The colorful, creative world of Toca Boca is springing to life a brand new H&M kids collection featuring clothes and accessories your imaginative tykes will love.

It’s hard not to fall in love with the characters and designs of Toca Life’s collection of open-ended games. This new line isn’t just inspired by the look of the games, but also the meaning behind them. Within the Toca Life world kids can express themselves and that’s exactly what they are able to do with this new clothing collab.

“The essence of Toca Life is rooted in everyday life, so we made sure to represent every part of children’s day-to-day in the H&M collaboration. Maybe a kid wants their sweatshirt to reflect how they’re feeling, and partway through the day they decide they’re feeling a different way – it’s cool that their clothing can be a tool to reflect that,” says Sebastien Roux, Toca Boca’s Art Director.

Designed by the H&M kids in-house team, the collection includes jersey tops, sweatshirts, dresses and tracksuits made with 100 percent sustainably-sourced cotton. The pieces feature interactive elements, like foil prints, 3D applications and reversible sequins.

The new line also includes shoes and accessories, like sneakers, socks and soft toy bags featuring Toca Life characters.

The Toca Life x H&M collection is available in H&M stores and online now.

At the beginning of the year, Trader Joe’s announced plans to reduce the amount of plastic packaging used in stores and now you’ll start to notice some big changes taking place in the produce department

Even though most of Trader Joe’s plastic packaging already has the highest recycling acceptance rate, that’s still not enough for the eco-conscious grocery chain. As the company recently shared in this month’s Insider Trader Joe’s podcast, it’s beginning to take steps to go even greener, starting in the produce department. The first thing shoppers will notice is more loose, unpackaged produce.

“You’ll see it in our potato and onion section, and in our apples. We have more loose apples than we did before, and more loose potatoes and onions, too,”Jack, the category manager for produce at Trader Joe’s, explained to the podcast hosts. “But some things we need packaging on—it’s hard to sell loose blueberries.”

For those products, the company is testing out two new types of packaging according to Jack. One is a biodegradable and compostable cardboard-like material and the other is a recyclable plastic.

Trader Joe’s has created an ambitious plan to up its eco-efforts throughout the year, including removing unnecessary packaging, sourcing renewable and recycled packaging materials, choosing recyclable packaging, avoiding packaging made with harmful substances and educating consumers on best recycling and disposal practices.

In addition, Trader Joe’s new initiative includes reducing the number of solid plastic produce bags (such as potato bags), replacing Styrofoam meat trays with PET1 trays, replacing plastic greeting card sleeves with renewable, compostable ones, replacing plastic flower bags with renewable versions and getting rid of non-recyclable plastic and foil tea package pouches.

By committing to these new eco-friendly initiatives to cut down on packaging, Trader Joe’s is hopeful that it can eliminate more than one million pounds of plastic!

It looks like Pink’s Grammy Award is pretty much the best “award” around. If you’re wondering how that’s possible (she lost to Ariana Grande), read on for the so sweet story.

Pink didn’t actually attend this year’s Grammy Awards—and for a valid reason. Her toddler son, Jameson, was sick—and sometimes even celeb mamas have to stay home with their sick kids, Even so, she still got a very special Grammy of her own, when her kids made her a completely cute trophy.

Yep, instead of Grammy gold, Pink took home an adorable kid-created trophy made out of aluminum foil. Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the musician revealed that foil awards are actually a family tradition. Each time she loses (which really isn’t that often), hubby Carey Hart and their two kiddos break out the foil and get artsy.

Along with ‘gramming a pic of daughter Willow, 7, with the newest award, Pink also tweeted, “I think it’s kind of rad that I just lost my 20th Grammy nomination. I’m always honored to be included. Now to get this sick baby in the bathtub. Congrats to all the nominees! Have fun tonight.”

We love how Pink always manages to keep it all in perspective.

Designer, author, HGTV star and mama to five Joanna Gaines recently showed off just how much fun her fam is having during the wild winter weather. When the Polar Vortex put the deep freeze on, the Gaines’ got out and about—even baby Crew!

Gaines posted an absolutely aww-dorable pic, on Instagram, of her little cutie Crew bundled up in toasty-looking bunting—captioning the post, “My very own snow angel.”

While we’re pretty sure that Crew (who was born last June, making him well under one-year) didn’t make the “snow angel” himself, he certainly looks heavenly in his teeny tiny The North Face Infant Thermoball Bunting. But don’t worry, Crew isn’t the only baby who can benefit from this sweet snowsuit. The highly rated infant snowsuit sells on Amazon for between $120 and $215 (depending on the color and size choice).

