If a wholesome dose of old-fashioned, Midwestern Americana sounds like the perfect setting for your next family adventure, then exploring the state of Nebraska should be on your family travel bucket list. With so much more than cornfields and wheat crops to explore, families making their way through the state can tromp through orchards, play on farms, wander through gardens and indulge a stunning array of culinary delights. Read on to discover the surprising (and tasty) adventures and family vacation to Nebraska has to offer.

Exploring Nebraska

From Omaha to Lincoln to Nebraska City, the great state of Nebraska offers visiting families room to run, play and explore. Each of these cities has its own charm, plenty of shopping, unique family adventures, awesome places to dine, and cool places to stay. Extend your vacation hopping from one city to the next as you take in the best the state has to offer.

Omaha

Do
Launch your family vacation in Omaha, where there is so much fun for visiting families to have. Your first stop? Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium! This amazing spot is dedicated to saving species around the world. With 130 acres to explore kids can stretch their legs while wandering through the world’s largest indoor desert and the largest indoor rainforest in North America. Your kids will get a thrill from meeting animals from all over the world and going on adventures that include underground caves and treks across the globe.

Get to know the town of Omaha better when you explore the Old Market Area. Packed with awesome shopping opportunities, this is the place to pick up your souvenirs. This area has an abundance of art galleries,  gift shops and candy stores your kids won’t want to leave. Once they are good and sugared up, you can take them to the nearby Heartland of America Park and Fountain where they can run along a paved path and play in the grass while taking in the water works show.

If you’re visiting Omaha in the fall…don’t miss Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard for a real Nebraska farm experience. Depending on when you visit, you cans spend your time plucking a variety of apples from trees or playing in the pumpkin patch and farm. Activities include a hay rack ride, barnyard adventure, haunted houses to wander through, a corn and pirate maze, a giant play area, a petting coral and so much more. It’s one of the most impressive farm experiences you are likely to have had.

Eat
Grab a tasty breakfast at the Saddle Creak breakfast Club where you can dine on traditional breakfasts with a modern twist. We suggest the Classic Biscuits and Gravy and the Ham and Eggs. Hit the Benson Brewery for lunch or dinner where you’ll find an elevated approach to pub food. We love the Bacon Blue Burger, but the Baked Mac & Cheese is our favorite dish for parents and kids alike. Best of all, this is the perfect spot for the vegan in your family, with options like Seitan Vegan wings. Forno offers visiting families another awesome lunch or dinner spot where you can grab a meal Italian style. The whole family will love their wood-fired pizza and selections of meats and cheeses. Take dessert to Ted & Wally’s where the whole family can enjoy locally-made ice cream, sundaes and soda fountain drinks.

Stay
The Courtyard Omaha La Vista is the perfect place to call home for your stay. The rooms are cozy and come in a variety of sizes and suites. Amenities include onsite dining and a fitness room so you can work off all of the food you’ll be eating.

Lincoln

Do
Make Bakers Candies the first stop once you hit Lincoln, the capital of the great state of Nebraska. Known as the official home of Nebraska’s famous chocolate meltaways, this shop will absolutely thrill the kiddos and give you tons of treats to take home or enjoy on the road. Candies are made onsite. Think of this shop as the state’s very own Willy Wonka chocolate factory.

Grab some fresh air at the Sunken Gardens where you and the kids can wander for hours and marvel at the koi pond, water fountains and rock gardens. Don’t skip the Lincoln Children’s Museum where you’ll find 23,000 square feet of exhibit space to explore. While you are there, head to the Apple Orchard exhibit where your kids will recognize items they saw on the farm.

Of course, you have to hit the farm for a real Nebraska experience. So hop on over to Rocca Berry Farm, home to the oldest and largest pumpkin patch in Lancaster County. Here you can make your way through the corn maze or let the kids play for hours on their giant slides, go on a hay ride, or ride the rails. There are so many attractions at this farm, you’ll be hard pressed to get through all of them in one day. There’s one thing you can count on though…at the end of your stay, your kids will be completely worn out!

