We’re in this together. We’re home. Why not make something good? Like cocktails for COVID-19 relief.

For every bottle of 21Seeds purchased in April through our online retail partner, we’ll be donating $1.21 to @River Fund, a nonprofit that for over 28 years has been helping families in crisis. The Backstory

Misty Carlyle

After founder Kat Hantas had her second child, for health reasons, she had to give up wine as her drink of choice. She wanted to find something she enjoyed just as much as wine, so Hantas started playing around with tequila, adding ingredients like orange, grapefruit, jalapeño and hibiscus—and created a clean and flavorful tequila. She began sharing with friends, and what came out of years of experimenting was 21 Seeds: Grapefruit Hibiscus, Valencia Orange and Cucumber Jalapeño tequila. Unlike other flavored tequilas on the market, the infused Blanco tequilas from 21 Seeds are not sugary or super sweet, they simply offer a clean beverage that's easy to drink.

According to Hantas, most people she speaks with at tastings are prepared to grimace, because, well, it's tequila. She explains to Forbes, “The minute they taste it, two things happen,” Hantas says. “The first is, they brace themselves like they’re going to experience harsh tequila, and then that grimace turns into this smile, and it’s almost like it’s a new category because they don’t know where to place this beverage in their heads.”

In true girl power fashion, 21 Seeds' tag line is #girlscalltheshots because once Hantas knew she had something special on her hands, she enlisted the help of her sister and her best friend to help make her passion project a marketable product. The trio traveled to the Mexican region of Jalisco and partnered with, get this, a mostly female-owned and run tequila factory. The rest is history.

The Product

Misty Carlyle

We tried out the infused tequilas, and true to Hantas' word, each one is light and flavorful enough to simply drink on ice with a splash of soda water. In other words, there's no need to fuss around with making a cocktail after dealing with dinner and bedtime routines—perfect for busy parents! The Valencia Orange is definitely the sweetest of the trio but makes a perfect margarita (a recipe for a skinny margarita, among other simple combos, comes with each bottle), the Grapefruit Hibiscus is light and smooth and can be made into a light drink with a bubly grapefruit or any other sparkling water, and the Cucumber Jalapeño, has just enough kick to make it the perfect base for a spicy margarita.

The Reviews

Misty Carlyle

Our tasting panel was curious to taste 21 Seeds— two of them had experience with flavored tequila, but not infused tequila. All three testers unanimously agreed that it wasn't what they had expected—much lighter in flavor and not overly sweet. One taster, who is on a low-carb diet plan, was excited to discover that while 21 Seeds offered more calories per serving, there were still fewer carbs. Another, who stays away from gluten, commented on the freshness of each tequila and how few ingredients were required to make a drink. The third tester wasn't convinced there would be anything that would make her willingly give up her glass of Sauvignon Blanc at the end of the day, and she was proven wrong. The end opinion? 21 Seeds is not your average tequila—it's better, and it's perfect for when you want to switch up your drink of choice.

69 Hilarious Memes That Moms Will Love

School is out for summer, and for millions of families that means an increase in extracurricular activities. Parents are busy mapping out the logistics of camps, practices, tournaments, and more, so any time savings are usually encouraged and taken.

Finding ways to prepare meals and snacks ahead of time presents a potential shortcut for hectic lifest‌yles, but healthy fare can sometimes seem burdensome or out of reach in favor of processed alternatives, which are often cheaper. It’s tempting to grab a box of prepackaged, processed snacks off the grocery shelf, but a little planning can actually help you save money in the long run—not to mention the real-life health benefits you can reap from eating fresh, high-quality food.

How We Got Here

The prevalence of processed foods in our pantries has been a shift many decades in the making, and many factors have combined to create it. Daily trips to the market for fresh produce have become weekly errands. To improve the sustainability of processed products, we’ve needed to produce foods that can survive the journey from factory to distribution warehouse to store shelf, where foods will sit for even more time.

To remain edible during the long wait from creation to consumption, processed foods are infused with preservatives such as sugar, sodium, and fat. Science has found that the downside is steep, and it’s well-known that eating too much of these nutrients can increase health risks. In generations past, we simply didn’t eat these types of foods like we do today, and we’re really feeling the detrimental impact in ourselves, our families, and our communities.

