Some of our favorite brands have introduced new infant car seats this year, and we can’t wait to tell you about them. You’ll find them below, along with highly rated car seats from years past. Read on to find a safe and comfortable ride for your baby, along with tips on how to use your new car seat.

5 Pro Tips When Choosing an Infant Car Seat

iStock

1. Try out your car seat in your car to make sure it fits well.

2. Select an infant car seat and stroller that are compatible with one another, or check if there’s an adapter that allows you to use them together.

3. If baby will commonly travel in more than one car, consider buying a second base so you don’t have to reinstall the base each time baby is traveling in a different car.

4. Read your manual to find out the height and weight maximums for your car seat so you know when to purchase a convertible car seat.

5. If your car seat comes with an infant insert, find out when to take out that extra padding to keep baby comfortable.

6. Before your baby takes their first ride, visit a car seat inspection station to confirm that you've installed your seat correctly. They can also help you install one if you're having trouble. Find a car seat inspection station near you.

Nuna PIPA lite r and PIPA rx

Nuna

Nuna has released two new infant car seats this year: the PIPA lite r and PIPA rx. The lite r (shown above) is super light (just 5.3 pounds without the infant insert or canopy), thanks to aerospace aluminum and feather-weight fabrics. The PIPA rx doesn't require a car seat base, making it easier to bring baby in a taxi or in others' cars. It also boasts a Dream Drape, which attaches quietly with magnets for shaded car-seat snoozes. The materials on both car seats are flame-resistant and contain no added fire-retardant chemicals. And both have a removable, two-position UPF 50+ canopy with flip-out eyeshade, four-position recline and side-impact protection. The included RELX car seat base contains a stability leg to absorb impact and reduce force transferred to baby in the event of a collision.

Available at nunababy.com, $399.95 for the PIPA lite r plus RELX base; $349.95 for the PIPA rx plus RELX base.

Clek Liingo Infant Car Seat

Clek

An infant car seat that doesn't require a base? This is a game-changer, especially for families who don't have or use a car regularly. The Liingo comes with LATCH connectors on the car seat carrier but can also be attached via the seat belt, and it can be used with the brand's infant car seat base, if desired. The Liingo is compatible with several stroller brands and can be detached from the stroller easily, thanks to a one-handed quick release. There's a three-position SPF 100+ sun canopy for sun safety, as well as a mesh peekaboo window for airflow and visibility into the car seat. Made in Canada, this innovative car seat comes in three fabrics, including a fire-retardant Merino wool, and can be sent back to the company through the brand's recycling program when you're done with it.

Available at clekinc.com, $199-$299.

Chicco KeyFit and KeyFit30 Infant Car Seats

Chicco

You can’t go wrong with the Chicco KeyFit or Chicco KeyFit 30. These car seats are a longtime fave of parents and Consumer Reports because they're easy to use and offer key features for baby’s safety and comfort, including: a removable newborn head and body support, a removable shade canopy, a carrier shell with EPS energy-absorbing foam for crash protection, and a two-position carry handle. The KeyFit and KeyFit 30 have the same features and use the same base. The primary difference is the weight limit: The KeyFit is suitable for babies up to 22 pounds, while the KeyFit 30 goes up to 30 pounds. As a result, the KeyFit 30 costs a bit more.

Available at chiccousa.com, $159.99 (KeyFit) and $199.99 (KeyFit 30).

UPPAbaby MESA

This stylish car seat is equally focused on safety: The base contains a visual indicator that changes from red to green when it has been installed correctly. The car seat has an adjustable headrest with side impact protection to minimize head trauma in the event of a collision. Other clever touches include small pockets on either side to hold the open belt buckle; this both simplifies getting baby into the seat and keeps the metal buckles cool on hot days. For an additional cost, you can purchase a travel bag to protect your car seat on flights and a handy cabana to keep out rain, wind and bugs.

Available at uppababy.com, $299.99-$349.99.