Dine
Grab a coffee and some breakfast at the Alice in Wonderland themed Rabbit Hole Bakery. This spot offers a variety of pastries, muffins, scones and cinnamon rolls, all of which are sure to delight every member of your family. For a more filling afternoon meal, head to the Dish for some elevated fare. Options like seared steak salad and the bacon grilled cheese satisfy the biggest appetite. This spot serves lunch and dinner. Another popular dinner options is the Venue, where you’ll find an incredible steak and seafood menu. Try their seared Ahi tuna or New York Strip. The kids will love their handmade pastas.

Stay
Lincoln has a brand new hotel that is sure to be a treat for your family. Bringing a little big city to this Nebraska town, The Kindler recently opened and offers travelers luxury accommodations and next-level hospitality. Located in downtown Lincoln, you can choose from a variety of suites that come with all the amenities you need for comfort, onsite dining, and a fitness room. Even furry family members are welcome at this elegant hotel.

Nebraska City

Do
Your first stop in Nebraska City should be Arbor Day Farm! With 260 acres of stunning property and a treetop village to explore, this spot offers families a truly adventurous experience. While it’s famous for its apple picking opportunities, Arbor Day Farm gives visitors the opportunity to explore, play and soar through the treetops and gain a better understanding and appreciation for nature.

The three-acre treetop village allows children and adults to explore 11 tree houses without ever touching the ground. This attraction features the WonderNet, a trampoline suspended between trees, high above ground. You’ll be hard pressed to tear the kids away from this unique experience. Other opportunities for fun include the Discovery Ride and wine tasting for mom and dad.

Before you sack out for the night, hit Kimmel Orchard and head to their U-Pick barn or peruse their market for some tasty treats to bring home. This property features trails to wander along, hay rack rides, and the pollinator playground for the little ones’ enjoyment.

Dine
Your family is going to need a whole lot of fuel for all of the active fun this sweat city provides. Head to the Keeping Room for some of the best food in town. This cafe serves up classic comforts with a side of Nebraska style. We love their French dip and Turkey Panini. The kids will love the NY style cheesecake for dessert.

For some excellent Mexican fare, take your crew to El Portal where you can grab some traditional cuisine. From enchiladas to tamales to Tostadas, you’ll find all of your favorites in this family style eatery. Mom and dad will love their monster-sized margaritas after a day of swinging through trees.

Catch a home-cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner at Whispering Pines B&B, where you’ll also want to bunk for the night. The hostess makes delicious meals that will make grownups feel pampered and kids feel spoiled. Some beloved meals include Seasonal baked pancakes with homemade fruit topping and the egg fritatta.

Stay
The Whispering Pines B&B is the place to stay in Nebraska City. This beautiful historic 130 year-old home features modern comforts in a stunning old Victorian atmosphere. Sitting on six and a half acres, you’ll be surrounded by 100 year old pine trees, flower gardens, and a water garden with fountains. In the evening, you can sip a cocktail while soaking in a hot tub under the stars, or roast marshmallows over a fire.

Planning a Multi-Family Vacation? Here’s What You Need to Know

If your next “wrong turn” lands your family in Albuquerque, you’re in store for an exceptional experience. This vibrant New Mexico city offers visiting families the opportunity to go on aerial excursions, have close encounters with native wildlife and to get a front-row seat to traditional flamenco performances. Read on for a guide to a family vacation in Albuquerque that gives your crew a chance to experience the magic of the local culture firsthand.

Located in the High Desert, Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city. It was founded in 1706 as a Spanish colony, and today its vibrant history can be experienced all throughout the city.

Old Town
Families interested in experiencing Albuquerque’s rich culture can start by heading to the Historic Old Town. Considered the heart of the city, this area of town has a shopping plaza  with over 150 stores and galleries to peruse. It’s the perfect spot to pick up gifts or memorabilia with true southwestern flair.

