4 Ways These Successful Women Stay Energized (All Without Coffee!)

For many women, there are times when it feels like having a coffee cup permanently attached to one hand is the only way to make it through the day. Some of the world’s most successful women have lauded caffeine as their saving grace—Oprah, Katie Couric and even Ariana Grande are among coffee’s biggest fans—and studies have shown that coffee has myriad benefits, from helping people live longer to protecting brain health.

Yet others find caffeinated beverages to be too intense, making them overly wired or anxious, and even causing insomnia if consumed too late in the day. Even those who can tolerate caffeine may want to dial their consumption back occasionally. But for those inevitable days when a pick-me-up is required, what’s a busy, on-the-go woman to do?

Here are 4 surprising — and simple — ways that successful women across various industries stay energized without coffee.

1. Getting in exercise.

“My go-to energy boost is exercise. Not only does my regular practice give me energy, but when I can’t focus or feel like taking a nap, I will do something physical. Sometimes it’s a walk, sometimes it’s yoga. Occasionally, I will simply start doing squats or pushups! It is a great way to get the energy flowing and to wake up.” — Andrea Travillian, lifest‌yle transformation coach, Aspirify.

“The best thing to boost my energy is exercise. I can easily feel my energy levels drop if I’m not consistent with my exercise routine. I also sleep better, which makes me feel more energized throughout the day. Sometimes, it can be hard to find the motivation to get moving, but what I love about exercising is that I always feel better afterward — both physically and mentally.” — Lauren Herring, CEO, IMPACT Group.

“While I do love my Starbucks, I get the most energy after a quick workout first thing in the morning. I’ll do spinning at home or hit up the Pilates studio to stretch and practice mindfulness. Exercising allows me to boost my endorphins and clear my head. I head into work in a great mood and fully energized every day thanks to early AM exercise!” — Deborah Sweeney, CEO, MyCorporation.com.

2. Staying hydrated.

“First thing in the morning, I start my day with a cup of hot water and lemon. Why I love this as a way to wake me up is that it not only gets the digestive tract up and working — our guts are a main driver for our energy and mood — but also the brightness and tartness of the flavor of the citrus wakes up the senses.” — Allison Tibbs, certified personal trainer and healthy lifest‌yle coach, Allison Tibbs Wellness.

“The mid-afternoon ‘slump’ usually happens if I’ve not had enough water. I try for 80 ounces of water daily. And if I feel sleepy in the afternoon, I usually feel better if I drink 1-2 bottles of water.”  — Lisa Hugh, MSHS RD LDN, registered dietitian & food sensitivity expert, Southern Maryland Dietitian.

3. Listening to upbeat music.

“Music increases my energy levels entirely. I compile specific playlists according to the tasks I do each day, and listen to them for a quick energy boost both in the morning and when I reach mid-afternoon slump.” — Katie Derrick, senior content writer for Africa Travel.

“If I am putting in a 12-hour day in my office, I put my favorite music on and I am absolutely energized.” — Vanessa Valiente, personal stylist and creator of V-st‌yle.

“Turning up the music for five minutes and dancing in place makes me smile, energizes my body and immediately shifts my mood. I also use this method when I need an extra boost of inspiration in a moment’s notice.” — Adamaris Mendoza, licensed psychotherapist, coach, speaker and CEO of Mendoza-Carlyle Group.

4. Hacking daily habits.

“Stepping away from whatever I’m doing is often better than coffee. I call it ‘changing the channel.’ Sometimes we think we need caffeine, but really we’re just bored, tired or burned out on an activity. Human beings need breaks and unique stimulation. When I feel fatigued, often I just need to change the channel on my day and find a new show. Just like with streaming, the old show — the activity I was working on — will be there waiting when I’m ready to tackle it again. This keeps me excited and accomplishing more.” — Faleena Hopkins, movie director and romance novelist.

