Who doesn’t love the Bavarian town of Leavenworth? With tons of shops and things to do, it’s a hit with everyone and there really isn’t a bad time to visit, although if you are not a fan of crowds you’ll want to avoid staying during the weekend. Even so, we found a perfect space that is just far enough from downtown (about 10 minutes) that you’ll feel as if you’re away from it all. This 4,000 square foot with “Gemini Lodge” sits on 12 private acres. The three levels feature four bedrooms and three bathrooms, an amazing kitchen and a dining room with French doors that lead out to the wrap around deck with a view of the mountains. Play in the pool, soak in the hot tub and enjoy an outdoor barbecue when the day is done. This log cabin also features a spiral staircase, a beautiful fireplace, flat screen TV and even a foosball table upstairs.
Just a short ferry boat ride will get you to this home away from home, but you’ll feel as if you’re a lot farther away. This Victorian-styled home (with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms) is located at the end of a dead end street, so your kids can make as much noise as they want in the pool and practically nobody will hear them! And you won’t care either since you’ll be engrossed looking out at the fantastic view of Port Gamble Bay from one of the house’s two balconies. After everyone dries off, roast s'mores over the fire pit and watch the sunset. We love that the living room is set up for “movie night” and there is a game room with a vintage, tabletop video game. A Smithsonian affiliate, the museum also offers visiting exhibitions and a wide range of programs for families and kids.
Memorabilia on display in the Central Florida Railroad Museum includes historic photographs (including an extensive collection of Tavares & Gulf Railroad photographs from its early steam era until its last run), lanterns, locks and keys, telephones, telegraphs, signs, stoves, tools, furniture, timetables, dining car china and silver, tinware, marker lights, ticket punches, lamps, uniforms, locomotive bells and whistles, a 1938 Fairmont motorcar, and a velocipede hand car. Outside, the former Clinchfield caboose #1073, a three-head interlocking signal from the former ACL-SAL junction in Plant City, a set of narrow-gauge wheels and several switch stands and crossing signals are displayed.

The Mennello features American art of all genres and is home to a permanent collection of paintings by "primitive" artist Earl Cunningham. Outside, a lakeside sculpture garden is where the Mennello hosts the annual Indie Folk Fest, held the second week in February. Afternoon: While you can pick up lunch in the Aquarium's cafe, or at Googie Burger in Centennial Olympic Park, we recommend heading east out of downtown to Ponce City Market—Atlanta's newest urban re-development that packs a 1-2 punch with gourmet food stalls, as well as access to the Eastside BeltLine. Keep heading east on Ponce until you reach Fernbank Museum of Natural History, where you can chill out in the giant theatre, explore the dinosaurs, or run through Wildwoods, Fernbank's newest outdoor exploration-scape.
Insider Tip: Plan to visit the Aquarium first, because there's nothing quite like starting your day with the manta rays and belugas (plus, it gets a lot of visitors throughout the year, and afternoons are always hopping).
Don't Forget: Centennial Olympic Park and the entire downtown area around it was designed with pedestrians in mind. All of the attractions downtown have plenty of stroller parking inside, and you can cut through the park—instead of walk along the busier roads at its perimeter—making it a piece of cake to navigate from destination to destination.
Holiday Happenings: Centennial Olympic Park is home to one of Atlanta's favorite outdoor ice skating rinks during the holidays, and with thousands of twinkling lights decorating light poles and tree branches, it's one of the best places in the city to get in the holiday spirit.

Day 2: Midtown to Buckhead

Morning: Start your second day in Atlanta at Piedmont Park, where you'll find fresh produce, local goods, and weekly entertainment. Be sure to hit the Noguchi Playscape near 10th and Piedmont—a playground designed by one of the 20th Century's most prominent sculptors—and the Legacy Fountain splash pad, features more than 70 jets, reaching up to 30 feet in the air with LED-lighting (count on days often as late as December to be warm enough to take off your shoes and enjoy the water). Then, head to the adjacent Atlanta Botanical Garden for lunch (kid-friendly cafes are scattered throughout) and a visit to the newly renovated Children's Garden.
Afternoon: Take a short walk (or drive) through one of Atlanta's most historic neighborhoods—Ansley Park—to reach the Center for Puppetry Arts and the Worlds of Puppetry Museum. After catching a performance, head upstairs to make your own puppets (supplies are provided and are part of your ticket fee). Afterward, head north on Peachtree Street to Buckhead, where you'll find the Atlanta History Center and Smith Family Farm to explore, before capping off your day with a trip to LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Phipps Mall.
Insider Tip: If you're in the mood for some true Atlanta flavor, take a detour to The Varsity, an iconic drive-in near 10th and Spring St., where you'd better be ready to answer "What'll ya have?"
Don't Forget: Both the Legacy Fountain and the Children's Garden have splash pad features (the Children's Garden's shuts down during winter months), so be sure to pack a change of clothes for the kiddos!

