Atlanta is within five hours of the beach, the mountains, and a long list of historic sites worth paying a visit to. Providence Canyon State Park | Columbus, GA

Just over two hours from Atlanta in Lumpkin, you'll find an astonishing smaller (but still very big) version of the Grand Canyon, Georgia's own Providence Canyon. And, with our frequently glorious and not too cold winter weather, you can explore it year-round. With more than 1,000 acres of deep, rocky canyons caused by poor farming practices in the 1800s, plus native wildflowers and vegetation, it's as cool as it is totally out of place in Georgia. A surefire way to both social distance and experience one of the state’s most amazing natural wonders, the park should be on your winter bucket list. to the free Infantry Museum at Fort Benning.

Don't Miss: You'll find old cars rusted-out along the rim of the canyon not far off the trail, and if you only have time (or endurance) for one or two hikes, be sure and check out canyons 4 and 5, which are known for their impressive colors. The park has several picnic areas, including covered tables and a playground. Make sure you bring whatever you want to eat because there isn’t any place remotely close to pick up food near the canyons.

Where to Stay: If you want to make a weekend of the trip—it's doable as a long day trip—your best bet for lodging is in nearby Columbus. In addition to lodging, you'll find the Coca Cola Space Science Center, a Lunchbox Museum, and a cool Riverwalk that hugs the banks of 15 miles of the Chattahoochee River.

Fort Reno Park

Climb Fort Reno's hill and you've reached the highest natural point in DC! This slope is known for it's longer-than-usual ride. We’ve got ways to save money, how to maximize your water park time, and loads of other Great Wolf Lodge tips

With new locations coming up across the U.S., Great Wolf Lodge is the largest collection of indoor waterparks and resorts in North America. There are currently 17 locations in the U.S, and most are a skip-and-a-jump away from a major city. As soon as you walk in the door to the massive lobby, you’ll be immersed in the wilderness theme that leans into the “great outdoors” aesthetic. We checked out some of the Great Wolf Lodge properties and have a number of tips and tricks for you to make the most out of your indoor waterpark visit!

Tips for Checking In and Staying Late at Great Wolf Lodge

1. Get there early!

There is so much to do inside the doors of the lodge. Even if your room isn’t ready, you can ask to check in early in order to use the facilities and leave your luggage in the car. With daily events lined up, there is no time to waste. In October you'll have trick or treating and in the winter season, it's all about holiday crafts and storytimes.

2. Check out the app

The Great Wolf app has the menus of all the restaurants under its roof, information on the attractions, and times of the daily events. It has everything you need to know in one place instead of continuing to call the front desk or check with an employee. You can also use it to check in and avoid the long lines!

3. Charge your phone.

While you enjoy the park, leave your phone on so that you can get updates on when your room is ready. You can also text the Great Wolf Lodge number for any issues you have during your stay.

4. Check out and stay late

You don't have to end your water park day early on check-out day. You still have access to the water park until closing on your check-out day. Pack up your room and store your luggage in your car or with the front desk. You change in the locker rooms before heading home.

5. Upgrade your room to suit your family.

Skip the standard room and go for a Wolf Den room or Kid Cabin so your crew can really spread out. Older kids will love their own pseudo-room within a room. For younger kids, the bunk beds' twin-sized mattresses can easily be taken down and put on the floor. Couches have pull-out beds and there is space to add another bed or crib and shift furniture for parents who co-sleep. There's even a TV in the kid room to keep everyone entertained when you need a little downtime.

6. Set up camp at the water park

Even if you aren't planning on heading to the water park until later in the morning, it's a good idea to send an adult down once it opens to set up your home base for the day. On crowded days, chairs will get snagged early in the morning and you'll be forced to sit on the floor in a corner. Grab a few chairs and leave some flip-flops or other cheap gear on them with your towels. When you come to the water park, show the kids where your home base is located so they can find you if they are older and can explore on their own.

