However, they know that having fun is just as important. Laser Tag is a really big deal here. Ocean5 features a two-story laser tag arena that can accommodate up to 40 people per game. As if you needed yet another reason to get out and enjoy Seattle's spelndid scenery, the folks at Cycle Saloon have found one for you. This crazy contraption seats 16 guests who peddle around the streets of Ballard on various pub crawls or brewery tours. It will surely make your kids jealous, but tough nuggets kiddos, parents need their exercise. Despite its name, riders don’t actually drink and drive (drinking on the bike is the same as drinking in public and carries all the same consequences under the law). But during this excursion, you don’t have worry about driving at all. That's because each oversized bike comes with its own driver. There are five pedaling seats on each side of the vehicle, a bench in the back that seats three non-pedaling guests and one standing spot in the middle for what they've deemed for the “dancer.” And guess what? You can bring any food and non-alcoholic beverages aboard as well. You can book individually or as a group. Just remember...all riders must at least 21 years of age and all peddlers need to be at least 5’3”.
Insider Tip: The company also operates the Cycle Saloon Pontoon which operates with the same principle on water taking you around South Lake Union. Although dubbed the "booze cruise,” the pontoon doesn’t make any stops for liquor during its 1.5 hour tour. Even so, you still must be 21 to hop aboard.

The cold-weather months have officially arrived and most of Chicago is staying close to home. For a change of scenery or maybe a quick getaway without the kids, escape to a sweet cabin in the woods. We found cabins, cottages, and even a converted grain bin close to Chicago to unplug and schedule time amongst the trees and alongside lakes. Make a plan for now, or plan ahead for spring to relax, unwind and say hey to Mother Nature.

This spot is a bit of a hike from Chicago, but it is so great we felt it was worth a share. Plus, a road trip might be just what you need to break up the routine. New-ish to the glamping scene, Camp Long Creek at Big Cedar Lodge invites guests to get their glamp on near Missouri's Ozark Mountains with luxury glamping tents, camp huts, and camp cabins. The definitely-not-roughing-it amenities include beach access and a pool during the summer months, a vintage airstream trailer that serves food & drinks, and a must-have s'mores kit upon arrival. They also have programming for families that include scavenger hunts and guided adventures along the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail.
This may not be a cabin, but a barn is just as fun! Barn of Three Oaks is situated between Three Oaks and New Buffalo, MI, and close to Lake Michigan, restaurants, distilleries, wineries and breweries, and boutique shopping. Oh, and stunning sunsets. Come ready for family movie nights in front of the TV that's ready to stream and game nights at the shuffleboard table. A wood-burning fireplace keeps things warm and cozy.
Sawyer, MI is located just over an hour from Chicago, a little past New Buffalo. They've recently seen an uptick in new shops and restaurants, making it a good spot to check out any time of year. This farmhouse cottage in is bikeable to local beaches, wineries, distilleries, and outdoor adventures. It's stylish and modern and looks out over 14 acres of scenic barn, pasture, and woods. It has a great setup if you want to shop for groceries to make dinner at home or there are great local dining options if you don't.
We recommend checking out Peasant's Pantry for breakfast, lunch, and take-home options, Susan's for dinner, and Infusco for a caffeine jolt.
This awesome glampsite in Buchanan, MI, is just over an hour outside of Chicago for those who need to get away from it all, and fast! With various glamping options from an authentic log cabin to major luxe-living in the cottages that include beds, bathrooms with showers, full kitchens, cable TV, and air conditioning, you can pick your family’s level of outdoorsy-ness when you book your trip. Although the log cabin doesn’t have a kitchen or bathroom like in 1835 when it was built, it’s the most popular rental onsite so grab it while you can. They take reservations up to a year in advance.
The waterpark capital of the world has 3,200 campsites (really!). Start at the KOA Wisconsin Dells which, because of its friendly, hands-on owners, makes campers feel they are being hosted at a mom-and-pop. Located just a mile or so north of downtown, you are close to the Dells action (mini golf, arcades, and more) but remote enough to bask in the company of tall trees and the winding Wisconsin River.
Onsite there is a heated pool with a splash pad, free Wi-Fi, fun-cycle rentals, a game room and nightly outdoor family movies during the summer months.
Park your camper at a long, level pull-thru with a patio and cable TV hookup; or relax on a beautiful, shaded RV site. Camping cabins and deluxe cabins are equipped with AC/heat. Visitors love the trees, immaculate restrooms with showers, and full-sized propane grills.