After coming down from the trees, head to the river for a hike to the Chattahoochee River—only minutes from the bustle of the city but as serene as any you'd find in the countryside.
Afternoon: With plenty of fresh air under your belt, head to The Battery Atlanta at Truist Park, the new home of the Atlanta Braves. Whether it's baseball season or not, The Battery offers an excellent selection of family friendly dining options, a splash pad, and pedestrian-friendly storefronts to explore. If you're visiting during a home game, be sure and grab tickets, because the inside of the Stadium is perfect for traveling fams and locals alike.There's a kids zone complete with zip line, a climbing wall, carnival games and 11 (yes, that's right, 11) family restrooms!

The golden state’s capital flies under the radar when compared to tourist hot spots like San Francisco and Los Angeles, but there’s plenty of fun to be had year-round at bargain prices.
What to Do The capitol building itself is rich in history and architectural splendor, you can take a free tour and then wander the urban green space known as Capitol Park. The city proudly claims to be America’s Farm to Fork capital and there are dozens of free farmers markets that showcase over 8000 acres of boutique farms that flourish in the surrounding counties. Old Town Sacramento, a 28-acre State Historical Park, is a peek into the past, with old buildings from the Gold Rush era still intact and housing everything from restaurants to wacky gift shops and the free Wells Fargo History Museum. Rent a bike and explore the American River on the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail—over 32 miles of pathway that goes from Discovery Park to Folsom Lake.
Where to Stay The Hilton Garden Inn is just a few minutes away from downtown—which means cheaper rates. It offers adjoining rooms for families of more than four. It also has an outdoor pool that is kept warm well into the chilly winter months.
This small town in northwestern Wyoming outside of Yellowstone National Park offers an authentic Western experience befitting a town that was founded by a legend, Buffalo Bill Cody. Many travelers visit the town as a prelude to a trip to the world’s first national park.
What to Do Summer-season visitors will find an array of affordable fun, including free adventures like watching the antics of the Wild Bunch, who perform six nights a week in front of the Irma Hotel, the heart of the town. Built by Buffalo Bill and named for his daughter, visitors should take a look at the room-long Cherrywood bar in the dining room, a gift from England’s Queen Victoria after Buffalo Bill staged his Wild West Show for the queen. There’s also the Cody Nite Rodeo, the country’s only summer-season nightly rodeo. Families looking to keep their wallets in their pockets can also take a drive east along the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway to Pahaska Tepee, where Buffalo Bill went to relax with friends such as Teddy Roosevelt and the Prince of Monaco. Don’t forget binoculars. Wildlife watching is free, and you must might get glimpse of bison, eagles, bighorn sheep, river otters, elk or even bears or wolves (Don’t forget to practice safe viewing by leaving plenty of distance from the animals.). Don’t miss the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, with five museums under one room. The Draper Natural History Museum explores the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, and it’s a must-see for anyone planning a trip to the park.
Where to Stay Blair Hotels, a collection of three hotels conveniently located on Sheridan Avenue, the town’s highly walkable main street. There’s a Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn plus the Buffalo Bill Village, with comfortable cabin accommodations. Take time to visit the gift shop, with a fun collection of clothing, jewelry, candy and gifts items.
Located on the Florida panhandle, this small beach town lays claim to being home to "the World's Whitest Beaches."
What to Do After spending plenty of time with your feet in the sand, be sure to stop by the National Naval Aviation Museum. Not only is it the world’s largest aviation museum in the country, but it offers free admission daily. Don’t miss Bands on the Beach, which occurs every Tuesday from Apr.-Oct. Pack a picnic, bring the kids and relax to free music as you watch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico. Explore the 8.5 mile Pensacola eco-trail, where the whole family can learn about local plant life, look for and collect seashells and even keep an eye out for a sea turtle or two! For fresh and local eats and goods, wander through the Palafox Market on Saturday mornings.
Where to Stay There are plenty of budget-friendly offerings, from KOA campsites to VRBO homes and hotels like the Hilton Pensacola Beach Hotel, which has family-friendly suites with kitchen and bunk beds available. Rates start at $116 a night.
This friendly beach town has a much more laid-back vibe (and cheaper prices) than nearby Kennebunkport.
What to Do In Wells, the seven miles that are known as Crescent Beach and Drake’s Island Beach is always a popular tourist attraction, but there are plenty of other cheap activities for families. Head to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge and walk the one-mile trail that’ll take you through salt marshes. Go to the world-famous Maine Diner and order a bowl of the clam chowder, and if you are headed there during the winter, Harris Farm is just over 30 minutes away and offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat bike rides for reasonable prices (kids 6 & under are free on the weekends, adults are only $15.).
Where to Stay The Misty Harbor Resort is open year-round and offers lots of family-friendly amenities like an indoor pool, playground, in-unit kitchen, a prime location on the trolley route and proximity to markets and the beach. Current rates start at $119 per night.
What to Do Home to Knott's Berry Farm, families who visit this area of Orange County will enjoy its proximity to gorgeous beaches, parks and all the area attractions like Disneyland. Travel back in time and take advantage of the many historic buildings and museums in Buena Park that offer free tours like the Whitaker-Jaynes House, the Bacon House, the Tice House and the Stage Shop Hotel. Visitors will also enjoy a stop at Knott's Independence Hall, a true brick-by-brick replica of the original in Philadelphia with free admission. Pint-sized paleontologists will definitely want to stop at Ralph B. Clark Regional Park, home to the Clark Interpretive Center that features ice age fossils and local geology exhibits including a nine-million-year-old baleen whale skeleton. Don't forget to stop at Porto's Bakery and Cafe for an out-of-this-world Cuban treat!
Where to Stay At the Holiday Inn Buena Park-Near Knott's, kids 18 and under stay free and eat free all day at the on-site restaurant. After your day of activities, enjoy the massive hotel pool and Jacuzzi. Rooms start at $113/night and they offer suites and adjoining rooms to accommodate families.
Canaan Valley Resort is a four-season mountain destination that’s about 2 ½ hours outside of Washington, DC in West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands. Nearby are the charming mountain towns of Thomas and Davis, West Virginia, where families can go to enjoy mountain music and an authentic Appalachian vibe.
What to Do The Canaan Valley Ski Area is an all-day playground for the entire family, even the little ones who can find their ski legs in beginner ski school and practice on the Critters Crawl trail. This ski area is the highest mountain valley east of the Rocky Mountains, with affordable lift tickets ($39 for adults midweek; $42 weekends) and a variety of other winter experiences. The resort also has a tube park with as many as 12 tube lanes, ice skating rink and cross-country skiing. \
Where to Stay With 160 rooms, 23 cabins and 34 campsites, Canaan Valley Resort provides lodging for families of all sizes. When it’s time to warm up, head to the lodge for a pizza dinner including local brews for the grownups. The resort also has an indoor pool for splashing away any excess energy and an arcade for a friendly game of air hockey before heading to bed in a modern, spacious lodge room.

