(That feeling when you order the most adorable—and expensive—dress from a boutique catalog and your daughter refuses to wear it? Not great.) Happily, here in the Bay Area, we live in a veritable smorgasbord of fabulous kids’ consignment stores. No matter where you live, you can find a local shop packed with used baby and children’s clothes, gear, and toys, for a fraction of the brand-new value. And better yet? Get an even better deal by bringing in your own gently-used items to consign for cash or store credit.

Monkei Miles
San Francisco has a dearth of kids’ consignment shops, so budget-conscious locals all cheered when this hip and friendly new boutique, decorated with vintage toys, opened last summer. The owner, a former buyer for fan favorite Chloe’s Closet, has an eye for sourcing cute, cool, high-end used kids’ clothes (sizes newborn to 12), which she sells back at incredible prices. You can also find unique toys, mobiles, locally-made art and children’s jewelry. Keep kids busy in the reading nook, complete with comfy bean bag.

Insider tip: The owner buys used clothes on the spot for cash or credit (no consignment, no waiting!). Call for an appointment.

Chloe’s Closet
This San Francisco consignment favorite has three locations. The Bernal Heights store has long been a go-to for city moms and is on pretty much every “Best Kids’ Clothing Store” list in the city. From toys to costumes to maternity clothes, parents will find everything they’re looking for and will likely go home with much more. The Bernal location sells clothes for kids (from newborn to size 12) and moms, while the Inner Sunset location sells only kids’ items (newborn to size 10). The Berkeley location features kids’ sizes newborn to 12 as well as women’s maternity. (Note that you can consign women’s maternity and non-maternity clothes at all three locations, whether or not they can be sold there.) Be sure to check out the detailed “How to Consign” section on the website before you go. No appointment is necessary, and they buy anytime they’re open.

Nestled in the heart of the Outer Sunset, Hunter’s Threads offers a plethora of second hand scores for your children, AND doubles as a resource for families seeking therapy for developmentally delayed kids. Unique to the consignment world is Hunter’s Threads approach to ascertaining their inventory. Unlike other shops where you are compensated for your hand me downs, HT accepts clothing on a donation basis. This means, you can clear out your clothing without worrying about the re-sale value or the label. The result? An easy KonMari session—clean, clear and donate. Your closet is left with the appropriately sized delicious duds for your wee one. It also means that HT can resell clothing at a lower cost (think Goodwill pricing vs. Chloe’s Closet) as they do not have a consignment fee. Don’t want to spend a fortune on maternity clothes? This well-stocked store in a shopping mall (plenty of parking!) in Walnut Creek has one of the largest selection of used pregnancy gear around, ranging from posh working outfits to nursing bras. They also feature all styles and brands of kids’ clothes up to size 16. It’s easy to keep kids entertained here with the toys they’re welcome to play on and try out, and a TV to distract if all else fails.

Insider tip: Don’t forget to browse the clearance rack, with last-chance buys as low as $1.

Located in an unassuming strip mall in Concord, tiny, pleasantly-packed Growing Pains is a treasure trove of gently used clothes and toys for the very young. You may not find as many items for older kids and teens, but babies and toddlers are extremely well represented. One of the biggest selling points is that unlike many chic consignment shops, this one is happy to buy and sell lower-end brand like Carters and Target, to mix in with the pricier items. Super friendly service makes selling and shopping here a pleasure.

Berri Kids Boutique
While their brick and mortar boutique in Pleasanton has closed, you can shop an even wider selection (and consign by mail) at their sleek website. They have a fantastic inventory of new and like-new children’s clothing, books, toys and gear at 40-60% off retail prices. They buy clothing outright, and accept baby gear on consignment. Clothing items range from 12 months to 10 years. Note that they do not accept clothing brands from big box stores including Circo and Cherokee from Target and Arizona from JC Penny. They also won’t take cribs, mattresses, stuffed animals or car seats. Favorite brands recently found here are Baby Gap, Crewcuts, Tea and Janie and Jack. Grove Street Kids has been a popular spot for moms with growing kids for over a decade. Owner Anne Marie Elliott is a mom who loves giving back to the community while combining her passions for eco-responsibility and fashion. No appointment is necessary to sell (although consignment ends at 4 p.m.), and you’ll get 40 percent of the selling price for items priced higher than $50, and 30 percent for items priced lower.

This is the North Bay’s largest maternity and consignment sales event. It happens just twice a year and the next sale is September 14–17 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Each sale has over 500 families consigning and boasts over 100,00 items including clothes, toys, books, games and gear. This amazing three-day extravaganza of buying and selling happens each spring and fall; the next event takes place October 20-22. Maternity Clothes: What you ACTUALLY need

When I became pregnant with my first child, a friend told me that I really didn’t need to buy any maternity clothes. My reactions ranged from “oh good, I can save money” to “but how am I going to fit a growing belly under half of what I own?” As my pregnancy progressed and my body continued to change, I realized that there was a lot of truth to what she had said.  While every pregnancy is different, and how a woman’s body responds to it varies greatly, but generally, there are only a few essential items that one actually needs during the 9 (well, really 10) months.  Especially if you’re on a budget, you’re a minimalist, or you just don’t see the rationale for buying something you’ll only wear for a few months, here is what you need:

MUST BUYS:

2-3 Maternity Bras: Your boobs are going to get big.  For some women, they may just go up a cup size (or two).  Others may go up multiple cup sizes, plus their rib cage may expand as well.  Buying maternity bras are a great investment because they are (1) designed to fit an expanding bustline, which happens during most of pregnancy and (2) you can use them postpartum, especially if you choose to breastfeed.  I personally bought 3, right off Amazon: a white and black one, and a “night” nursing bra that offered support but also was comfortable enough to wear at night.  The best time to buy a bra is mid-pregnancy, when you’re about 5 or even 6 months along (or basically when you can’t fit into your regular bras anymore).  Cost: $40 per bra.