“Having never been a coffee drinker, I turn to peppermint essential oil for a daily boost of energy. It works well for me because it’s so convenient, inexpensive and versatile. Just one drop is all you need! I love the uplifting aroma; it’s fresh, clean and invigorating. I am on the go a lot and if I feel myself starting to drag, all I have to do is reach in my purse, grab the bottle, open it up and take a few whiffs and I am good to go for a couple of hours. Sometimes I will put a drop on a cotton ball and place in my car vent — it’s great for staying awake on long drives. If working from my home office, I will place a few drops in a diffuser or rub a drop on the back of my wrists or neck to keep my energy and focus up.” —Jill Lebofsky, health coach, Midlife Mojo.

Whether you’re a coffee fanatic simply looking to change up your routine or someone who has sworn off caffeine entirely, these four simple alternatives will have you feeling energized in no time. Try them out!

I am at a point in my life where I find myself questioning my parenting abilities daily. (To be honest, it started five years ago when my daughter was born.) But now with a five-year-old and a two-year-old, I find myself going to sleep every night filled with frustration at the way in which I handled things throughout the day. Usually, I’m in tears because I was too hard on my daughter (the five-year-old) or I resent the things I did or didn’t do with my two-year-old son.

Mom-ing is hard. It’s exhausting. It is filled with never-ending worry, battles with myself (and mini versions of myself) and constant thoughts of coulda, woulda, shoulda. And I only have two! You moms with more than two kids are my heroes. Seriously. I would die.

The last few months have been particularly trying for me. My daughter is in kindergarten and at the age where she talks all day. Literally, nonstop. It is mentally exhausting.

Then, there’s my son who does not stop moving from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. His job on this Earth is to make messes and therefore, my job is to clean them up. As I am cleaning up one mess, he is making another. It is physically exhausting. And I’m a personal trainer! I’m used to being active! But this is a whole new level.

A few weeks ago, I was laying in bed with my husband sobbing. I was explaining all the reasons I had failed that day: I yelled way too much, I lost my patience repeatedly, I didn’t get the housework done, etc. I remember saying that I always imagined I would be a good mom—not the version I had become. I would talk things through my kids instead of yell at them, they would never eat junk food, I would play with them all the time, all the things every new mom has the intentions of doing.

Being the good husband that he is, he listened. He told me I am a good mom. Then, he told me to stop thinking about what I did wrong that day and instead, focus on what I did right. So I did. I wrote them down.

I realized that raising kids is just like any other thing in life: it is filled with ups and downs. With good and bad. So I started a list of things I did wrong (my cons) and countered it with things I did right (the pros). I decided that as long as my list broke even, I wasn’t as bad as I thought.

Sure, it would be nice if the pros exceeded the cons, but hey, mom-ing is hard. My list looked something like this:

Con: At 7 p.m., I became so tired I lost my patience and yelled at the kids during bath time. A lot.

Pro: I got up at 3:30 a.m. this morning to exercise, which put me in a great mood. I was happy and energetic when I woke them up and they were happy.

Con: My kids ate microwaved chicken nuggets for dinner and no vegetable because I just didn’t want to fight that battle.

Pro: I made them a pretty good, balanced breakfast and lunch. By good I mean it wasn’t all sugar or microwaved.

Con: They watch too much TV. Today and every day.

Pro: I do homework with my five-year-old daily and quiz her on math and spelling in the car line at school. I practiced numbers and shapes with my toddler. I mean, it was only for the two minutes he would sit still, but I tried.

Con: My two-year-old watched YouTube for an hour while I ran my business from home.

Pro: At least it was about animals so he was learning? This one might be a stretch.

Pro: Tonight, even though I lost my patience and yelled, my daughter told me I was the best mommy in the world. So maybe—just maybe—I am doing something right.

The purpose of my list was to change my focus. To stop concentrating on the bad and start remembering the good. I don’t want to ignore my cons because those are the things I need to work on, but I need to remember the pros, too.

I am not a bad mom. I am a mom trying to figure it out.

I am trying to get through the days and raise good humans. Sure, they watch too much television, eat too much sugar and throw temper tantrums. But on the other hand, they are extremely smart, considerate, funny and strong-willed. They aren’t perfect, but neither am I.

