‘Tis the season to indulge your preschooler’s love for their favorite shows, be it PAW Patrol, Gabby’s Dollhouse, or Rubble & Crew. Are those catchy theme songs living rent-free in your head? Don’t worry, it’s the same for us, too.

While you’ll likely be in the company of these shows for a few more years, you can take solace in the valuable life lessons they provide and (drumroll, please…) the independent play they inspire. And as your little one soaks in these inspirational characters and action-packed storylines, a world of creativity and independent play awaits.

This holiday season, thanks to an exciting line of show-to-shelf toys featuring their cherished characters, your preschooler can now transform these meaningful messages into reality right at home. Whether it’s launching missions from the PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie Aircraft Carrier HQ or hopping aboard the Gabby’s Dollhouse Gabby Cat Friendship, their favorite shows will become the backdrop for thrilling solo adventures.

To help you get ahead of your holiday shopping (and gift yourself the joys of an entertained preschooler!), we’ve compiled the best TV-inspired toys for independent play. Read on as we dive deeper into how they’re perfect for sparking your little one’s creativity and imagination—all within the comforts of their playroom.

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie Aircraft Carrier HQ

$129.99

Calling all future heroes of Adventure City. The award-winning PAW Patrol Aircraft Carrier HQ is a must-have for epic rescue missions.

Inspired by the action-packed PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie that’s in theatres now, this playset is a game-changer for independent play. Little ones can transform the Aircraft Carrier HQ into a massive, supercharged rescue mission headquarters with the push of a command center button. The playset immediately elevates the control room, creates two launch ramps, and reveals an impressive meteor core that lights up and plays seriously cool sounds.

The fun doesn’t stop there, though. Your little hero can grab Chase, who comes with his very own action figure and authentic police car rescue vehicle, to blast two projectile launchers that’ll save the day.

Paw Patrol Academy App

$7.99+

In need of some portable playtime for your kiddo? The brand new preschool learning app, PAW Patrol Academy, features heroic missions, engaging lessons, silly games to “get the wiggles out,” and real episode clips from episodes of PAW Patrol. With tons of age-appropriate, interactive adventures, this app is a brand-new way for your preschoolers to experience PAW Patrol and learn along the way. Available on iOS and Android for $49.99 annual/$7.99 month with a 7-day unlimited access free trial.

Gabby’s Dollhouse Gabby Cat Friend Ship

$59.99

Ahoy, parents. It’s time to set sail on the purrfect adventure with the Gabby Cat Friend Ship. As seen in DreamWorks Animation’s popular series, this all-new playset brings the magic of Gabby’s Dollhouse to life.

Your number one fan can join Gabby Girl (who comes costumed with two fabulous outfits, of course) and Captain Mercat on the upper deck, complete with a color-changing pool and a diving board. They can then venture below deck for an electrifying dance party where they can show off their moves—with confidence, as Gabby encourages— thanks to a light-up disco ball, dance floor, and photo booth.

Little ones can further elevate their sea-filled adventure with the Carnival and Spa deluxe rooms (sold separately) that can be easily attached to the ship or the Purrfect Dollhouse. The ship can also be linked to the Purrfect Dollhouse from the diving board. Trust us, your child will be entertained for hours on end.

Rubble & Crew Barkyard Crane Tower

$79.99

Rubble and his family of construction-loving pups are all about working together. In this two-foot-tall Rubble & Crew Barkyard Crane Tower, your young contractor can help the crew create impressive buildings for the town.

Loaded with 12 ounces of Kinetic Build-It Sand (specifically formulated to stick together so it’s easily molded for construction play), four molds, interchangeable tools, and the trusty Rubble vehicle and pup, it’s an invitation for open-ended, sensory play that’ll keep your child busy.

Did we mention it’s also a sensory symphony? It features cool lights, sounds, music, and phrases straight from the series. Get ready to embark on a construction adventure like no other.

Disney Junior Firebuds Bo & Flash Rescue Adventure Firetruck with VROOMLINK

$59.99

Buckle up and join Bo and Flash for action-packed adventures with the Firebuds Bo & Flash Rescue Adventure Firetruck. Based on the Disney Junior’s preschool show, this firetruck is no ordinary vehicle when it comes to saving lives.

During a high-speed rescue, Flash springs to life with motorized moves straight out of the show, even nailing the iconic “fist bump.” With special technology, it recognizes when it’s moving forward or backward to unlock cool sounds, and can set off an ensemble of lights, sounds, movements, and phrases from the series when Bo hops in the firetruck.