2 Belly Bands: These basically look like spandex tube tops, which you can wear over your hips/your waist put still hold up your pants.  In theory, you can still wear your regular pants/shorts/skirts, and when you can’t zip or button them anymore (or at all), the belly bands hold them in place and cover up the fact your zipper is, well, unzipped.  You can also wear them postpartum, and because they are spandex…it helps smooth a few things out…like Spanx!  I bought a black and a white version. Cost: $20 per band.

2-3 Cotton Tank Tops or Shirts: You may already have a couple neutral-colored tank tops or shirts in your wardrobe that you can use, but if not, having a couple ones that act as your “base layer” is key.  If it’s winter, you can wear a sweater over it for a layered look; if it’s spring or summer, just accessorize with a colorful scarf or jewelry.  You can buy these shirts at H&M, Target, Old Navy, Gap. Cost: $10 per shirt.

1 Maxi Skirt or Dress: If you already this in your wardrobe, use it.  If not, you can easily get one off Amazon, or at H&M.  The material should be stretchy enough, and getting a neutral solid color is best, as you can layer it with a blazer, a sweater, or accessorize with jewelry, a scarf, or a belt (put it right under your boobs).  This can also be worn in all seasons, and remember, you can always wear it post-partum as well.  Cost: $40.

OPTIONAL:

Maternity Tights:  If you tend to wear a lot of skirts or dresses, and your second half of your pregnancy will be in the fall/winter, buying 1-2 pairs of maternity tights is key. You can only go for so long trying to either pull up your tights above your growing bump, or wearing them around your hips.  It’s uncomfortable and awkward.  Maternity tights have a big panel at the waistline that is expandable, so you can easily fit them above your belly.  Get them off Amazon.  Cost: $20.

A Maternity Swimsuit: If you want to swim during your pregnancy (which I highly recommend, especially in the last few months!), having a swimsuit that you feel comfortable in is key.  Of course, there are some women that feel totally comfortable in bikinis, with their belly on display, but others prefer a more modest approach.  I purchased mine at a maternity store, but there are a lot of options at Motherhood Maternity, Amazon, or even Target.  I found that the “tankini” st‌yle was the best option for me, as the top portion had a larger panel that I could adjust to fit over my belly as I grew bigger, which also made it easier to get it on and off.  Cost: $50.

If cost isn’t a factor, then you can certainly add to this list.  There are tons of stylish maternity clothes out there (which you can get from maternity or non-maternity stores), but a lot of them you really don’t need, or perhaps you’ll only wear the for a month or two.  In most cases when buying any items, buy your pre-pregnancy size.  Regardless, before you start to go shopping, make sure to assess your wardrobe, and see what you could wear for a portion of the pregnancy and what is not possible (your pencil skirt? No. Blazers, sweaters, high-waisted dresses, stretchy shirts, yes.).  I recommend you remove all items that are in the “no” category immediately and put it to the back of the closet.  Your body changes rapidly and being reminded of something that you can’t possibly wear during those months will just make you overwhelmed. Remember to assess your wardrobe at multiple points during your pregnancy.  Your belly will probably get bigger than you think it will be if you just do this when you’re only 4 months along!

Finally, don’t forget to assess your wardrobe at the end of your pregnancy.  Your body won’t suddenly morph into the body it was when you arrive back home immediately after delivery, so you should have a few options for this “interim period.”  For some, it may only last a few weeks; others, it will last months.  The last thing you need when you are in the early days of postpartum is to agonize over “not having anything to wear” or to wear what you wore when you were 9 months pregnant.  You’ll probably still look a little pregnant, so having loose, comfortable clothes is key. Your body takes time to get back to the way it was, so another reason for recycling your “non-pregnant clothes” or having just a few basics in your wardrobe that may not technically be maternity wear.  It will definitely help your postpartum moral!

As They Grow

Time flies. All of a sudden, the baby’s feet don’t fit in her jammies, your three-year-old needs a haircut, even “your girls” could really use a new nursing bra. You could run all over town looking for everything you need, or, you could just head over to CF Kids in Crossroads Mall; a one-stop shop for clothing, gear, toys, and yes…even hair-cuts.

New mamas will love the selection of nursing supplies (including Bravado bras), slings, feeding supplies, diaper bags, little potties, and even car seats. Clothing typically runs from infant to 6x, although we saw a few items in 7/8 including cute rain gear from Pluie Pluie. We also found a great selection of Zutano, Petit Bateau, e and fabulous Luxe baby robes by Lil Rags. CF Kids also has plenty of Robeez, Trumpettes, Crocs.

The toy section encompasses all ages with a huge supply of Corolle dolls, RokenBok systems, eco-friendly Plan Toys, and for older kids, games, workbooks, science and art kits.

The CF Kids Hair Salon is attached to the store. Junior can pick out his seat (like a race-car or fire truck), a toy to play with, and even the flavor of shampoo.