The Albuquerque Museum can be found in the middle of old town just of Route 66. It gives families a dose of history with its massive collection of over 35,000 historical objects and permanent exhibits, as well as regular traveling exhibits. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science offers families a high-tech experience, bringing the past to life in its Dyna Theater and stunning stargazers with its planetarium. And the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center features the art, dance, and food of the 19 Pueblo tribes of New Mexico with exhibits and live entertainment.

While you are wandering around old town you’ll want to stop by the iconic Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe which is tucked away in a corner of the Patio Escondido Mall.

Flamenco
Flamenco is no small deal in Albuquerque. In fact, New Mexico is considered the center for Flamenco in the U.S., and Albuquerque is home to both the National Institute of Flamenco and the Festival Flamenco Albuquerque, which is the single largest gathering of flamenco performances in North America. Families can see incredible performances at the Hotel Albuquerque’s Tablao Flamenco where high-caliber dancers take the stage and put on an incredible show, while the audience dines on authentic Sevilla tapas and drinks regionally inspired fine wines and spirits.Best of all, Sunday nights are family nights! For an exceptional date night experience check out Casa Flamenca, where you are allowed to bring your own bites and sips and sit in an intimate setting that nearly puts you center stage with the dancers.

Trams, Zoo’s & More
For panoramic views of the Rio Grande Valley, grab the kids and catch a ride on the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway. It takes you 2.7 miles up over canyons to an observation deck at the top of the 10,378 foot Sandia Peak in the Cibola National Forest. Here you’ll find the soon-to-open restaurant, Ten3 where you can buy a bite before you head out to hike the peak’s wilderness trails.

If your kids love animals, plants and catching fish, then a day at the ABQ BioPark is a must. The bio park consists of a 64-acre zoo that offers an opportunity for close encounters with both exotic and local wildlife. Additionally, your kids will love visiting aquatic life at the Aquarium and wandering 1.5 miles of botanic garden paths. But the fun doesn’t stop there, Tingley Beach is located adjacent to the Rio Grand Boseque. It has three fishing ponds perfect for your young anglers and when you’ve caught all of the fish you can handle, you can rent a pedal boat and get on the pond!

STAY

There are so many wonderful places for families to stay in Albuquerque, but we’ve picked the best of the best. For an upscale stay in the city, we suggest the beautiful Hotel Andaluz Albuquerque. The fourth hotel built by Conrad Hilton in 1939, this beautifully restored building features a Spanish-inspired design that sets the tone for your cultural experience. The accommodations leave you wanting for nothing with each beautifully-appointed  room featuring luxury linens and free WiFi. The building features two restaurants and a fitness room.

For a truly unique experience, a stay at the El Vado Motel will thrill the history buffs and the fun-seekers in your family. Opened in 1937, this spot was one of the first places in New Mexico to welcome those coming off Route 66. Once a drive up motel, complete with a carports for each room and a gas pump (think Cars), these accommodations have been completely re-imagined. The mid-century, modern rooms are comfy and can fit the whole family, and right outside the door, you’ll find a pool and food and play court. Your crew can easily spend the whole day on site! Best of all, rooms are super affordable for those traveling on a budget.

Finally, if you want a break from the hustle of the city, Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm will not disappoint. This gorgeous lavender farm situates its rooms on 25 acres of lavender fields, surrounded by giant cottonwood trees. The classic New Mexican style accommodations are as beautiful as the surrounding area. With walls decorated with original artwork antique furnishing, luxury bedding and Los Poblanos’s own signature lavender spa amenities, you are guaranteed a dreamy stay. Kids have plenty of room to run with yard games available for entertainment, and the whole family will enjoy checking out the resident peacocks and lamas while taking in views of the Sandia mountains.

EAT

If your family loves fine Southwestern fare, Albuquerque will not disappoint. There are an endless number of fantastic eateries with delectable dishes. For breakfast and lunch, head to The Grove Cafe & Market where you can nosh on dishes like the Croque Madame and the Turkey Toastie all made from locally sourced food, much of which is organic. Fun fact: this cafe was a filming location for several scenes in Breaking Bad.

