Carrying a kid around for nine months or so is no joke. Doing it in New York City, in these strange times? Oof. Luckily, there are tons of great prenatal massage places in NYC where an expectant mom can find stress relief and help for those gestational aches and pains. And yes, Covid safety procedures are in effect to keep everyone healthy—and relaxed! Below, our picks for the city’s best places to get a prenatal massage.

The ‘In-the-know’ Massage Therapist: Prenatal Massage Center of Manhattan

For over 16 years Anne Heckheimer has been offering support in the form of massage to NYC’s pregnant women. She incorporates unique add-ons such as gua-sha relaxation (repeated strokes using a smooth stone) and facial rejuvenation into prenatal massages upon request. (Heckheimer is also a certified personal trainer!) All safety rules are being followed: there’s a new medical-grade air purifier on-site, there’s a new intake form for clients with specific COVID-related questions, and clients will be required to bring their own water bottles to reduce the number of surfaces to be touched by everyone. Don’t forget your mask! New modalities: Spinning Babies® Body Balancing, Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® and Labor Enhancement Massage Sessions.

Best for An Afternoon of Pampering: Melt massage

Says owner, Alexis: “While getting an indoor massage at this time cannot be risk-free, we're doing everything we can to make it as safe as possible.” This includes limiting the number of people in their space - the desk is almost entirely working remotely - and all sessions are staggered by at least 15 minutes. “Both clients and LMTs are wearing masks the entire time in our space.” The small team is constantly cleaning the air with HEPA filters and dual direction fans and surfaces are disinfected thoroughly between each client. Adds Alexis: “Finally, we are making an effort to communicate with clients both before and after their sessions over email or on the phone since talking (even while wearing a mask) makes the situation risky.”

BodyMechanics always operated as a medical practice and had 30 min between appointments so when the pandemic hit they were actually fully stocked with gloves, sanitizer and masks. Says the team: “All of our in room furniture is fully wipeable (always was); now you will find hand sanitizer in each room for patient use and our cleaning practices include things, like light switches and sterilizing your chair!” Expectant moms can completely relax because everything is cleaned for their visit. They  also added table top hepa air filters to each room to help with air circulation.  Additional upgrades include the fact that we ported all of our old paper files into an online HIPPA-compliant system so you can now fill out all of your medical records via your smart phone, as well as check out without passing staffers your card. 28 Things You Have to Do in NYC Before Baby Turns One

The Best Facebook Groups for NYC Parents

Julia Randall

A licensed therapist by day, Momma to one (soon to be two) boys, and lifestyle blogger at theblissfulmomma.com.

“Self-care” As Mothers, we hear this phrase a lot, oftentimes with a joke about drinking excessive amounts of wine, or actually being able to enjoy a warm cup of coffee; both are examples of coping, but not really self-care. Self-care goes beyond just how we cope; it is a multi-faceted way of taking care of our many needs as mothers, women, and as human beings. I think it is helpful to look at self-care across several different arenas..

I encourage you to brainstorm what each of these categories means to you. I’ve jotted down my understanding of these categories to help get you started:

Physical: Taking care of your body by seeing medical providers regularly, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, fueling your body with a variety of nourishing foods (yes, that also means enjoying foods like pizza and chocolate in moderation).

Spiritual: Meditating, participating in a religious organization, volunteering, practicing gratitude, and journaling are all great ways to take care of your spiritual self.

Emotional: Making time to have without the kids (and sometimes your partner), saying “no” to what does not serve you, setting boundaries, and addressing stress as it pops up in your life.

Financial: A less well-known category of self-care, but an extremely important one. If you don’t have enough money to pay your bills – or if you spend recklessly – you will end up having a lot of stress. Financial self-care can be having a budget, paying bills on time, saving money, and overall having a good idea of your finances.

Environmental: Our immediate physical surroundings can have a big impact on how we feel. This involves having a system to keep some sense of order in your home, cleaning, and asking for help when you need it.

Psychological: Your mental health is impacted by all of these areas, but also needs to be treated as a separate entity. Social supports such as friends, Mom groups, empathic family members, and therapists are all examples of taking care of yourself psychologically.

What self-care is not: overspending, drinking alcohol/using substances, over-exercising, restricting/binging on food, not speaking up about stressors, not asking for help.