Door County Cabins at Plum Bottom
Chicagoans might think of Door County as a summer retreat, but don't discount this area for a winter escape. Not as many shops are open and you won't be lounging at the beach, but the much smaller crowd has its benefits. You can still enjoy many of the shops in the small towns that dot Door County, as well as many taprooms, wineries, and distilleries open for tastings. The lake views and landscape are much different in the winter months, but no less beautiful.
Door County Cabins at Plum Bottom offers three different sleeping options in Egg Harbor, a cabin, a cottage, and a treehouse. When in Egg Harbor, be sure to stop into Big Easy for fresh beignets that will make you feel like you woke up in New Orleans.
Oh, man. This place is adorable. Just over two hours away in Alvin, IL, is The Has Bin. What used to be a grain bin is now an adorable bed & breakfast with a prepared breakfast included in your stay. It's great for train lovers because there's a train that runs directly behind the bin with great views from the upper back deck. The bedroom is located in a loft with access to a beautiful deck. Bring s'mores supplies to enjoy the firepit and scenic farm.
Starved Rock is about as rocky as Illinois gets and is characterized by sandstone rock formations, 18 canyons, waterfalls, and views of the Illinois River. You'll love walking in the quiet forest, home to deer, birds, squirrels, and rabbits. Plus, tons of beautiful wildflowers bloom all around you during warmer months. One benefit of a cold-weather visit is a chance to see the thousands of Eagles that migrate yearly from Canada.
The Civilian Conservator Corps built the log cabins you'll find at Starved Rock in 1930. The knotty pine paneling and charm will take you back to simpler times, nestled under towering pines and century-old oaks.
With play equipment and character meet-and-greets—all against the backdrop of unspoiled Northern Illinois—a trip to Jellystone is more like a theme-park vacay that incidentally includes camping.
Mini golf, hayrides, arts and crafts, outdoor movies, a playground, numerous pools (including one just for kiddies), a game room, bonfires, and appearances by the furry bear character clan shouldn’t be missed.
Tent sites are available with or without electricity and less rustic cabins are available for rental. This site is open seasonally, from mid-April to mid-October, so keep it on your list for planning spring vacations.
Kick it Little House on the Prairie-style at Kinnikinnick Farm where you can glamp on a real working farm. Only an hour-and-a-half northwest of Chicago, the farm-stay program will have your kids picking eggs, feeding pigs, and milking goats. The accommodations are a cross between a log cabin and a classic tent with running water and an insulated chest that functions as a refrigerator. You’ll have to fend without electricity during your visit but with so many fun farm-centric activities, we’re guessing your kids won’t even notice.
This spot is available mid-May to mid-October and it's recommended you book early, as spots fill quickly.

Three hours away in Bloomingdale, IN, you'll find Turkey Run State Park. Trails wind through ravines, sandstone gorges, and exposed bedrock, accessed by an unbelievable suspension bridge. This is truly one of the Midwest's natural wonders, best seen on horseback or canoe. Flowing through the heart of the park, scenic Sugar Creek is great for beginning paddlers.
Fill your days with hiking, horseback riding and canoeing, fishing, and a swimming pool when the weather allows. You'll find campsites with electrical hookups and modern restrooms with showers. Cabins and cabin rooms are available through the Turkey Run Inn.

For the adventurous group head to Northern BC from November through March for a chance to see the aurora borealis and drive on parts of the historic Alaska Highway. Fancy a downhill shred? BC’s 13 major ski resorts are waiting along with snowshoeing routes, cross-country ski tracks, and trails for wintery walks. Tofino is known for surfing and in the winter its storm watching is truly epic. Haida Gwaii islands are a special place where kids can learn about the local culture and the people who have been stewards of the place since time immemorial. Engage with locals and explore the Haida Heritage Centre and Haida Gwaii Museum.
If your group loves food booths, entertainment, and mingling with merrymakers than check out these festivals and book your trip accordingly. The Rossland Winter Carnival January 27–29, 2023 is Canada’s longest running winter carnival. Learn to luge, sip a beverage at an ice palace, and watch the signature bobsled race. The High On Ice Winter Festival February 17-20, 2023 in Fort St. John boasts intricate ice carvings, winter sports (hello, hockey), and horse-drawn sleigh rides. Wine country calls. Okanagan’s oldest community hosts hundreds of events at the Vernon Winter Carnival February 3-12, 2023. Sip and taste, join a guided snowshoe tour, or have an aerial view from one of the many brightly-colored hot air balloons that float in the sky during the festival. For something brag-worthy, head to the Cariboo region for the annual Sled Dog Mail Run from February 24-26, 2023. These competing sled dog teams become official Canada Post mail carriers during the race. How cool is that?

