Waiting for that one big vacation that takes you overseas or across the country can be real hard once summer rolls around. Ease the longing by planning out a bunch of smaller staycations that allow you to take in Portland like a tourist. From outdoor excursions to winding wine country experiences to urban adventures, we’ve put together the best Portland staycation experiences for every type of family.

Go To The Mountain

Head to Mt. Hood for a daytrip or staycation at Timberline Lodge and enjoy some summer skiing! That’s right, this spot has snow in the summer. It also offers visiting families epic hikes, including access to the iconic Pacific Crest Trail. If your kids love to travel on two wheels, you’re in luck. There are tons of bike trails to explore that take you through towering trees and offer families epic views.

After being one with nature and getting some solitude from the masses, book it to the lodge where you can hit one of their restaurants or book a room and stay the night. Timberline Lodge offers an array of room options that fit can accommodate families of all sizes while providing a true “deep woods getaway” experience.

If you really worked up an appetite, swing by Hood River to enjoy Italian wines and some nibbles at Marchesi Winery, rock-solid brews at Full Sail Brewery, or a mix of American cuisine at Skamania Lodge.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors.

One of the best hikes in Oregon is located in a rural town close to Salem: Silver Falls. The hikes are rolling and easy, even on little ones with dramatic falls. And there’s a lodge nearby with snacks and bathrooms. While you’re there, check out the Tulip Farm or wander though the Oregon Garden. Bonus: See the only Frank Lloyd Wright house in Oregon.

Get Your Game On

Do you have a family full of gamers? You don’t have to stay home to get some good gaming time in. Quarter World is and old-school hangout with a variety of arcade games and pinball machines, plus a full bar that serves pizza. It welcomes gamers of all ages on the weekends. Not done playing arcade games? Joystick on over to Ground Kontrol, an arcade in Northwest Portland, where you can play everything from Pacman to pinball. Ground Kontrol also has beverages, including the adult kind, and food.

But that’s not all Portland has to offer both old-school gamers and new. Make sure to check out Grand Central Bowling where you can take your gaming to the alley and when you’re done, you can hit the arcade and grab a bite to eat in the diner!

A Downtown Portland Staycation

For a real staycation experience, head downtown for the day to take in one of Portland’s most beloved spots. Tom McCall Waterfront Park, where the family can stroll and play along the walking path that follows the Willamette River. Stop and let the kids cool off and play in the Salmon Street Springs, and interactive water fountain controlled by and underground computer.

But that’s not all downtown watefront has to offer. Go to the best urban garden in Portland – the Lan Su Chinese Gardens. It’s close to Waterfront Park and blooming cherry blossoms and flowering plums. Take pictures of our bridges and the Willamette River with the kids. Hungry? Old Town Pizza is a favorite pizzeria close by. If it’s the weekend, you can stop at the Saturday Market to get handmade soaps, t-shirts, and bird houses. And why not finish up the day with an art-lover’s experience. The Portland Art Museum and stroll through a variety of exhibits ranging from paintings and photography to sculptures, there’s something for everyone.

Sound like a real vacation? Make it so with an overnight at the Woodlark, a Provenance Hotel, located downtown. It offers families suites with luxurious beds, living-room like sitting areas and there are even amenities for the family pet! You’ll love it so much that when you have the grandparents come visit, you’ll have them book a suite for themselves just so that you can visit!

Wind Your Way to Wine Country

Who doesn’t want to experience a wine country getaway? Head to McMinville where you can spend hours in the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum that has Howard Hughes’ all-wood airplane, the Spruce Goose, and a giant indoor waterpark, too. When you are done, you can also stop by various wineries like Dominio IV and Remy Wines. Not far away is a small town called Mt. Angel where there’s an abbey and some of the best German food you’ll eat. Afterward, go to St. Paul and enjoy two of the best wineries in the area: Lady Hill Winery and Sinnean. (They’re even next door to each other!)

Enjoy Vancouver

Step back in time; Vancouver is home to a historic site and fur-trading outpost: Fort Vancouver. Established by the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Columbia Department, it boasts housing a number of military elite, including Ulysses S. Grant before he became a U.S. president. A fantastic playground and Pearson Air Museum are a stone’s throw away. While at Pearson, don’t miss the video about the history of Southern Washington, covering everything from the Native Americans who fished the Columbia to the women who built World War II ships. The kids will love the library in Vancouver, and there’s reciprocity if you live in Portland; you can check out books. The children’s section is one the best in the area and definitely worth your time.