What to Do The city is very walkable, there’s a low-cost trolley, mountain access via the Ober Aerial Tramway and there are plenty of free activities including miles of hiking, fishing, the 8-mile Great Smoky Mountains Arts & Crafts Community Loop, walking along the Little Pigeon River, visiting Cades Cove for breathtaking views and more.
Where to Stay There’s no shortage of lodging in Gatlinburg, and in the off-season, deals abound. Take advantage of the prices and book a cozy cabin via VRBO, where some of their top cabin rentals start as low as $101 a night.
One of the most cost-effective vacations can be had in Albuquerque—this city was awarded a spot in the “Top 10 U.S. Value Destinations” by Hotwire and has also found itself in many "Top 10 Cities for Families" lists.

This southwest Missouri spot is nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains offers outdoor experiences and old-time charm.
What to Do With three area lakes, dozens of attractions and a vast array of lodging, families of all ages and sizes choose Branson as their destination of choice for fun. Get up close and personal with tons of different animals at the Promise Land Zoo and then enjoy some entertainment with your dinner at Dolly Parton's Stampede. Spend some time on the water at Table Rock Lake where you can go tubing, jet-skiing, fishing and even scuba diving on the lake's 43,000 acres of water.

What to Do Go on a tour of Elvis Presley’s Graceland Mansion, explore the Woodland Discovery Playground at Shelby Farms Park, watch the Peabody ducks make their daily trek and don't forget to take the monorail to the free Mud Island River Park, where the popular Riverwalk—an exact scale model of the lower Mississippi—will give kids a bird's-eye view of the famous river.

