Bryce Resort

Mary Martha Aubry

About two hours from Washington, D.C., Bryce Resort in Bayse, VA is the perfect day-trip destination to teach the littles how to ski or to learn as an adult. Everything at Bryce is family-friendly, from their ski rental shop which opens directly to the Little Nip to the biergarten at the bottom of the mountain where mom and dad can take a load off in the Adirondack chairs while watching the littles take the magic carpet up the Bunny Hill and ski down. For a fun family run, take the whole crew up the quad lift and down Revenuer's Run and remember what you loved about skiing as a kid as you watch your littles make a pizza wedge and begin their own skiing journey! Speaking of pizza, enjoy a delicious pizza at the Copper Kettle for dinner before you take your final run down the hill.

Insider Tip: If you're skiing for the day, pack a bag with the kids pajamas for the ride home. It makes the transfer from car to bed that much easier, and after all that skiing, they'll be exhausted!

7 Ways to Make the Most of Snow Days

Cue up the Jimmy Buffet as it’s time for an island getaway (without leaving the states). Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs has tons to offer families looking for a little relaxation time and it is the perfect home base for all your Palm Springs and Joshua Tree adventures. We checked it out and have all the intel on everything we loved about it.

Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs

1. The resort's retro design and upscale amenities are the perfect combo for families.
As soon as we arrived at Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs, we could feel the relaxing island vibe taking over (and we needed it after hours in the car with the kids). The mid-century building encircles an inner pool area that was soon to become our home base for the weekend. Families can enjoy snacks and a game of cards at the many sitting areas in the expansive lobby. Even pets are welcome!

2. Dining options are convenient (and kid-friendly).
The resort really takes into consideration the fact that families are likely to be on the go when visiting and they offer both sit-down and grab-and-go dining options. The on-site restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner service that you can enjoy in the restaurant, on the adjoining patio or in your room. The kid meals were large enough to satisfy the teens in our crew and the chicken sandwich was a family favorite.

We particularly appreciated Joe Merchant's Coffee and Provisions for quick breakfast eats, to-go sandwiches, coffees and pizzas. They also had snacks and alcoholic beverages available. Swing by for your coffee and egg sandwich, and grab a sandwich to bring with you for your Joshua Tree visit.

Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs

3. The resort's spa is a must-visit.
Be sure your visit includes some time at the St. Somewhere Spa. This expansive space will (almost) make you forget you've brought your kids along with you as you fully immerse yourself in its relaxing ambiance. Book a Swedish massage or mani/pedi and be sure to bring your swimsuit with you so that you can enjoy the hot tub and sauna afterward.

Kate Loweth

4. You'll want to spend all day (and night) by the pool.
Be sure your schedule allows for sufficient pool time because it's where the kids will want to hang, we know it. Lounge chairs, a fire pit, cornhole games and an outdoor bar surround the pool that's in the center of the property. You can order food to eat poolside and enjoy views of the San Jacinto Mountains while the kids enjoy the water. There's even a hot tub for post-hike relaxation.

5. Family-sized rooms with a view.
The property offers tons of room options for families of all sizes from the luxurious, two-level Jimmy Buffet suite to traditional hotel rooms. Request a room that faces the pool and you'll get a balcony or patio with outdoor space to enjoy your morning coffee. We enjoyed the Hemisphere suite with a separate dining area, mini-fridge, microwave and coffee maker that made breakfast time easy, even when some wanted to sleep in.

Kate Loweth

6. Nearby adventures are plentiful.
The resort's prime location on the main drag in Palm Springs makes for a great location when you want to check out all that Palm Springs has to offer. Our robust guide to visiting Palm Springs with kids has tons of ideas for what to do in the area like hopping aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, going on a windmill tour and stopping by the Cabazon Dinosaur Museum.

We spent a full day visiting Joshua Tree National Park and would definitely recommend it to families. About an hour's drive from the resort, Joshua Tree gives you a glimpse of another world full of weirdly shaped plants and massive rock formations. You'll want to make sure you have gassed up your car before you go as gas stations are few and far between near the park entrance. Bring food, water and sunscreen with you and do yourself a favor and pay your entrance fee online before you head over. You'll save yourself a major headache and avoid the line at the park entrance.

We entered the park at the south entrance near Cottonwood Springs and exited at the west entrance. This route led us to many of the park's top destinations like the Cholla Cactus Garden and Skull Rock. We particularly liked stopping at the White Tank Campground and hiking to Arch Rock. It was a super easy hike and there were tons of boulders for climbing.

Kate Loweth

The Living Desert is also about an hour from the resort and we had a great time visiting the animals, hiking the trails and even feeding the giraffes. Pro tip: save the giraffes for the end of your visit (they are located near the entrance) if you need a way to motivate your kids through the day. Little ones will love the carousel and you'll definitely want to make note of any animal encounters they have scheduled as they provide a great way to meet some of the animals up close. The brand-new Rhino Safari is located right near the giraffes and a great way to see these majestic creatures in action.