Take a picnic to Cape Disappointment, weather permitting. It’s one of the most impressive state parks in Washington. The site overlooks the confluence of the world’s largest ocean and the West’s largest river. Walk in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark, see an installation, and gaze upon the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast. From there, active families can hike trails to another lighthouse, or bring bikes and ride the Discovery Trail. We recommend bundling up to watch the sunsets by the interpretive center. You just might see a bald eagle swoop overhead while the sun plunges into the Pacific. When the storm clouds roll in, head to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Both have hands-on displays and activities to engage young ones and oldsters alike.
Where to Stay Stay at the Salt Hotel & Pub. Salt is delicious and offers little tummies grilled cheese and chicken strips while adults sip on craft cocktails. Adrift Hotel slightly further afield has a wonderful heated pool, beach views, and fabulous service. If your family happens to be 18-plus we can’t say enough about At The Helm, a boutique hotel with incredible food right on the marina of Ilwaco. Cue the New England setting and romantic movie score as soon as you check in.
Winter Play Is it Suncadia or Snow-cadia? This family-favorite resort is a top spot for winter sports, and it’s just a short drive from Seattle. In fact, Suncadia has so many activities and fun there is no way a group can do it all. If you’re up to the challenge…better start checking off that list now. Rent a snowmobile or cross-country skis and hit the blustery trails. Nelson Farm is where you’ll find winter axe throwing for budding lumberjacks, winter archery, winter tie-dye classes, and more snow than your little city dwellers will know what to do with. It’s also the place to wow your kiddos when they see the elk herds passing through. For more traditional winter wonderland adventures Suncadia offers skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and sleigh rides. December hosts Santa’s Workshop with more arts and crafts than at the North Pole, and the Intro to Winter Fly Fishing class is one of a plethora of unique outdoor experiences.

Dine with a view of the Cascades from Portals Restaurant or of the golf course from The Stovehouse. Peruse the town, Trails End bookstore is a must. Then eat at Old Schoolhouse Brewery by the river or at the renowned East 20 Pizza. Afterwards, go ice skating at the Winthrop Ice Rink. The NHL regulation ice hosts a variety of events—like free skate, figure skating, and hockey—and the 6,000-square-foot changing room has rentals, hot showers, and even ping pong tables.
Where to Stay Stay at Sun Mountain Lodge, the largest cross-country skiing resort in the country, with 60 kilometers of meticulously groomed trails just outside your resort room door. Their ski shop is open and there is snow. The Methow Valley Trails are groomed, and many are already open. Strap on those skinny skis (rentals available on-site) and get out there. After the snow angels are made, grab some hot cocoa and plan the day. Choose from snowshoeing, sledding, on-site sleigh rides, Alti Hok (a cool import from Northwest China), and downhill skiing at Loup Loup Ski Bowl. Don’t forget to check for Sun Mountain Lodge’s game room where you’ll find ping pong, foosball, and pool tables for indoor amusement. For an in-town experience, hunker down in a cozy cabin at Rivers Edge Resort.
Winter Play Sleigh bells ring, are you listenin’? Leavenworth should be on every Seattle family’s winter travel list, with not one, but three different sleigh ride offerings. Leavenworth dazzles with half a million lights that will be turned on nightly through December 24th. Aptly named Christmastown, the village houses a Nutcracker Museum, themed gift stores, a gingerbread house exhibition, carolers, festive outdoor restaurants, and a litany of libations for Littles and their parents. Don’t forget the sweets. New to town, Crepe Café Sisters offers savory and sweet mouth-watering crepes, or celebrate the season with baked yummies at The Gingerbread Factory.
With an average of 89 inches of snow every year, you’re pretty much guaranteed to enjoy the white stuff during your visit. Snow permitting, the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club has a vast array of sports for your amusement, including the only ski jumping facility on the West Coast and the uber popular tubing hill. They also host snowshoeing, sledding, and snow biking. One notable excursion is the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm, open year-round. The look on the children’s faces when they see a reindeer for the first time is pure wonder.