Cybex Aton 2

Cybex

The Aton 2 weighs less than 9 pounds, which makes it easier to carry and install than some of its peers. Although it’s lightweight, it has packed in a lot of safety and design features. This seat comes with an infant inlay for comfort, side impact protection and boasts a straightforward installation to help you install it quickly and properly. There’s a sleek foldable canopy, and the instruction manual stores underneath the seat so you always know where to find it when you need it.

Available at cybex-online.com, $279.95.

Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4-35

Peg Perego

There’s great attention to detail in this car seat, from the Italian textiles and tailoring to the compact carry handle that makes it easier to insert and remove from your car. The EPS-lined shell enhances safety protection and is perforated for air circulation to increase baby’s comfort. The seat offers infinite recline with an indicator to help you find the right seat angle as your child grows. Extras include a seat cover that increases warmth on chilly days and cools baby down in the heat, a travel bag and an igloo that fits over the car seat on the coldest days.

Available at buybuybaby.com, $299.99.

Nuna PIPA

We love the dream drape that pulls out from the canopy and shades baby from light to help them fall (and stay) asleep, as well as the mesh peekaboo window on the canopy to help you keep an eye on baby. The removable UPF 50+ canopy also features a flip-out eyeshade and can be set in two positions. This sleek car seat also features side impact protection, and it can be easily installed either with the base or without if needed for taxis and travel. Extras include a rain cover and wheeled travel bag.

Available at nuna.eu, $299.95.

Doona

Integrated wheels turn the Doona car seat into a stroller in seconds, making this the perfect purchase for city dwellers and families on the go. The wheels then tuck up under the car seat for easy placement into your car. The unique construction adds a level of safety in the car, with the stroller handle absorbing impact in case of a collision. Like the other car seats on this list, the Doona provides side impact protection and comes with an infant insert, and it’s made in nine stylish colors. Extras include a padded travel bag, protective cover, vehicle seat protector, insect net, sunshade extension, rain cover and snap-on storage bag. While the car seat is pricier than others on this list, the addition of a stroller adds cost savings and tons of convenience until baby sizes out to a convertible car seat.

Available at shopdoona.com, $499.

Britax B-Safe 35

An impact-absorbing base, impact-stabilizing steel frame and side impact protection are just some of the valuable safety features on this Britax car seat. Additional features simplify the process of installing the car seat, attaching and removing the seat from the base, adjusting the straps and reclining the seat to your desired angle.

Available at amazon.com, $199.99.

Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30

Maxi-Cosi

Car seats are notoriously messy spots, and Mico Max 30 has that covered: The seat pad is machine-washable and dryer safe, easy to remove and replace (without rethreading the harness, a big plus), and the fabric is self-wicking, drawing away liquid from the skin to keep baby dry and comfortable. This car seat is also lightweight at only 8.2 pounds and comes with side impact protection, an extended canopy with flip-out visor, and an ergonomic handle for carrying comfort, an infant insert and a foot muff to keep baby warm in cold weather.

Available on amazon.com, $199.

Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35

Graco

Graco's car seat boasts a secure install in just three easy steps, thanks to its SnugLock technology. The car-seat base is adjustable with four recline positions to help you get a good fit in your car, and it features a level indicator to ensure a correct angle. There's removable support for an infant's head and body, and a rotating canopy for shade and sun protection. It attaches securely to Graco’s Click Connect strollers in one easy step.

Available at gracobaby.com, $149.99.

Evenflo LiteMax 35

Evenflo

From the machine-washable seat pad and removable head and seat pillows to the four recline options and buckle pockets for baby’s comfort, this lightweight car seat ticks a lot of boxes for baby's comfort and parents' convenience. It doesn’t skimp on safety either, as Evenflo reports it meets or exceeds all applicable federal safety standards, as well as side impact and rollover test standards. It’s budget-friendly and comes in six color combinations.

Available at evenflo.com, $150.

He’s Here! Shawn Johnson East Shares Emotional Birth Story of Baby Two

Toting little ones from car to place to car and back can be tricky, not to mention with a sleeping babe on your hands. You know they are going to wake up as soon as you unbuckle that car seat! We have just the trick up our sleeve…err…Maxi-Cosi® does! Their innovative Coral™ XP car seat features a lightweight carrier with a shoulder strap, so you can get on with your day with a lot more ease and a whole lot less effort—it’s like they read our minds! Read on to learn more about what makes this car seat perfect for on-the-go families.