If Crew’s cuddly bunting is more than you want to spend on a snowsuit that your kiddo will only get a few months’ wear out of, you have plenty of other similar choices.

Columbia’s Baby Snuggly Bunny Bunting ($65-$95), iXtreme’s Baby Expediaition Puffer Winter Snowsuit Bunting ($40) and the Wippette Heart Foil Pram ($25-$45) are all awesomely economical options!

If you’ve got a little Jedi who can’t stop waving around that light saber, and you’d like to channel all that swordplay into something a little safer than beheading teddy (or younger siblings), then a fencing class is just the thing. After a class at the new Silverlake Fencing Club kids will be thrusting and parrying with the best of them (and they won’t even realize the amazing exercise they’re getting, you sneaky parent).

Perhaps you’ve never considered fencing as a sport for your kids, but it may be time to! It’s amazing exercise, for the brain as well as the body. If your young athletes are serious about other sports, fencing will complement and hone skills. And for lots of kids who haven’t yet found the sport that they “click” with, fencing, with the cool gear and epic battles, could be the activity to turn them from spectator to future Olympian. To learn more about this lesser known sport, we went to the expert, Silverlake Fencing’s founder and main teacher, Coach Karolyn Szot (she’s the one in the middle, in the photo below).

Why do you think fencing is a great sport for kids?
Coach Karolyn: There really isn’t another sport quite like fencing. When participating in any activity, kids should come to the decision that they are passionate about it.  Fencing is a personal sport and it is dependent not only on physical ability but also your mental state. It is more a game of strategy than strength, and you don’t have to be the most macho kid in gym class to dominate at the sport.

By starting the sport of fencing at a young age, it will help to develop skills such as discipline, coordination, and the ability to think on your feet.  It teaches kids to use their bodies as well as minds to analyze an opponent’s moves and respond in a coordinated way.

How/why did you start fencing?
Coach Karolyn: I saw the movie the Parent Trap when I was young and loved the fencing scene!  I enrolled in a fencing summer camp at a local YMCA and fell love with the sport, and then found a local fencing club. My fencing club really inspired me to compete in local competitions that grew into qualifying for the Junior Olympics, Nationals, North American Cups, and then a World Cup tournament. Ultimately, that led to my recruitment to Northwestern University’s Division I fencing team. (So, think of fencing as an investment towards college scholarships!)

What do you like about teaching kids, and introducing them to the sport?
Coach Karolyn: You can always tell when a child is going to be a great at fencer because they have both determination and enthusiasm; I love seeing how a kid’s face lights up when they hold a foil in their hand for the first time.  When there is someone who at first is scared, I love to give them the encouragement they need by showing them a secret move to try or taking them aside to work on perfecting a move so they become more confident. Sometimes all it takes is watching an exciting fencing bout and then everyone wants to get up and try it out. Kids are the best to teach!

What’s the Sword Called?
In modern fencing, you can use a foil, epée or saber.  Here, your kids will learn on using a foil.  The target area is the torso, and kids wear a white suit, chest plate, full mask and glove.  All equipment is provided in the class, though you may want to get your child their own glove (and they’re going to beg you for their own foil, guaranteed).

Want to see a little sword fighting in action? Check it out by dropping into the Silverlake Flea Market on the second Saturday of any month. There you can watch a variety of fencing demonstrations (watch Coach Karolyn take on other expert fencers, or kids from class show off their skills, or even see kids working out with the adults).  The current kids class takes place on Thursday evenings at 5 p.m., and runs for 8 week sessions.  The first class is free, then the 8 week session is $178. Kids can also take a private class or get together a couple of friends to take a class together; Coach Karolyn will schedule times with you.

This beginner class introduces footwork, conditioning, basic techniques and skills, bouting tactics, etiquette and sportsmanship. Students will also dive into point practice and blade drills. It’s for kids 7-10.  She also offers classes for bigger kids, and adults, too.  Because admit it, you’ve always wanted to say, “Hello.  My name is Inigo Montoya.  You kill my father.  Prepare to die.”

Your kids can’t get enough of cowboy boots, hobby horses, and Woody from Toy Story. After all, there’s just something about the Wild West that appeals to kids (no rules, perhaps?). Scroll down to find out how to make a cool cowboy hat that’s so simple, there’ll still be time to stop a showdown at the OK Corral before the afternoon is over.

