Cave Man Statue

Jeanne. Z via Yelp

Find It:1995 NW Vine St., Grant’s Pass, Oregon

Since 1971, a 17-ft. caveman statue has been guarding the entrance to Grant’s Pass. The Neanderthal was constructed by International Fiberglass to celebrate both the Oregon Caves National Monument and a unique local men's group called the Oregon Cavemen. Members of this club, which officially formed in 1922, would ceremoniously march down Main Street sporting wigs, fake teeth, animal furs, and spiked clubs--all in the name of promoting the nearby caverns. While this wild procession is long gone, kids can still get a kick out of the giant statue and its lingering influence. (The local high school football team? The Cavemen, of course.)

Prehistoric Gardens

Jennifer P.

Find It: 36848 Highway 101, Port Orford, Oregon

Prehistoric Gardens opened in 1955 and was created by E.V. “Ernie” Nelson, an artist, sculptor, entrepreneur, and dinosaur fan. He put in three years of research (including a trip to NYC’s Smithsonian) before making each of the 23 life-size creatures—including the 86 feet long and 46 feet tall Brachiosaurs. The park is located in the middle of the Oregon rainforest and while it may not have the flash of the blockbuster Jurassic Park, it does have a nice stroller-accessible path and a lot of dino-charm. Admission varies but tykes 2 & under are free.

Oregon Vortex and House of Mystery

Michelangelo S.

Find It: 4303 Sardine Creek Rd., Gold Hill, Oregon

Open from March-October, the Oregon Vortex is a spherical field of force (half above the ground and half below) that causes a lot of wackiness: balls roll uphill, brooms stand on end, and people appear to shrink. Located on the same property, The House of Mystery was built in 1904, slid off its foundation at an angle in 1911, and has been at a tilt ever since. Thanks to the late John Lister, a geologist, mining engineer and physicist, both sites are open to the public. Skeptics are welcome but prepare for a lot of kid curiosity!

Bobbie the Wonder Dog

Jen K. via Yelp

Find It: 200 S. Water St., Silverton, Oregon

Dogs have always been a favorite family pet. In 1923 when the Braizer family lost Bobbie the family collie during a cross-country summer road trip they were Broken-hearted. The family headed home to Silverton, OR certain they would never see him again. Six months later, on February 15, 1924, a tired and bedraggled Bobbie arrived on their doorstep. He traveled 2,551 miles on foot, across mountains and rivers to return to his clan and instantly became a celebrity. He even received the keys to the city, a jewel studded collar, and a feature in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. His statue, replica dog house and 70-ft. mural can be found in downtown Silverton.

Harvey, the Giant Rabbit

Sam R. via Yelp

FInd It: 21250 SW Tualatin Valley Hwy., Aloha, Oregon

In October of 1962 a storm blew through the Pacific Northwest and toppled and damaged a fiberglass Texaco Big Friend statue in Aloha. The owner brought it to a man named Ed Harvey who was skilled at fiberglass repair. The owner never returned for it and after years of laying abandoned Harvey had an idea. One of his favorite Jimmy Stewart films had a giant invisible rabbit named Harvey in it and rabbits bring good luck, so he decided to put a rabbit head on Big Friend's body and installed it in front of his shop. It's been drawing attention ever since!

Mill Ends Park

Andy Nystrom via flickr

This tiny park was created in 1946 by WWII vet Dick Fagan. The weed-riddled hole in the ground was  initially intended  it to hold a light pole, but when the pole never showed up Fagan, who was a columnist for the Oregon Journal, planted flowers it and named it Mills Ends: the name of his column in the paper. It is located in the median strip of SW Naito Parkway and is two feet wide and takes up 452 square inches. In 1971 the Guiness Book of Records granted it the grand status of "the smallest park in the world." In 1948 Mill Ends Park was dedicated as a park for leprechauns on St. Patrick’s Day. Fagan wrote stories about the events that supposedly took take place at the park until his death in 1969.

Paul Bunyan

marquams.mama.jl via flickr

Find It: Intersection of N. Interstate Ave. and N. Denver Ave., Portland, Oregon

This 31-foot tall man is made of concrete, plaster and steel and evokes squeals of excitement from tiny tots who need to crane their necks to take the whole wonder in. The statue is listed on the national Register of Historic Places and is a fine tribute to the storybook logger, Paul Bunyan. Built by father and sun team Victor R. and Victor A. Nelson in in 1959 for Oregon's Centennial Exposition and International Trade Fair, this creation is almost as infamous to locals as the legend it represents. While some may wonder how the story of Paul Bunyan, which originated in Minnesota, fits into the story of Oregon, locals agree that the monstrous lumberjack was a clear tip-of-the-hat to the timber industry and it's influence in Oregon.

It wasn’t that long ago when we were hanging out with our besties while the kids were digging in the sand at the playground…right? And though it actually feels like ages since we were in the same room as the friends and family we love, there’s a way to keep that close-vibe going through social distancing and beyond: Houseparty.

Houseparty is a split-screen group video chat that turns into a virtual game night! It’s the next best thing to hanging out in person. It’s free, can be installed on your phone or accessed on desktop via their web app and is full of features that literally bring the party to your house.

