cool place to explore. This rolling-hills beach with giant dunes covers nearly 40 miles—it’s the largest dune expanse in North America. Of course, you’ll find lots of activities suited to the area: ATV riding, hiking, camping, etc.

Where to stay: From hotels to home rentals, you’ll find something to fit your budget here.

Kiawah Island, SC

Beachgoers have long known about South Carolina for soaking up vitamin sea, so the challenge here is finding the less populated beaches to enjoy with your family in tow.

What to do: Consider Kiawah Island, a coastal island off South Carolina with 10 miles of clean beaches and nearly 10,000 acres of natural woodlands. On Kiawah, the wide, mellow beach is lined by mostly townhomes and private residences, so there’s a homey vibe. You can rent bicycles, kayaks, shop in the quaint village center or walk the miles of paved trails perfect for spotting gators, fish and other creatures. Charleston is about 45 minutes away, perfect for a day trip to check out the historical sites and the amazing homes of Rainbow Row.

What to eat: Seafood joints are plenteous in the area, so take advantage of the local offerings. Red’s Ice House, on nearby Johns Island, has reasonably priced eats and amazing sunset views.

Los Cabos, Mexico

This easy to get to spot on the southern tip of Baja California Península is affordable and full of great beaches.

What to do: A quieter crescent-shaped beach is Playa Santa Maria. This bay is protected and has a great marine sanctuary, snorkeling above tropical and bright fish, swimming and a pinkish sandy beach. Chilleno Beach is a delight for families looking for great snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. There are several reefs, home to over 80 species of marine life. The beaches all along Los Cabos afford travelers whale and dolphin watching opportunities, bring some binoculars along with you and keep your peepers out for turtles. Kids will love watching the fishing boats return in the afternoon. Punta Palmilla is also a fantastic option, with its long and fat bay, swimming, snorkeling and natural beauty.

Where to stay: Hacienda Encantada Resort & Residences with its family-centric atmosphere, large pools with beautiful views and delicious dining options (including fun guacamole-making classes) is an ideal family-friendly option. The beaches all along Los Cabos afford travelers whale and dolphin watching opportunities, bring some binoculars along with you.

5 Questions Parents Should Consider When Planning a Family Beach Vacation

13 Best Beach Vacations You Want to Take NOW

Here’s Why You Should Take the Kids to the Beach ASAP, According to Science

With mid-winter break just around the corner, we know vacation is on your mind. While you can always count on Seattle families heading to sunnier skies, many are looking for the perfect winter getaway. Located within driving distance from Seattle, there is a magical winter wonderland that should be on the top of your travel list: Whistler, BC. With so much to explore, both on the mountain and in the vibrant Village, you’ll find something for everyone, from your littlest tikes to your biggest adrenaline junkie. To make planning your vacation hassle-free, we’ve rounded up the best places to sleep, eat and play that will leave you dreaming of those beautiful slopes, snow-covered trees and the bustling, whimsical Village.

Editor’s note: The CDC has recently advised against travel to Canada, although as we’ve seen with COVID, this can change quickly. Families can stay up-to-date with BC’s COVID response and guidelines in an effort to plan a safe vacation in the area. You’ll find information about COVID testing requirements at the border at the end of this article.

Where to Play

Whistler abounds with winter sports and activities for the whole family. We’ve rounded up a couple of our favorite options for adventure seekers and tiny explorers alike. But you can find more unique experiences throughout the resort using curated guides developed by Tourism Whistler and the Resort Municipality of Whistler.

Ski Whistler Blackcomb

Andrew Strain Photography for Whistler Blackcomb

If you’re making a trip to Whistler, you probably want to ski or snowboard while you’re there. So we’ve compiled some of the best options for ski lessons and kid-friendly ski areas on the mountains. Whistler is a great place for both beginners and advanced adventure seekers, so don’t worry about the terrain. You’ll be able to find the best slopes that suit your style and skill level.

Multi-Day Ski Camp
It doesn't get any better (or easier to learn) than Whistler Kids Adventure Camp. The camps are offered for kiddos ages 3 and up, and are a great option for weekday, multi-day lessons. Kids get to be with the same instructor and group for the entire week. The camp also offers other fun activities, like coloring and themes. They’ll make friends and have tons of fun. The instructors are patient and experts on snow. Hot chocolate, lunch and snacks are also included, so when your little mountaineers need a break, they can warm up with yummy food!

