Families come from all over the world to hike the trails in Mt. Rainier National Park. Lucky for you, taking your little explorers on a mountain adventure doesn’t involve quite as much planning. Live like the mountain is out with these not-to-be-missed hikes and highlights in our own backyard. Let’s hit the trail!

From the Nisqually Entrance

NPS/Emily Brouwer via flickr

The main park entrance is open again and there’s plenty to do just a short drive from the gate. Six miles in you’ll find the historic area of Longmire. Although there's lots to do there, these three options keep things simple for the kids (and parents!). Start with a less-than-a-mile hike around the Trail of the Shadows. Here you’ll find large, looming trees, fun-to-cross bridges and an old cabin the kids can explore. Next up is hiking a laid-back section of the Wonderland Trail. Look for a small sign next to the administrative building (the stone one with a flag) to pick up this sweet, riverside path that winds through the forest and lets you out at the Cougar Rock Campground. If the kids still have energy left, take them down to see Narada Falls, a little further up the road. Besides picnic tables and an arched bridge, families can hike down to the viewpoint to revel in the mist and possibly spy a rainbow. Keep a close eye on Littles as wet rocks can be slippery.

Open amenities: This is an easy spot to park and explore for the day, as restrooms are open, and families can snag cold grab ‘n’ go food (and water!) from the Longmire General Store or something hot to-go from the National Park Inn dining room, if you need to warm up.

Going to Paradise

NPS/Kevin Bacher via flickr

If you drive to Paradise, the Nisqually Vista and Myrtle Falls hikes are two that are totally do-able for families. Pack a lunch or snack and enjoy it at the Paradise Picnic Area, about a quarter-mile before the main parking lot, where you’ll find lots of tables and restrooms too. Bonus find—download the Paradise QR code (new this year) to get all the info you need digitally. You can find it in the park newspaper or posted outside the Paradise Visitor’s Center.

From the Carbon River Entrance

NPS

In the northwest corner or the park is the Carbon River Entrance. It’s the shortest drive from the city and offers miles of hikeable rainforest that might have you mistaking it for the Hoh. On a sunny day its shade is a welcome respite, and since it’s at a lower elevation, you don’t have to worry about snow, ever. The five-mile, out-and-back hike along Carbon River Road (don't worry, it's closed to traffic) is over level ground, so kids of any age can handle it. And the wide trails mean social distancing is easy too. Although you won't find picnic tables here, it’s just the excuse you need to pull up a log and enjoy a snack or lunch along the way. If your kids are older, consider biking this route. It's one of the few spots in the park where bike riding is allowed.

Good to know: The regular parking lot is closed, so parking is limited, but available. And although the trail is stroller friendly, getting your stroller to the trail can be tricky. There’s a narrow stretch where the road washed out, between where you park and the trailhead that may not accommodate strollers. But carrying it (and your kiddo) through the area is an option.

Open amenities: You’ll find porta potties here but not much else.

From the White River Entrance

NPS/A. Spillane via flickr

The entrance on the northeast corner of the park is how explorers get to Sunrise, the highest point you can drive to. If you’re looking for views, this is an easy spot to get them without much work. With tons of out-and-back trails that leave from the parking area, there’s one that’ll suit your kids’ abilities and your time frame, too. Take it easy on the Sunrise Nature Trail, a simple loop you can pick up at the end of the picnic area. It’s all about meadows and views. On your way up to Sunrise, be sure to stop at Tipsoo Lake for a quick half-mile stroll among mountain wildflowers. Families can also pick up the Naches Peak Loop trail here (psst..it’s usually not snow-free until August). Our tip? Hit these trails earlier in the morning to avoid afternoon crowds that make social distancing more of a challenge.

Open amenities: Although the Visitor’s Center at Sunrise is closed, families can find restrooms and grab ‘n’ go food to fill hungry tummies up here. Tipsoo Lake offers picnic tables and restrooms, making it a great place to spend a leisurely morning or afternoon.

From the Stevens Canyon Entrance

NPS/K.Loving

If an extra long day trip, or an adventure that includes an overnight stay is what you’re after, exploring Ohanapecosh (in the southeast corner) is the way to go. Don’t miss the popular Grove of the Patriarchs, especially if towering trees are your jam. Your kids will love walking among them as much as they’ll love crossing the cool suspension bridge that takes hikers over the Ohanapecosh River. Notice how blue and clear the water is? That’s because it’s snow melt, not glacier. The trail up to Silver Falls offers more of a challenge. It’s longer, but still level and loops right back to the campground where you started. Watch your kids carefully if you take this route. The waterfall spray makes rocks extra slippery.

Open amenities: You’ll find picnic tables and restrooms a plenty at the Ohanapecosh Campground. Pack in what you need to feed the kids, and don’t forget the water.