Where to Stay After all the excitement, there is no better place to get your hygge vibe on than Sleeping Lady Resort. Dinner is a delicious seasonal chef’s menu with locally sourced ingredients, or grab quick snacks at O’Grady’s before taking a self-guided art walk around the property, listening to Icicle Creek gurgling nearby. For beds close to the twinkling lights of town, check into Bavarian Lodge or Icicle Village Resort.
Winter Play The best time to visit the San Juan Islands is whenever you can get there. This “off-season” destination is a quiet haven for families looking to connect with nature and each other. Hiking, mountain biking, storm watching, warm fireside drinks and games, and the “bustling” Eastsound are all a draw for families visiting the island. After a seaside drive, stop at family-friendly Orcas Island Winery set outdoors by a beautiful barn—it makes for a picturesque sip and savor. Take a hike up Mount Constitution, the highest point in the San Juans, for mind-blowing views. The Madrona Bar & Grill has great fish options, Mijitas Mexican take-out is a delicious win-win for the fam, and Brown Bear Baking is a staple for a quick sweet treat or sandwich. New notable restaurants—Norbu’s in the Orcas Hotel and Monti, a Roman-inspired eatery in downtown Eastsound. Shopping highlights include Forest Ceramic Gallery, Wanderlust + Wildhearts, and Island Thyme, although any boutique is sure to please.

Explore the secret garden in back for ball games and the private lawn deck across the street for sunset and avian viewing. Consider requesting the newer addition cabins across from the main hotel with unparalleled views. Another great option is Doe Bay Resort and Retreat, well-known for its eco-friendly ethos. Guests can partake in guided ecology hikes with general manager River Augenstein. Afterall, it’s never too early to get the kids interested in the environment and the outdoors.
Winter Play Olympic athletes, celeb sightings, and chic ski-style all help create of the mystique of Sun Valley. No wonder Seattle families have had a long love affair with this area. The snow-covered mountain provides breathless thrills with 3,400 vertical feet and over 2,000 acres of varied terrain, plus a recent 380-acre skiing expansion on Bald Mountain. The Cold Springs lift has been replaced by an express quad lift. Kids can mix it up with sledding, snowmobiling, ice biking, or cross-country skiing. Consider enrolling them in SnowSports School to improve those skills. Guests enjoy even more varied terrain this season with an additional 79 acres of gladed skiing made possible by the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project, part of the Healthy Forest Initiative.
For equipment rentals look no farther than Ski Butlers, the easiest ski and snowboard rental process in town. The ice skating rink is always a highlight, and afterwards head to Duchin Lounge for an après-ski adult bevvie.
Non-ski adventures abound as well. Try Dark Sky Watching at the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, take a stroll on the Wood River Trail, a 20-plus-mile paved, multi-use, year-round path. The Sun Valley Culinary institute offers year-round culinary classes and experiences for all palates and ages.

Hood Railroad runs a special Christmas Train every year throughout the season.
Or turn your free-range kids loose at the Children’s Park at 9th and Eugene, or Waterfront Park on the river. The Children’s Park is a wild playground obstacle course of wood, with twists and turns, turrets and tire swings, sand and slides. Waterfront Park lets the kids climb, spin, and generally run amok—set against a stunning river tableau.
Mount Hood is Oregon’s iconic peak, and Timberline Lodge makes a perfect home base for your family weekend getaway this winter. Just an hour-and-a-half from Portland, let the snowshoe adventures begin. Rent on the mountain or gear up back in Portland at your favorite outdoor store. Then try out the 3/4-mile trail above the lodge for stunning views. It’s not exactly easy going—the kids should be prepared for a hike. Afterwards, scurry back to the lodge to warm up with a heated outdoor pool, game room, and lending library. Perfect weekend.
One hour south of Portland, Salem has a whole new world of winter fun for kids--making it an awesome winter road trip for Portland families. Stay a few days to take advantage of nearby day trips like a hike in Silver Falls State Park. In Salem, spend some time wandering around the Oregon Garden, an 80-acre botanical paradise. The whole family will learn new things with a visit to the historic state capitol, although portions are closed until 2025.
After the history lesson turn them loose at the beautiful Riverfront Park on the Willamette River. It houses a gorgeous (indoor) carousel where Santa Claus is rumored to hang out. Older kids will appreciate Salem walking tours, including the exquisite Deepwood Museum & Gardens. On the way out of town fill them up with milkshakes, burgers, and fries at the northernmost In-N-Out Burger, just off I-5 in nearby Keizer. Warning: lifelong In-N-Out addiction is real.