Camp runs Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. –3 p.m. Plan to drop off your little rippers at the designated drop off location around 8:45 a.m. and pick them up between 3-3:15 p.m. Pick-up and drop-off are conveniently located in Skiers Plaza at the bottom of Whistler Mountain. Bright blue signs will tell you where to check in for your child’s age group.

Insider tip: Get there early on your first day of camp. You’ll need to sign a couple forms and get their safety voucher. Make sure your child has pockets, or a place to fasten their ski pass and voucher. It’ll stay with them all week.

Single Day Lessons
If a full week of camp seems like a bit too much, you can also book child group ski and snowboard lessons or private lessons for the family. Space is limited, so we recommend booking in advance.

Insider tip: Set you and your kiddo up for success. Be sure to wear lots of layers, a helmet and goggles. On really cold days, pack hand warmers as well. If you’re renting equipment, be sure to pick it up the night before to alleviate some of the morning drop-off chaos.

Covid Info: Children ages 12 & up will be required to show proof of vaccination if you’re planning on ski camp or lessons. Proof of vaccination will need to be shown at drop-off at the ski and ride school.

Go Ice Skating

If outdoor ice skating is a family favorite of yours, Whistler village has a beautiful ice rink located on the north end of the Village at Whistler Olympic Plaza. It’s brightly lit with colorful luminaries, and the music will have you moving and grooving (and maybe falling a couple of times) while you skate. It’s great for tots and beginners alike. They offer plenty of skate aids for newbies who aren't so sure about gliding across the ice.

Insider tip: Adjacent to the skating rink is a snow park for kiddos in a big open field. There is also a playground close by. The park isn’t maintained in the winter, so play with caution.

Cost: $2/person; $8/person with skate rental; Free helmet rentals
Hours: 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m.; closed for maintenance between 1:30-2:30 p.m. & 5–6 p.m.

Play at Parks

There are so many hidden gems to explore when trekking around the mountains. Look out for areas specially designated as family zones. The enchanted forest and Tree Fort on Whistler Mountain and Magic Castle of Blackcomb Mountain are also areas that will delight your little adventurers. The outdoor play areas are a fun way to get outside and seek out a little magic.

Try Tubing

Kathryn Mueller

The Bubly Tube Park is fun for both kids and parents, who are young at heart. It operates into the early evening which makes it a great option for an after-skiing activity or on a day you need a break from the slopes. It offers about 1,000 feet of sliding and multiple lanes, and no training or equipment is required—a conveyor belt takes you back to the top when you’re ready for another run. The Tube Park is easily accessible from the Village via the Excalibur Gondola, located at the bottom of Whistler Mountain.

Hours: Weekdays, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.; Weekends & holidays, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Online: whistler.com/activities/tube-park

Ride the Gondola

One of the most spectacular things you can do while in Whistler is to sit back, get your camera ready and ride the gondolas to the many mountain peaks. If you’re interested in sightseeing, the Peak 2 Peak Gondola is an experience you won’t forget. Filled with 360-degree views of the Village, surrounding mountains and picturesque peaks, the ride is a heart-racing adventure and modern marvel that connects Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains. While you’re sightseeing, be sure to stop in one of the many dining options at the peak. Book a reservation before arriving, and don’t forget your photo ID and proof of vaccination.

Insider tip: Download the Tock app to easily book a time slot to dine.

Cost: $74/adult; $58/youth (13–18); $35/child (7–12); Free, kids 6 & under

Explore Rich Cultures

Kathryn Mueller

Whistler offers a great way for families to immerse themselves in beautiful, rich cultures. The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) is a wonderful place to explore stories, music and art of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations. Guided tours occur every hour on the hour, and you won’t want to miss the drums and opportunity to connect with a Cultural Ambassador. Don’t forget to swing by the Thunderbird Café for lunch or a snack while you’re there. The menu offers a unique selection of Indigenous-inspired options, all made with fresh and local ingredients. The café is located on the lower level next to the gift shop, a great place to stop and buy local.

Hours:  Tue.–Sun., 10 a.m.–5p.m.
Cost: $20/adult; $15/young adult (19-25); $5/child (6-12)
Online: slcc.ca

Plan a Date Night

If you need a night out, Babysitting Whistler offers childcare needs for your kids so you can plan a night out on the town. The service is super convenient (they come to you), and all their nannies are certified in first aid and CPR and have passed rigorous background and reference checks. The nannies are all incredibly friendly and personable, and they can care for kiddos as young as newborns up to 14 years old. To book a sitter call 888-906-2220 or email: info@babysittingwhistler.com.