Save Some Green

NPS/Kevin Bacher via flickr

Visiting Mt. Rainier National Park is great; when you save money doing it, it’s even better. Put these upcoming 2020 free days on your calendar to play without paying: Aug. 25, Sept. 26 & Nov. 11. If you’ve got a fourth grader, the Every Kid in a Park program is another great way to save. Free entrance into any national park for your kiddo, plus family? Sign us up!

Recreate Responsibly

Mike via flickr

Things are definitely different at Mt. Rainier right now, and you’ll notice more than a few changes due to Covid-19. You can get the full scoop on what’s happening at the park to keep visitors safe and how you can recreate responsibly here. But families should expect the same requirements in the park that they find in other parts of the state. Bring your masks and use them when you aren’t able to social distance, and stick with your immediate group, whether you’re enjoying lunch at a picnic table or hiking along a trail. Hand sanitizer is a must, as is using it.

Know Before You Go

NPS/Kevin Bacher via flickr

1. Expect conditions that range from snow to sunshine until late summer. So dress in layers (and bring your sunscreen!) to keep everyone warm, dry and comfy.

2. Although grab ‘n’ go snacks are available at a few spots in the park, it’s always a good idea to bring extras and plenty of water so the kids stay happy.

3. If Junior Ranger badges are what your kids are after, they can still earn them this summer. Grab one on the way into the park and complete the activities while you’re there.

4. Fill up before you leave the city. Gas stations are scarce once you get near the park, and they’re non-existent within it.

5. Cell phone reception is limited, so print out any maps or download any apps you need before you go.

6. Keep your fur babies at home, please, as they aren’t allowed in Mt. Rainier.

7. Rainy weather means fewer people. So if you can handle a drizzle, consider visiting on a rainy or overcast day to make social distancing that much easier.

8. There are lots of national park and forest passes that will get you in to Mt. Rainier. Remember to bring yours!

My family moved to Dallas two months ago and we’re already in love with the city! We’ve been on a mission to try new things each weekend and explore as much as possible. There are so many amazing, family friendly experiences in Dallas. Our family has found a lot of fun around the city and we still have a long list of more things we want to try. This list is full of ideas for a fabulous family day in Dallas, Texas!

http://www.instagram.com/p/BnsD_Z-ha7_/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

Bishop Arts District  This area is full of unique murals, trendy shops, and delicious food! Bishop Arts District is the perfect place to walk around with your family and take lots of Instagram worthy pictures. Shop at some unique stores and make sure you get a bite to eat. For some amazing barbecue, I recommend Lockhart Smokehouse BBQ and if you want something sweet be sure to stop at Picole Pops!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BnShuoAHE3W/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

Dallas Zoo A day at the Dallas Zoo with your family will be a day well spent! Every animal you want to see is at this large zoo plus some extra experiences like giraffe feeding, petting zoo and play space for the kids to run around and climb. It was hot and rainy the day we went, but it didn’t ruin our day because there are so many shady and sheltered spots to cool off. Make sure to check out the Hillcrest Foundation Nature Exchange which is quite a unique swap shop!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BnP7RX4Hid6/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

Perot Museum of Nature and Science  This museum is level on level of space to learn and explore! There is so much here to engage the whole family and plenty of hands-on activities for your little scientists. Some things my kids enjoyed the most was building, experimenting with sound, learning about animals and experiencing virtual reality. Feel like watching a 3D movie at the museum? Well, you can at Perot’s movie theater! Plan on spending at least a few hours here so you can experience everything.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnb7TWnHybA/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden  If enjoying nature is your family’s thing, then going to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a must! Take advantage of the beautiful photo opportunities and leisurely stroll these stunning grounds. Do not miss the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden! You will be as amazed as your kids in this imaginative play land.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BnEM2b8HsWA/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

Dallas Museum of Art and Klyde Warren Park  These two activities are great together, because they are in walking distance of each other and they’re both free! The museum has a children’s section with an awesome giant peg board and, of course, lots of artwork to admire. The park has a playground and water play area for the kids to run around plus food trucks every day from 11am-4pm. Check https://www.klydewarrenpark.org for events to make your day there extra fun!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BnZqMyrnpMC/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

Trinity Groves This area has a wide variety of food options so you’ll have no problem finding a spot that satisfies everyone’s cravings! I would recommend trying Off Site Kitchen for some delicious burgers and Bingbox for a frozen treat. Be sure to take a walk after your meal to snap some pictures of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. As you walk along the pedestrian bridge beside Margaret Hunt Hill bridge, there are even random structures for kids to play and climb!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BnpmESlhF12/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

White Rock Lake Park Spend some family time in the great outdoors at White Rock! This large park has a playground, trails for walking or biking, and kayak rentals with White Rock Paddle Company. There’s also a dog park so your fur babies can get in on the fun. If you’re looking for a place to eat after your family adventure, Lake House White Rock Bar & Grill is a casual and tasty option!