Columbia Gorge

The Columbia Gorge is perfect for a babymoon because it's gorgeous year round and because of its close proximity to your Portland birthing center. Portlanders usually make this a day trip, but a longer stay will allow you and your sweetie to really relax and take in the natural splendor. Skamania Lodge has long been a favorite of Portlanders, as it’s only 45 minutes away from town, but has both a lovely natural setting and plenty of things to do. You may not feel up to ziplining this time around, but there are plenty of other things to do: a ride on the Sternwheeler, a photography tour, local waterfalls, or a mani/pedi at the spa. Or, get in a bucket at the driving range, or leave that up to your partner to tackle while you're getting those toes you haven't seen in awhile fancied up.

Old Mill District via Yelp

Choose your adventure: Stay outside of town at a vacation rental to enjoy the high desert air and mountain views, or stay in town to check out arts, food, and entertainment. In town, you’ll also find a few spas that offer prenatal massage, like the Jinsei Spa, which also offers couples’ massage if you’re so inclined. Dads-to-be get stressed, too! Newport

While Cannon Beach trades in tourism, art and postcard-perfect views of Haystack Rock, Newport has a bit more hustle and bustle, with its touristy Mariner Square (with Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Waxworks, and Oregon Undersea Gardens), busy Bayfront district serving the busiest fishing harbor in the state, lighthouses, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. If you’re feeling up to crabbing or boating (those of you with stable stomachs and solid balance), the Embarcadero Resort has a marina, private crabbing dock and crab pot rentals. Fall Road Trip Ideas for Portland Families

Best Spring Break Destinations for Families Near Portland

Portland Activities: 7 Easy Day Trips From Portland

While it may seem like there’s nothing easy about travel these days, a winter vacation to Big Sky Resort is pretty high up there on the easy living scale. Gorgeous ski slopes, ziplines through the trees and adventures in Yellowstone are just a few of our favorites. We recently got a chance to check out all that the property (and nearby area) has to offer for families and you’re going to want to check it out for yourself, we know it! Here’s the full scoop.

1. Getting there is easy (and you don't even need to rent a car).
Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is your closest airport to Big Sky, MT and it's just over an hour from the resort. Save the hassle of renting a car and book a shuttle from the airport. Once you're at the resort, you won't have to deal with the hassle of driving in the snow and you can request a pickup from the bell staff if you need to get around the property (and even into town).

2. There are so many winter activities on the property, even for non-skiers.
Skiing is definitely the focus at Big Sky Resort. They have private lessons, a ski school, rental shops and a ski valet for storing your gear. There are 39 chairlifts including Swift Current 6, North America's fastest chairlift (with heated seats!). From beginners riding the magic carpet to expert-level skiers, there's the perfect terrain for your day on the slopes.

If you want more than skiing, book a guided snowshoeing adventure where you can meander through Moosetrack Gully with your crew. It's perfect for families as you can go as far as you want and take as many breaks as you need. You can then hike the same trail at night when it transforms into the Enchanted Forest (kids love this!).

3. Winter ziplining is not to be missed!
Yes, that's right, you can zipline even in the winter! Big Sky Resort has two zipline options for families: the shorter Nature Zipline for those weighing in at 45lbs and up, and the Adventure Zipline for older riders with a need for speed. Suited up in your snow boots and snow gear, you'll take a chairlift up to start your descent through the trees and over the ski runs. The final run has you racing for victory against another zipliner—what a rush! Definitely put this one on your list of must-do activities.

4. Dining options galore.
One of the best features of Big Sky Resort is all of the dining options that are available. Here are our favorites:

  • Our top pick for lunch like you've never had before is Everett's 8800. Ride the Ramcharger 8 lift up the mountain for unbelievable views served alongside Alpine-inspired dishes like French onion soup and upscale grilled cheese. Kids are totally welcome here and they'll especially love the spaghetti bolognese. The hot toddy is just what you need to experience the full aprés vibe.
  • Vista Hall offers the perfect ski day break with loads of options like pizza, ramen, tacos and burgers served cafeteria style.
  • We loved the casual dinner scene at Westward Social where plates were shareable and the craft cocktail fresh and delicious.
  • Hungry Moose is your on-site mini grocery store with Montana souvenirs, local brews, hot cocoa, cereal and more. In addition to the location on the property, you can place an online order for pickup at the location in town, making it easy to stock your condo's kitchen when you arrive.
  • We didn't get to try it during our visit, but we heard that the Montana Dinner Yurt is an experience that families love.