Even if you haven’t booked a stay at the El Vado, you can get a good dose of the fun these quirky accommodations offer in its food court. The El Vado features a changing lineup of food pods that house up-and-coming restaurants. You can enjoy a sweet treat at Rude Boy Cookies, get a taste of Costa Rican fare at Buen Provecho, enjoy some pizza at Sandia Crust Pizza or hang out in the El Vado Tap Room. Everyone gets what they want at this cool food court.

For a taste of delectable Rio Grand Valley Cuisine served in a stunning farm setting, head to Campo at Los Poblanos. Featuring a field-to-fork menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, diners get to choose from items like Forbidden Rice and handmade pasta. For an extra special experience, book the Chef’s Table where you and your young foodies can dine while enjoying a front-row seat to the chefs while in action.

Mas Tapas y Vino and the Ibiza Rooftop are located inside Hotel Andaluz. Mas tapas features the best of traditional Spanish cuisine in specialty dishes that are served for breakfast lunch and dinner. Their Latin American Power Bowl is the perfect fuel for an active day. And honey bacon wrapped dates, Iberico ribs and Manchego-Cheddar Mac & Cheese tapas make for the perfect dinner. End the evening with a cocktail at Ibiza Rooftop.

Albuquerque offers families a unique opportunity to look back in time and experience first-hand the unique cultures and traditions that combined to make New Mexico the beautiful, colorful place that it is. As you taste, dance and explore your way across the city, you’ll have a chance to expand your knowledge, tastes and you might even pick up a new hobby (think Flamenco!). You may even find yourself booking your next vacation to the area before you have even left.

If you’re thinking about your next family vacation (because who isn’t?) bump the Florida Keys to the top of your list. Offering sandy beaches, turquoise waters and a rich array of activities, food and culture—all without a passport. What do you need for a perfect vacation in the Florida Keys with your kids? You need to get there!

We recently spent five perfect days there and are here to share our tips for what not to miss when traveling through the Keys with kids. Scroll down for your itinerary.

Day 1: Upper & Middle Keys

Bob Care/Florida Keys News Bureau

If you aren’t within driving distance of the Florida Keys, you’ll likely fly in and out of Miami and rent a car to head south. While you can do Key West alone without a car, wheels are pretty necessary to see all of the hidden gems throughout the Keys that we’re going to list here.

Unlike other parts of Florida, the Keys maintain a cooler temperature in the summer thanks to the breezes. In fact, it's usually in the 70-80 degree range most of the summer months. Spring Break travel can bring peak prices, but the weather is often milder (can dip into the 60-70 degree range). Be cautious of planning a trip in September & October because of hurricane season.

Tip: Consider flying into Miami but flying out of Key West. You will pay a little more to drop your car off at the Key West airport (budget an extra $100) but you may find it’s worth it so you can see it all.

Amber Guetebier

Key Largo

Once you’ve navigated out of Miami metro area Key Largo makes the perfect stop for a bite to eat. A sleepier Keys town, with most of the obvious amenities along Hwy 1. Hit Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen (99336 Overseas Hwy., Key Largo, FL) for a super kid-friendly environment, great food and your perfect first Florida Keys vaycay photo opp.

If you have a few hours to spare, it’s well worth a stop to go swimming or even snorkeling excursion at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Snorkeling tours are about 2.5 hours long, as are glass bottom boat tours. You can book everything at the park or in advance online if you want to guarantee your window. If you have a little less time, you can stop and let the kids enjoy the sand and surf at Canon Beach, where the remnants of a Spanish shipwreck is just 100 feet offshore.

Tip: Get a good map. We found a few dead zones, especially in the Middle Keys.

Amber Guetebier

Overnight: Hawks Cay Resort at Duck Key

Make Hawks Cay Resort (61 Hawks Cay Blvd., Duck Key, FL) home-base for at least two nights if you can. We met tons of families that stay their entire week-long break right there, venturing to nearby Marathon and even driving down to Key West as day trips.