7. Snag a cabana

If you have a larger group or would like your own designated area with a waiter, a cabana is a good option. You have access to the cabana beginning at 10 a.m. and it includes water, sodas, a fan, and a little bit of privacy. You can also get your waiter to bring you lunch and drinks when you are ready so that you can avoid the lines.

8. Find activities for everyone

If you have a child or two that’s not super fond of swimming, there are plenty of dry activities. Spend time in the arcade and running around the hotel to find treasure with an interactive witchy game called MagiQuest. There's a ropes course for older kids (be sure to bring socks/closed-toe shoes for this activity).

9. Free Activities at Great Wolf Lodge

Consult the day's schedule on the app to see what is being offered for the day. You can typically find activities like crafts, yoga for kids, character meet and greets, and so much more. There's even more to do if you visit during Snowland or one of the other themed times of year.

10. Buy a pass

To save money on those inevitable impulse purchases that kids on vacation want, buy a pass depending on your children’s interests and ages. From most expensive to least, there is the Wolf Pass, Paw Pass, and Pup Pass. This is especially good if you have kids that want to spend time outside of the waterpark on other activities like the arcade and ropes course.

11. Leave space in your luggage.

You’ll bring home more than you left with whether it's sweet treats, magic wands, gemstones, souvenirs from the gift shop, or prizes. Some locations have additional attractions like ropes courses, mini-golf, arcades, or Build-a-Bear workshops.

12. Save the Magic Wands

MagiQuest is the brand’s exclusive adventure game. If you’re planning on visiting another location or the same location at another date, save your wands to continue playing the game. This way you don’t have to buy a new one.

13. Make dining reservations early

If your GWL restaurants take reservations, book yours early. We found that many of them book up early in the day on busy holiday weekends.

14. Avoid lines and order food via the app

This was especially important when you are buying lunch in the water park, Avoid the long lines and order your food through the app. You'll be notified when it is ready for pickup.

15. Get food delivered

Many GWL locations have restaurants nearby that will deliver. The Bay Area location in Manteca is connected to a Costco via the parking lot so you can walk over there and snag a large pizza to bring back to your room. You'll also have a mini fridge and microwave in your room to heat up food brought from home. Consider bringing a cooler with you and leaving it in your room (coolers are not allowed in the water park).

16. Get the email deals

Sign up for the lodge’s email club to receive alerts on deals and specials. You can also find GWL on sites like Groupon during the off-season.

17. Grab a day pass

If you want to check out the water park, ropes course, and arcade but want to avoid the cost of staying overnight, snag a day pass. These are available at all Great Wolf Lodges, depending on capacity.

18. Go during the off-season

Prices vary greatly depending on time of year and whether you are visiting on a weekend. You can save a lot by being flexible on when you visit.

Summer may seem like it’s winding down, but if you—or your kids—are itching for an adventure, it’s not too late to get away! (Reminder: The public school year starts on Sep. 8, so you’ve got a little extra time, despite what your social media feeds are telling you with all those cute first-day photo opps. Hooray?) We’ve rounded up some of the best family weekend getaways from NYC, all within three hours of the city limits. Consider these options ideal for an overnight, or a few. What’s even better: most of them offer late-season savings! Whether you’re desperate to cool down with a water park or get a step-up on back-to-school season with a history lesson, there are weekend trip options fit for any family (LEGO fans and Elmo lovers included!). Pack the kids into a car and hit the road for some last-gasp summer fun.

Bear Mountain State Park

It's never a bad time of year to visit Bear Mountain, but it's a particularly lovely place to spend a weekend in the summer. One of its most popular features is its free Trailside Zoo, which houses local wild animals in the process of rehabilitation, including—you guessed it—some bears along a winding path punctuated by informative plaques. Hiking is a popular activity here, with many visitors choosing to climb to Perkins Memorial Tower for a hilltop view, but the peak is also accessible by car.

Take a dip in the community pool (don't forget a lock and a couple dollars for the admission fee), and then float a boat out on peaceful Hessian Lake—where you can also fish if you have a license. (Bring your own gear.) Picnicking lakeside is common here (there are even a few grills), and don't leave without taking a spin on the carousel.