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnj6UQ1hXpF/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

Addison Circle Visit Addison Circle during the day to hang out at the park and get a coffee at Astoria Caffe. We like to take advantage of the many grassy areas to play with a soccer ball or football. Walk around in the evening and enjoy dinner at Taco Borracho, The Lion & Crown or another one of the great restaurants that the area has to offer! Addison Circle also hosts great events like Oktoberfest and Kaboom Town.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnfc8lyHp83/?taken-by=withkidsfamily

Dallas World Aquarium  It doesn’t get much better than a family day at the aquarium! So many animals to see up close that I wasn’t expecting like penguins, a manatee and sharks. The manatee’s tank has a huge glass viewing wall so my kids watched in awe for a long time! We brought our stroller but wished we hadn’t because some areas were narrow and a little difficult to push it through. This Dallas must-see is the perfect indoor activity for a super hot or rainy day!

I’m Murphee, a wife, mom of two and ocean lover! Our little family recently began a new adventure that brought a big change for me: I went from Floridian early childhood teacher to stay-at-home mom in Texas. I love exploring with my young children, trying new food and road tripping.

Outside is the name of the game this summer. And any way you look at, it riding the Mount Rainier Gondola is the pinnacle of summertime adventure. But that’s just the cherry on top of family-friendly activities you can find at Crystal Mountain Resort. Read on to plan the perfect mountain play day with your crew.

1. Ride with a View

Allison Sutcliffe

Although the destination is the highlight of the gondola ride, the journey itself is an awesome experience that’ll dazzle your adventurous half-pint. It’s like playing I-spy with 360-degree views, and trying not to miss anything as you travel 2,000 vertical feet during the leisurely 12-minute ride. The now-bare ski terrain reveals mountain wild flowers, animal trails and if you’re lucky, some wild critters too. When you look up you can spot mountain cabins, fields in the middle of lush forests and jagged mountain peaks that will leave everyone guessing which one is which. Psst... each gondola houses up to eight people for the smooth ride to the top.

Spectacular Summit

Allison Sutcliffe

The view from up top is what it’s all about. From the moment you step off the gondola at 6,800 feet, snowy Mt. Rainier’s presence looms. It’s larger than life and no matter where you wander it’s in view. In fact, on a clear day you can see all the way from Mt. Adams, to Mt. Saint Helens on to Rainier and up to Mt. Baker from most vantage points along the ridge. There are a few spots where you and your kidlet can take it all in. If you’re feeling brave, try the sling back deck chairs that line the ridge by the Summit House restaurant. But if sitting there’s too edgy for your Little, head toward the picnic tables off to the right of the lift. They’re lined up along the ridge so you can enjoy the snow-capped peaks that surround you while getting your nosh on.

2. Hit the Trails

Allison Sutcliffe

Exploring at the summit is easy to do with your sidekick. You can hike at your own pace along the ridge trails that branch out in either direction from the landing point without much planning. If this option is up your alley, grab an area trails map at the ticket kiosks before you head up the mountain. A quick out and back hike is just as informative and exciting as a longer, winding walk across the ridge. If you’re feeling super adventurous, families can ride the gondola up and take one of two trails back down to the base. Plan a solid two hours to make the trek and bring hiking essentials like food, water, poles and sturdy shoes if you go.

Good to know: Snow is a definite possibility on trails at high elevation until late summer.

3. Mine for Treasure

Julian Mining Company

Hit the Silver Creek Mining Sluice at the base of the mountain for an old-timey activity. The kids can pan for fossils or gems when you purchase a 3-pound bag of dirt ($7.95) at Right Angle Sports. Everything you need to find these tiny treasures is there—pans, running water and a sluice box that stands just the right height for little gold miners. Best part? Anything the kids find, they get to keep.

4. Play a Round of Disc Golf

Allison Sutcliffe

Pack Frisbees with your gear (or rent them from Right Angle Sports) if you want to play the lower, 9-hole disc golf course while you’re visiting the mountain. Even if you don’t follow the disc golf rules to a tee, sinking baskets and walking around the mountain basin on a sunny summer day is an awesome way to wear the kids out. The course starts behind the chapel, and it’s easy to spot upcoming baskets each time you score. It’s the excuse you need to stay and play a little longer in the mountains.