With countless opportunities for mountain biking, rafting the Deschutes River, and beer-tasting at breweries, Bend is a beloved summer destination for PNWers of all ages. But substitute skiing for biking, and a sleigh ride for rafting, and you’ve got the perfect place for a family-friendly winter excursion. Got some little skiers in tow? Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort features 3,700 acres of lift-accessible terrain, a free beginner chair lift, the Snowblast Tubing Park and a deal that allows children 12 and under to ski for free, with the advance purchase of a three-day adult lift ticket.
Planning to visit Bend during the holidays? A horse-drawn sleigh ride will whisk the fam along the Deschutes River at the Sunriver Resort, just 17 miles south. Hungry? Take the kids to the Old Mill District, with a plethora of tot-tested tasty treats. Thirsty? There’s a long list of Bend breweries that are kid-friendly and winter-friendly, with heaters, firepits, games, and snacks, including Crux Fermentation Project, Bend Brewing Company, and Sunriver Brewing‘s Galveston Pub in Bend.
Movie buffs, head to Astoria—a fantastic winter weekend getaway that's just two hours west of Portland—to re-trace the steps of The Goonies. If you haven’t seen the film a million times already, be sure to re-live it with the kids before you get to town. Do the “Truffle Shuffle” and you could be in luck—at press time the world famous Goonies House at 368 38th St. has re-opened to visitors. Or bring a cool $1.7 million and buy the whole house. Re-create the jailbreak at the Oregon Film Museum, a great cold-weather retreat for the whole family. The picture-perfect Victorian town has also served as the location for Kindergarten Cop, Short Circuit, and many more kid flicks.
Once you’re done exploring outside, try one of Astoria’s family-friendly breweries like Buoy Beer, which offers up a kids’ menu along with floor-to-ceiling windows for a fantastic view.
About three hours southeast of Portland in the shadow of Black Butte and the Three Sisters, the quaint town of Sisters reminds locals of what Bend was like years ago. This winter road trip will make you feel like you’re a world away, with old-fashioned storefronts and the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Your family can ride horses or cross-country ski at Black Butte Ranch, or hole up with board games, popcorn, and movies in a Camp Sherman cabin. Sisters is also a great launching pad for ski areas like Mt. Bachelor and HooDoo.
Like snowbirds heading south, the majestic gray whales migrate to the warmer waters of Baja California every winter. Depoe Bay is the place to catch a glimpse of these titans of the sea, and a great family getaway near Portland. Like anyone headed on vacation, they’re in bit of a hurry to get where they’re going and don’t lollygag around too much, but about 30 whales pass by whale watching sites each hour. During peak times (mid-December to mid-January, and again starting mid-February) there are multiple spots from Brookings to Astoria to help you sight these intrepid travelers. Bring your binoculars, warm clothes, and a little patience, and you might catch a glimpse. If not, there’s always storm watching, snuggling, relaxing, and tide pooling.
Just like Depoe Bay, over 20,000 gray whales—nearly 30 each hour—migrate south along the coast to reach their breeding grounds in Mexico. The best spots for viewing the magnificent creatures are listed here. You can grab a nearby perch at the Neahkahnie Mountain Historic Marker on Highway 101 or Ecola State Park 18 miles north—you just might just catch a glimpse of a spout or a breach. Fancy something else after your whale of an adventure? The winter months are also a wonderful time for beachcombing at nearby Oswald West State Park, or scarfing down piping hot pizzas at Marzano’s Pizza Pie right in town.

Check in and get your wristbands which will be your way to access your room for the duration of your stay. Send the kids to grab a crêpe or scoop of gelato from the grab-and-go coffee shop in the lobby; they'll be delighted that they can access these treats as much as they want throughout their stay (as parents allow).
Royal Uno® has 540 rooms with amazing beach views where you can catch the sunrise over Cancún's turquoise waters. Upgrade your stay with an Uno Suite that has a king-size bed for parents and a living room with two Murphy beds for the kids. If the beachfront suite is available, definitely go for it as you'll get a balcony with a hammock to lounge in and enjoy the waves crashing. Kauai is the fourth largest island of the Hawaiian Islands, this under-the-radar tropical destination is also the most northwestern of the major islands, sits about 100 miles off the coast of Oahu, and is by far the most enchanting and relaxing. Kauai is a hidden gem–it feels like a world away even though it's just a six-hour, direct flight from LA. You can also reach Kauai via Seattle, Portland, San Diego and San Francisco non-stop.