This Brand Gets Parents

We love that Maxi-Cosi® is designed for parents, by parents. They’re out here trying to make our lives easier, and we are here for it! It’s a brand we know and trust to bring us the most innovative products like the new Coral™ XP that takes stress of our plate (and makes us look good doing it!). Maxi-Cosi® is the total package: style, quality, affordability, convenience and innovation. Wow, BFF much?

This Car Seat Is a Parent’s Dream (IRL)

The Maxi-Cosi® Coral™ XP is the first-ever integrated car seat and carrier nesting system that’s built to help parents get up and go effortlessly. What does that mean? Maxi-Cosi® came up with the brilliant idea to put a lightweight carrier inside of their car seat, so you don’t have to fuss with unbuckling and buckling your little one as you get things done! This ultra-handy carrier is removed from the car seat’s outer shell with the touch of a button for seamless transitions for your (hopefully) sleepy little one. The padded handles are retractable, and the carrier features a first-of-its-kind cross body flex-strap for comfort and control. The Coral™ XP is for babies starting at 4lbs and it’s also stroller compatible. It’s like they thought of everything!

Carry Four Different Ways

One day calls for all-hands-on-deck (your two hands, at least!), and others a stroller. Maxi-Cosi® has you covered. The Coral™ XP allows you to keep your baby close with four ways to carry. Our favorite is the the cross-body strap—the only one of its kind! The car seat insert turns into a safe and cozy portable baby sanctuary, all while keeping your two hands free. Now you can shop, type that email you’ve been meaning to send or sip that coffee that’s been sitting there so long it’s cold.

Then there’s the handle carry. Simply grab both sides of the padded handles, push the release button and pull out the lightweight inner carrier. Great for toting sleepyheads from the car to the crib.

Sometimes only the whole shebang will do, so of course, there’s the standard carry. The inner carrier with the car seat shell is a combined weight that rivals standard infant carries. When you need to travel with your Coral™ XP, Maxi-Cosi® literally has you back by not breaking it.

And finally, stroller compatibility! The Coral™ XP is also a travel system, clipping into a range of premium strollers. There’s even an inner carrier adapter, so you can leave the car seat shell in the car—genius!

Saftey

It might as well be their middle name. For 35 years, Maxi-Cosi® has been setting and then outdoing global standards for safety. Of course, the Coral™ XP falls right in line with their strict standards, meeting and exceeding all government safety standards. We guess you could say they’re overachievers when it comes to safety, and we wouldn’t want it any other way!

Once you start offering your baby water at the 6-month mark, you can use a sippy cup, 360 cup or straw cup instead of a bottle. While sippy spouts (especially soft ones) are often easier for transitioning away from a bottle, many doctors also recommend straw cups as they help with speech and oral development. You’ll probably end up trying a few to find a favorite, but with our help, maybe you’ll nail it on the first try.

Nuby 360 Edge 2 Stage Drinking Rim Cup

Nuby

Kid can drink from any part of this 360-edge drinking cup, topped in soft silicone. New drinkers grip the two handles and guide the cup to their mouths. Detach the handles when your child has the hang of grasping the tumbler instead. With only two parts and a transparent cup and rim, it's easy to clean. Pop on the hygienic cover to keep it clean when not in use.

Available at amazon.com, $6.99.

Tommee Tippee Insulated Sippee Toddler Cup

These 9-ounce insulated tumblers keep drinks cool and limit messes thanks to a spill-proof valve. The soft spout is easy for toddlers to drink from and gentle on teething gums. They're dishwasher-safe and free of BPA, BPS and phthalates. And the bright colors guarantee they won't get lost in the bottom of your diaper bag.