5. Mosey on with a Horseback Ride

Horseback riding - Yellowstone
Xanterra Travel Collection

Top off your day with a horseback ride through the mountains you’ve been admiring. The wranglers and guides at Crystal Mountain Outfitters, above the C parking lot, can get you riding in no time. They offer one-hour long rides ($40/person), two-hour long rides ($75/person), a scenic ride ($110/person), a three-hour long tour ($125/person) and a half-day, five-hour long ride ($190/person) if you want to truly go the distance through the Cascade wilderness. You can also tag them for specialty tours (like fishing) and overnight adventures, too. Anyone who’s six and older can saddle up. You can use your card to book a reservation (with a $10 convenience fee) or use cash to avoid it (psst… cash works best to tip your wranglers, too.) Rides just opened for the season (June 27) and they run through Labor Day.

6. Elevated Eats

Allison Sutcliffe

At 6,872 feet, the Summit House Restaurant is the highest eatery in Washington state. So pulling up a bench on their outdoor patio is a must-do, and not just because of the altitude. The view of Rainier, framed by the colorful planter boxes is about as picture perfect as you can get. And the menu’s got items that’ll please everyone in your bunch. In-restaurant dining isn't currently an option, but you can grab to-go order from the pick up window. Bring your appetite because portions are generous. The Fireside Cantina takes care of hungry explorers at the base. They serve grab-and-go street tacos and provide a shady spot to eat under the over-sized canopy. It’s the place to be on a hot afternoon.

Allison Sutcliffe

What to Pack… Beyond Diaper Bag Basics

1. Masks. They are required inside, outside and in lines, so be sure to pack yours with you. Hand sanitizer, too!

2. Even on a sunny day it can be super breezy at the summit, so be sure to bring extra layers for the fam.

3. The sun at altitude is intense, and there’s not a whole lot of shade up top. So bring all the protection you can muster: sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses and more!

4. Even if hiking isn’t in the cards for your fam, pack water bottles. On a sunny day it’s hot up top and dry too.

Good to know: You can bring your fur babies with you, too. Just keep them leashed and pick up after them so the pristine wilderness stays that way.

National Random Acts of Kindness Day is on February 18, 2020. Gestures of kindness can be anything from making a thank you card for someone, holding the door for a stranger and telling them to have a nice day. The day is also a great opportunity to show kids all the ways they can have fun creating and sharing kindness.

1. Help out a friend or neighbor anonymously. Make someone smile with no strings attached—shovel the snow from your neighbor’s sidewalk, or leave a basket of cookies just because, no thanks needed.

2. Be a baby/dog/cat-sitter for free. Many parents (of humans and fur babies) forego taking time out for themselves because sitters’ rates are often expensive. They will certainly appreciate your offer to look after their precious little ones without charge.

3. Bring out the chalk! Everybody loves to be appreciated and cheered. On a nice day, surprise someone with a special message using sidewalk art! You may never realize how much it lifts someone’s mood.

4. Make a “Kindness Jar.” Keep track of all acts of kindness with a “Kindness Jar.” Every time someone in your family does a random act of kindness, write it on a piece of paper with their name and put it in the jar. When it’s full, sort through it to see who was the kindest. Then, that person can pick an act of kindness that everyone else should do!

5. Celebrate a friend for being awesome. For older kids, text message friends and let them know they are special with a fun silly gif video or go to GiveAnAwesome.com and celebrate a person for being and doing something awesome.

6. Create a “Kindness Challenge” from the AWESOME app. Entrepreneur and dad, Bert Pope, developed Awesome, The Social Network for Kindness, a free mobile application that’s also a game where your profile gets brighter and changes colors as you level up with acts of kindness. You can also use the “Kindness template,” and upload a photo or video clip, add a title and description for your “Kindness Challenge” and share it with all the users on AWESOME. Sharing and spreading kindness is, of course, awesome.

Bert Pope, a father of four and the CEO of Awesome Company Worldwide, where he has launched the #BEAWESOME movement to make the world a better place.  Awesome is the social network for kindness, where members are encouraged and rewarded for doing and sharing acts of kindness in their daily lives.

Watch out for the life-sized replicas that spray water, your little ones might get wet! Don't forget to check out the live show where your kids can interact with realistic dinos. Be sure to plan your visit before the dinosaurs become extinct (again!) on September 2, 2019.

Dinosaur Land

Toddlin' Across America

A roadside gem, Dinosaur Land invites tiny paleontologists to step back into prehistoric times. After 50 years of family fun, you might meet a parent that visited when they were little and are back with the next generation. Dinosaurs are the main attraction, but you can also get up-close-and-personal with a big shark, King Kong look-alike and a giant octopus. On your way out, your dino-lovers might go nuts over the rows and rows of dino toys.

Worth the Drive: Dinosaur Kingdom II

This wooded, walking adventure is totally weird and wildly fun.  Here, dinosaurs meet Civil War soldiers with a few silly movie references thrown in for a giggle. Think Stonewall Jackson meets snarling Spinosaurus. They even allow dinosaur lovers to host their birthday parties at the kingdom. You’ll need a camera handy to capture all the crazy photo op fun.