Big Sky Lodge

5. Accommodations at Big Sky Resort are designed with families in mind.
If there's one thing that always comes with a winter ski vacation and that is all the STUFF. Make it easy on yourself and book a condominium or cabin at Big Sky Resort so that you family has plenty of room to spread out and a spot for all the gear at the end of the day. We stayed in a three-bedroom Big Horn condo during our stay and it had a full kitchen, downstairs king bedroom with bath, upstairs queen bedroom with bath and third bedroom/bath combo that had a queen plus bunk bed. It really was ideal to come back to after a long day in the snow as everyone had space to spread out and you could cook up breakfast in the morning instead of carting everyone off to a restaurant. Highly recommend!

The resort has all kinds of accommodations available from traditional hotel rooms to full houses (many with ski-in, ski-out access). Bell staff is available 24 hours to take you and your ski gear from your rental to the slopes, downtown to dinner or even to the airport if needed.

6. Yellowstone is just a short drive away.
Do yourself a favor and put a winter visit to Yellowstone on your list. The park is closed to everyone except those arriving via snowcoach or snowmobile so you'll get a totally unique view of this majestic national park. During our visit we had a cab take us to West Yellowstone where we met up with our snowcoach tour. This bus with oversize snow tires took us to view all of the hot spots including Old Faithful, Biscuit Basin and lots of stops for bison and bald eagle spotting. Lunch was included and the kids absolutely loved it! The parents loved that they didn't have to plan anything and could just sit back and enjoy the day.

There's something about hiking through the snow to check out stinky, bubbling geothermal features like geysers, mudpots and fumaroles that really gets kids excited. And seeing a bison right out your window? Priceless!

7 Reasons Breckenridge Is Your Ideal Fall Family Destination

Get Unplugged at Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch

The Best Ski Resorts for Kids & Families

Chicago’s terrain is flat as far as the eye can see, making it tricky to use that ski gear collecting dust. The options to ski near Chicago are few and far between. But, in a little over an hour, you can hit mountainous slopes at one of the area’s best ski destinations. Read on to plan your winter family-friendly romp in the snow at Wilmot Mountain in Wisconsin.

But First, the Basics

Wisconsin’s Wilmot Mountain, part of Vail Resorts (yes, that Vail), is accessibly located halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee. If you or your kids have never skied, Wilmot's ski lessons will have you flying down the mountain in no time. Don’t worry about buying gear, Wilmot Mountain can set you up with high-quality skiing and snowboarding equipment, including helmets.

Priority is given to season passholders for the 2021-22 season, which begins Dec. 3. In addition, reservations are required, so plan early!

Here’s What’s to Expect

Wilmot has been around since circa 1938 but the entire resort recently experienced a facelift. Skiers and boarders can now enjoy upgraded towers and chairs, rope tows, an expanded terrain park, and beginner area conveyor lifts. Plus, the base lodge was upgraded to include up-to-date décor with extra seating and improved dining options. Families with small children will love the ski and snowboard school, which during non-COVID times includes an indoor playspace.

All About Equipment Rental

The experts in the rental shop will hook your family up with everything they need to be successful on the slopes. Skis and poles, as well as snowboards and boots, of varying sizes for adults and children, may be rented. We recommend helmet usage while out adventuring and the shop can rent them to you, as well.

Learn How to Ski

All ages can take group or private lessons to either start from scratch or get a refresher on skiing and snowboarding. This season, no more than 6 students will be allowed per group class, face coverings are required, a health screening will be completed upon arrival and all lessons will meet outdoors to allow for distancing.

Something for the Non-Skiers of the Group

Whether you choose to stay off of skis and boards or want to add something extra, snow tubing is also available. You'll find it just down the road from the skiing/snowboarding area. Dress warm—it’s windy—wear goggles for comfort and visibility, and prepare for a fun nighttime adventure on the 22-lane tubing area. The best part: you won’t have to drag the tube—or yourself—back up the hill. A conveyor belt will do that for you. Afterward, warm up in the tubing lodge and enjoy snacks and hot cocoa.

Reserve in Advance to Play

Lift tickets will not be available to purchase in-person for the 2020-21 season, reservations must be made online or via the call center. This will help keep skiers safe by minimizing lines at the ticket window. It is expected that because of limited capacity, lift tickets will be in high demand and will sell out. So, plan early!

Kids ages 4 and under are eligible for a free lift ticket. It is not necessary to make a reservation for them in advance, simply go to the resort ticket office and pick up a pass.

Good to Know

While lodging isn’t available at Wilmot Mountain, there are several nearby options, including Dragonfly Bed and Breakfast, Hampton Inn & Suites Kenosha, Candlewood Suites Kenosha, The Cove of Lake Geneva, and Best Western Plus Antioch Hotel and Suites.

So, what are you waiting for? Gear up, head out, and have an adventuresome time with your family this winter at Wilmot Mountain!