Bring home all the Disney Firebuds characters (each sold separately) from the show, so your little firefighter can take on more series-inspired rescues.

Spin Master offers even more toys for independent play to help your preschooler create an exciting world where only their favorite characters come to life. Check out their awesome line up—and enjoy the breather these playsets will give you!

Use Alexa to send a “thank you” to some of the hardest working people this holiday season: Amazon delivery drivers

There’s no doubt that Amazon delivery drivers are some of the hardest working people out there. They deliver countless packages, year round, in rain, snow, or shine—and their job only gets more intense during the holiday season, when so many of us turn to Amazon for our holiday shopping needs. So this year, you can use Alexa to send an extra thank you to your driver—just say, “Alexa, thank my driver,” and your most recent delivery driver will be notified of your gratitude and receive an instant, $5 bonus at no extra cost to you.

Amazon announced the new program this week, saying that since the company started in 1994, it has delivered a staggering 15 billion packages in the U.S. alone. The new “thank you” feature is available to U.S. Amazon customers who have an Alexa-enabled device (like Echo or Echo Show), or the Alexa or Amazon Shopping mobile apps. The $5 rewards will be given to the first million drivers customers thank, at no extra cost to the customers. And the five drivers who receive the most “thank yous” during the holiday season will receive a $10,000 bonus, plus an additional $10,000 donation to a charity of their choice.

“We love hearing the countless stories from customers about the many ways delivery drivers make their lives better,” Amazon said in a news release. “We are excited for this new opportunity to thank these everyday heroes and giving our customers the ability to help us do it.”

The announcement continued, “Amazon has a long-standing commitment to empowering and investing in delivery drivers. While this thank-you is another moment for us to express our gratitude, it certainly will not be the last, and we look forward to finding additional opportunities to celebrate the drivers who deliver smiles for customers. Thank you, delivery drivers, for helping us deliver for customers this holiday season and every day.”

Our #1 rule of gift-giving? Make it personal.

Why is it that the closer we are to someone, the harder it is to pick out a present for them? Maybe it has to do with knowing absolutely everything they already have. Or maybe it’s because we want it to be perfect. It’s possible nothing seems to show our nearest and dearest how much they mean to us. There’s actually a really good chance it’s all three. We’ve come to the conclusion that the best personalized gifts are unique (naturally), touching (we want to see misty eyes, folks!), and, of course, exactly what they want (that’s the whole point of a great gift, right?).

We’re sort of experts when it comes to shopping, and although we basically live online, one of the absolute best places we’ve found to create incredible gifts is Mixbook. Yep. Create. And no, you absolutely don’t have to be super artistic or great with your hands or a DIY project master to design something they’ll absolutely adore. The best part? There’s no wrong way to craft the personalized gift of their dreams with Mixbook. It’s how we’re tackling holiday shopping for our closest friends and family. Wanna know how you can, too? Of course you do. These are our favorite picks so far this seson!

Custom Holiday Cards

Are holiday cards actually considered gifts? If you ask us, they 100% are! We love getting to see our friends and family in photos, especially if we can't see them in person this time of year, and they make our holiday decorations that much more festive. Of course we're going to display them! That's the best part.

Mixbook's huge array of holiday card templates mean you'll create something that is unique to you and your family. They offer card themes like winter holidays, Christmas, Hanukkah cards, multicultural holiday cards, and New Year! All you have to do is pick the one that fits your vibe (we admit, it's hard to pick!), upload the photo or photos you want featured into Mixbook's ultra-easy editing tool, and you're off!

And don't forget the holiday party invitations, because Mixbook has those covered, too.

That's another reason we can't stop using Mixbook—customization isn't limited to only photos (though they're our favorite part, for sure!).

Keep your crew entertained even after the presents are open with these city adventures

Christmas Day is almost here. You’ve baked all the cookies and seen all the lights; now you’re looking for something to do with the kids after the holiday hurrahs are over. Luckily, there are plenty of Christmas things to do in Portland, even on that special day. From hiking and watching old movies to taking a river cruise or a day trip, we’ve got lots of activities that’ll keep your kids busy after the main event. Pull on your matching sweaters, fill a thermos of hot cocoa, and head out to explore.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BbLZXS5luUo/?hidecaption=true

1. Go See Christmas Lights

If you’ve already visited your neighborhood’s lights, take the family to Portland’s own Peacock Lane, filled with historic English-style cottages, which are all decked out in lights and decorations. A Portland tradition since the 1920s, there are two ways to see the houses: on foot and by car. If you’re staying in your car, visit at non-peak times, which are typically before 7 p.m. and after 10 p.m. Alternatively, head to the Portland International Raceway to be awed by the 250 illuminated holiday set pieces. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the “Largest Light Show West of the Mississippi.” So bring a thermos full of cocoa, adding some marshmallows for good measure, turn on the Christmas tunes and meander through a winter wonderland that is sure to leave a sparkle in your eye!  This is open evenings throughout December including on Christmas Day, but be sure to order tickets ahead of time so you’re guaranteed a spot. Peacock Lane is, as always, free.