Available at amazon.com, $14.21.

ezpz Mini Cup & Straw Training System

So many smart features turn this cup into a training system, helping your child learn to use a straw and drink from an open cup. The kid-size cup is made from no-slip silicone and angled on the inside for a more even flow of liquid. It has a weighted base with bumps to keep the cup from falling over. The straw also features small bumps to decrease tongue suckling and promote rounding the lips, and the curve in the straw promotes lip and jaw closure. Flip the straw upside down for more advanced sipping, and then move on to the open cup.

Available at ezpzfun.com, $14.99.

Dr. Brown's Stage 1 Soft-Spout Transition Cup

This compact cup is perfect for baby’s first attempts at sipping like a big kid. They’ll love the soft spout that reminds them of a bottle's nipple and handles they can easily grip. You'll love that leaking is minimal and it comes with a flip top to keep it clean when you toss it in the diaper bag or stroller.

Available at drbrownsbaby.com, $5.99.

Joovy Dood Training Cup & Insulator

If you prefer a hard spout style, this 7-ounce cup is a good choice. The mouthpiece is specifically designed to help protect gums and the palate while babies are teething. It's insulated so it keeps beverages colder longer. And you can even freeze liquids in the cup, which is perfect for extended trips.

Available at joovy.com, $14.99.

Miniware 1-2-3 Sip!

Little ones can drink three different ways with the adaptable 1-2-3 Sip! from Miniware. Start your baby out with the silicone straw insert, then level up to the non-drip spouted lid (just the right size for tots), and, finally, graduate to the open cup. The easy-on-the-eyes cup is made out of plant-based bamboo fiber and vegetable starch material and has major minimalist appeal.

Available at miniware.com, $18.

Pura Kiki Straw Bottle with Sleeve

Once your baby has some practice drinking from a smaller cup, we love this stainless steel option that’s completely free of plastic. The 11-ounce bottle keeps beverages cool, and an outer sleeve (available in 6 colors) means little hands won't freeze while holding it. Another awesome feature: Many standard nipples and sippy spouts also fit on the cup, so you can ease the transition and offer milk as well.

Available at purastainless.com, $19.99.

Dr. Brown’s Baby’s 1st Straw Cup

Once your baby has mastered a soft-spout, it’s on to straw cups! The flexible, weighted straw on this 9-ounce cup means that babes can sip from any angle. The attached lid is super convenient when you’re on-the-go, and the cup even comes with its own brush to keep things clean.

Available at drbrownsbaby.com, $6.99.

Lollacup Sippy Cup

The Lollacup can make the learning-to-drink process easier thanks to a weighted straw that helps draw water, or even a smoothie, up and into the tube no matter which way the cup is tilted. The materials are all BPA-free, BPS-free, and phthalate-free for super-safe sipping. And the cup "chick" wins major points for being so adorable and coming in seven cool colors.

Available at lollaland.com, $16.

Green Sprouts Glass Sip & Straw Cup

Here's another plastic-free cup with tons of drinking options. It's made out of glass and has an outer plastic shield with handles and a non-slip, shock-absorbing base to prevent breakage. The cup comes with a silicone straw, but you can purchase additional tops with soft and hard spouts for versatile sipping.

Available at greensproutsbaby, $19.99.

Oxo Soft Spout Sippy Cup Set with Training Lid

This clever set helps babies transition from the bottle and then to drinking from a cup without a top. First, introduce the sippy with the hard top and handles. Later, ditch the handles and switch the lid to one that functions pretty much like a regular cup. A special insert with perforated edges will control the flow of water, to everyone's relief! Once your child has the hang of that, remove the insert and your big kid can drink from a grown-up cup.

Available at oxo.com, $10.99.

Munchkin Miracle 360 Trainer Cup

Here's a great option for learning to drink from a spout- and straw-free cup. This trainer cup allows kids to tip and drink from any side (as they would from a regular cup), and it magically seals when they stop drinking. Another plus: You don't have to clean small straws and valve parts. What’s more, Munchkin has made a new line of “Wild Love” cups featuring threatened species like the polar bar and African elephant to support animal welfare efforts.

Available at munchkin.com, $7.