There are 5 pools + hot tubs and a salt-water swimming lagoon. The resort has a ton of daily, exciting activities for kids (like diving for jewels with the Pirate Queen Priscilla or swimming with the resident Mermaid, Coral). There’s an entire, well-stocked, craftacular Camp Hawk area that’s just a 30-second dash to a Pirate Ship splashpad (and another pool). There’s also a soccer field, playground and an 18-hole Putt-Putt course.

Amber Guetebier

The resort offers everything from breezy hotel rooms to multi-bedroom villas (some with their own pools!). Following Hurricane Irma, which devastated this area, the 60-acre property underwent a 50 million dollar renovation and not a detail was left out.

Included in your resort fee you’ll get valet parking, paddle boarding and kayaking (perfect for the lagoon), bikes and access to all of the above amenities. There is also a spa and fitness room right next to the Camp Hawk, where kids ages 5 and up can hang while you treat yo’self.

Book your room now at hawkscay.com.

Tip: Camp Hawk features environmental education camps and adventure camps for kids 5 and up, but those under 5 can use the rec area with parental supervision.

Day 2 Middle Keys

Amber Guetebier

Animal Encounters, Marathon

If Hawks Cay is your base, pry yourself off the glorious grounds and head a few minutes south to Marathon where you will find the Turtle Hospital (2396 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL). This is the perfect family stop to teach kids about the unique habitat of the Florida Keys, and raise awareness about the threats to the local (and global) sea turtle population. We highly recommend making a reservation in advance to visit. Tours are timed and—because it’s Florida and rain can come (and go) quickly—a rainy day crowd will quickly sell the tours out.

Hawks Cay Resort

If you’re craving more animal interaction, you can stop off at Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters (11710 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL) which features a ton of touch tanks—and even the opportunity to get in the tanks with the animals. If you’re staying at Hawks Cay Resort you can arrange to meet their resident dolphins through the Dolphin Connection program. (Brunch + dolphin encounter = best day ever.) Allow about an hour and 15 minutes for this experience from start to finish.

Amber Guetebier

Eating in Marathon

Don’t miss out on the authentic cuban cuisine you’ll find throughout the Keys. Cuban sandwiches come on the kind of soft roll kids adore. In Marathon you’ll find La Niña (1571 Overseas Hwy., Marathon, FL) or the Juice Paradise Cuban Cafe and Restaurant (2603 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL) where you can get smoothies for the kiddos and a Cuban coffee (called a colada). Pick up some Cuban sandwiches and head down to Sombrero Beach for the day. Gentle surf, turquoise waters and fine, white sand plus showers, restrooms and parking make this the perfect place to do a low-key beach day.

For dinner, try the Lighthouse Grill at Faro Blanco  (1996 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL) where you can eat outside in a casual-but-upscale atmosphere. There’s even a pool for the kids to splash in while you wait for dinner! Back at Hawks Cay Resort, the Angler & Ale is boathouse chic with a menu that is varied enough for adventurous palettes but tame enough for the littles. This is also another great excuse to eat Key Lime pie before heading back to your room.

Day 3 Middle & Lower Keys

Andy Newman/Florida Keys News Bureau

Grab a leisurely breakfast buffet on the property at Hawks Cay Marketplace, or hit up the Starbucks in the gift shop for lattes and pastries. If you haven’t had a chance yet, arrange an onsite dolphin encounter at Hawks Cay, let the kids swim one last time in the pool, and then hit the road south.

Bob Krist/Florida Keys News Bureau

The drive to Key West takes a little over an hour with no stops but we think you’re going to want to make at least a couple stops on the way. Just past Marathon proper, you’ll cross the infamous 7-mile bridge and not long after the end of the bridge you’ll find Bahia Honda State Park (36850 Overseas Hwy, Big Pine Key, FL) arguably one of the best places to snorkel in the keys. The park itself has amenities so you can arrange your excursion there.

Detour into Big Pine Key for healthy roadside sandwiches at Good Food Conspiracy. (30150 Overseas Hwy., Big Pine Key, FL) before continuing south.