Rollercoasters, funnel cakes, waffle cones, hotdogs, oh my! Theme parks scream summer. If you’re looking for adventure on your next family vacation, theme parks offer rides and attractions but also old-timey activities, special events, character meet-and-greets and more. These mega Midwestern theme parks are packed with enough fun for at least a two-day stay and each is within driving distance from Chicago. One is located along a beach, another immersed in the Ozarks, and one is the summertime home of Santa Claus. Here are our picks for Midwestern theme parks worth the road trip from Chicago.

HOLIDAY WORLD

The lowdown
Holiday World is a combo theme park and water park located in Santa Claus, IN, the summertime home of the Man in Red.

When this tiny town applied for its first post office in 1856, the application was refused as there was already a Santa Fe. The town then voted to change its name to Santa Claus in honor of the holiday hero. As a result, it receives thousands of letters addressed to Santa from around the world every holiday season.

Holiday World celebrates the holidays all summer long with its "four lands": Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Fourth of July. The Raven wooden coaster mimics a bird's acrobatic flight pattern in Halloween land. The Voyage in Thanksgiving land is widely considered one of the best wooden coasters for its 154 ft. vertical drop and is a tribute to the Mayflower's epic journey. The costumed character George the Eagle can often be spotted in Fourth of July land, where Holidog's FunTown 7 is encircled by the Holidog Express mini-train. Rudolph's Reindeer Ranch offers toddler-friendly rides like Comet's Rockets and Prancer's Merry-Go-Round in Christmas land.

Also on site is Splashin' Safari, a safari-themed water park home to two of the world's longest water coasters, Wildebeest and Guinness World Record Holder, Mammoth.

Driving distance
320 miles from Chicago

Entry fee
$64.99/daily admission, $79.99/2-day flex ticket, free for ages 3 & under.

Lodging
Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph offers cabins and campsites a ten-minute walk from Holiday World's main entrance.

Don't Miss
Stop in and share your wishlist with Santa, who reads stories and sings Christmas songs in his cozy Storytime Theater.

CEDAR POINT

The lowdown
16 adrenaline-rushing roller coasters, including the 74mph Steel Vengeance, make Cedar Point the roller coaster capital of the world. For kids not quite ready to conquer the coasters, both Planet Snoopy and Camp Snoopy feature puppy-sized rides.

Nestled on a mile-long sandy stretch of beach on Lake Erie, Cedar Point has been thrilling visitors since it inaugurated its first ride, a water toboggan, in 1890, making it one of the oldest amusement parks in the U.S. It will likely take at least two days to conquer the park's 70+ rides spread out on over 364 acres of lakeshore.

Roller coaster fanatics love Cedar Point for its extreme roller coasters like the classic wooden Blue Streak and the steel-track Corkscrew with three inversions. Four designated kiddie areas have all the rides little ones love, like junior-sized bumper cars and two mini coasters that prep kids for the bigger coasters down the road.

Cedar Point also has an 18-acre water park and its very own beach, so you can cool off between rides.

Driving distance
A little under 300 miles from Chicago

Entry fee
$49.99/daily admission. The Cedar Point Pre-K Pass grants complimentary admission to ages 3-5.

Lodging
Maximize your time by staying on-site at the historic Hotel Breakers, located steps from the park's main gate. The all-new Castaway Bay, a Caribbean-themed hotel with an indoor waterpark, debuted in 2022.

Don't Miss
Start your day with a ride on the park's Cedar Point and Lake Erie Railroad, one of the last authentic coal-fired steam locomotives still in operation in the U.S.

SILVER DOLLAR CITY

The lowdown
Silver Dollar City is a 61-acre theme park immersed in the Ozarks in the live entertainment capital of the U.S., Branson, MO. Themed to recreate the aura of a circa 1880s mining town, the park is centered around Marvel Cave, the deepest cave in Missouri at 500 ft. below surface level.

Silver Dollar City’s eleven "districts" offer 40 thrilling rides and attractions, live shows and concerts, specialty boutiques, and over 100 craftspeople demonstrating heritage arts and crafts such as blacksmithing and basketweaving. While some coasters cater to thrill-seekers above 52 inches, like Outlaw Run, a wooden coaster with a 720-degree double barrel roll, Half Dollar Holler is a play zone designed for ages 3-7.