These are reasons enough to limit our consumption of processed foods, but they’re still staples in our kitchen and on the go, especially with our overloaded lifestyles. We all do so much. Whether as individuals or as families, schedules are packed morning, noon, and night. Trying to find the time to create nutrient-rich foods and snacks can seem like a barrier to the pace of life.

Budgets are also a factor in choosing processed foods. Inexpensive food is hard to pass up when looking at a lengthy grocery list. Processed foods are also easily accessible and on virtually every corner at retail and grocery stores, convenience stores, and pharmacies. Understanding how to access and create healthy meals and snacks that are affordable is a critical component to overcoming this challenge. Natural ingredients can be delicious, and once you include them in your cooking and lifestyle, the energy and enrichment you gain often outweigh hard-to-resist processed foods.

Quick and Better-for-You Alternatives

One easy way to combat the adverse effects of processed foods is by focusing on simple, fresh, nutritious options that won’t monopolize your time or break the bank. Knowing where to start can help get the ball rolling, so here are a few ideas that we like to share from our honey farm:

Berries. No doubt one of the most versatile foods, berries are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C. Toss a handful of blueberries over your cereal, whip up a bowl of balsamic strawberry salsa or mix together a variety of berries with a dollop of honey, and you’ve just added a kick of vitamins to a snack, dessert, or meal.

Yogurt. Most people turn to coffee for a midday pick-me-up. But what if I told you there’s a better option? Natural yogurt contains calcium, protein, and probiotics, which help boost energy. Throw in some berries, and the added fiber keeps those engines running even longer. Just make sure to read the labels, as some brands are loaded with added sugar.

Grapefruit. Sure, grapefruit may be seen as grandma’s meal of choice for breakfast—but the wise lady was onto something. For one, it’s packed with vitamins A and C. It’s also loaded with water. Grapefruit helps the body ward off many illnesses and aids in hydration. Instead of sprinkling grapefruit with sugar, try drizzling it with honey to boost its sweetness.

Smoothies. You’ve probably heard the saying “never drink your calories,” but I’d like to add a caveat: smoothies. Unlike juices, smoothies contain fiber to help fill you up. And you’ve got a vitamin-packed, grab-and-go snack if you choose nutrient-rich ingredients like dark, leafy greens; berries; squash; or protein powder.

Bagels. While not all bagels are healthy, those of the whole-grain variety can provide you with nearly one-third of your recommended daily intake of fiber. You can build an even better version by topping your bagel with nut butter, bananas, and a bit of honey for a truly delicious energy-boosting snack or meal.

Convenience will always be a big thing with food choice, and each one of these alternatives to processed foods provides that—plus many of the vital nutrients your body needs. As with anything in life, it’s all in the preparation. If you plan ahead and add healthier food options in your kitchen, you’ll find yourself gravitating away from those easy-to-choose processed foods.

Making these changes don’t have to be extreme shifts in your lifestyle. It doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing commitment. Start small! Find easy recipes for meals at home and on the go through a blog that you enjoy or an influencer who connects to your cooking preferences and lifestyle. Begin to make easy substitutions and slowly make changes that will be lasting in your house.

If you slip up one day, week or month, don’t consider it a failure. This is a lifetime journey, and you can expect bumps along the way. Just give yourself a little grace and get back to those healthy choices when you can. This summer, power those activities and long days through natural food and see the difference it can make in yourself and your family.

Nathan Sheets, the CEO and chief steward of Nature Nate’s Honey Co., embarked on a mission to nourish lives by creating high-quality products for a higher purpose. Nathan has also turned his entrepreneurial spirit to contributing to communities in need through a “give to grow” business.

Primary Is Having an Epic Warehouse Sale, but You’ll Need to Act Fast

Getting pregnant doesn’t always come easily for some women and couples, leading them to try everything from oysters and eggs to sunflower seeds and grapefruit just to conceive. A newly-released diet for fertility may have answers—and they’re based in science instead of old Facebook Groups’ tales.

Harvard School of Public Health’s Drs. Jorge Chavarro and Walter Willet recently released a nutrition-based book, The Fertility Diet: Groundbreaking Research Reveals Natural Ways to Boost Ovulation and Improve Your Chances of Getting Pregnant. So what do these Harvard docs have to say about eating to conceive?

photo: Freestocks.org via Pexels

The pair reviewed the diets of over 18,000 women. Not so surprisingly, they found that women with better quality diets, those who were more active and those who didn’t smoke were more likely to get pregnant. Chavarro and Willet aren’t only experts who believe that healthy eating is tied to fertility.