Amber Guetebier

Continue on to Key West.

Key West has a rep for being a party town, but we promise you any time of year it’s kid-friendly and a real delight for families. Parking in Key West can be tricky, so if you decide to drive to the heart of the area, be prepared for a lot of pedestrian traffic and narrow streets. There are a number of paid parking lots, some of them down little side streets, so do yourself a favor and map out a few before you get there.

We recommend you check into Oceans Edge Resort & Marina (5950 Peninsular Ave, Key West, FL 33040) on Stock Island (Key West). It’s across the island from the downtown area of Key West, but it offers a complimentary daily shuttle to downtown every hour between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. (picks up downtown at 30 minutes past). When traveling with kids, this takes a lot of the stress out of it. You can relax, explore and then hop on that last shuttle home!

The Oceans Edge Resort is safe, secure and chic: the property boasts six oceanfront pools, a 165-slip marina, private balconies, a scenic harbor walk, the Yellowfin Bar & Grill for onsite dining, and access to fishing charters and snorkel boats. The resort fee ($37/day) includes access to 1 hour of complimentary paddleboard and kayak rental, free bike rentals, the shuttle, wi-fi and more. (Parking is $20/day.) The concierge can hook you up with outings and coupons for all kinds of discounts around town. Book online at oceansedgekeywest.com

DAYS 4 & 5: Key West

Museums Not to Miss

In spite of Key West's active night life, most attractions and museums open up by 8:30 or 9 a.m. which means you can get a full day in before the cocktail crowd comes out. There are no shortage of museums (we visited almost a dozen within a short walk of one another). Here are a few highlights you and the kiddos will love:

The Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum (907 Whitehead St, Key West, FL ) is not only a sweet oasis from the busy streets, it also features the descendants of Hemingway’s own famous six-toed cats. These cats have the run of the place and are as mellow as they come. You can pet them (but no picking them up.) If the kids are little, skip the guided tour and explore the property and historic home on your own.

The Mel Fischer Maritime Museum (200 Greene St, Key West, FL ) tells the story of this world-famous treasure hunter and includes many of the spoils he salvaged from the wreck of the Atocha. Upstairs you’ll find pirate history and a few interactive exhibits for the kids.

The Shipwreck Museum (1 Whitehead St, Key West, FL) has plenty of interactive fun for the kids but the real highlight is the view from the top of the tower.

See what all that salvaging can buy you by paying a visit to the Audubon House & Tropical Garden, (205 Whitehead St., Key West, FL)

The Key West Lighthouse & Keepers Quarters  (938 Whitehead St., Key West FL) is right across the street from the Hemingway Home. Kids 6 and under are free and you can climb the 88 steps to the top of the lighthouse.

Hidden gem: The Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center (35 E Quay Rd, Key West) offers free admission, educates kids about the delicate and unique eco-system of the Keys through hands-on exhibits, and is located just a short walk away from a big public playground and splashpad.

Tip: Fort East Martello Museum (3501 S Roosevelt Blvd, Key West, FL) is located (literally) right next to the Florida Keys airport, so make a pitstop there before departing to see Robert the Doll, a reputedly haunted doll who now makes this cool old brick fort his home.

Amber Guetebier

Adventures on Land & Sea

There are a great variety of sailing excursions you can embark on, but skip them all and book on one of the historic wooden Appledore schooners. The Appledore II sails in Key West during the winter months (she heads north to Camden, Maine for the summer) and the Appledore Star sails Key West year round. This is no party pontoon—the captain and his crew work the rigging and hoist the main right before your very eager eyes. Book at appledore2.com

Nearby, just off Mallory Square you'll find the Key West Historic Memorial Sculpture Garden, an impressive collection of the busts of famous people who lived in Key West, from shipwreck salvagers to confectioners to playwrights.

Tip: Don't forget to stop at the Southernmost Point in the Continental US (Whitehead St & South Street) for your classic Key West photo.