In the dining department, Silver Dollar City goes beyond the standard (read: greasy) theme park fare with its 18 award-winning restaurants. While BBQ reigns, Silver Dollar City's beloved skillets mix fresh veggies and handcrafted sausages in a giant iron skillet over an open fire.

No visit to Silver Dollar City is complete without a visit to its natural wonder, Marvel Cave. You'll descend 700 steps as you travel below the surface to the Cathedral Room, the largest cave entrance room in the U.S. at 204 feet. You'll then descend even further as you follow sometimes narrow passageways to the cave's other rooms. A circa 1950s cable train takes visitors 1,070 feet back up to the surface at the end of the tour.

Driving distance
550 miles from Chicago. American Airlines also operates direct flights from Chicago ORD to nearby Springfield/Branson (SGF), MO.

Entry fee
$79/ages 12-64, $69/ages 4-11, free for ages 3 & under.

Lodging
Perched high above Table Rock Lake, Chateau on the Lake offers suites with outstanding views of the surrounding Ozarks. After a busy day at Silver Dollar City, unwind at the in-hotel Spa Chateau.

Don't miss
Grandfather's Mansion is an off-the-beaten theme park path funhouse with slanting floors, wacky displays, and other dizzying effects.

Help Dad Relive His Indie Cool Days
We loved this for moms, too. Take dad to one of the nicest concert venues in the city, Forest Hills Stadium. Tucked into this leafy neighborhood of Queens (shows end early because of a noise ordinance), there’s not a bad seat in the house, and they consistently book great acts. An indie-splosion is coming to Forest Hills, including artists such as Phoebe Bridgers, Fleet Foxes, The Lumineers and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Also: the amusingly irascible Bill Burr. Take his experience up a notch and add the “Golden Apple Premium Experience” to his ticket for $99. Benefits include exclusive access to the backstage lounge at Forest Hills Stadium, two complimentary beverages, access to a private cash bar in the backstage lounge, private restrooms and early entry into the backstage lounge one hour before doors open to the general public. If that’s not fancy enough for you, consider booking a “Speakeasy Suite.”

The Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark

Kartrite Resort

At long last, The Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark is open! (The pandemic put things on pause for a bit.) Located about two hours away in The Catskills' Monticello, Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark is now the state's largest. The 80,000-square-foot space features 11 water attractions, from mild (lazy river) to thrill-inducing. Constructed with a transparent, energy-efficient Texlon roof, the space is column-free, includes a living plant wall, and kept a pleasant 84 degrees year-round. If you're too pooped to leave after riding the waves and slides, you can crash in one of the resort's many lodging options. Also, FYI, Resorts World Casino is next door, and there's a spa on site (which also offers kid's treatments).

Good to know: If you do stay a while, there's plenty else to do besides splish and splash. The resort is home to eight dining options, from grab-and-go to sit down, with many serving food made with ingredients from local suppliers. Diversions for kids include an arcade, mini bowling alley, LED-lit climbing wall, laser tag, and a VR experience. Also nearby is Holiday Mountain (10 minutes away) which has skiing and tubing in the winter and go-karts and mini-golf in the summer, and Bethel Woods, home to Woodstock Music Fest in 1969 and concert series and events today. Also: the brand new LEGOLAND Resort in Goshen, New York is a quick drive away.

Great Escape Lodge

Six Flags Great Escape

Located right by Lake George, Great Escape Lodge in the Adirondacks attracts tourists and locals alike; especially because it's part of the well-known and established Six Flags family of theme parks. Not only do fun characters like Scooby-Doo, a moose, and a fox come visit kids in the Lodge's lobby, the indoor water park is literally just off the lodging area — so you can walk from your hotel room right into the water park in your flip-flops without ever going outside.

The water park is 38,000 square feet, maintained at  a warm 82 degrees, and splashy attractions include the Tall Timbers Treehouse (great for pre-school aged kids) which features water jets, steering wheels and a gigantic water bucket above that can soak you down below at any time. Older kids can float down the "lazy river" on inflatable tubes;  splash in the lagoon, where cascading jets of water douse guests below, enjoy "Avalanche" tubing on a large raft that seats four, and twist their way down slippery slides. If you're traveling with a toddler, bring them to the mini pool area, which features very shallow water, baby swings, a baby slide, and wildlife-themed fountains. Johnny Rocket's is on site serving up burgers, and kids can blow off even more steam at the hotel's arcade.