2. Marvel at Trees & a Gingerbread Display

Make it a downtown scavenger hunt: a tree, a gingerbread house, and more. At Pioneer Courthouse Square, you can visit the city’s holiday tree without the crowds on Christmas Day. The 75-foot Douglas-fir tree—provided each year by Stimson Lumber Company—will be lit up over 14,000 colorful lights. Bring some hot chocolate and treats for an extra magical experience.

Then, walk five blocks over to the Benson Hotel to spy their lobby gingerbread display, a tradition for over 50 years. This year's theme, Multnomah Falls, is surely one your kids will recognize. Made using 150 pounds of gingerbread, 50 pounds of marzipan, 20 pounds of chocolate, 10 pounds of Rice Krispies Treats, and more royal icing than you can image, it's truly a work for art. Our tip? After you've checked out this masterpiece, head to the Historic Stairwell and check out the hotel's mini museum featuring over 160 pictures of Portland's history.

3. Catch a Flick

You can’t beat the classic Christmas-at-a-movie-theater, so why even try. This year the big ticket shows are Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and the new Avatar: The Way of Water. All the area’s large theaters like Regal and Century are open, or head to McMenamins Baghdad or McMenamins Power Station to catch those flicks. For something slightly more festive, grab tickets at Vancouver’s sweet 1930s-era one-screen Kiggins Theater – they’re screening one showing each of Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, and The Bishop’s Wife, a Christmas rom-com with Cary Grant and Loretta Young from 1947.

Good to Know: The Moishe House will also be hosting a movie night complete with vegetarian Chinese food. RSVP if you want in on this event.

4. Head to the Coast

It’s a fact that the Oregon Coast is lovely in winter—maybe not in terms of weather, but in terms of less crowds, a rugged windswept beauty, and that cozy feeling of staying inside and playing games during a storm. Plus, winter storms tend to churn up more treasure for agate or seashell hunting. It’s also the season for clam digging and crabbing—clam diggers will want to watch for low tides when the beach is more exposed.

Check out Lincoln City’s Finders Keepers program for a fun treasure hunt. The city’s glassblowers drop surprise floats on the various beaches and if you find one, it’s yours to keep. This year, they’ll drop around 50 new floats from December 19 to 25. Good luck!

5. Explore the Great Outdoors

Whether it's a white Christmas or not, heading outside for some fresh air is a perfect way to get out the holiday wiggles. There are plenty of easy hikes around the city—at parks, arboretums, and in the Gorge. Without the leaves on the trees, you can even spot waterfalls and streams from further away. Be prepared with plenty of layers, water, hot drinks, and spare clothes.

6. Enjoy a River Cruise

For an especially magical day, book a ticket for Portland Spirit Cruise where you’ll spend time on the river from the desks of a 150-foot ship. This special two-hour cruise with a holiday buffet comes with holiday cheer and old-world charm as you take in the sights of the Willamette River. Choose from a morning or evening cruise—each comes with live music on a baby grand piano, desserts, and hot drinks.

7. Hit the Slopes

From Cosmic Tubing to skiing, Mt. Hood is a winter playland where the fun doesn't stop on Christmas Day. Bring your own sled and scope out some excellent tubing or sledding spots, or strap the kids in to find some snowshoe trails. For official slopes, there's plenty of skiing options on the mountain. And be sure to check out Mt. Hood Skibowl for the world's only Cosmic Tubing®. Enjoy over 600,000 LED lights, laser light shows, black lights, colored lights, rocking music, and even dual conveyor lifts dedicated to tubing. It's great fun for the whole family.

8. Sit Down at One of These Restaurants Open on Christmas Day

If you need a break from the holiday cooking, let one of Portland’s restaurants take the burden off your shoulders. Many are open on Christmas Day– for something more upscale head to Jake’s Grill or McCormick and Schmidt’s. At JinJu Patisserie you can enjoy some of the city’s best croissants along with eye-catching desserts and flavors. And at Prost, enjoy a pretzel or curry wurst while you travel the length of Germany, in beer (minors welcome until 8pm).