Swap the narrow cobblestone streets for some serious sand at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. The beach area itself offers cabana rentals, concessions, and killer turquoise water and the park include a historic fortress.

Hidden gem: Every day at Sunset off Mallory Square there's a Sunset Celebration where buskers and performers delight locals and tourists alike.

If you have more time at all, we recommend dedicating an entire day to visiting the Dry Tortugas National Park to explore a 19th century fort, snorkeling shipwrecks and coral reefs and more. It requires most of a full day, and it can get costly, but it's definitely a unique and memorable experience.

Andy Newman/Florida Keys News Bureau

Where to Eat in Key West

The rich culture of Key West, from Cuban influences to the abundance of fresh seafood, means there's no shortage of amazing cuisine. It is impossible to try every place and the beauty of Key West is once you visit, you just want to go back again and again. These are just a few spots you cannot miss.

Blue Heaven (729 Thomas St., Key West) is an oasis unto itself. They don't take reservations, so its first-come, first-served but trust us: it is worth the wait. We love it for breakfast where the crowd is mellow and hungry for Key Lime Hollandaise on their eggs. The vibe, which includes wandering chickens, is like an artsy backyard in the tropics. Oh, and it's located where Hemingway once refereed boxing matches.

Cuban Coffee Queen has two locations and some of the best Cuban coffee you can find in Key West. It's uber-casual and quick, meaning you can feed your hungry kiddos on the fly while upping your affine intake in style. Look for the location off Key Lime Square for real hidden gem.

Tip: Rule #1 when you're in the Keys: you will eat Key Lime Pie. And you might even eat it for breakfast. Nearly every place has it, and they all claim to be the best. It's your duty to try them all and compare.

Houston, Tx

Houston is a surprisingly vibrant city that provides visitors with access to a multitude of family-friendly museums, art installations, parks and diverse dining establishments. Your family has an endless array of adventures to choose from—and likely more than you can fit into one visit. We suggest you put your attraction-packed itinerary together in advance to get the most out of every minute you spend in this remarkable locale.

Parks
Your kids won’t want to miss stretching their legs at Houston’s incredible parks. Buffalo Bayou Park offers up 160 acres of green space that runs along 10 miles of the Bayou. Your family can bike or walk along paths that give you access to the water where you can kayak or canoe. Your kids will enjoy stopping off at the Barbara Fish Daniel Nature Play area or the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark. Additionally, this park offers a unique art experience—the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern—which is guaranteed to wow everyone in your family.

The first of the City’s underground drinking water reservoirs (built in 1926), the Cistern has been transformed into a public space that houses periodic art installations. Your kids will thrill at a walk through the 87,500-square-foot expanse which includes 25-foot tall concrete columns set row upon row, and hovering over two inches of water on the reservoir’s floor. The current installation features blinking lights in multiple colors and patterns, and an opportunity for visitors to become part of the experience.

Emancipation Park is Houston’s first public park, built in 1872. Recently renovated, it offers visitors a swimming pool with a spray park and lighted basketball and tennis courts. And Hermann Park, located right in the center of the city, is a must-see. It is next to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Children’s Museum of Houston, and it houses the Houston Zoo and the Japanese Tea Garden. Your family could easily spend the whole day going on paddle boats, train rides and exploring this gem of green space.

Activities
The Buffalo Bayou is central to Houston’s history and your family can learn all about it—and the city—on a Buffalo Bayou Pontoon Boat Tour. Appropriate for children ages 5 and up, this boat ride gives you a new an breathtaking view of the city over the course of a 1/2 hour excursion. There are a variety of experiences available including twilight tours, history tours, seasonal tours and more.

The Children’s Museum of Houston is a must on your list of things to experience. It features 14 permanent galleries and exhibits in a jaw-dropping 90,000 square feet of play space. Your kids will enjoy interactive play in areas like Kidtropolis, where babes run their own town! But, the Children’s Museum is just one of the many museums you should take time to check out. The Houston Museum of Natural Science is home to a Planetarium, a giant screen theater and so many exhibits your head will spin. Make sure to hit the Modern Hall of Paleontology, the Wiess Energy Hall, and how could you resist the Cabinet of Curiosities?