What also makes this island so special—it's a melting pot of cultures. There are strong influences felt all over the island—from Japan, China, and the Philippines to even Portuguese influences, there's so much to experience and taste once you get here. Don't miss trying poi—a traditional staple of Hawaiian culture, is a gluten-free, viscous dish made from taro. And of course, don't miss out on ube—a purple yam originally from the Philippines. Unlike traditional sweet potatoes that we know in the states, ube is sweeter and has a slightly nutty, vanilla taste making it great ingredient in desserts, pancakes, malasadas and coffee drinks.

1. The Sheraton Kauai Resort's Intimate, Low-Key Yet Luxe Vibe
Much like Goldilocks in the The Three Bears, here's nothing harder to nail than a resort trying to be everything, to everyone, yet kudos to the Sheraton Kauai Resort for getting the vibe here just right.
Thanks to a recent renovation, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the spaces are airy, clean, modern and inviting. Add to that, little nooks and crannies tucked along the property that allows for privacy and feels like you have the place to yourself. With 314 rooms (2 of them suites), the size of the resort is manageable (unlike some resorts that feel like you walk for days). The hotel rooms are also spacious, modern and clean. And the way the resort is situated, you'll get a glorious ocean view, pool view or luxe garden view—all with patios or balconies.
The added bonus of a smaller resort? You can feel comfortable letting your kids wander off to the game room or explore the grounds while you sit and enjoy a drink—and the view.
2. Zero-Entry Pool & Splash Area for Little Kids
The main pool and the little kid's splash pool are connected—clutch if you have kids that are different ages. With no lifeguard on duty, two separate pools are a parent's nightmare but this ocean-front water feature connects the two, making keeping an eye on everyone, super easy.
Add to that, the little kid's pool is zero entry with splashing water features, including a waterfall (thanks to the infinity-edge of the big kid pool and is where the two pools connect)— little kids will adore splashing around.
3. Sheraton Kauai's Food Is Top Notch
Resort food can run its course fairly quickly but after five days, we still hadn't had our fill. Trust us when we say that with four restaurants on the property, we were a little nervous that we'd get food-bored or not have enough options—especially with a picky-eater in tow. Thankfully, that was not the case. The food options were varied and perfectly executed and we walked away feeling satisfied by every meal. Highlights include:
First Light Coffee and Juice Bar: Open as early as 5:30 a.m. (an early-morning miracle if you are still waking up in your time zone), you'll find custom-made coffee drinks as well as pastries and sandwiches. A must-order? The ube latte—either iced or hot.
Daybreak Restaurant: If you want a sit-down breakfast, here you can get a breakfast buffet or order food a la carte. The Acai bowl and the English muffin sandwich were big hits. Kids with a sweet tooth will love the ube pancakes—they come with ube-white chocolate syrup, macadamia nuts, and caramelized bananas.
The Crooked Surf: This poolside spot with ocean views is where you can get drinks, snacks and lunch. The kids loved the beef sliders and we loved the Crooked Surf Tacos—fish tacos that were lightly battered and hit the spot more than once during our stay.
Moa Moa Hawaiian Fish House: For a memorable, upscale dining experience that is still kid-friendly, head to Moa Moa. Pacific Island cuisine is on the menu with mussels, and market fish are just some of the highlights. If you don't eschew garlic, order the Kauai Garlic Prawns on a bed of linguini pasta—quite possibly the best garlic shrimp dish we ever had.
New for the resort, and a draw for the area, is the on-site Luau Ka Hikina. The Sheraton Kauai Resort recenlty built an ocean-view, open-air event pavilion, Halau Ho'okipa, to host special performances during the week that celebrates Hawaiian and Polynesian history. It is a festive experience, beginning with a meet-and-greet with the dancers and musicians—you're even welcome to try swinging poi balls (much harder than it looks!) and try your hand at drumming on Tahitian drums. A torch-lighting ceremony opens the show, and then the highlight, of course, has got to be seeing the ancient hula perform alongside award-winning singer Leilani Rivera Low.
