Back in March LEGO went into their archives and assembled a team of designers, creative and play experts to come up with new ways to help families stay creative and connected. Daily play challenges, new play ideas and live build-a-longs have been shared on social media. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day LEGO and NASA are inviting everyone to take part in their “Build a Planet” challenge.

LEGO

Born out of the LEGO and NASA partnership to celebrate the organization’s impact on the study and preservation of our Earth, the “Build A Planet” challenge is part of the LEGO #LetsBuildTogether platform. On the heels of a ‘second earth’ being discovered 300 light years away from us, LEGO and NASA are challenging everyone to think globally and build a planet of their choice! Whether it’s Earth, Mars, or better yet, Kepler-1649c – the mysterious new planet among the stars.

The challenge is launching Apr. 22 across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Stories so no one will have to wait 300 light years or 11.6 million years to fuel their curiosity. Look for the hashtags #LetsBuildTogether and #EarthDayAtHome.

Many kids do not receive enough fuel to get through the school day. Breakfast powers kids to reach their full potential, but many kids start off the day on an empty stomach. No Kid Hungry, a national campaign to end childhood hunger in America, is raising awareness around the power of school breakfast to help change that.

This week (March 1-7) is National School Breakfast Week and No Kid Hungry is teaming up with celebrities to launch their annual “Powered by Breakfast” initiative. No Kid Hungry is rallying support around breakfast served during school hours, and its benefit to the 1 in 7 kids in the US living with hunger.

No Kid Hungry is encouraging individuals across the country to sign an open letter to America’s children urging our nation’s leaders to help change the way school breakfast is served. The letter will be printed in a national publication next month for visibility among key decision makers.

A number of celebrity supporters have joined No Kid Hungry in raising their voices by signing the open letter; among current signatures are award-winning recording artist P!NK; actors Jeff Bridges and Kristen Bell; celebrity chefs and TV personalities Andrew Zimmern, Curtis Stone, Duff Goldman, and more. To join the list of supporters, anyone can text ‘SIGN’ to 877-877.

“My girls are fortunate; they get to start each day with full bellies, but it’s not the same reality for all kids. How can we expect kids to grow up healthy and strong, and do well in school if they don’t get the nourishment they need?” said Kristen Bell. “I signed No Kid Hungry’s open letter to children because I’ve gone into the classroom and seen the impact of school breakfast firsthand—by the simple act of serving breakfast in the classroom, kids are ready to learn! Kids can focus on just being kids, not the rumbling in their tummies. A healthy breakfast can make all the difference.”

10 Tips & Tricks That’ll Get Your Kids to Eat Better

How to Win the Battle against Picky Eaters

Playing with Your Food Changes Everything

IKEA is doing its part to reduce return waste. The Swedish furniture and home retailer recently announced a new partnership with the return optimization provider Optoro—and the results may just change the planet.

If you’re not sure how returns impact the environment, think about what happens to items that can’t return to store shelves, require extra packaging or are transported from one location to another. While a return here and there may not seem like a major problem, over time (and with the high volume of returns in the U.S. retail market) unwanted products can fill landfills and contribute to corporate carbon footprints.

The new collab between IKEA and Optoro seeks to remedy this situation. Javier Quiñones, President & Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA Retail U.S,, said in a press release, “We’re on a mission to become a circular business by 2030, and we need partners like Optoro who can help us achieve our goals.” Quiñones continued, “Optoro’s solution will enable us to eliminate much of the waste created in the reverse supply chain, from minimizing the carbon emissions released in return shipping to finding the best next homes for returned items.”

Tobin Moore, CEO and cofounder of Optoro, added, “IKEA shares our mission of looking to innovation and technology to build the circular economy. Through our work together, we will be able to make an even larger impact on reducing waste from returns, while also improving the customer experience to help fuel ecommerce growth.”

IKEA plans to implement Optoro’s technology in 10 distribution centers, 50 retail stores and the Customer Support Center in the United States.

IKEA’s Top 10 Most Useful Parenting Items

Do you envy those families who come back from their trips with hundreds of amazing photos and wonderful memories while your family trips end in tears, scrapes, and siblings not talking to each other? Well, here’s how you can plan your family trip that will guarantee zero tears and broken relationships.

1. Plan with the youngest family member in mind. When planning your day, keep your youngest kid in mind. Know that your little ones can’t walk all day and they won’t suddenly develop different needs and wishes just because you’re not home. Keep your schedule simple and have the patience for plenty of breaks. If you need to have a play stop at every local park in order to prevent meltdowns, do so!

2. Choose one big activity/destination per day. A city bus tour, natural history museum, horseback riding, no matter what you choose, make sure to keep your schedule very simple and opt for only one main activity per day. Older kids are willing to spend the entire day walking and exploring, but kids will not be ready to cooperate. With only one task for the day, you will feel amazing after you accomplish it and will have a lot of time for relaxation.

3. Don’t go anywhere without snacks. Kids can be unbearable when hungry, so don’t risk anything when going on adventures. Almost any problem can be solved with tasty snacks and treats, so stock up on Tupperware and pack your backpacks well. The fuel will always put a smile back on your kids’ faces.

4. Hit restaurants during off-hours. When the place is mostly empty, it will be so much easier to seat your big group and get the best service. When you’re done eating and ready to hit the road, let one adult take the kids outside while the other one stays to pay. These few minutes, while you’re waiting for the bill, is when most issues come up, so make sure to skip the scene and get your kids outside.