My biggest recommendation for self-care is recognizing that it is an ongoing journey, it is unique to each individual, and it is important to be flexible as you change over time. I’ve linked my favorite self-care items that span across all of these categories.

It’s safe to say that Mother’s Day 2020 is going to be a unique one. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of ways to enjoy the day! In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity to take things into your own hands. For those craving some self-care time, we’ve rounded up the best ways to create an at-home spa day that’s nearly as nice as the real thing. From zen playlists to DIY face masks and even a nail salon, we’ve got the rundown on how to create the relaxing spa day you deserve. Read on and get ready to treat yourself.

Set the Mood

Karolina Grabowska via Pixabay

Our home isn’t exactly what we would consider the height of relaxation these days, so it might take a little creativity to get in the spa mindset. Turn on a chilled-out Spotify playlist to get started—try the aptly named Spa Treatment or the particularly calming Peaceful Piano.

Scrub a Dub Dub

Florencia Potter on Unsplash

If your skin’s feeling a little rough, give yourself a treat with a head-to-toe exfoliation session. You can use a store-bought body scrub or mix up your own, like this three-ingredient coffee scrub or this gentle cleansing scrub.

Nailed It!

Annie Spratt on Unsplash

As flip flop season approaches, it’s the perfect time for an at-home pedicure. Start with a foot soak: this blogger swears by a combination of mouthwash and vinegar to slough off dead skin. Layer on lotion, and pick out your favorite nail polish color to top it all off.

Don’t Forget Refreshments

Julia Zolotova on Unsplash

A spa day wouldn’t be complete without fancy refreshments. Our favorite? Fill a pitcher up with lots of ice and water and add whatever fruit you have on hand. If you’ve got fresh herbs like rosemary or mint around, those are a great addition too. Or go for a cup of herbal or green tea if you’re craving something warm.

Let’s Face (Mask) It

bridgesward from Pixabay

Now’s the time to pull out that face mask from the back of your bathroom cabinet that you’ve been meaning to use. For oily or acne-prone skin, a clay mask works wonders, while a moisturizing sheet mask is great for dry skin. Or you can go the DIY route—make your own masks with common kitchen staples like yogurt, avocado and honey.

Bubble Bath Time

Maddi Bazzocco on Unsplash

A spa day doesn’t have to be elaborate to be satisfying—you can keep it simple with a little quiet time and a bubble bath. Bonus points if you have a bath bomb or candles to set the mood! Chill out with a book or tv show in the bath once the kids are asleep.

Mini Massage

Anastasiia Ostapovych on Unsplash

With all the hand washing we’re doing, it’s not a surprise to be dealing with dry skin. Grab your favorite hand cream and take extra time to give yourself a mini hand massage (or get an assist from your kids or partner). It’s an easy way to relax for just a few minutes.

Bring the Salon Home

Portuguese Gravity on Unsplash

Dying to get your nails done? Turn your bathroom into a salon for the afternoon. If you’re in the market for nail polish, check out SOPHi, a brand offering non-toxic, virtually odorless shades. They also have Piggy Paint, an equally healthy version with colors little ones will love, so kids can get in on the fun too. One clever mom on Facebook turned a cardboard box into a kid-sized salon—genius!

Try Something New

Jhon Vivas on Unsplash

Switch up your routine by trying out a new beauty tool. Jade rollers and gua sha stones for facial massage are all the rage right now—skincare lovers swear by this simple ritual that can help boost circulation and brighten the face. Pick one up from Amazon or Skin Gym and check out a how-to guide to learn the basics.

Island Time is Family Time: The Best of The Abacos

Things to Do with Kids in La Paz, Mexico

Beach Vacations for Families

We’ve all had days when we don’t feel like our best self. But on those great parenting days, what’s in place for you when things are going well? For me, it’s a connection, movement, creativity, and nature that keeps me grounded, productive, and happy. If you need to reset, here are six things to do that just may make the difference between an okay day and a great one.

1. Connect authentically with your kids, early in the day. Kids have such a natural joy for life that is so infectious. Spending as little as five minutes before the morning rush will allow that joy to rub off on you and be a touch-point for the rest of your day. Plus, kids need that connection. Experiencing it early in the day will help improve their day too (which is, frankly, better for everyone!) So stay in bed and read them a couple of books or get down on the floor and play. Even for just a few minutes helps.