Good to know: When booking your reservation, you can request that costumed character bring your kids some cookies before bedtime. For the parents, there's an adults-only heated spa dubbed "Soakum Spring" and if you love massages and facials, there's a day spa on-premises.

Rocking Horse Ranch

Rocking Horse Ranch

Generations of families have visited Rocking Horse Ranch, an all-inclusive resort known for its year-round outdoor horseback riding (yes, even in the middle of winter). Guests like the personalized attention they receive here, and although the Ranch's indoor water park isn't as grandiose as others, it's the perfect place to visit and enjoy in one afternoon, without the large crowds. Big Splash Indoor Water Park is kept at a comfortable 85 degrees, features a 250-foot flume for kids who can't get enough of water slides, water geysers, aqua stations with mini-slides, fountains, large dumping buckets, and more.

Good to know: They also have other winter fun like skiing and snowtubing, and the ranch is home to outdoor water slides, bungee jumping and rock climbing, should you want to make a trip in warmer months. The 2020 summer season brought a new "Outdoor Aquatic Adventure" area, with water slides, Eldorado hot springs and a zero-depth entry pool.

Great Wolf Lodge

Great Wolf Lodge

Located in the Pocono Mountains, Great Wolf Lodge offers 80,000-square-feet of space to splish and splash, and it recently wrapped up a $12 million upgrade to its facilities and hotel rooms. (We stayed in a new-and-improved room—it had a modern, woodsy-chic vibe, and ours, a suite on the top floor, had a sky-high ceiling making it feel extra roomy. Comfy beds, a small balcony, and a separate area for a couch and TV upped the cozy factor.)

Younger kids will enjoy the indoor mini-pool with spray-and-play features as well as well as a tree house to play in. Older kids gravitate towards The Big Foot Pass, where they "walk" from one end of the pool to another by hanging on to a rope and a signature water slide using a large raft called "River Canyon Run." Great Wolf is also home to twin, three-story slides that provide an escape route out of the wet Fort Mackenzie tree house, tons of slide drops, and a one-of-kind water slide/roller coaster dubbed the "Hydro Plunge." There's also two hot whirlpools (one just for adults) and "Slideboarding", in which you use thumb controls to hit LED targets and get a score after your final plunge.

Good to know: Great Wolf is super family-friendly, especially if you stay a night. (The main lobby, with its huge antler chandeliers and large fireplace, is very welcoming, and many guests—kids and adults alike—make it home, hanging out enjoying juice and jammies and vino and loungewear, respectively.) Aside from the waterpark, this space acts as "fun HQ", with everything from face-painting and balloon twisting, to story time, shows, movie screenings, and a killer pajama dance party right before bed. (Seriously, it's great.)

Great Wolf is home to lots of other ways to keep the kids entertained and busy, including a "MagiQuest" adventure that takes them on hunts using a magic wand; a buzzing arcade, kid-friendly bowling, a "Creation Station" where they can pick a stuffie to be filled; Glow Golf, and more. Great Wolf also has outdoor water play spots and a rope course, so it's also a good choice for escapes in any season.

It's also home to the Storm Chaser, the longest indoor watercoaster in the U.S.

Good to know: Camelback is also where you will find the giant outdoor waterpark, Camelbeach.  The resort offers plenty of opportunity to have fun in the snow, with a full ski resort and the largest snowtubing park in the country.

Step aside New York City, Grand Prairie’s Asia Times Square is where it’s at. As one of the largest Asian markets in the state and ranked number one for best food court in Dallas by the Dallas Observer, the shopping center is a hub for eastern dishes and goods.

For shopping that’ll give 5th Avenue competition, head to the Grand Prairie Premium Outlets and have access to over 100 different premium stores. We recommend the open-air market, Traders Village. As America’s number one marketplace, it features more than 3,500 vendors on a 161-acre site. Come for the aisles upon aisles of shopping but stay for its exhilarating amusement park, Prairie Playland.

Wow-Worthy Gastronomy

Nothing is more synonymous with the Lone Star State than BBQ–and a trip to Grand Prairie without a pit stop at Zavala’s Barbeque should be considered a crime. Listed as one of the top 50 Best BBQ joints by Texas Monthly, Zavala’s is slinging brisket, boudin, burgers, tacos and more.