We all have our lists. I can’t cook, but I can clean. I don’t like to play Barbies, but I am always in for a board game or book. I am not crafty, but I can find anything online. I am not the best mom, but I sure do love my kids.

When you are having a bad day, try making your list. Automatically, you will find the cons, but really make an effort to find those pros. They are there. And if you can’t find them, ask your kids. They will tell you—because even when you think you are doing everything wrong, they think you are doing so much right.

I am a fire wife, a mom of two (ages 5 and 2  and a business owner. I am passionate about fitness, help and helping others. I feel like lifting weights and writing are both free forms of therapy.

Being a mother is a blissful experience, and sometimes daunting! If you are a new inexperienced mother, life becomes thrilling cum challenging.

The good part, these challenges will help you learn a lot at the same time. A new mommy is usually overprotective and goes an extra mile to ensure the best for her kid. Maybe, that is why mothers are always deeply attached with their kids and cannot let anyone throw shade on them.

Are you a new mother? I understand, how you are being up all night and still going through the day, ensuring that your baby sleeps in peace. Worry not, here are some tips to make your motherhood more ecstatic.

Given below are the 7 problems that every new mother faces and some tips of how to cope up with the same.

1) Sleep Deprived

I know I know! You are sleep deprived. You are making sure that your baby sleeps with a smile. But when you try to hit the sack, you suddenly hear baby cries. You need to get up and sing a lullaby to your baby. Sweet enough for the onlookers, this repetitive cycle can be very tiresome and might even take a toll on the mother’s health.

If being a mother is a bliss, then getting solution to the related challenges is a boon. You must seek help. Not sleeping is not possible and might lead to abrupt mood swings. Continuous lack in sleep can also lead to mental and emotional disturbances. You need to make sure to ask for help.

Ask your friend, a family member, or trustworthy neighbour to spend some time with the baby and till then you must sleep. Sleeping in bits and snatches can also make up.

2) Breastfeeding Problems

You are not used to it! You never had a baby and the baby doesn’t know anything either. What to do now? Breastfeeding is one of the most common problems every new mother goes through. Many problems like generation of milk, baby not latching, painful feeding, and others arise. But, you simply cannot stop the process.

In this case, you need to see a latching consultant or should ask an experienced mother for help. You must talk it out and call them when trying to breastfeed the baby. They’ll be able to notice the flaws or the problems and can help you. Take your time in excelling in this and let the experts guide you. Sometimes, you just more time to get used to it.

3) Lack of ‘ME’ Time

After giving birth to a baby, you are going to miss your ‘ME’ time with your friends and family. And, you must get prepared for the same. Do not get scared! You can still have the time of your life with a baby besides you.

Try inviting your friends home. They are your friends, so they should better understand your state. If you want to go out, look for places you can take your baby along. A lot of mothers do this and this doesn’t let your ‘ME’ time go in waste.

Also, ask your husband or a family member to babysit for sometime. There might be lesser occasions than before, but you won’t regret it. Also, you must consider meeting friends who already have kids or are about to. They’ll understand your part and won’t press you down for anything.

4) You Feel Out of Shape!

Stretch marks and the stubborn fat! You do not feel like being in your own skin. You feel like an unknown person altogether. And, watching television and celebrities with the perfect body shape after giving birth to babies adds a lot more to existing breakdown.

But, it is okay! It takes around a year to get back in shape with mild regular workout. Prior to that, you need that extra fat, to be true. You need it to be energetic and keep the baby healthy with all the proper nutrition.

Even a personal trainer and full-time babysitter can’t fetch those luring results instantly, but that doesn’t mean you lose hope and stop try. Do whatever you want even; what if you’re the mother of a toddler? Just keep following the tiny bits and you’ll be there.

P.S. Do not forget the motherly glow that you’ll get on your skin!

5) It Pains

After going through an extensive pain, everything seems uncontrollable. You feel that you won’t be able to get out of the pain and it’ll stay with you forever. After going through c-section, surgeries, vaginal stitches, etc., you barely feel in a good state. That hurts.