2. Get moving early in the day. Whether it is a run, a bit of yoga, or just walking the dog, I start my day feeling better when I move my body early. I listen to my head and body to see what intensity of movement I need. Anxious or stressed? A run or something that gets my blood flowing is the best way to work through that stress. Tired or sore? A walk or some yoga will gently invigorate me.

3. Make something every day. I’ve made creativity central to my day job, but all too often we feel that if we aren’t good enough at something to make it our life’s focus then it isn’t worth pursuing. I disagree wholeheartedly: hobbies are important! They give our brains space to operate differently. And in a world with long-term projects, seeing something finished and accomplished has tremendous value. One year, I took an online gouache pattern design course, and it was one of the most joyful uses of time. I looked forward to it every day. While my art will likely never be in a gallery, it makes me happy and that happiness radiates out in my life.

4. Go outside. As a dog owner, I have an excuse to go out into nature frequently. Watching the seasons change, getting to see and know my neighbors, and just being present in the world brings me so much joy. But it is easy to do this and just roll through it, checking one thing quickly off a mile-long to-do list. I try to slow it down and take advantage of this time to see the small things that fill me with wonder and joy. If I’m having trouble doing that on my own, I listen to a meditation that I can do while I walk to foster that connection.

5. Lay hands. One of my dearest friends used to be a massage therapist. I remember her once telling me about the immense responsibility of that role. She said, “You don’t know if that person has experienced touch that day. And it is so rare to experience touch without intention.” This acknowledgment of the power of touch stayed with me. It is so important to give and receive touch frequently, daily if possible (I’m talking about non-sexual, consensual touch). Take time to give someone a solid hug, long enough that you can take a deep breath or two. It will help you feel so good!

6. Breathe. When was the last time you took a deep breath? Yes, meditation is all the rage, but for all of the health and well-being crazes you may read about, this one really is backed by science (as well as thousands of years of experience by millions of people). Meditation can lower stress levels when you are in a difficult situation, and even when things are going great it can help build resilience for difficult times. So even if long meditation sessions aren’t your thing (yet), finding a time to really breathe and pay attention to your body and surroundings will have a profound effect. If you are new to meditation, I highly recommend apps like Headspace that offer both guided meditations and education on how to meditate (even people with busy minds that they “can’t shut down” can do it!)

What helps you reset to be your best self and the best parent you can be? Once you know, you can then help your kids reset to be their best selves.

This post originally appeared on Authority Mag.

Marianna Sachse is the founder of Jackalo—a line of long-lasting and organic children’s clothes that accepts all of the used clothes back to be repaired and resold or responsibly recycled, reducing the environmental impact our kids' clothes have. She is a mother of two active kids and a maker.

It has been four years now since my daughter was diagnosed with autism. Over those years, I have conquered so many issues including lack of sleep, hyperactivity, and anger among others.

About three years ago, she started wandering off the home compound. I would panic every time I missed her in the house for more than a few minutes. When I take her to an amusement park, I always have to keep a keen eye on her.

I started researching the issue and realized that wandering affects many children with ASD (Austism Spectrum Disorder). I have tried different things and some of them have worked wonderfully for my daughter.

Learn to Identify Triggers

Many triggers made my daughter wander off. If there were nothing of interest in the house or the amusement park, she would wander off until she found something that interested her. She would also walk away from a stressful situation, frightening places, or places with bright lights, loud noises and a lot of commotion.

I now observe her keenly to see when she is stressed or not interested, and ensure she is comfortable. This way, she doesn’t wander off.

Secure the Home

My daughter is seven years but I still have to keep her safe by locking the gate and ensuring there are no openings on our live fence. Even when I feel that she is happy and interested inside the house, I still keep the gate under lock and key. I have an alarm on doors in my house to notify me when my daughter moves in or out of the room.

Use Monitoring and Tracking Devices

I have to be vigilant at all times. My husband feels like I am too much. However, monitoring and tracking devices have helped me more than once locate my daughter in a crowd. My daughter, just like other children with ASD, is not able to communicate her name and address. I use a medical alert device called Mobilehelp and tracking devices to ensure I know where she is at all times.