Getting Around

Kathryn Mueller

One of the biggest perks offered in Whistler is the free shuttle services. BC Transit operates shuttles that connect visitors to Whistler Village and surrounding areas. It makes getting to the slopes hassle-free (we practically lived on Route 5 during this trip). From the Upper Village it can easily and safely cart everyone to ski school. Just remember that masks are required on all buses, so be sure to put them on before hoping aboard. Be sure to thank your driver and follow all the rules outlined on the buses. Pack up your crew, gear (skis, poles, gloves and all) and grab the next shuttle. Next stop, a great day on the mountain!

Where to Eat

There are quite literally hundreds of dining options in the vibrant Village—the heart of the mountain community. Whatever your tummy is rumbling for, you’ll find it here! From après snacks to fine dining options, the selection is sure to please any picky palate. Here are a few of our can’t-miss, kid-friendly spots.

Kathryn Mueller

Milestones
Located at the base of Whistler Blackcomb, Milestones is a great place to relax after lapping the green Magic chairlift with your kiddos. They offer brunch until 3 p.m., a big draw for many families (how can you resist an afternoon Eggs Benny?). Kids hot chocolate with a towering dollop of whip cream will warm those little fingers and put a smile on their faces, and coloring pages and crayons were a big hit as well. The kid’s menu offers a variety of great selections including pasta, chicken fingers and salmon.

Location: 4555 Blackcomb Way, Whistler, BC
Hours: Mon.-Fri., 1–8 p.m.; Sat. & Sun., noon–8 p.m.
Online: milestonesrestaurants.com

Sushi Village
Sushi Village is another popular spot in the Village for families. The Japanese cuisine is delicious, and the environment and welcoming staff make the experience great when you've got young kids. Avocado sushi and Chicken Karaage are two items we recommend for kids. For parents, they offer world-famous sake margaritas (you can ask for a virgin margarita for the little ones or yourself!). Whether you’re in the mood for specialty rolls, tempuras, noodles or sashimi. Another thing to love about the restaurant is the private dining options. For larger groups, they offer quaint nooks for dining. Take off your shoes, sit back and get ready for a truly amazing meal! Sushi Village’s selection won’t disappoint.

Insider tip: The bathroom is a bit of a trek down a long corridor attached to the restaurant. Be prepared to walk (not quite a mile) to get there.

Location: 4340 Sundial Crescent, Whistler, BC
Hours: Mon.–Thu., 4:30–10 p.m.; Fri.–Sun., noon–2:30 p.m. & 4:30–10 p.m.
Online: sushivillage.com

whister ski trip, kid friendly dining
L. L. via yelp

Mountain High Brewing Co.
We’re going to be honest, the food and beer selection here are great, but we whole-heartedly love this place for the train that delights children as it makes its way around the restaurant. For about 20 seconds every 10 minutes, the train will have your little engineers cheering “choo, choo!” as it chugs by. The restaurant is near the ice skating rink in the Olympic Plaza, so it’s a great place to stop for a quick bite after slipping and gliding to your hearts content. Menu pleasers include the pizza and chicken strips.

Insider tip: It’s a very popular dining option in the Village, so try to get there a bit early before the rush. Operations were also impacted by staffing, so call ahead or check the website to make sure they are open before you go. They don’t currently offer reservations, so it’s first come first serve. Underground parking is super convenient if you plan on driving.

Location: 4355 Blackcomb Way, Whistler, BC
Hours: Mon.–Thu., noon–9 p.m.; Fri. & Sat., noon–10 p.m.; Sun., noon–9 p.m.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
If you’re looking for a sweet treat for your little sugar lover, look no further than the chocolate haven of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. You can practically smell the chocolate from the Whistler Gondola! From fudge to caramel apples–with literally every topping imaginable–they have it all!

Where to Stay

Fairmont Chateau Whistler
The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a gorgeous luxury hotel plucked straight out of a fairytale. It sits just at the base of Whistler Blackcomb and is host to an array of amenities that will make you never want to leave. The 519-room resort offers various dining options in the hotel, a spa, health club, pools, fitness center, concierge, ski valet, even daily yoga classes. The hotel also offers activities that are geared toward families, and the décor in the hotel is wow-worthy. Located just behind the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a great sledding hill for little ones. Wind around the back of the hotel, and you'll see an open area for kiddos to have some fun in the snow.