However, you’ll be fine. All this is temporary and the pain will go away. In case of extreme discomfort, visiting your gynecologist is recommended. Also, ice packs and medicinal pads are prescribed for initial days; they can bring relief.

6) “Baby Blues”

You are hormonal which making you low every now & then. This feeling is termed as “baby blues”. You’ll feel like being stuck in something that doesn’t seem to end. Progesterone levels will decrease and you will be acquainted with mood swings.

And, all this with lack of sleep will mess up things.

Don’t worry it’s a matter of a couple of weeks. With support of family and friends, you can get through. There are many online & offline communities and forums too that help new moms feel good. Do not worry, you are not alone.

7) Ambiguity About What the Baby Wants

You’ll have to deal with this one, but again, just for sometime. Your kid won’t say thanks to you every time you are cleaning his face or wiping his poop. The baby won’t tell you whether he/she needs food or wants some warmth. Baby will just cry & you’ll have to figure out the reason. This might sound so difficult to you, doesn’t it?

“It gets better,” they say. Yes, It will. You’ll ultimately know what your baby wants for the moment. You get to know some fixed expressions and conditions that help you get through it. After all, you have gave birth to the baby so you’ll eventually get acquainted with his quirks and expressions. That’s why, it is said that mothers know their kids the best.

Your baby will smile when happy and no feeling will be better than that. Trust me! When your baby will smile at you for the first time, you’ll feel that all the hardships have paid off.

Then, the long due acknowledgements won’t matter. As, the connect will finally be there!

Take a Note

New mother? Have a newborn besides you being all cranky and crying every now and then? I hope this helps to make you feel tad bit relaxed.

Do not worry! In some time, you’ll be back to pavilion with the best version of yourself and a blessing in your hand. Don’t bother if your night parties are being missed for changing diapers. Trust me, you’ll find the worth.

In New York City, it often feels like every week, not just January 16-20, is Soccer Coaches Week, as boys and girls starting as young as a year old can be seen chasing that recognizable, black and white ball in the parks, on the street, and at specialty classes, camps and teams all over town.  Don’t want your kiddo left behind?  It’s not too late!  Check out some of Red Tricycle’s favorite spots to master the internationally beloved game of soccer mere days after you first get the hang of that walking upright thing:

Super Soccer Stars
Various NYC locations
You know you’ve seen the multi-colored T-shirts, but did you know that Supper Soccer Stars, which hosts lessons, games and birthday parties, also offers a Pre-Soccer class for toddlers between the ages of 12 and 24 months?  (Thought we were kidding about that learning to kick while learning to walk thing, didn’t you?)  Kick & Play is a movement program for parents and their tots, exploring the new notion of self-propelled physical activity… while also developing early soccer skills, of course.

Chelsea Piers
23rd Street & Hudson River Park
Right behind Pre-Soccer is Micro-Soccer.  Future David Beckhams between the ages of 2 and 3 can begin learning to Bend It in a promised supportive and nurturing environment… with Mom and Dad by their side. Children age 3 and up who can separate without problems then have the option of moving into a Spikes class, where preschoolers run, play, improve muscle coordination and learn the concepts of teamwork and cooperation.

Kids In Sports
Various locations in New York City and Connecticut
When is a 1 year old not just a 1 year old?  When he or she is actually a Tiny Athlete!  At Kids In Sports, Tiny Athletes are introduced to a cross-section of physical activity in a Multi Sport format, where three consecutive weeks of learning soccer fundamentals share space with Baseball, Basketball, Floor Hockey, Football and Volleyball.  Open to kids up through 7, although all individual classes are grouped by age.

Soc Rock
Various locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens
2 and 3 year olds can also kick the ball around at Soc Rock, where founder and frequent instructor James Christie is a former pro player and current personal trainer.  Unlike other programs, his focus is on overall strength training and conditioning (yes, for 2 year olds, too) and on teaching skills that promote success in both sports and life.