Tracking devices are simple and she can wear them everywhere. I feel settled knowing whenever my daughter wanders off; I can always track her. I get updates on my phone wherever she goes.

Teach Communication and Behavior Strategies

Though it takes time, my daughter learns with repeated action. Over the years, I have created a routine for her to follow. She loves sameness, just like any other child with ASD, and that has helped me teach her how to calm herself when she feels stressed. There is a teddy bear that she carries everywhere. When she feels stressed, she always takes her teddy bear to play with it.

While she would respond to ‘no’ with tantrums, today she can calm herself when she is told ‘no’. It has not been easy teaching her that she cannot get everything she needs, especially when we are shopping in a store. Because I cannot teach her alone, I liaise with teachers, my husband, and family friends.

Make Sure She Sleeps Enough

Sleeping was an issue when my daughter was first diagnosed with autism. I had noticed patterns of sleeplessness and hyperactivity during the night and I resolved to find a solution for the sleep problem. I established a sleeping routine that involves her getting ready for bed an hour before bedtime. She engages in calming activities such as listening to a story I read her, light massage, or just cuddling her teddy bear. She is accustomed to that routine and she sleeps better.

By sleeping enough during the night, she is less hyperactive during the day and this helps keep her safe from wandering.

Her room is always ready for her—less noise, less light, fewer distractions, and a more comfortable bed with weighted blankets.

I vowed to understand my daughter. It is the best way to keep her safe. Instead of reacting to every situation with a lecture, I learned to anticipate specific behavior for specific situations. Today, I can tell, with near certainty, when she will wander off.

Summer is just around the corner, which means time for family vacations for many. It is a time to recharge for most but for nursing mothers, the thought of traveling with the little ones can feel less than relaxing. Here are a few of our tips to help ease your mind and get you breezing through your next vacay.

Airplane Mode

Before heading out to catch a flight, it’s a good idea to set aside some extra time to nurse and bond with your baby. You’ll want to keep your routine consistent when traveling.

All parents dread a fussy baby on a flight, but here’s where breastfeeding moms have an advantage. The physical contact that nursing your baby provides can help address his or her physical and emotional needs. During takeoff and landing are great times to breastfeed as it can help calm your baby and minimize ear pain.

Call Ahead

Take a quick look at your itinerary and begin identifying opportunities for breastfeeding breaks throughout your day. At Imalac, we are huge advocates of a woman’s right to breastfeed wherever she is most comfortable. However, if you prefer privacy, call the places that you’ll be visiting in advance to ask about the facility’s private areas that would be most suitable for nursing.

If you are currently pumping, it may also be more convenient to travel with a manual or battery-operated breast pump that can easily fit in your personal or carry-on bag. Double check that you have all the required pumping parts, cords, adapters, and an extra battery pack.

‘Me Time’

Don’t be afraid to take some time for yourself before breastfeeding duties actually begin. Visit the hotel gym, book a massage at the resort spa, or explore the local area to make the most out of your time off.

Also, remember to drink plenty of water and get enough rest while away as all of these factors can affect your milk supply. When a new mother takes time to nurture her mental, emotional and physical health, the result is increased benefits such as improved overall mood, reduction in stress and anxiety, and a huge confidence boost on breastfeeding.

Getting ready to travel with a new baby and family seems like a daunting task but setting aside additional time to focus on you and your baby’s needs is how you can ensure a smooth sailing vacation!

For a storied vacation full of history, charm and more pools you can shake a stick at, La Quinta Resort & Club is a must-visit for your next Palm Springs getaway. Set against the rugged Santa Rosa Mountains on 45-acres of lush landscape, we have the intel on all there is to do and eat at this desert spot just 120 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

Resort Overview

Andie Huber

Located in La Quinta (the town was named after the resort), La Quinta Resort & Club, was originally built and designed as desert hideaway in 1926 and offered Hollywood celebrities more privacy than adjacent Palm Springs.

And as you turn down the long driveway, you'll immediately see why. It feels as though you are transported to another era thanks to the blooming flowerbeds, layered against the Spanish Colonial Revival buildings and the looming mountains.

