It’s hard to break the news that you won’t be home for the holidays this year. According to a recent study by Hotwire 80% of Americans are planning on altering or cancelling their holiday travel plans. The online travel site wants to do something to help make things up to your loved ones who will be missing you this year.

Telling your mom that you won’t be making the trek home has to be one of the hardest parts cancelling your travel plans. Nearly one in three of Americans dread breaking the news to loved ones, with 28% noting they’re procrastinating picking up the phone as long as possible, at least until mid-December.

Hotwire

Hotwire is launching its “Happy Next Holiday” generator and giveaway, to take some of the pressure off letting your loved ones know you can’t travel home this year. To make it up to them, the travel brand is giving one participant the ultimate “IOU” trip worth $25,000 for the whole family to enjoy when they’re ready to reunite and get back to traveling! Hotwire will cover travel expenses like flights and hotel. Plus, since experiences are what make a family reunion one to remember, they’re throwing in $15,580 in cash so you can make up for those activities missed in 2020.

Hotwire

For a little extra comic relief, Hotwire will help the winner remind Mom (or whoever they’re letting down this year) that they still love them, even from a distance. They’ll create a personalized can’t-miss billboard, flyover plane banner or equivalent somewhere your loved one will be sure to notice.

Head to happynextholidays.hotwire.com and follow the prompts to create your ‘Happy Next Holidays’ message. Messages are created when you complete and submit the registration form to enter Hotwire’s Happy Next Holidays Sweepstakes. Select how you’d like Hotwire to generate the news for you: email, text message, postcard or share to social.

The first 100 participants will also receive a special coupon to apply toward future travel on Hotwire.

“We know that this year has been tough on everyone, to say the least, and people are really feeling the stress as we head into the holiday season — a time that under normal circumstances, we reunite with family and friends from around the country,” said Nick Graham, head of Hotwire. “While a trip home might not be in the cards this year, we’re committed to giving travelers something to look forward to and a little comic relief in the meantime. Hotwire’s awesome deals will be there for you when you’re ready to get back out there!”

We are still riding on the excitement of the news of The Proud Family reboot on Disney+. Today, the cast and executive producers participated in a virtual reunion during the NAACP’s Arts, Culture & Entertainment Festival. The panel was moderated by Keke Palmer, who announced that she will be joining the cast for the upcoming series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder

Today’s panel featured Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Tommy Davidson (Oscar Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), Jo Marie Payton (Suga Mama) and Cedric the Entertainer (Uncle Bobby), creator/executive producer Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar. Their conversation included reminiscing about the cultural impact of the Disney Channel series which premiered 18 years ago, and a glimpse of the exciting new series coming exclusively to Disney+.

Palmer will play the role of Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, a 14-year-old activist who relentlessly marches to the beat of her own drum. She is extremely mature for her age and will not hesitate to shut anyone down with her blunt honesty and wisdom.  The adopted daughter of mixed race parents, Maya is new to town, and initially disassociates herself from Penny and her crew because she is skeptical about what she perceives to be the superficiality of social cliques. However, Penny eventually gains her hard-earned respect and the two become good friends.

Picking up the story of its central character Penny Proud, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder will also include her family: parents Oscar and Trudy, twin siblings BeBe and CeCe, and her grandmother Suga Mama (and Puff!). Penny’s loyal friends Dijonay Jones, LaCienega Boulevardez and Zoey Howzer will also be returning.

All seasons of The Proud Family are currently available on Disney+. The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is currently in production.

Have you ever noticed that when you take your kid to the park and you’re there to meet them at the bottom of the slide, they could go down a hundred times? Here they come with a smile, hair blowing back, arms outstretched, and you catch them. It’s like a celebration and reunion all in one. But when you go to the park with the ladies, and you stand and talk, all the kids get bored of the playground after a few trips down the slide. There is something magical in being cherished and celebrated that brings freshness and courage.

When I was a little girl, every day when I got home from morning kindergarten, my mom would greet me with a lunch tray. On it was a sandwich, usually butter and peanut butter, and a red plastic cup filled with milk. I’d eat my lunch and then we’d watch “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.” My mom came to all my junior high basketball games and cheered for me. (At the highest-scoring game of my career, I made 4 points). She came to visit me in college and sat down to read my honors thesis cover-to-cover. When I was in medical school, she flew across the country to hear me present at a symposium in Carmel, California and we walked along the rocky beach and gathered shells and watched the sea lions.

