If there’s one thing parents have in common, it’s that most of us have dealt with a picky eater at one time or another. Now, a fellow mom may have solved the problem.

In a recent Facebook post, Jane Stine shared a photo of a spaghetti squash with a Winnie the Pooh sticker. “You know how kids always want Paw Patrol yogurt or Disney waffles or whatever? Bring your own stickers to the grocery store and start sticking.”

The hack is simple: just take some of your kiddos favorite character stickers to the grocery store and use them on fruits and veggies. When they see (insert character)-“brand” produce, they’ll hopefully be more interested in eating it!

The post, which has already been shared over 100,000 times is garnering praise from parents everywhere.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced the approval of a breakthrough in ear tube technology. The new system allows doctors to insert the tubes under local anesthesia in the office.

Forget about general anesthesia and a trip to the hospital’s OR. The Rubes Under Local Anesthesia, a.k.a. Tula system, may make this all-too-common procedure easier on everyone.

Jeff Shuren, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health said, in a press release, “Today’s approval offers patients an option for the treatment of recurrent ear infections that does not require general anesthesia. As millions of children suffer from ear infections every year, it is important to have safe and effective treatments available to this susceptible patient population.”

Shuren continued, “This approval has the potential to expand patient access to a treatment that can be administered in a physician’s office with local anesthesia and minimal discomfort.”

The system, which is approved for children over the age of six months was tested on 222 pediatric patients. Researchers found the tubes have an 86 percent success rate in children under age five and an 89 percent success rate in the five to 12-year age group.

Why Do Babies Hiccup? It May Have to Do with Brain Development

As a child in Northern California, I was lucky enough to live about 10 minutes away from a real Christmas tree farm. Since my mom worked as a nurse on the weekends, it usually fell to my dad to take my two younger sisters and me to look for “our tree” on a chilly Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I remember it vividly—hot chocolate and snacks, wandering through Christmas trees, that pine-fresh scent, looking for holes and bent branches or anything else that might keep a tree from being ours that season.

Once we’d found “our tree,” Dad would do all the sawing, transporting, paying and tying to the roof while I kept my younger siblings busy. We’d drive it home, drag it in, and get it set up. Sometimes there’d be an issue, like the time we got it set up in the stand and got half the ornaments on before we realized it was crooked. Or the time we had to cut the top off because we’d measured wrong. But no matter what, hunting for the most perfect Christmas tree was TRADITION. Getting a real tree, with slippery needles and a scent that no candle can truly replicate, and even the responsibility of watering it (yup there’s a story for the time we forgot to water for a week); all of these things meant the holiday season for my family.

My father died eight years ago. He’s not around to hear how his grandkids get the same thrill when they pick out their “perfect tree” the same way his daughter did, and I can’t tell him I now understand the parental joy of watching my kids make memories. What I can do is share memories of my father with my kids. I can share the sweet along with the silly, like the time he was so frustrated when he couldn’t get that (insert expletive here) tree tied to the car, or how he wouldn’t stop working until our tree was secured and the lights were draped, so we could decorate it without having to wait another day.

These memories I share with my kids (highlights from a recent Christmas below) keep my father’s memory alive and help my kids get to know him, even if he’s no longer with us. And each year, with each live tree, with every strand of lights and every ornament we unwrap, and even in every pine needle I find months after the fact, I take comfort in the fact that I can still see and feel a little bit of my dad, too.

Now through Christmas, share a photo of your family’s REAL Christmas tree memory-making experience for a chance to win $1,000!

The season of gratitude and thanks is right around the corner, and if you’re anything like us, you’re constantly trying to find easy and fun ways to teach your kids how to be thankful. Enter Turkey on the Table—created by two moms in hopes of helping their kids understand what it means to give back, and why it’s so important. This little guy is about to pop up everywhere, so here’s what you need to know.

What It Is

Turkey on the table is a fun new Thanksgiving tradition that was created by two moms determined to instill gratitude in their young children. It comes with “feathers,” that are meant for family members to write down their messages of gratitude until the turkey is fully dressed and ready to be on display during the big day. There are even adorable hats, feather refills, and crafting kits to make those feathers shine.

How It Works

All throughout the month of November, family members come together to recognize and record what they are thankful for, and write it on a paper feather. Simply insert the feather into the turkey’s tail, and by the time Thanksgiving rolls around, he’s got a full tail! Turkey on the Table also comes with a book that helps to explain to kids the process of giving back and being grateful. Plus, with every turkey purchased, 10 meals are donated to families in need in partnership with Feeding America. The goal this year is to reach 1 million donations. Says founders Kerry Maunus and April George, “We hope to encourage the tradition of Turkey on the Table, and conversations about gratitude & giving back in people’s homes.”

Available at amazon.com, $39.84 and up.

It’s 6:00 p.m., I’m getting my daughter in the shower, it’s just another regular night. Except…it isn’t. She says “Mom, my armpits stink”. Naturally, I’m thinking there’s no way. She’s only 7 years old. I take a whiff just to amuse her, and sure enough…there’s the slightest smell indicating she should probably start wearing deodorant. It wasn’t very strong, but it was enough.