The lobby, thanks to a recent renovation, highlights the architecturally stunning dark wood beams and Mexican-tiled floors, lending a historical gravitas to this fun-filled vacation spot. And while the resort is vast, each area feels intimate and private—like your very own desert oasis.

Good to Know: The resort is pet-friendly too! No need to leave four-legged family members back in LA if you don't want.

Pool Time

La Quinta Resort & Club

The resort has 41 temperature-controlled pools on the property—yes, you read that right! There are 41 pools! Included in that number is a large, main pool that has lunch and drink service.

There is a dedicated pool in each courtyard, surrounded by a set of accommodations that is perfect for last-minute dips, evening swims, or if you don't feel like walking more than twenty feet to get your family swim game going.

On-Site Activities

Andie Huber

In addition to swimming, there are 23 tennis courts, six golf courses, and a fitness center for everyone in the family to work up a sweat. Or just go for a walk or jog on the spectacular grounds. If you do go for a walk, keep an eye out for plaques on the property that detail famous guests, like Frank Capra, who spent the winters at La Quinta and wrote the script for "It's a Wonderful Life" at the resort.

Make sure to swing by the spa and make an appointment for a mommy-to-be-massage ($170 for 50-minutes) or one of their signature massages like the Sacred Stone Massage ($235 for 80-minutes) that uses warm basalt stone combined with a Swedish massage.

Insider Tip: Plan to spend some extra time before and after your massage at the spa. The waiting rooms are so relaxing you might find yourself taking a nap before the massage even starts. There are also some gorgeous outdoor spots to hang, post-massage. And even better? You can order lunch, drinks, and snacks here too.

The Rooms

Andie Huber

The resort is made up of casitas, suites and villas which gives families flexibility for their stay—crucial if you plan to spend more than a couple days out in the desert. The suites are generously-sized and can easily accommodate a family of four. The sofa pulls out into a bed and is roomy enough for two kids to sleep there while you and your partner can claim the bed to yourselves.

All the rooms come with a fireplace in the room, but if you can, request a room with a patio that has an outdoor fireplace. That way you can hang outside while the kids sleep inside, and enjoy those desert, star-filled nights by a cozy fire.

Where to Eat

Andie Huber

There are lots of dining options, in addition to room service, at the resort.

For breakfast or a casual American-bistro style dinner, Twenty6 has plenty to offer everyone in the family. Both offer extensive kid's menus and are amenable to special requests for picky eaters. At breakfast you can choose buffet or you can order off the menu.

The main pool has a bar and lunch menu—perfect for eating poolside and keeping the kids properly fueled.

For dinner, make a reservation at Adobe Grill for the freshest, Mexican food that gives LA dining hot-spots a run for their money. And definitely splurge on the dulce de leche for dessert. We promise, you won't regret it.

Entertainment

Andie Huber

There is usually live music on the weekends and it's definitely a must-attend. The atmosphere is relaxing and festive and gives everyone an extra reason to lounge and linger on the lawn after dinner. It's exactly the type of event you want on a vacation—picture kids having fun, running around while the parents can relax and enjoy themselves. It truly was the cherry on top for this family-friendly getaway.

In the past, the resort has transformed itself into Bedford Falls in honor of the Frank Capra's famous script, "It's a Wonderful Life." Add to that fireside movies, cooking classes and more, the resort offers loads of entertainment options throughout the year. Make sure to check out their calendar when planning your next getaway.

Insider Tip: Loads of kids had scooters with them and zoomed their way around the various pathways on the resort. If you have room in the car, definitely pack yours.

Nearby Attractions

Andie Huber

If you haven't been to this side of town before, there are a ton of family-friendly activities close-by (and some that are even closer to La Quinta than Palm Springs).

First thing in the morning, head to The Living Desert (just 15 minutes away), or go visit the old town of La Quinta (2 minutes away), that is, if you can convince the kids to leave the pools. For more fun things to do with the kids, check out our comprehensive list of what to do in Palm Springs.

Insider Tip: On the property, is one of the best gift shops that we've ever seen. Between the clever books and cactus-inspired collectibles, make sure to stop here for unique, one-of-a-kind gifts and souvenirs. And don't forget to stop at Lollipops for their sweet treats.

Room rates start at $159 per night.