If you are a family of art lovers, then a trip to The Menil should be on your to-do list. This museum is free to everybody and features the famous Menil Collection. Located in a 30-acre neighborhood devoted to art, the museum was created out of the Menil family’s private and extensive collection. Pieces from around the world transport your family across time and space, and are likely to leave you speechless and filled with wonder.

You can’t leave Houston without a trip to the city zoo of course! The Houston Zoo is home to more than 4,500 animals that call the 55-acre attraction home. Travel through the African Forest, and say hello to the sea lions. Don’t forget to stop by and check out the elephants and giraffes too! If your kids love sea life, you must stop by the Kipp Aquarium where you can take a voyage from the Pacific to the Amazon Basin. The aquarium features over 200 species and 2,000 individual fresh and saltwater fish.

Theater
Houston has a whole district devoted to theater, so we suggest taking advantage it. If the weather is nice, catching a show at the Miller Outdoor Theater is ideal. Located in Hermann Park, mom and dad can relax and enjoy a show while the kiddos get their wiggles out. Theater venues worth checking out include the Alley Theatre, Jones Hall and the Wortham Center, which are all located next to one and other and showcase family productions on a regular basis.

EAT

An important thing to understand about eating in Houston is that your meals are more than just a way to fill your bellies, dining in this cultural mecca is an experience. You’ve heard of Tex-Mex cuisine, but have you ever tried Tex-In? Pull up a chair at Cowboys and Indians for this yummy fusion experience. From nann quesadillas to curries served alongside chicken fried steak to yummy samosas, this restaurant will introduce you to a modern take on Indian food and Southern comfort dishes that will leave everyone satisfied.

Do you have a family full of hungry adults and children with very different cravings? No problem. The Conservatory Beer Garden & Food Hall is extremely family friendly, super fun and full of awesome food options. This cool place features independent, local businesses that offer international cuisine. From pizza to bbq to pho, you will find everything your heart desires and more! There’s even a wine bar for sipping and clinking to celebrate this superior find.

The 8th Wonder Brewery has an impressive number of beers on tap and an awesome outdoor space for little ones who want to run around. For bites, they offer rotating food trucks that pull up outside so that you can enjoy bites and sips picnic style.

Finally, experience Houston’s authentic China town where you experience some of the best noodles you will ever have at Kuen Noodle House. Seriously, you won’t find better noodle soup anywhere, and your kids will love watching the noodles be made from scratch right in front of their eyes! That’s right, from flower and egg right to the bowl, it all happens right before your eyes. And oh my, the final product is amazing! You’ll want to head back for more.

STAY

If you want to feel like royalty, a stay at the The Four Seasons Hotel Houston is perfect. You will get a good dose of old-school Texas hospitality as the staff greets you and makes sure you make it from your ride to your room seamlessly. Book a room or a suite and enjoy incredible views, a luxurious bed and plenty of amenities. And while the swimming pool, fitness room, bar, and private rooms with the world’s first-ever Topgolf-branded simulator are all good reasons to be drawn to these accommodations, this hotel earns our approval for two additional reasons. First, The Four Seasons Hotel offers a family plan that doesn’t charge families an extra fee for children 18 years of age and younger occupying the same guest room as their parents or guardians. And, special rates may be available for two adults and two children 18 years of age and younger occupying two rooms.

Additionally, you’ll appreciate their firearm policy which prohibits any person from openly carrying any firearm in an unconcealed manner. They take their client’s safety and sense of security seriously, and that puts us all at ease.

Another solid choice is the Magnolia HotelIf you want unique lodging, the Magnolia Hotel in downtown Houston is your best bet. Beautiful rooms fill 22 stories of the historic building, the roof top pool gives guests a view of the Houston skyline and the fun, cheerful lobby is a welcome sight to weary travelers. The complimentary buffet breakfast is hearty and the milk and cookie bar is the perfect way to end a busy day.