I’m freaking out. She’s ecstatic. She’s a big girl and gets to wear deodorant now. I’m nearly hyperventilating because…how do I explain this to my 7-year-old? Do I have the puberty talk with her? Do I go into detail? I gave her a shower and got her settled on her bed. She was blissfully unaware of what I was about to explain to her. Here, in bullet form, I have neatly laid out for you the list of what to expect from puberty in girls:

  • Body odor
  • Acne
  • Hormones (insert eye roll here)
  • Breast Development
  • Hair growth
  • PMS
  • Periods

That’s just a short list. By the time I had finished listing and explaining the first few, my daughter’s eyes were as wide as saucers. Great. Had I already messed that one up? I thought to myself…”I didn’t expect to have this conversation today. I haven’t even had time to Google anything!”

Amid my internal freak out session, I stopped myself. I didn’t want the words coming out of my mouth to be from somebody else. I wanted to explain to her what I thought was the best way. I finally explained (lightly) about periods and why girls have them and what happens when they do. I didn’t have the sex conversation. That, I feel, she is still too young for but I shared my experience with my first period and explained to her that I was telling her so that if she saw blood one day, she would understand why and that it was okay.

Puberty doesn’t have to be something that girls are afraid of. The more comfortable we can make them with it, the easier the transition will be for them. Girls have a hard enough time with puberty and bodily changes, but especially ones that are ahead or behind their peers. They just need a gentle reminder that even though their armpits stink, we still love them.

Hey, y'all! I'm a single mom to my seven year old daughter. I've loved writing all of my life, and love to share stories...most of which relate to parenting. Also sometimes our cat...Sir Gibson Severus Darcy. Yeah...it's a thing. Enjoy!

Cloth diapering is making a comeback with modern parents due to its many benefits to the environment, the budget, and baby’s comfort. There is a common misconception that cloth diapering requires a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be that hard.

If you are prepared – both with your supplies and knowledge of what to expect – just about every parent can succeed with cloth diapering.

Types of Cloth Diapers

In order to be prepared, you will need to know that there are actually several types of cloth diapers. While they all work in a similar manner, the type you choose can make a difference in the ease of diapering and the impact on your overall budget.

There are two main components to a cloth diaper: the diaper itself and the insert. The insert is the absorbent part, making it necessary for keeping the outer diaper as clean as possible as well as your baby’s clothes.

Some diaper types – like flats that you have to fold and fasten yourself – aren’t as popular today as they were many years ago. Most parents today opt for something more modern, like the pocket diaper or sleeve diaper (both work the same way), which fits like a disposable with a small pocket to slip the absorbent insert into.

All-in-one diapers are the premium choice for parents who want a quick and easy diaper change. They just have one part with no insert to deal with. The biggest downside to these, however, is the fact that they take so long to dry since the absorbent part is very thick.

You may choose to take a step down and go with a two-in-one diaper. They are easier than other diapers with inserts that need to be folded since the insert is simply a piece that snaps into the diaper.

The Good

Cloth diapering can be a solution for common issues that affect you and your baby personally as well as issues that have a greater impact on the environment.

First, cloth diapering is eco-friendly. Yes, it may take a bit more water to wash them, but the big difference is found in the landfills. Though disposable diapers do break down with oxygen and sunlight, they don’t decompose very efficiently in a landfill. Using cloth diapers keeps our landfills cleaner.

Not only are cloth diapers easier on the landfills but they are also easier on the wallet. It may be a bit difficult to swallow the initial cost of supplies, but if you look at what it would cost to keep your child in disposable versus cloth diapers until they are ready to potty train, you would be looking at saving at least $1,000 (over a period of 2.5 years).

Finally, cloth diapering can be a solution for babies who may have sensitive skin or allergies. Disposable diapers can be scratchy and made with materials that can irritate the skin and make your baby fussy; cloth diapers are much softer. You can also wash cloth diapers with the same gentle detergents you use for your baby’s cloths to help eliminate irritants.

The Bad and The Ugly…And How to Make it Pretty

While all these things are well and good, there are still some inconveniences that come with cloth diapering. But if you know how to handle them or the tricks to make them easier, these inconveniences won’t bother you as much.

It is true that cloth diapers are a bit messier than disposable ones. They aren’t as absorbent (thanks to the absence of synthetic gels and substances that absorb liquid in disposables – a positive!) which means you may have a few more messes to clean up.

Diaper changes aren’t as easy either since you will have to scrape poop into the toilet and rinse diapers before you can put them in the laundry – not to mention how often you will have to do laundry in order to keep up with your diapering needs.

So, how do we make these things better?

First, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can ease your way into cloth diapering by just using disposables sometimes. You can also use a hybrid diaper which combines the best of both worlds – a washable cover with a flushable insert.

Flushable liners can also take the work out of scraping poop into the toilet. All you have to do is wrap up the dirty stuff and throw it in the toilet with the liner. Unless there’s a blowout, there’s no mess on the actual diaper to clean.

Is Cloth Diapering RIght for You?

The decision to cloth diaper is one only you can make. Every family is different.

There are many that still prefer the convenience of a disposable diaper. There’s no denying that they are easier to travel with and take a lot of the mess out of diaper changing. And there is nothing wrong with parents who make this decision; it is what works best for them.

Cloth diapering does take a little more commitment and discipline. But if you choose the right diaper for your lifest‌yle and have a good stock of them, cloth diapering can be just as easy as disposables.