In an interview with CNN, Dr. Marie Menke, assistant professor and director of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, said, “If you are going to be searching for a fertility diet, this is a good place to start. Research shows an association between this dietary pattern and a reduced risk of infertility in some women.”

When it comes to specifics, Chavarro and Willet recommend avoiding trans fats, using unsaturated vegetable oils (such as olive oil), eating vegetable protein, choosing whole grains, drinking one glass of whole milk a day, getting iron from fruits and veggies and aiming for a healthy weight. Along with diet, the doctors also suggest getting some physical activity (but not overdoing it) and if you smoke—quit right now.

Soda is out and those colorful cans of sparkling water are totally in, but if that LaCroix habit is putting a dent in your budget, there’s some good news. The Kirkland line of flavored sparkling water at Costco has gotten some new additions and they look and taste very familiar.

Costco just added three new flavors to its Kirkland brand sparkling water. The new additions include Grapefruit (known in LaCroix-speak as Pamplemousse), Lime and Lemon. Besides mimicking three of LaCroix’s most popular flavors, the new cans are nearly identical to their pricier counterparts.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl7C3rxlod0/?taken-by=thecostcoconnoisseur

The Costco versions will save you 33 percent as blogger The Costco Connoisseur points out. A 32-pack of the Kirkland brand sells for $7.49, while a pack of LaCroix costs $7.99 and only comes with 24 cans in a package.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BlyfK9ClHe3/?taken-by=thecostcoconnoisseur

The three new Kirkland flavors join three tasty flavors already for sale at Costco: black raspberry, orange mango and kiwi strawberry. Although good, these flavors didn’t completely match what LaCroix has to offer. If you’re thirsty for a bargain, Costco is totally your best bet for a LaCroix look- and taste-alike.

Costco Is Making a Pretty Huge Change & Shoppers Aren’t Having it

If you feel like you’re out of the loop about what’s hot and what’s not on the Seattle food scene then don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Our friends at Seattle Magazine have dug up 6 food trends from cocktails to pickles that will leave your mouth watering and your stomach growling. They’ve uncovered the best of the best and even where in Seattle to find them!

Booze of the Moment: Tequila

Don’t be like me. It took me years to recover from cheap-tequila-drenched trips to Mexico in college. And so I came late to the nuanced aromas of reposado, and I’m slowly exploring the smoky flavors of good anejo (they are pricey, after all). All over town, bartenders are harnessing the subtle smoke and floral, honeyed flavors of tequila to create inspired cocktails that celebrate the spirit.

But first, a primer: All tequilas are made from the blue agave plant (a succulent that grows in Mexico), but from there, the spirit can go in several directions depending on distillation and aging methods. Tequila blanco (also called silver or white; look for labels that specify “100 percent agave”) is clear and offers the purest agave flavor.

It’s the most common tequila in mixed drinks like margaritas. Reposado tequila is aged in oak for as long as a year, and therefore takes on a very light amber tinge and a light smoke from the wood. Anejo tequila is aged longer in wood, with a complex nose of spice and smoke. Like a good Scotch, anejo tequila is generally sipped rather than mixed. Curious? Do a tequila tasting at Barrio: three shot pours (one each of blanco, reposado, anejo; $22–$90). Here, I’ve chosen cocktails from three spots that use each of the different types of tequila to great effect.

Blanco: Moshi Moshi bartender Erik Carlson infuses tequila with shishito peppers, then muddles it with mezcal, cucumber, lime, grapefruit, agave and orange zest to create Sierra Madre’s Pride. ($12; Ballard, 5324 Ballard Ave. NW; 206.971.7424; moremoshi.com)

Reposado: At Liberty, the Penicillina will do more than go down easy—it might help to cure your November sniffles. With just-squeezed lemon juice, agave and fresh ginger, it’s practically good for you. ($8; Capitol Hill, 517 15th Ave. E; 206.323.9898; libertybars.com)

Anejo: At The Walrus and the Carpenter, the deep, smoky flavors of anejo tequila are enhanced by Cynar, Averna, bitters and especially the Laphroaig Scotch rinse in the Bearded Lady cocktail. ($9; Ballard, 4743 Ballard Ave. NW; 206.395.9227; thewalrusbar.com)