What You’ll Need

1. 1 cereal box

2. 1 sheet aluminum foil

3. Black or brown paint (acrylic or tempera)

4. Twine or rope

5. Elmer’s Glue

6. Scissors

7. Sharpie Pen

8. Jewels (optional)

9. Paintbrush

Step 1: Create the Headwear

Using the cereal box, cut one long straight strip, one shorter strip that curves up at the end (for the perfect hat brim!) and one rectangle piece with a half-circle cut in the middle that will serve as the front of the hat.

Step 2. Give the Hat Color

Using a paint color of your choice, cover all three pieces. Adding an additional layer is fine, but one should do the trick.

Step 3: Create a Sheriff’s Star

Fold the sheet of aluminum foil in half (the double layer helps to prevent tearing), then cut out a star shape. Write the words “Sheriff” and if your kid loves a little sparkle, here’s where those jewels will come in handy. Place glue along the inside of the layers to increase the star’s strength!

Step 4: Assemble the Headgear

First glue the front of the hat to the long straight piece, then follow with the shorter, curved piece on top. Make sure the shorter strip is glued above the long straight piece, so if really looks like it is the brim of the hat.

Step 5: Add On All the Fixin’s

Glue a piece of twine to the edge of the hat brim and then glue on the Sheriff’s star.

Step 5: Bring on the Cowpokes

Have your little sheriff hold the long straight piece around her head, then staple together. Then grab your horses and lassos for hours of fun!

Fish Tacos

Skip the battered fish tacos and try these fresh tilapia tacos instead from food blogger, Marissa of OMGFood. You’ll say, “OMG this is so good” after taking a bite. Read on for the full step-by-step recipe.

Ingredients:
2 tilapias, about 1lb
2 tablespoons extra light olive oil
juice from half a lemon
½ teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon coriander
1 teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Toppings:
8 corn or flour tortillas*
shredded cabbage
red onion, finely chopped
cilantro leaves (optional)
lime wedges (optional)

Good to know: Warm your tortillas by preheating a small skillet over medium heat. Place a tortilla in the pan one at a time for 30 seconds to a minute per side; until the tortillas are soft and warm. Set aside in a tortilla warmer or foil covered plate until ready to use (I warm my tortillas as the fish is cooking).

Method:
1. Combine olive oil, lemon juice, and spices in a small bowl and whisk until well blended.

2. Place the fish in a large bowl or ziplock and coat with the dressing. Let it marinate for at least twenty minutes or up to two hours.

3. Preheat skillet over medium-high heat.

4. Add fish to skillet and cook three minutes per side. Discard the remaining marinade.

5. Shred the fish with a fork.

6. Assemble tacos with toppings. Enjoy!

Fat free, protein, veggie filled and tastes amazing? Meet your new go-to Alfredo sauce! Pour it over pasta or use it in lasagna, this light and creamy sauce, courtesy of Veggies Don’t Bite, goes with just about anything.

Serves: Makes about 5 cups

Ingredients:
6 large cloves fresh garlic
2 heads cauliflower
1 cup garbanzo beans
1 cup veggie broth (non tomato based)
Himalayan pink salt to taste
1 cup fresh basil, sliced into shreds

Method:
1. Peel garlic and mix with a splash of veggie broth and some salt. Wrap in tin foil, and/or parchment and roast at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes until garlic is browning and looks caramelized.

2. Wash and boil or steam cauliflower until really tender, breaks apart when forked. About 20-30 minutes.

3. When garlic and cauliflower are done, put them in a highspeed blender along with the rest of the ingredients, except for the basil. Blend on high until creamy and smooth. At this point you can add some of the fresh basil into the blender and pulse it in for that fresh basil layer of flavor. Or you can leave it out and only put some basil on the top. We tried both ways and both were great!

Notes from the Chef: Depending on the size of your cauliflower, you may get less or more of the sauce. Make sure you use a veggie broth without tomatoes in it or the creamy Alfredo taste will be overpowered. If you want the sauce thinner, then ad more broth. You can also add more garlic if you really want the roasted garlic taste to come through, I love it so added more on round two and it was great!

Tips to prep ahead: This sauce freezes well so it can be prepped ahead of time and frozen for later use. When defrosting, do so slowly on the counter. You will need to mix or whip again with a whisk to regain the consistency.

Will you adopt this healthy twist on the classic Alfredo sauce?