To continue eating your way through town, add these mouth-watering showstoppers to your list: The Pearl, a Dim Sum Restaurant at Asia Times Square, Firehouse Gastro Park located in the town’s original #1 Fire Station and the newly rebranded Blue Sunshine Patio Bar & Grill at Joe Pool Lake.

Sports, Sports and More Sports

From football, baseball and basketball to soccer, hockey and boxing, there’s no denying that Texans love their sports…and sports complexes. For an action-packed horse-racing experience coupled with lively entertainment, schedule an outing at the Lone Star Park from April through July during the annual Triple Crown season.

Early this year, Grand Prairie will also become home to the state’s newly-formed franchise of Major League Cricket and serve as a base for the USA Cricket National team. Keep an eye out for an epic and monumental debut.

Unforgettable Shows and Live Music

For electrifying concerts and performances that the whole family will enjoy, add the Epic Theater, Uptown Theater and Texas Trust CU Theatre to your itinerary and revel in its seasonal lineup. Looking to show your kiddos what real music is all about? Stop into Forever Young Records, Texas’ largest music store. The storefront’s jukebox-designed exterior is a sight to see and serves as a wonderful photo op to commemorate your family vacation.

Speaking of photo ops, don’t leave town without stopping by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! This unique venue features five attractions all under one roof. Come face to face with lifelike figures from Hollywood, the old west, history, childhood fantasy and more. Selfies are encouraged!

Get started on booking your trip to Grand Prairie. For more information about restaurants, lodging, activities and more, head to visitgrandprairietx.com.

Dining

There is so much to do, see, eat and hear in Nashville that you might be tempted to leave the Gaylord Opryland Resort during your visit. Located in the heart of Nashville, an excursion is easy. However, with a dozen sit-down restaurants, 6 grab-and-go concepts, and two bars (a wine bar and a craft tavern that also offer snacks in addition to libation), you never really need to leave the resort if you don't want to.

You'll find Italian, Mexican, upscale steakhouse, pizza, burgers, and more, including delicious Southern food at the only Jack Daniel's restaurant in the world. Sample hand-selected “Tennessee Sippin’ Whiskey” from the distillery and give your barbecue sandwich a shot of authenticity by ordering the slaw on top.

Don't Miss: Cascades American Cafe offers well prepared fare that won't cause any dining drama with your kids (plenty of options like hamburgers and chicken tenders to choose from), and its dramatic setting in the garden atrium—with two multi-story waterfalls and surrounded by a coy-filled lagoon—means you'll enjoy a leisurely dining experience while the kids take it all in.

Entertainment

In addition to the miles of meandering hothouse paths throughout the resort's atriums, you'll find live music, a water-light show, animal encounters with naturalists, flat-bottom riverboat cruises and more—all indoors—during your stay. And if nothing else piques your interest, the incredible multi-story waterfalls are worth a visit, alone.

While You're in Nashville: Located on the banks of the Cumberland River, the hotel is near legendary Nashville attractions including the Grand Ole Opry®, Ryman Auditorium®, Wildhorse Saloon®, and the General Jackson® Showboat. And, as a hotel guest, you can purchase tickets to spend the day at the hotel's exciting indoor water park, SoundWaves.

24 Unique Vacations You Haven’t Taken Yet

20 Epic Places to Visit Before Your Kids Get Too Old

10 Unplugged Family Vacations to Take This Year

Delayed by COVID, the opening of the brand-new indoor waterpark Great Wolf Lodge in Manteca has been eagerly awaited by families all around the Bay Area. Just an hour’s drive from the Bay Area, Great Wolf Lodge is the ultimate water park experience that families have been looking for. For the month of October, a Howl-O-Ween celebration with trick-or-treating, a monster dance bash, arts and crafts and more will get the kids in the Halloween spirit. With 500 hotel rooms and suites, your family can wake up and be on a water slide in no time! We explored it all to give you the inside scoop and (spoiler) the only negative was having to pry the kids away to go home!

The Water Park

Great Wolf Lodge

Great Wolf Lodge’s main attraction is their indoor water park that is heated to a balmy 84F year-round. Admission is included in your hotel stay with access beginning at 1 p.m. the day of check-in. Fort Mackenzie, the multi-level water play structure, greets your family at the entrance with its multiple slides: toddler-appropriate slides on the lower levels and higher, longer slides for the more adventurous up top. A 1,000-gallon tipping bucket dumps its contents every three to four minutes so be sure the kids stand right underneath for the full effect!