My mom gave me space to have my own experience but was always there to reunite and celebrate. She believed in me to near ridiculous proportions, seeing no bounds to my potential or opportunities. In her mind, nothing was “out of my league.” For instance, once we went to the symphony to hear the famous Joshua Bell play a violin concerto. I overheard her telling someone, “You know, I always thought my daughter would marry Joshua Bell someday.” The other concertgoer raised her eyebrows and said, “Oh! Were they dating?” “No, they’ve never met,” my mom admitted. Minor detail. My actual husband, with whom I’m raising eight beautiful boys, was the better catch for me anyway. All humor aside, my mom’s absolute devotion opened the world to me.

So, fast-forward to last week when I was on the phone with my oldest son. I was simultaneously marveling and lamenting at the seeming centrifugal force upon our family as we all grow and change. He’s at college studying opera and learning things that take him beyond what any of us will experience or understand. His brother is serving as a missionary in Thailand. He bikes around the village and eats foods we’ve never tried (and likely never will) like raw crab and fried crickets. I see the centrifugal force in operation with every son down the line, coming like an inescapable prophecy. Even my youngest, who is 4, just learned to ride a two-wheeled bike. For now, he circles our cul-de-sac, but it’s only a matter of time.

Sometimes this anticipatory grief from a nest that is “emptying” makes me want to hold on too tightly. I hear other moms in my small, insular community say they’ll never let their kids venture further than the college in town. I get that, but I don’t get that. As a pediatrician with a behavioral focus, I see firsthand the so-called “failure to launch” epidemic. There are many factors at play, but perhaps one is a motherly “launch ambivalence” of which I too am guilty. We want our kids to go off and experience life, but at the same time, we don’t want them to go. Author Rochelle Weinstein said, “A mother’s job is to teach her children not to need her anymore. The hardest part of that job is accepting success.” Personally, I’m in denial. I hope we’ll always need each other to some degree, because of the bonds we’ve created.

My husband and I have been intentional about teaching our kids life skills and inspiring them to independence, but their adventurousness and self-sufficiency is beyond what we have given. My instinct has been to try to do everything I can for my kids and optimize their every experience, which anthropologist David Lancy would consider a recipe for failure-to-launch. In his book, “The Anthropology of Childhood,” he writes of his work in a remote Liberian village where he observed children thriving and independent because of what he called “benign neglect”—they had no one fussing over them; rather, there was a general trust in the natural growth process. Perhaps having eight kids and the inadvertent but naturally resulting in “benign neglect” has saved me from a future with eight unemployed grown men living in my basement.

It’s always a balance between stepping in and stepping back. For now, I’ll enjoy the six boys still under my roof and the two who are out venturing. I’ll cherish them, but maybe I can let go of some of that mom-guilt for not being there every single minute, because it’s actually allowing them to grow up, as painful as it feels. All my cumulative, devoted efforts thus far have helped them grow too—my efforts, plus a distillation of devotion passed through the generations.

I say to believe in your kids ridiculously; believe they can do and be anything. Cherish them and hold them tightly while you have them, then let them loose onto the world’s playground. But no matter how old they get, be there to meet them at the bottom of the slide.

You weren’t the only one to “phone home” on Thanksgiving. An all-new E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial short debuted on NBC, Syfy and Comcast Xfinity’s website this Thursday—and it gave us all a glimpse into what life is like for the adorable alien, Elliott and the rest of his fam almost 30 years after the original film.

The four-minute-ish film, titled A Holiday Reunion, starts with Elliott’s children finding E.T. As you might remember from the classic flick, the scream-filled exchange is more than reminiscent of the original meet and greet (or rather, meet and shriek) that happened when Elliot and Gertie first saw the alien.

As the short goes on, E.T. gets the chance to experience all kinds of new and exciting 2019 adventures, such as the Internet, virtual reality goggles and Reese’s Pieces cupcakes!

Henry Thomas, the original Elliott, told Deadline, “The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people’s minds and hearts.”

Even though acclaimed director Steven Spielberg helped the original movie, he didn’t return for the short. Instead, Lance Acord (cinematographer for Lost in Translation and Adaptation) directed A Holiday Reunion.

The welcome piece of nostalgia for the holidays comes to us courtesy of Comcast Xfinity. According to Deadline, Peter Intermaggio, SVP for Marketing Communications, Comcast Cable, said, “Our goal is to show how Xfinity and Sky technology connects family, friends and loved ones, which is so important during the holidays.” Intermaggio also added, “The classic friendship between E.T. and Elliott resonates around the world.”