Not Your Everyday Video Conference

Game play is clear and simple (unlike figuring out how to change your virtual background). Houseparty is fun for all ages, even with a “full house” of 8 people playing at once! You can choose from Trivia; Heads Up!; Quick Draw; and Chips and Guac—not to be confused with the delicious appetizer but equally as fun.

“In da House!” or Fashionably Late?

When you open the app it lets your friends and family know you’ve arrived and are ready to party. There also is a way to “drop in” in a party with your friends without having to send notice – just “long press” the app icon.

You Can Pass Virtual Notes & Send Facemail

Facemail?! Yep, it’s a thing: just record a video message through the app, and send it to any of your Houseparty contacts! You can also “pass a note” (just like in middle school) and privately chat someone in the group.

It’s Safe, Secure & Free

Download the app FREE to your phone or computer. Not only is Houseparty easy to use, it is safe and secure, private. and only connects you with people you know.

Don’t go one more day without throwing a Houseparty in your house! Stay connected to the people you care about most! Learn more at Houseparty.com and download it for free at App Store or on Google Play or the the desktop version here.

What’s better than snuggling with your baby in a cozy carrier? Snuggling with your sweet babe and then restoring the carrier for a new family who needs it!

What Is Everlove?

Parent-trusted brand Ergobaby has recently launched an amazing buyback, restore, and resell program. It’s called Everlove and it’s the first of its kind, offering families the opportunity to either send in their no-longer-needed carrier for a gift card, or buy a pre-loved one at a discount. The result is a win-win for families everywhere, and major points for the environment as the Everlove program is estimated to save up to 96% of energy use, 95% of water use, and 84% of CO2 emissions for each carrier. And it’s no surprise that this kind of innovative thinking is coming from the first and only to company to introduce a lifetime warranty — the ErgoPromise Guarantee.

How Does It Work?

Families can simply send in an Ergobaby carrier and then choose from a $50 gift card to Ergobaby.com, a $20 gift card to a retailer of their choice, or a $30 donation made on their behalf to Baby2Baby. Anyone who purchases one of these premium, pre-owned pieces of baby gear can rest assured that the carrier has passed a 30-point inspection for maximum quality and durability, plus a sustainable and baby-safe deep cleaning process. The result is an Ergobaby that’s as good as new.

What if My Carrier Is Dirty?

Don’t fret if your Ergobaby has been on the receiving end of some serious baby bodily fluids. Carriers in need of a little extra oomph are pre-treated with a citrus-based detergent that leaves behind no residual moisture or scents. They’ll be sure that a new family receives a safe, snug and long-lasting carrier that boosts baby-caregiver bonding.

Mom2Mom

It’s not just the carrier you can pass along. Each family that sells their Ergobaby carrier through Everlove is asked to leave a story, words of encouragement, a small note or a memory for the new owners. The new family just looks up the unique ID number stamped on their Ergobaby to read it.

Pass It On

There’s a lot of reasons to participate in the Everlove program, but we think the best part is knowing that a new family will get lots of love and use out of you and your sweet babe’s carrier. And that Ergobaby can go on a new set of adventures.

Everlove by Ergobaby is building its inventory and getting ready to spread the love. The online shop will launch in late Spring 2020. So get a jumpstart on spring cleaning and send yours in to find a new family!

To learn more about the program, visit ergobaby.com/everlove.

Ergobaby will match the first 100 carriers sent in with a baby carrier donation to Baby2Baby! BABY2BABY provides children living in poverty, ages 0-12 years, with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that every child deserves.

Inclusion matters. A little boy from Arizona named Oliver has the world captivated after a photo of him looking at a Target ad featuring another young boy in a wheelchair went viral. Demi Porter Garza-Pena and her son, who will be 2-years-old next month, were visiting their local Target recently when the ad caught her little boy’s eye and left him in “awe.”

Target Inclusion

“Today Oliver stopped me dead in his tracks and turned back around to see this picture that he spotted!” Garza-Pena wrote on her Facebook page Ollie’s World. “He just stared at it in awe! He recognized another boy like him, smiling and laughing on a display at Target.”

“Oliver sees kids every day, but he never gets to see kids like him,” she wrote. “This was amazing! I am so happy that other kids that pass through here with their parents will see this!” she wrote. “There is a lot of focus on representing diversity, but representing people with disabilities is just as important!”

Oliver, has a rare condition called Caudal Regression Syndrome that impairs the development of the lower half of the body.

The ad for Cat and Jack, a Target brand, which has created an adaptive line of clothing for children, has garnered attention from all over. Garza-Pena’s post has been shared over 31,000 times. The post even managed to reach the mother of the child featured in the advertisement. She commented, “This picture has me in tears! Tell Ollie he can do anything he puts his mind to!”

When it came time to celebrate their daughter Calista’s first birthday, pit master and restaurant owner Paul Morales and his wife Denise decided something a little more fitting was appropriate for their lifestyle. Basically, a regular cake smash just wasn’t going to cut it.

In a festive and funny photo shoot, the Texas family decided on a more meaty take on this tradition and served up two racks of ribs! The result was a delicious-looking set of pics.

Little Calista wasn’t going to let those ribs pass her by for her first “Rib Smash.” Donning a white onesie and crown, the 12-month old dug right in, clearly not a stranger to Texas BBQ.

In a recent post by dad, Paul shares that Calista is becoming quite the sensation as a result of her unique photoshoot. We just wonder what kind of “smash” we’ll see next.