We're partial to a big production in the Big Peach, and our holidays are no exception. From the million-lights of the artfully designed Garden Lights at Atlanta Botanical Garden, to the over-the-top Atlanta Chinese Lantern Festival downtown, our city stands by it's decision to "go big." And it doesn't stop on December 25th. Family-friendly Noon-Years Eve events can be found with bubbles and balloon drops at the Children's Museum of Atlanta's Bubble Bash and Fernbank's Dino Drop, while you can ride the Macy's Pink Pig—our city's most unique holiday tradition—through January.
Extra Intel: Keep your eyes out for Nature’s Wonders at Garden Lights at Atlanta Botanical Garden. It's the world’s largest curtain of synchronized light and sound, and the exhibition runs nightly through Jan. 11, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.

Fred Rogers, aka Mister Rogers, was not only the man behind the iconic children’s show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (which aired from 1968-2001) he was also a proponent of kindness, imagination and helping children understand the importance of expressing feelings. Across the country, and even the world, there’s a renewed interest (and need) to stay true to Mister Rogers message.

There’s no better place for a family vacation then Rogers’ own neighborhood—the city of Pittsburgh and nearby Latrobe, Pennsylvania are home to the Fred Rogers Trail. We spent three perfect days exploring it, and we can tell you we can’t wait to go back and do it all over again. Read on for our top favorites in and around Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Day 1: Mister Rogers’ Childhood: Latrobe, PA
Head out to Latrobe, PA. This small town just under an hour from downtown Pittsburgh is the birthplace and final resting place of Fred Rogers and this is the perfect spot to start your journey along the Fred Rogers Trail. Depending on the time of year you visit, this is either a full day or a half day. If you are visiting from May to September, allow for a full day so you can explore Idlewild & Soakzone Because it’s closed from late October through early May, you can explore Latrobe in a little less time if you wish, although we think it’s easy to spend a day ambling the streets of this adorable town.

Start Here: Fred Rogers Center
Make a stop at the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning & Children’s Media (300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA) at St. Vincent College. Staying true to his legacy, the Fred Rogers Center is an early childhood education center at the college, but the general public can peep the archival library of artifacts from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. There’s a small interactive exhibit for kids as well.

Upstairs you’ll find a display that follows the life of Fred Rogers in chronological order, from his family’s legacy in Latrobe to the people who helped Fred learn about children and children’s education. There are artifacts on display here, as well, including those famous Sperry topsiders he wore.
Don’t Miss: The Upsidedown Mural by Roman Verostko on the way down (or up) the stairs.

Fun fact: St. Vincent is also home to the football field where the Pittsburgh Steelers have held their summer training camp every year for the last 75 years. The campus is small enough to explore on foot, and the Basilica is breathtaking.
Take a Seat & Stay Awhile
Head into downtown Latrobe and stop by the Fred Rogers Statue in James H. Rogers Park (212 Main St, Latrobe, PA). This little city park, named for Fred Rogers’ father, has a beautiful memorial bench with a life-sized, bronze statue of Fred on a bench. Sidle up and stay a while, and snap a few family photos.

Up around the corner you’ll find the Latrobe Art Center (819 Ligonier Street, Latrobe, PA). Inside the Rogers building you’ll find an art center (co-founded by Fred Rogers sister, Laney aka Elaine) which is a hub for the town of Latrobe. There’s a fabulous array of art on the walls all done by local artists and members of the center (and much of it for sale). The center also offers a selection of classes for kids and grown-ups alike. The gift shop is onsite and has plenty of Fred Rogers memorabilia along with impressive locally crafted cards, jewelry and more.

Eat lunch at the cafe right on site, too: Ricolita’s Cafe. We highly recommend the gooey grilled cheese and a cup of soup or the popular “Neighborhood Salad” which includes seasonal fruits like strawberries, and veggies galore.
The Latrobe Art Center also hosts Mister Rogers Family Day every June, a free, day long celebration with activities for kids, entertainment, stories, and more throughout the downtown.

Don’t Miss: Just a couple doors down from the Latrobe Art Center you’ll spot a VERY large Banana Split sculpture, marking the spot where the first Banana Split was ever made.

Living History
The Latrobe Area Historical Society (416 Weldon St., Latrobe, PA) has a number of interesting artifacts from its famous citizens throughout the years. Here you can see a modest display of Fred Rogers items, along with his high school yearbooks from all four years. The Society is small, so a stop won’t take too much of your time, and because it’s all volunteer run, it’s always worth those minutes (and a few dollars of donation; admission is free).

Tip: Kids will enjoy the many shelves of interesting items but it’s a small place so plan ahead if you have little ones and jot down a quick scavenger hunt for them. For example, ask them to find the oldest item there, something or someone wearing a red sweater, something a soldier would have carried, something they don’t recognize (a dial telephone!), etc. This place is an I-Spy dream!