The Westin Resort and Spa, Whistler
If you’re looking for a hotel that offers convenient luxury in the heart of the Village, the Westin Resort and Spa is a great fit. Just feet from the hotel is the Whistler Kids drop-off location for ski school and adventure camp, so if you’re worried about getting the kids out the door and to camp on time, you can take that worry off your list. The hotel offers amenities that make vacationing with kids easier, including valet parking, ski concierge, restaurants, spa and an indoor and outdoor pool. What more do you need?

Airbnb, Vrbo and VacationRenter
You don’t have to stay at a 5-star resort to enjoy Whistler. There are so many great options available through vacation rental sites like Airbnb, Vrbo or VactionRenter. Many offer all the things a family needs to stay comfortably, including hot tubs and ski-in/ski-out access. If lavish amenities aren’t must-haves, search through hundreds of vacation rentals until you find the one that fits your family the best!

Crossing into Canada

They say traveling is about the journey and not the destination. If you’re traveling to Whistler, we promise the destination will certainly be worth crossing the border. If you’re traveling from Seattle, there are two places you can cross—the Peace Arch Border Crossing or Pacific Highway Border Crossing—and Surrey is home to both. Check the webcams before you go for approximate wait times, which can be as long as two hours. Be prepared with lots of snacks and things to keep your Littles busy. Waiting is hard, and if your little one catches the wiggles, you’ll need some distractions.

Before making your way to the Canadian border, there are a few things you’re required to do prior to entry. Crossing is a little bit more complicated than it used to be, but we’ll walk you through what you need to know. These conditions may change, so please double-check information before you go.

1. Travelers ages 5 and up will need to get a COVID-19 test before going. Proof of a COVID-19 negative molecular test result is required to enter Canada, or you can provide proof of a previous positive test result taken between 14 and 180 days ago (starting January 15, 2022, between 10 and 180 days ago).

2. You are required to submit information regarding your trip through an app called ArriveCAN. It’s pretty easy to use, but make sure you don’t miss anything along the way, or you could be denied entry. Using the app is mandatory and all information must be submitted within 72 hours. Use the ArriveCAN app (available on iOS, Android and online) to submit information about each traveler, proof of vaccination status, as well as where you’ll be staying and where you’ll quarantine in Canada if you test positive for COVID-19.

3. Don’t forget your passport and information about your littles ones—birth certificates, social security cards, etc.

4. Don’t be surprised if you get randomly selected at the border to take a COVID-19 test. If you are randomly selected, the border crossing agent will provide you with a self-swab kit. Simply use the instructions in the kit to complete it within 24 hours of entering Canada and arrange for it to be picked up as directed—likely by FedEx pickup services.

Indoor COVID-19 Safety Protocols at Whistler:

1. Guests ages 12 and are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccinations to dine at restaurants. Adults 19 & up also need to provide a valid government photo ID with the name matching the name on the vaccination card.

2. Reservations are required for dining, but it’s easy to make one using the Tock app. Select a dine time at one of the many restaurants on the mountains. Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler Mountain and Rendezvous on Whistler Blackcomb are great options with spectacular views!

3. Face coverings are required indoors, including on gondolas, so bring your favorite masks on the trip.

The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa welcomes the holiday season with its six-week-long Annual Festival of Lights celebration, featuring one of the nation's most adored light displays that will wow both children and parents alike. Though the lights are the main attraction here, the experience is enhanced by “Dickens carolers, appearances by Santa, the world’s largest man-made mistletoe, horse-drawn carriage rides, freshly fallen snow, elaborately decorated Christmas trees; and delectable holiday confections at the famous Casey’s Cupcakes.”

Outside the hotel, the North Pole walkway will take you down the main pedestrian thoroughfare, lined with Santa’s elves filling his sleigh full of toys, a life-size gingerbread house, window displays, and more. Visitors have numerous opportunities to spend time with Santa, including breakfasts accompanied by a performance from the Inland Pacific Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker, and champagne brunches on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.

Throughout rest of the resort’s holiday season, you can take horse-drawn carriage rides, check out the live reindeer milling around the grounds, or snap a couples selfie under the world’s largest man-made mistletoe.