The buffet-style dinner (included with the price) offers a variety of local favorites—including Mahi Mahi, Kalua Pork, Huli Huli Chicken, and poi— that island staple we mentioned above—and definitely a must-try. As the emcee said, it's an acquired taste for those who didn't grow up eating it, but our group gave it two thumbs up.

Insider Tip: After the luau, head back to the pool some night swimming! The torches are lit, the fire tables are going and it's magical to swim under the stars.
5. The Location of the Sheraton Kauai Resort Can't Be Beat
The resort is located equidistant from the two main towns on the island, Princeville and Poipu. From here, you can explore all the activities like hikes, waterfalls, and more—all within an hour to an 1.5 drive from the hotel. See below for the top ten activities to do in Kauai with kids.
Also worth noting, there's the shopping center called Coconut Market less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Here you'll find Island Country Market that doubles as a grocer and deli shop. There are also various souvenir shops, more restaurants (we recommend checking out the Bobby V's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria and Chicken in a Barrel BBQ), a courtyard where you can hear live music as well as a farmer's market that pops up during the week.
6. Complimentary Bikes & Order Ahead Picnic Lunches
Complimentary cruiser bikes await guests near the lobby—simply sign them out at the bellman desk and then explore the 8-mile oceanfront bike path that connects to the town of Kapa'a. Want to make your exploration of the island by bike even more memorable? Order one of their Picnic Series at the Concierge. There are various options, starting at $35 per person (including options for kids called the Keiki Picnic Party), and when you're ready for your ride, strap on the back pack and out you go. Stop along the coast and set up your picnic lunch along the way.
Good to Know: The bikes are typically first-come, first-serve although if you reserve a picnic lunch ahead of time, they'll hold your bikes for you. They also have bikes for kids so everyone in the family can ride together.
Filled with pool tables, foosball, table shuffleboard, and arcade games, rather than be sequestered off to the back of the building in a dark room, this game room is open-air and right next to the pool area. In the grassy area, there's also lawn games—from lawn Jenga and corn hole to giant Connect Four, if you need a break from the pool, there are plenty of fun games and activities to keep you occupied. One of our favorite spots to chill? The beachside hammocks with ocean views while the kids play in the sand.
6. Arts & Crafts, Shave Ice & More Activities That Take Place on the Property
If the pool, beach, and game room aren't enough for active kids, there are a slew of locally-inspired activities that take place on the property, and rotates throughout the week. There's kite making, lei making, learn to hula and play the ukulele, coconut husking, a torch lighting ceremony, and a shaved ice cart that appears poolside everyday at 1 p.m. Refer to the website, postings in the elevator, and the weekly newsletter for the day's activities.
Before you think I'm going suggest you wake up early to catch the sunrise (I'm not), the three-hour time difference from the west coast of the US, more likely than not, means you and the kids will be up. Don't sit in your room though—grab a coffee from appropriately named First Light Coffee & Juice Bar place (order the ube latte) and head over to the beach to watch the sun rise. It's spectacular—and the kids can run around on the beach and grassy area while you have a moment of zen.
Speaking of channeling some island zen, complimentary yoga takes places on the beach-front grass during the week (more often during busier seasons). Yoga starts at 7 a.m. (not an issue if you still dealing with jet lag) and is a great way to start your day and channel those good-for-you island vibes.
10. Be Prepared —Your Kids Won't Want to Leave the Resort
Seriously not kidding—we left the resort to explore the island and after about two hours checking out waterfalls, beaches and a glorious tree tunnel—all my kids wanted to do was go back to the resort. It's so relaxing and chill at the Sheraton Kauai Resort—they had freedom to roam around, play lawn games or arcade games, had the choice between the pool and the beach, great food at their fingertips—what else could they ask for?
Good to Know: The beach does not have a lifeguard on duty—as always, be careful when playing in and near the ocean. This particular beach has a breakaway, making for milder waves but it's not a swimming beach or recommended to wander too far into the water. For swimming beaches, see below.
Besides lounging away at the resort? From low-key snorkeling in a protected lagoon that's perfect for small kids, to intense hikes that comes with a fair share of warning from the National Parks Department, there are so many family adventure travel options to fit your adventure level in Kauai—just fitting them all in will be the hardest part.
1. Kayak the Wailua River: Located under 10-minutes from the Sheraton Kauai Resort, in addition to kayaking the river, you can also paddle board. With Wailua Kayak & Canoe, you can choose a guided tour, or go on your own. They even have tri-kayaks to rent that fit two adults and one child.