Take a Little Drive
The Latrobe Presbyterian Church (428 Main St., Latrobe, PA) where Fred Rogers attended church as a child is also right next to a small garden with a preserved school bell from the Second Ward School which once stood on the site, the school where Fred Rogers’ attended elementary school.
The original high school where Fred Rogers attended is located at 1501 Ligonier St., Latrobe. However, it is now a privately owned building. The current high school does have a large display of items from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood but is only open to the public during scheduled school activities. You can still get a view of the school and let the kids know that Fred attended high school here where he was yearbook editor and student council president.
Fun fact: The famous golfer Arnold Palmer was also from Latrobe and was a year behind Fred in high school.

Author’s Note: Fred’s final resting place can be found at Latrobe’s Unity Cemetery, in a family mausoleum along with his father, James Hillis Rogers, and his mother, Nancy McFeely Rogers. It’s a beautiful, clean place and a quiet place to reflect on Mister Rogers legacy, so leave only kind thoughts and wishes behind (no teddy bears, please).

Don’t Miss: Idlewild
If you are visiting from May to September, don’t miss: Idlewild & Soakzone (2574 U.S. Route 30, Ligionier, PA). It’s been dubbed the “Best Children’s Park in the World” and includes Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood area where you can ride a real trolley car. Kids will love exploring this park and be sure to pack a bathing suit to play in the water park SoakZone on a hot day. Check the park calendar for opening hours and days.
Spend Days 2 & 3: In and Around Mister Rogers’ Pittsburgh

Day 2: Head to the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and Museum Lab
While it’s possible to spend just an hour at the Children’s Museum of Pittburgh, we recommend allocating most of your morning if not your entire day here, especially if you have kids under 10. We’ve been to hundreds of kids museums across the country and this is one of the best ones we’ve visited!

The museum had a very close relationship with Mister Rogers and developed many exhibits over the years with him, including the Daniel Tiger exhibit that is currently traveling the country. Throughout the museum you’ll find Mister Rogers artifacts, such as his sweater, photos and even the original puppets from the show (located in the Museum Lab).

This museum includes innovative Maker Labs, an entire space of water play including lots of thoughtful nooks for parents to relax (great for babes in arms, too), an area of play just for the little ones with water, sand and more and tons of interactive exhibits including a number of exhibits encouraging you to get to know your neighbor (think sound activated displays that require holding hands).

The Museum Lab is located just a quick walk from the museum’s main entrance and is included with admission. The Museum Lab is designed for kids ages 10 and up, although all are welcome. Here you will find a more sophisticated Maker Lab, interactive art and recording exhibits and more. Housed in what was once an 1893 Carnegie Library, there is currently a weaver on site creating a climbable art installation in “The Stacks.”
Spend time here connecting with your kids and fellow familles and really embody the Fred Rogers spirit yourself.

While it’s a fantastic view any time of the day, locals all swear (and we can, too!) that taking this neighborhood trolley incline in the evening will make you never want to leave Pittsburgh. You’ll fall in love with the glittering city that Fred Rogers and his family called home. Park in the lower lot and ride it both up, and down. There’s a gift shop on site but be aware that tickets require exact change (adults are $2.50, one way).
Day 3: The Senator John Heinz History Center

In addition, Discovery Place includes a “television” where kids can watch Mister Rogers Neighborhood on the screen. This is a great area to get out the wiggles, too, with lots of touchable items and building features all exploring the history of Pittsburgh’s industry and people.
Tip: Follow the spiral staircase above the museum’s cafe to visit the small display called Kidsburgh. You can take a slide back down to the lobby!

A Giant Among Men
Visit the Tribute to Children statue on North Shore Drive. This 10-ft tall statue of Fred Rogers sitting down and tying his sneakers overlooks the river and his beloved city. Not only is it impressively giant, you can even hear him singing.
If You’re Up for It: About 45 minutes from Pittsburgh proper you’ll find the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, where you can explore the history of “Neighborhood Trolleys” in the and the legacy of streetcar lines in the area. You’ll also Discover where Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood filmed the iconic episode “Grandparents.”
Stop By The Studio
Take a detour for a quick selfie outside WQED Studios, (4802 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA) where Mister Rogers Neighborhood, was produced and filmed.

A daily lap swimmer, Mr. Rogers was a member and supporter of YMCAs and YWCAs throughout his life. Some suites even have turntables and records from Fred Rogers’ own label, Small Word Records!
