During pregnancy, expectant mothers go above and beyond to ensure the health and safety of their unborn children. Everything comes under diligent scrutiny, from what they eat to what skincare products they use and everything in between. If you’re expecting, this probably sounds very familiar to you! What is unfamiliar to pregnant women everywhere, however—regardless of whether this is their first pregnancy—is the “X factor” of the coronavirus pandemic.

How can you protect yourself and your pregnancy during the COVID-19 outbreak? Here are some essential things to add to your pregnancy-care regimen and protect your pregnancy with these 5 tips.

1. Get a pulse oximeter: Hypoxemia (a below-normal level of oxygen in your blood) is one of the signs of serious illness with COVID-19. You can pick up a pulse oximeter for around $50 and take regular readings of your pulse and oxygen saturation. Get a baseline so that you know if something looks off. A baseline for healthy people is 90 or higher. When we see below 90, we start getting concerned.

2. Check for fever: Whether you have a fancy new thermometer that reads from the forehead or an old-school glass one where the mercury rises, take your temperature regularly to make sure you aren’t experiencing a fever.

3. Keep surfaces tidy for easy cleaning: Keeping tidy may not seem like a health tip for pregnancy, but in the days of COVID-19 it absolutely is. You want the surfaces in your home to be able to easily be wiped down and disinfected frequently—at least once a day.

4. If you choose to travel, choose safely: For example, you might choose to visit a loved one in a remote rural town with few to no COVID-19 cases, but don’t travel somewhere that you’ll be interacting with a lot of people.

5. Keep your distance: How close is too close? Can you smell the other person’s detergent, deodorant, or shampoo? That’s too close! And for some extra protection when you are going to be around other people, wear a mask. It’s an additional safety measure that can only help you and your baby.

Along with the healthy eating and label reading you’re already doing, adding these tips as “must-dos” to your pregnancy care will help you protect the health and safety of your unborn child. Plus, it will also help you to breathe easier and relax into your pregnancy as much as you can. Knowing you’re creating the safest, happiest, and healthiest environment for yourself and your baby will provide some comfort and peace of mind during this uncertain time in history.

Where does your child’s dietary protein come from? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 90 percent comes from non-fish sources. If you’ve heard mixed reviews on childhood fish consumption, a new report from the AAP may shed light on seafood selection.

While seafood doesn’t necessarily have to fit into the staple category of your kiddo’s food picks, it has plenty of benefits for your child as they grow. Along with providing a lean source of protein (as long as you don’t deep fry it or opt for the stick version), fish may help to increase cognitive function and prevent the risk of developing allergies in childhood.

photo: Terje Sollie via Pexels

Even though the bountiful benefits, and the Omega-3 fatty acids it contains, are widely accepted, some parents still worry about the safety of eating seafood. The AAP report cites fear of methylmercury pollution as the top reason for avoiding fish.

Should you let mercury-related anxiety stop you from feeding your fam fish? No, and yes. Take caution when choosing fish for your child and yourself—especially if you’re pregnant. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration maintains a list of the good, the best and the bad when it comes to fish safety. In general, the fish with the highest mercury levels include king mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, tilefish, swordfish and bigeye tuna.

If you have questions or concerns about feeding your child fish, ask your pediatrician.

Fruit juice might seem like a healthy option, but it’s faced criticism as a “healthy” option for the amount of sugar it contains. Now a new report from Consumer Reports has found “concerning levels” of heavy metals in kids’ juice.

Consumer Reports recently tested 45 popular juice brands sold across the country and found elevated—and potentially harmful—levels of arsenic, cadmium and lead in nearly half of the brands tested, including juices branded specifically for kids. Every product tested had measurable levels of at least one of the heavy metals including cadmium, inorganic arsenic, lead and mercury.

photo: stevepb via Pixabay

Twenty-one of the 45 juices had concerning levels of cadmium, inorganic arsenic, and/or lead. Of those 21, seven could harm kids who drink 4 ounces (half a cup) or more per day; another nine brands pose risks to kids who drink 8 ounces (one cup) or more per day. Five of those products were packaged in juice boxes or pouches.

The report also found that grape juice and juice blends had the highest average heavy metal levels and that organic juices did not have any lower levels of metals than conventional ones.

“Exposure to these metals early on can affect their whole life trajectory,” says Jennifer Lowry, M.D., chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Council on Environmental Health. “There is so much development happening in their first years of life.”

So what can parents do to keep kids safe? The best way to minimize exposure to heavy metals in fruit juice is to lower the consumption of fruit juice. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) already recommends limiting juice intake because of the sugar levels that can contribute to risk of developing cavities and obesity. The AAP recommendation is no juice before age one and limited levels for kids one and up. Ultimately, it is up to parents to research the products they buy and decide what is best for their families.

You can see the full Consumer Reports chart on the juices tested here.

You read every label at the grocery store, but do you know what’s in your breast milk? We’ve all heard breast milk is liquid gold, but to find out about milk qualityhow much of key vitamins and nutrients your baby is getting through your milktakes a test kit from Lactation Lab.

When you send in a sample of your breast milk, you’ll receive a detailed analysis of its nutritional content and any environmental toxins, as well as dietary recommendations. The test focuses on nutrients that are important for infant development and whose levels can be modified by changes to your diet.

Your results are delivered via email in a PDF format, so you can easily print them to discuss with your doctor. We recommend reviewing results with your healthcare providers before making changes to your diet, vitamins or supplements.