You don’t have to travel overseas to get to the most magical place in the world. You just have to make your way to Anaheim, California where you’ll encounter sunny skies, surfable beaches, science-y wonders and, of course, Disney Land! Read on for a rundown on where to stay, eat and play during your dream family getaway to Anaheim.

Stay

Element Anaheim Resort Convention Center

The Westin Anaheim Resort
If you are looking for a getaway home-base that offers a little luxury combined with everything you need in one place, The Westin Anaheim Resort is the perfect spot for you to call home while in Paradise. This brand new Four-Diamond hotel is steps away from Disneyland, so bring your strollers and walking shoes because you won’t need a vehicle or Uber to get around. Along with its gorgeous accommodations that feature signature amenities and Westin’s beloved Heavenly® Beds for parents (your kids won’t be the only ones sleeping like babies), your crew can swim in the outdoor pool or exhilarate your body in the Westin WORKOUT® fitness studio featuring Peloton bikes when you aren’t playing with Mickey and Minnie. Plenty of onsite eateries make feeding the family without having to go far a sinch! Options, including a steakhouse, Mexican restaurant and rooftop bar.

 Element Anaheim Resort Convention Center

If you are planning an extended stay in Anaheim, The Element Anaheim Resort will quickly make your family feel at home. This eco-friendly hotel features guest rooms that come with fully equipped kitchens, spa-inspired bathrooms, and of course Heavenly® Beds. Make sure to book one of their Kids Suites which offer bunk beds and a separate play area and TV for the little ones. And this spot makes mornings easy with a complimentary Rise breakfast featuring a make-your-own parfait yogurt station, a fresh range of whole fruits and other healthy options parents are sure to love. Additional hotel perks include a heated outdoor pool for hours of water play along with an outdoor patio complete with seating and two barbecue grills.

Play

A trip to Anaheim wouldn’t be quite as magical without a trip to Disneyland! If you want a real insider tip take our advice, get up early and get to the park right before 8 a.m. when the fun begins. Disneyland features two amazing theme parks—Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. We suggest getting a multi-day ticket so you can make the most of your visit and hit both parks. Prices start at $76/day. Make sure to hit all the classic rides including Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones Adventure! And make sure the Star Wars fans in the family experience the brand-new Rise of the Resistance ride!

Disneyland isn’t the only activity Anaheim has to offer. While on vacation make sure to hit one of the beautiful nearby surfable beaches like Huntington State Beach where the kids can splash in the waves and play in the sand while parents surf. For a break from the sun, let your little ones get science-y at the DiscoveryCube OC, Anaheim's Hands-On Science Center. This massive building houses award-winning exhibits that kids can interact with. Your auto-fanatics can make their own race car in the physics lab and learn the science behind the sport while playing hockey. From exploring outer space to playing with dinos, there’s more to do at this massive science center than your family can possibly pack into one day…but give it a try. We dare you.

Eat

Annette Benedetti

Whether you spend your day on the beach, at the park or exploring the science center, one thing is guaranteed to occur: big appetites and hangry kiddos. Keeping everyone’s tummy full can feel like a full-time job when you are on a big family vacation, but it’s super easy while in Anaheim. Right outside the Westin’s front door, lies one of the best Mexican eateries in town, Puesto. Enjoy noshing on award-winning tacos, burritos, and ceviche. And don’t forget the margaritas for mom! This family-owned and operated restaurant serves up handmade tortillas and an innovative approach to traditional Mexican cuisine with California's fresh, local ingredients.

If you don’t want to leave your hotel to eat, or you are looking for an elevated dining experience, then you’ll want to check out Westin’s own restaurant Tangerine Room. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Tangerine Room has a continuously evolving seasonal menu that showcases local flavors. Enjoy signature dishes such as our SoCal benedict with cage-free eggs, burgers, sandwiches, quality steaks and so much more.

For dining experiences that get you out of your room and fill you up with the best bites the area has to offer, we suggest Poppy & Seed a local eatery that features spacious seating arranged both inside and out in a unique greenhouse setting. While the atmosphere is beautiful, the food is irresistible. This location is one of Orange County’s newest dining experiences created by the award-winning chef and restauranteur Chef Michael Reed. The menu serves upscale American small plates including smoked duck breast, spaghetti, and even burgers for your babes. Don’t forget to relax with one of their cocktails at the end of a long day.

Finally, the foodies in your family will definitely want to take a trip to the Packing District, the OC’s original food hall located in a historic 1919 citrus-packing house. This food hall is home to over 50 restaurants and culinary artisans. There is literally something for everyone in your family and more. From sushi to vegan pizza to tacos and tequila, you’ll have to return every day of your trip to try it all.

Annette Benedetti

A trip to Anaheim offers your family the quintessential California vacation experiences that can be had over and over again as your children make their way through all of their ages and stages. What you don’t fit in one visit, will be waiting for you when you return, which your crew is guaranteed to want to do as soon as they are on the road home.