2. Find a Waterfall: There are multiple noteworthy waterfalls on the island including probably the most famous one—Manawaiopuna Falls also known as Jurassic Falls thanks to the movie, Jurassic Park (only viewable via helicopter tour) but Wailua Falls (famous from the hit tv show Fantasy Island), and Opaekaa Falls are both close to the hotel and easily accessible. Both can be seen after parking and walking up to a viewing area—go early as it can get crowded and difficult to park.
3. Visit the Kauai Plantation Railway at Kilohana Plantation: Got a trainspotter on your hand? Head over to the Kilohana Plantation where you can be transported through 2.5 miles of crops like sugar cane and taro and learn about the history of the plantation plus get to feed some local animals like pigs, goats, sheep, and their friendly donkey named Stiney.
4. Snorkel at Baby Beach in Poipu: This protected cove is perfect for babies and little swimmers. Plus, there's ample parking nearby.
Good to Know: You'll end up driving through the Tree Tunnel—a 1-mile long gateway to Kauai’s South Shore that is made up of hundreds of Eucalyptus trees.
5. The Best Hikes in Kauai with Kids: Ranked as the best trail to hike in Kauai, the Kalalau Trail runs along the Na Pali coast and the first 2 miles free to access—the rest of the trail requires a permit (make reservations far in advance to avoid disappointment). Head the warnings on this hike—slippery rocks, potential stream crossings and other dangerous conditions make this hike better suited for older and more experienced hikers.
On the western side of the island is Waimea Canyon—the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, most experts recommend sticking to the Iliau Loop Trail if you have little kids. It's short and provides epic views—crucial for those short legs and attention spans. Insider Tip: Stop at JoJo's Shave Ice in Waimea on your way back to the hotel.
6. Sail the Kauai Coast: Various outfitters offer 1/2 cruises where you can head out onto the deep blue sea and take in the view of the Garden Island from the water.
7.Go Horseback Riding: For equine-minded adventures, you can choose to horseback ride along the bluffs, through the fields and past beaches. Depending on your comfort level, choose from 90 minute tours to five-hour long sojourns that include photo ops, swimming and epic views.
8. Try a Zip Line Adventure: Touted by Julian Cable-Treadwell, the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort Director of Marketing and Resort Manager, as the one island adventure most people skip but shouldn't, you and the family can get a bird's eye view of the island as you fly over lush forests and reservoir.
9. Go River Tubing: There are lots of places that offer river tubing (most of them are ages 5 & up)—the three-hour tour is fairly benign and gentle although it is worth noting there's a 1-mile dark tunnel for those that are claustrophobic or don't like dark spaces.
10. Taste the Best Doughnuts & Malasadas in Kauai: If you're in Princeville, hit up Holey Grail Donuts—not only a local Kauai fave but is quickly becoming an LA favorite thanks to their always busy pop-up at Culver City's Platform and Mar Vista Farmer's Market (PS: brick and mortar store are coming soon to Larchmont and Santa Monica).
Cable-Treadwell also alerted us to Kauai Bakery, located in the KuKui Grove Center just up the road from the hotel and serves malasadas—Portuguese doughnuts without a hole, filled with various flavors. We think they're even better than a typical doughnut—this yeast-leavened doughnut version is enriched with eggs, butter, and sometimes evaporated or fresh milk with a crispy outside and soft inside. Pick up the ube malasada (pictured above)—you won't be disappointed.
What You Need to Know about Rending a Car in Kauai
You'll need to rent a car to get around the island. If you don't need a car right away though, after arriving at Lihue Airport, we recommend taking a cab to the hotel. While there is such a thing as "island time," the car rental lines are long and extremely slow. It's a scene out of the movie Zootopia where the main character enters the DMV, only to discover, it's run by sloths. We rented from Thrifty and it took almost two hours to get our car.
The Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort is only 6.5 miles away from the airport—save your time (and your sanity) and skip the car rental when you first arrive. You can always take a cab back to the car rental place at a less busy time, or take Cable-Treadwell's recommendation and use the car rental company Turo—he said they have positive reviews from travelers.

This Airbnb rental on the Hood Canal has everything a PNW vacation home should. The large deck off the main level that overlooks a trickling stream, is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee and watch deer come to the water for a drink. The deck also features a large 6-person hot tub, that is perfect to soak your bones after a day of skiing or hiking.