For lodging, the slightly rustic Overlook Lodge is a good choice for small families, and the Stone Cottages are single-story houses good for larger groups. For a bit more polish, the Bear Mountain Inn is the deluxe choice.

Morey’s Piers and Beachfront Water Parks

Escape to the Jersey Shore for some solid summer vibes on the boardwalk. Morey's Piers in Wildwood, NJ, has been welcoming vacationing families for more than 50 years and will keep the kids busy with more than 100 rides and attractions and two beachfront water parks. Plus: you'll find a lovely, free beach here, which is not so easy elsewhere in the state of New Jersey.

Dog families should keep their eyes peeled for two annual special events that traditionally close out the water park season: the Doggie Dash, a pair of dog-and-human runs with a beach party afterward, and Doggie Splash, when canines have free rein to paddle along the river adventure, splash in the fountain pool or fetch tennis balls in the activity pool of Raging Waters “Water Bark." You don't even have to have a dog to attend! (A portion of the Doggie Splash proceeds will benefit local dog and cat rescue Beacon Animal Rescue.)

To make things easy, The Blue Palms Resort, located close by, offers lodging packages, often with complimentary amusement pier wristbands.

LEGOLAND New York Resort & Hotel

At 150 acres, LEGOLAND New York Resort and Hotel is the brand's largest park, featuring seven LEGO-themed lands to explore. Attractions include theme park rides for both little and bigger kids, but Lego lovers also get the chance to create with master builders and attend a "ninja training camp," tinker in the robotic LEGO center and visit Miniland, which is a massive LEGOscape featuring the landmarks of 10 cities nationwide. At Disney, they trade pins, but here it's minifigures—bring some along, or buy them at the park!

You can go for the day or rest your head at the on-site LEGOLAND Hotel for the ultimate brick vacation. You'll find LEGO-themed suites with a separate room for the kids (notably themed with pirates, kingdoms, Ninjago, or LEGO Friends, for starters) as well as nightly all-ages entertainment, interactive LEGO features, a pool and more.

Although it's a less-than-two-hour drive, you can't just show up: You must reserve your tickets in advance.

Lake Compounce Family Theme Park

For some good old Americana away from the mega parks, check out Lake Compounce, the country's oldest amusement park. Celebrating more than 175 years, this park is home to a full water park (including the new "Venus Vortex", thrill rides, kiddie rides, and Boulder Dash, considered by many to be the best wooden rollercoaster in the world. You can also take in the show Daniel Tiger's Grr-ific Day! and meet Daniel and Katerina afterwards.

Lodging options include camping on-site in a cabin, "Cub Hut", tent or RV, with campfire, wifi and transportation to the park included.

Hyde Park

For history buffs or families with older kids, head to Dutchess County's Hyde Park, where you can tour the homes of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the FDR Presidential Library (the nation's first collection of its kind) and more than a thousand acres of gardens and trails. (For a guide to the trails on the grounds, click here.)

In addition to the home, where FDR lived as both a child and as an adult with Eleanor, the museum features special interactive experiences, immersive audio‐visual theaters and rarely seen artifacts that convey the dramatic story of the Roosevelt era.

Eleanor Roosevelt's home Val-Kill—the only National Historic Site dedicated to a first lady—is nearby and worth a visit to view the exhibit detailing how she was a fierce champion champion of women's rights, civil rights and diplomacy. For more history, visit the Vanderbilt Mansion, an example of Beaux-Arts architecture from renowned firm McKim, Mead & White, where you can take a self-led tour with a phone or tablet. (You must register for the tour prior to your visit.)

Other spots to check out in the area include the Hyde Park Drive-in, or Four Brother's Drive-in (a bit of a drive but worth it), the Dutchess County Fair (Aug. 23-28 this year) and roller rink Roller Magic.

Sesame Place

A theme park tailor made for the tiniest of vacationers, Sesame Place offers fun rides, a waterpark and, of course, Cookie Monster and Big Bird walking around, ready for hugs and pictures.