Soccer by Coach Fher
Various locations
What better way to celebrate Soccer Coaches Week than by checking out a class by a coach proud enough of his methods to turn his name into a brand?  Argentinean native Shadrach Gonzalez Fher (see why the kids just call him Coach?) is certified in both sports training and Child CPR.  His classes are non-competitive, focused on fun, and offer the option of playing inside or outside (which means you get to decide where you want to sit and watch).

Carlos Oliviera Soccer Academy
Various locations in Manhattan and Queens
Another coach confident enough to stamp his name on the product, Carlos Oliviera teaches soccer the way it’s played in, to quote the very enthusiastic World Cup announcer in 2002, “Brahziiiiiillll!”  Open to boys and girls ages 2 ½ and up, COSA has just expanded its unique methodology and approach into the NYC public schools.

Not sure if soccer is the right sport for your family?  A multi-week commitment can be a bit much, especially in the winter, when just getting your little guy or girl into a snowsuit and out of the house can be considered ample exercise for the day – if not the lifetime.

In that case, consider trying out a class that’s one-time only, warm and, most importantly, free.  In the summertime, the NYC Parks & Recreation Department offers regular, hour long Tot Soccer Classes in Riverside Park for anyone age 5 and younger.  Make a note on your calendar and try to catch one in a few months.

Where do you take your budding soccer stars to practice their kick, shots, and passing?

We’re teaming up with Blue Shield of California to celebrate local Bay Area moms who have inspired us to seek healthy, balanced lives.  This week, meet Erin Kreitz Shirey, Personal Trainer, Coach and Founder of Power Fitness PDX.

Ever since her high school days, Erin made a commitment to improving the health, wellness and self-esteem of women through athletics.  Now she teaches new moms how to regain their emotional and physical strength, proving how an active mom is significant, powerful and inspirational.

Red Tricycle: You’re part of a group of moms that are on a serious mission.  What’s yours?
Erin Kreitz Shirey:  It’s to help people live their most vibrant, active and healthy life possible.  To help educate people that regardless of where they start with their health and fitness goals, they can not only achieve new goals, but surpass them.

RT:  How do your kids interact with what you do as a trainer and coach?
EKS:  My kids don’t know anything but being active from the get-go.  And now, as I teach early morning boot camps and shoot fitness apps and videos, they help as participants.  But more so, they help create many workouts.  I incorporate what they’ve learned in their school gym classes to make it more challenging for adults!

RT:  I’m sure your kids have said some pretty funny things during workouts then.
EKS: Last week, my daughter Emerson said to me, “Mommy, I am going to take over teaching your boot camps when I am older.  You will be SO OLD that I’ll have to make sure I am the fast and strong one!”  I love that she is already thinking about teaching with me and about fitness being part of her everyday life!

RT:  Funny!  But there have been some harder moments with your girls too, right?
EKS:  Both my daughters were hospitalized with life threatening conditions—my youngest when she was only 7 weeks old, my eldest when she was 6 and a half.  It was during this time that we saw a need for quality childcare for siblings of hospitalized kids.  So my parents founded the Believe in ME Foundation to raise funds to create the first-ever sibling room—a room for siblings of hospitalized kids so that they may have as much interaction with their brother or sister as possible during their hospital stay.

RT:  You must have learned so much from those experiences.
EKS:  Absolutely.  Parents need to take care of themselves while taking care of others.  You need that inner strength for when the unfortunate and unexpected events arise to be in top form.

Be Like Erin!  Blue Shield of California’s Wellness Challenge:
Sometimes the hardest road to fitness is simply just changing your mindset.  Says Erin, “Get away from the idea that your strongest times have passed, and believe that your strongest self is just getting started.”  Changing your thinking and getting active sets a good example, not only for your kids but for all you encounter.  Every workout you do inspires someone else!

Blue Shield of California is an independent member of the Blue Shield Association.

Bring this paper to receive 20% off ALL gently-used items, and 10% of ALL new items including See Kai Run shoes, Ergo carriers, Hatley rainwear and more – one day only – Saturday, October 17th. Not combinable with other offers. P.S. Halloween will soon be here. We’ve been buying costumes all year. Stop by soon for the best selection!