Thinkbaby Thinkster of Steel

As the first company to offer a BPA-free baby bottle, Thinkbaby knows how important safe sipping is for families with young children. The offerings now include the ultra-safe Thinkster of Steel, which can transform a stainless cup from a baby bottle to a sippy to a straw cup with the simple twist of a cap. We love the straw option with a cross-cut design that means no messy spills. And, even better, a portion of the purchase price can go toward a charity such as Save the Whales.

Available at gothinkbaby.com, $13.99.

Tommee Tippee Easiflow 360

Fill your child’s Easiflow 360 with something to sip on, and you’ll be thrilled to see them drinking out of a “big kid” cup. The spout-free design is great for learning how to drink out of a cup and is good for oral development. The single-piece valve is simple to clean and the cup comes in 7-ounce (with handles) and 8-ounce (without handles) options and in single cups or packs of two.

Available at tommeetippee.us, $12.99.

Tommee Tippee No-Knock Cup

Ready to quit cleaning up spilled milk? Thought so! Here’s a cup that simply won’t dump over, even when toys and elbows knock into it left and right. The base sticks to any smooth surface, but the cup easily lifts when pulled upward for drinking.

Available at tommeetippee.us, $12.99.

Need a cool dessert that doubles as an activity? Turn to these frozen chocolate bananas. Opt to make them exactly like the recipe below or sub in sprinkles or other toppings in place of the pecan halves. Either way, this deceptively simple dessert will be a hit.

frozen bananas

Ingredients
2 large bananas, peeled
4 popsicle sticks
1 c milk chocolate chips
3/4 c pecan halves, finely chopped

Method
1. Cut each banana in half, and insert popsicle sticks into bottoms of each half. Freeze bananas for 1 hour until solid.

2. Place chocolate in a small microwave-proof bowl and heat on medium heat for 15 seconds at a time until well melted and smooth. (You can also use a double boiler to melt the chocolate down if you have one.)

3. Dip the frozen bananas in chocolate so they are completely coated, then generously roll in chopped nuts. Serve immediately or re-freeze for a few hours later.

Note: You can fashion a working double boiler by using a small pot of water and a Pyrex bowl.

1. I wish someone, somewhere on the famous “Google” would put “this is not a death sentence.” I know it sounds so wacky and probably over the top to some, but anytime some kind of diagnosis is presented, it’s just natural for parents to worry about the long term effects it could bring! I’ve mentioned it here before, but I myself, was uneducated about the world of ASD before we were catapulted in, like one of those pumpkin launchers at a pumpkin patch. And instantly worried that it somehow immediately changed his life expectancy. Don’t fall into this false narrative. And your child’s life is not “less than” because they have a diagnosis delivered.

2. I wish diagnosis came with a big mandatory packet of “this is what the hell you do next” inside it. After all those evaluations, and after the 500 fights to be really seen, there is no “next step.” There’s no pamphlet, or hand-out to instruct you on obtaining services for your child to help them excel. There’s no one holding a sign that says “Need assistance with funding all the incoming therapies and appointments necessary? We can help.” Not a one. There’s no, “Call (insert generic name) over at (whatever place) and they’ll answer any questions you have.” No one is there waiting around to see if you have questions. And trust me when I say, you’ll have hundreds. And that’s normal! Never be afraid to ask. Knowledge is power.

3. I wish there was no such thing as needing the “label” before any kind of assistance is “awarded” (often times it is even DENIED). *Sigh*  Facts are facts. Help is help. And while there are so many, many things I wish I could change about the system itself, the main changes are ones I wish I could simply make in others. But not my boy.

4. I wish all persons were taught how to love like my Beckett. With no plan, no predisposition, no conditions. Just pure love.

5. I wish no one saw disabilities or differences first (or at all) and would simply see a person for how they treat others. For how they present themselves to the world through emotion. Just like my littlest love. Whether you can communicate with words, or use your body to speak, kindness is the easiest thing in the world to give and costs nothing.

6. I wish we could all let loose. Be silly, and giggly, and adventurous, long after childhood comes to a close. Just like my Beckett will.

7. And I wish everyone could find the joy in even the little things, like watching the dancing rain through the sunshine. Just like our boy.