Christine Lai

The multi-rider raft slide River Canyon Run bonds the entire family in a thrilling and twisting wet journey while Wolf’s Tail plummets its riders down a vertical 20-foot free fall when the floor drops out from underneath. Once your heart rate returns to normal, relax in the lazy river, wave pool, activity pool, zero-depth toddler splash area, oversized resort-style outdoor pool (can we say ‘pool’ one more time?) or one of the many other water/tube slides.

Things to know:
-Lifejackets are available and highly recommended for children 42” and below
-The Watering Hole, with its strategic location, serves adult beverages and slushies. If you’re like me, you will cycle between here and Dunkin’.
-The water park was least crowded about one hour before closing (at 7 p.m.)

The Adventure Park

Great Wolf Lodge

If your crew is ready for a break from the water park, fun is also to be had on dry land! Great Wolf Lodge boasts an exclusive, live-action-adventure game called MagiQuest in which participants wander the lodge using a wand to join tribes, befriend magical creatures and defeat the enemy. A mini version is also available for younger players five and under.

Christine Lai

At the center of the adventure park is a multi-level rope course that is suspended above a mini-golf course because...why not? The Ten Paw Bowling alley with its shorter lanes and smaller balls means even the shortest of bowlers can get in on the action after they mine for gemstones at Oliver’s Mining Co. Add a visit to the arcade and Build-A-Bear workshop to complete an epic day any kid will rave about.

Things to know:
-Attraction passes bundle the activities to save money
-Free activities also abound! Story time, mural shows, family yoga, late-night dance parties, arts and crafts and character appearances by (friendly) wolves Wiley and Violet occur throughout the day. Check the daily schedule for times/locations
-It takes on average three hours to play one game of MagicQuest but can be continued at a later time
-Camp Howl is located inside Build-A-Bear and offers a quiet respite for coloring and reading from the hubbub
-We found the Adventure Park to be the least crowded between the hours of 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Time to Eat

Great Wolf Lodge

All this activity will surely work up an appetite and Great Wolf Lodge has options galore with nine different eateries. Feed your pack pizza from Hungry as a Wolf or stop by Freshwoods Market for grab ‘n go premade meals. Conveniently located within the water park, Timbers (burgers, hot dogs and chicken tenders) and Buckets the Taco Bus means you can order and eat while still swimsuit-clad.

Christine Lai

Barnwood serves up locally sourced craft cocktails and shareable plates and your pack’s sweet tooth can be satisfied at either the Great Wolf Candy Company or Wood’s End Creamery where your hardest choice (after which flavor) is a cup or a cone?

Things to know:
-Pre-purchasing a dining package will help with savings
-Use their mobile app to order for contactless dining
-There is a Costco next door. Just sayin’.

Time to Sleep

Great Wolf Lodge

When it's time for the pack to curl up for the day, Great Wolf Lodge offers a variety of lodging arrangements that can be divided into three main categories. The standard Family Suite sleeps between four and five with two queen beds and a pull-out couch. Themed suites provide a separate sleeping area for kids complete with wall paintings, murals and bunk beds. Premium suites offer the most spacious accommodations with at least two bedrooms or adjoining rooms sleeping between eight and 13 guests. Any of the accommodations will guarantee that your family will awaken refreshed, ebullient and ready to do it all over again!

There may not be a more magical way to take advantage of a school-free schedule than at a Disney park. At Disneyland, the weather’s just about always lovely, so find out when your school district has its winter or spring breaks—and book your family’s trip before or after to lessen the crowds. You may think it’s a trip to save for when the kids are a little older, but there is plenty for all ages to enjoy—and this may be the stage when the kids are most willing to believe in all the magic. We know how expensive it can be, too, so we have tons of ways to save so you can feel like you’ve made the most of it.

Insider's tip: We rounded up 16 hidden secrets of Disneyland (like where to pick up those baby essentials you may have forgotten at home).