5. Don’t over plan. Tired kids, tired parents and a tight schedule do not mix together. It’s best to have a loose plan than a family that’s too busy to have any fun on their trip! Sometimes plans and schedules don’t work, so go with the flow and enjoy your time anyway.

By following these tricks, you’ll see that traveling with your kids can be a happy adventure for everyone.

My name is Sienna, and I am a full-time mum and proud owner of two beautiful dogs, Coco and Hulk. I am passionate about my pets and writing too, and found a way to help others by sharing my experience and writing about topics that are found useful.

This time of year, whether families are preparing to go back to school or already in the swing of a new school year, parents can always use a little help making sure they send their kids off for the best year yet. Juggling your kids’ busy schedules with your own can easily build up, from meetings to practice to homework all while getting dinner on the table each night, but that doesn’t mean parents have to revert to shortcuts when it comes to nutrition. There are plenty of better-for-you snack and meal options that can help families build healthy habits and provide the required nutrients.

As a working mom of two, I’m always looking for simple solutions like these to not only make the back to school transition easier on my own busy schedule, but to make sure I provide my kids with the proper snacks, meals and beverages that they like to eat and that will keep them fueled during all school activities from academics to athletics.

Now that my girls are teens, I’ve been doing the back to school routine for a while now, and like to think I’ve mastered the system – for the most part. The following tips have helped me along the way, so I’m sharing them in hopes that they will help other parents with kids of all ages feel confident that their kids are happy, healthy and ready to embark on their best school year yet.

  1. Take your kid to the grocery store with you at the beginning of the school year and allow them to choose 2-3 of their favorite fruits for their lunches or have as a snack after school. Fruit is important for kids to properly fuel up and making kids part of the decision making process is a great way to create healthy habits and try new foods!
  2. Try incorporating protein into your kid’s lunch and snacks. Protein is important to a child’s diet to help them grow, build muscle and keep their immune system strong. I recommend new Juicy Juice + Protein, one of the first juice-protein blends on the market for kids, it’s perfect for snack time or between meals, throughout their busy days.
  3. Make sure you include a variety of quality carbs, healthy fats, protein and fiber into your child’s after-school snacks for optimal fueling. One of my favorites for kids—my teens love it too—are peanut butter (or almond butter) and banana sandwiches with honey on whole wheat bread. Pro Tip: it’s also delicious toasted!
  4. Lower sugar juice options are ideal to avoid consuming too much sugar while also hydrating in a tasty way. A favorite of my two girls is new Juicy Juice Fruitifuls Organic, which is made with 45% less sugar than the leading juice while still providing half a cup of fruit in each 8 oz serving. It works well paired with nutritious meals before, during or after the school day.

With all the rainy days we’ve had, now is the perfect time to take the kids to check out a new indoor space. These two new museums are not your every day paining-on-the-wall spot. You’ll get to fully immerse yourself in the exhibits themselves. Perfect for the younger set, LMNL and the Museum of 3D Illusions will open your eyes to look at the world like you never have before. Here’s the full scoop!

LMNL by Onedome

Explore this labyrinth of digital art where everything you do creates a new experience. The 10,000-square foot Market Street space invites audiences into a new experience at the intersection of art and technology.

Kids will love seeing how their own movements create changes in the art. 14 rooms provide underwater, mirrored and light experiences. Grab a spot in a chair in the chair installation room and see how your heartbeat creates art on the wall.

Timed tickets offer an experience with limited guests but going earlier in the day tends to offer a less crowded space. Spend as much time as you’d like experiencing each room and go back to your favorites. You aren’t required to visit the rooms in a certain order which is great for kids.  Perhaps one of the favorite rooms was the “Fluid Structures” exhibit where you can have a digital water battle with your friends.

The Details
LMNL by Onedome is an all-ages exhibit. Purchase your timed tickets online in advance and enjoy the non-alcohol cafe Elixart before your visit LMNL. Here you can fuel up with lattes, kombucha and gourmet raw snacks. Free lockers are available for storing your gear right before you enter LMNL and there’s a spot to park your stroller as well.

Tickets: $33/adults, $22/youth ages 11-17, $11/kids 4-10, under 4 are free.

Museum of 3D Illusions

Fisherman’s Wharf is home to this new museum where you are guaranteed to get plenty of Instagram snaps to share with your friends. Kids will love being able to step into the artwork and make themselves a part of it.

The museum is made up of rooms that are covered in 3D art. Take a look at the example photos framed on the wall next to each exhibit for ideas on how best to interact with each art piece, or just do your own thing!

Zombies busting through walls, giant bugs coming to life, stairways that lead to nowhere and more—there’s all sorts of amazing art pieces. There are even a handful of nods to San Francisco from the giant redwoods to the cable cars.

Those with cameras should look on the floor for the indicators that show the best spot to stand to get your photo. It makes a big difference in getting the right perspective to make the art come to life.

The Details
The Museum of 3D Illusions is located right near Hotel Zephyr on Jefferson Street. Use one of the free lockers as you enter to store your belongings (only phones/cameras can be taken in). It can get pretty crowded on weekends so try for a weekday to make the most of your time. You can progress through the rooms as fast or as slow as you like, there’s no time limit.

Tickets: $25/adults, $10/ages 6-12, 5 and under are free