When you visit, be sure to look out for a Neighborhood Street Party Parade and take advantage of the opportunity to dine with Elmo & Friends (for an extra fee). Plus: fireworks every Saturday and Sunday through Sep. 4. Good to know: Sesame Place is the first theme park to be designated a Certified Autism Center, where staff receives autism-awareness training and guests can access sensory-friendly services and resources throughout the park.

Sesame Place is having a "Last Splash Sale" promotion with tickets as low as $40—a savings of 60 percent. The park also often has partnerships with several hotels in the area, where you can book a package that includes tickets to the park along with lodging. Bonus: you don’t need a car to get there. Take NJ Transit to Trenton and then hop on a bus or grab a cab.

The Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark

Located in The Catskills' Monticello, Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark is now the state's largest, measuring 80,000 square feet. In addition to 11 water attractions, from mild (lazy river) to thrill-inducing, it's topped by a transparent roof, includes a living plant wall and is kept a pleasant 84 degrees year-round.

The resort runs activities for kids and families throughout the week, with activities including scavenger hunts, trivia game nights and movies under the stars. For food, you'll find eight dining options, from grab-and-go to sit-down, with many serving food made with ingredients from local suppliers. For grown-ups, Resorts World Casino is next door, and there's a spa on-site, which also offers kid's treatments.

Just 10 minutes away is Holiday Mountain, which has skiing and tubing in the winter and go-karts and mini-golf in the summer. Also nearby is Bethel Woods, home to Woodstock Music Fest in 1969 and concert series and events today. FYI: the LEGOLAND New York Resort is about a 30-minute drive from here.

Bonus: Finger Lakes Region

The Finger Lakes are a bit of a longer drive, but well worth it for the kid-friendly attractions coupled with natural beauty. For a trip to the 19th century, visit the Genessee Country Village and Museum in Mumford, New York State's largest living history museum. We also recommend a tour of Lazy Acre Alpacas in Bloomfield, where you can learn about and feed the friendly animals.

Rochester is home to one of the best children's museums in the country, the Strong National Museum of Play, where you'll also find the Toy Hall of Fame and the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Amusement Park Seabreeze outside of Rochester is good for lakeside summer fun, with a water park, big and little kid rides, and the Jack Rabbit, the oldest continuously operating rollercoaster in the country.

The area is known for its hiking and biking trails and a thriving craft beer, wine and spirits industry, but the beautiful lakes—namely Canandaigua and Keuka—are the real crowd pleasers. And don't forget the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park, which is in the western part of the Finger Lakes.

Best for A Shore Thing: Morey’s Piers & Beachfront Water Parks

For the ultimate family-friendly summer shore experience, Morey’s Piers & Beachfront Water Parks is a sure bet. It’ll take you a while to get there — figure three hours — which is why you might want to consider spending a night. Best for Theme Park Lovers: Six Flags Hurricane Harbor

Six Flags Hurricane Harbor is about a 90-minute drive from the city, and has something for everyone. Caribbean Cove is a water play area just for little ones, with 55 interactive features including spray nozzles, jets, valves and water guns, as well as a two-feet-deep entry pool and a beach area for relaxing. Other spots for families include the Blue Lagoon wave pool and Discovery Bay water playground, and features like a nursing station, stroller rentals and cabanas are nice, too. You know a water park is the real deal when there's a two-hour play limit per person. But, trust us, the cut off time is totally worth it. The water park is part of a massive swim center that, in addition to two pools, features a 134-foot water slide, splash down area, water buckets, preschool slide, vortex area and a poolside spa for grown-ups. Good to know: Kids must be 3 years old and completely potty trained to swim here.

Insider tip: If you want to watch planes literally jet off, head to Dixon Observation Park to watch the flight traffic in and out of BWI. It's a 10 minute drive from the aquatic center.

This indoor chill spot features a leisure pool with a 30-foot-high slide that exits the building in an enclosed tube, a 20-foot-high slide with an open tube, a spa, a vortex, a current channel, an open shallow water area. Plus, tinier tots will work their wiggles out on the smaller slide and zero depth entry temp-controlled pool.