Boulder, CO

City of Boulder

One (of many) fantastic things about a high-elevation destination is all that can happen in a day just when it comes to weather. If you need a fleece in the morning during the fall months, you’ll be in a t-shirt by the afternoon thanks to your proximity to that glorious sun. And much of what is wonderful about Boulder in the summer is still accessible to families in the fall, from letting the tots scale the boulders in Arapahoe Ridge Park to a kid-friendly hike by the Flatirons. Football season, of course, is only in the fall and is when downtown Boulder is the stage for Pearl Street Stampedes. The University of Colorado's Golden Buffalo Marching Band performs while cheerleaders dance and the football team tosses out toy footballs from an antique fire truck that leads a parade. Locals and kids alike call this a favorite fall tradition. Check out all of our other favorite mountain towns to explore year round here.

Insider’s tip: If you visit right after school is back in session, you’ll have Boulder Creek more to yourself for warm-weather tubing!

Adirondack Park—Northville, NY

Vijay Kalakoti via Flickr

When the playgroup asks if you went to the park on your trip Upstate, your tots will be able to say that, yes, in fact, they visited the biggest park in the country. Well, the continental United States, but who’s counting? (If you are counting, however, the park—not to be confused with a state or national park—boasts 6,000,000 acres!). And in the fall, that adds up to a lot of changing leaves. If the kids fell asleep, you won’t even have to get out of the car for one of 14 drives that meander through some seriously epic fall foliage. For other favorite places around the country to see fall colors, check out our list.

Insider's tip: There is wildlife galore to keep an eye out for: moose, fox, river otters, flying squirrels, beavers, skunks and black bears! Did we mention flying squirrels?

Bethany Beach, DE

Jennifer Massoni Pardini

If you live in the Mid-Atlantic region, you know summer at the beach can mean big crowds and tons of traffic. But if you wait until fall, the beach can be yours. Even during peak season, Bethany Beach is a lower-key choice than big regional draws like Rehoboth or Virginia Beach. Both the Boardwalk and main drag of Garfield Parkway are easy strolls for short-legged travelers, with plenty of souvenir stores still open and places to duck into for French Fries or ice cream. Bethany Beach also decks out its streets for the season, making for a sweet photo-opp with pumpkins and fall decor. And if the wind picks up, just pop into Bethany Beach Books and while away some time in its darling children’s section.

Insider's tip: Tidepool Toys & Games right on the Boardwalk is a great place to grab marked-down beach toys, and they have a well-stocked Thomas the Train table inside to keep toddlers entertained.

White Sands National Monument, NM

The U.S. is rich in natural wonders, and every single state has amazing national parks to explore. Most will have fewer crowds to contend with when you avoid traveling in the summer months, but that can also put you into some inclement weather depending on when you travel. The southwest is a good bet in the fall to avoid crowds and the highest temps! And instead of miles to hike (which can be a lot to ask of the under-five set), White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico has acres of soft sand dunes! So pack or purchase a sled at the Visitor Center, slather on the sunscreen, and slide on down—again and again, as your tot is bound to want to do! There are also kid-friendly boardwalks for exploring the dunes without getting sand in your shoes. If you’re looking for family-friendly national parks in another neck of the woods, check out our whole round-up of the best national parks for families.

Great Wolf Lodge—Nationwide

Jennifer Massoni Pardini

You may think your kids need to be mermaids to fully take advantage of an indoor waterpark like Great Wolf Lodge. But rising swimmers and life vest-wearing tots can splash-a-plenty in the areas designed especially with toddlers in mind, like the zero-entry Cub Paw Pool and Fort Mackenzie’s splash pad. With 19 locations currently across the country, from Grapevine, TX to Manteca, CA, there’s likely a lodge near you.

Insider's Tip: You can start the fun three hours before check-in and keep it up ALL DAY after your 11 a.m. check-out. That’s right, the lodge is still yours until closing (or at least until nap time, a perfect time to hit the road with a happily exhausted pack). Talk about a paw-some perk.

Mount Rainier, WA

Rachael Brandon

New England, while stunning, certainly doesn’t have the market cornered when it comes to breathtaking fall foliage. If you check out Mount Rainier in the fall, not only will the summer mountaineering crowds have died down, but there will also be a blanket of reds, yellows, and greens laid out at the base of the mountain. There’s an 800-year-old Douglas fir log to checkout, the Trail of Shadows is recommended for tot trekkers (it’s under a mile), interactive exhibits await at the local visitor centers, and a gondola ride is a must. You’ll marvel at all the incredible views along the way.

Insider's tip: If your littles aren’t quite mountaineers, there is still so much to do thanks to these inspiring itineraries for families, whether you have 10 hours or 48 to explore.

Indiana Dunes, IN