“The Proud Family” Is Getting a Reboot on Disney+, According to Star Jo Marie Payton

Disney Channel & Disney Jr. Are Premiering a Holiday-Themed Line-Up

First Look: “Clifford the Big Red Dog” Reboot Premiering in December

When Brandon, Brenda, Kelly, Dylan, Steve, David, Donna and Andrea graduated over a quarter of a century ago, who would have expected a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot? Well now it looks like the gangs heading back to the Peach Pit—because Tori Spelling just confirmed a reunion!

During an interview with Access Live the actress/reality star dished after being asked about recent pics of Spelling, along with former cast members Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering. What looked like a casual brunch between friends was really a between-meeting coffee break. That’s right, Spelling confirmed that the 90210 gang was indeed talking to networks about a show reboot.

After getting cheers (and who would cheer this littler slice of ’90s nostalgia?), Spelling asked, “Did I just confirm something that wasn’t known?” Um, yes! The former-Donna Martin actress went on to add that it is the “OG” crew back together again, playing “heightened” versions of themselves. The only exceptions being Luke Perry (due to potential Riverdale conflicts) and Shannen Doherty. While Doherty’s character Brenda was obviously central to the show, the actress’s recent battle with breast cancer has made her return an unknown as of now.

So when can we expect 90210 to return to the small screen? While there’s no debut date as of now, Spelling did say that the show will air sometime in 2019.

“Fuller House” Will Come Back for One Last Season on Netflix

An Update on That Whole “Baby Shark” Netflix Series

If your kids love to explore the wilderness, but haven’t quite reached a level of endurance (or attention span) to tackle that six-mile mountain hike, then we have the ideal park for you. Located in Maple Valley, its name says it all…Lake Wilderness Park. Complete with a brand-new playground, a beach and swimming area (hello summer!), large grassy spaces to play and picnic and acres of trails and wetlands to explore, it’s everything you’d want in a park and more! If you’re ready to give this popular South Sound spot a try, scroll down for the deets.

Scooters, Bikes, Dogs, Kids…Come One, Come All
Located approximately 45 minutes southeast of Seattle, Lake Wilderness Park is a 117-acre park that boasts a 42-acre arboretum with forest trails and display gardens along with flat, paved trails perfect for tiny terrors who are more keen on perfecting their cycle and scootering skills. In addition to well-maintained trails and paths, you will find huge areas of open green space for your doggie’s playing delight. But the best part? All of these amenities surround the brand-new playground complete with swings, slides, climbing structures and rope jungle gyms to keep the busiest of tykes happy and entertained.

Calling All Climbers!
If you’ve got a little Spiderman wannabe, he’s going to be in superhero heaven navigating the new web-like play structure. The big rope and slide structure is designed for the 6 and older crew, but there’s also a smaller structure for tots that might not have grown their own set of Go-Go-Gadget arms yet. If your little one is more into reaching for the clouds, there is a large swing set decked out with two baby swings, four regular swings, a see-saw swing (one side for a bigger kid, the other designed for your littlest explorer—think baby swing-style) and an ADA accessible swing. The playground also has a merry-go-round (currently under repair) that will be an option in the future for your tiny tots, and most likely a new bicep workout for you! Regardless of what your kiddo’s go-to activity is, if you’re looking for a place to peter out your bundle of energy, you won’t be disappointed here.

Right Now You’re in Warm-Ups, But When It Warms Up…
Keep this park on your spring and summer radar! The lake has a beach to accommodate endless sandcastles as well as an even bigger green space for those who prefer to set up their beach camp away from the water and put their little piggies in the grass as opposed to the sand. The park also features a huge dock for fishing and lounging, which surrounds the swimming area for when the weather really heats up, along with seasonal lifeguards, boat rentals and a concession stand (ice cream, anyone?).

Moms Who Lunch
If a mid-day picnic is beckoning you, there is certainly plenty of room to throw down a blanket or take advantage of the many picnic tables that call this park home. Psst…if you’ve got a large group (think: PEPS group or family reunion), reserve one of three picnic shelters or five picnic sites. At least 15 tables are located on the main grassy area by the beach, but dozens (and dozens!) of others are scattered throughout the park. Pack those PB&Js, pick a table, let the Littles run after the ducks and enjoy the views of the lake year-round.

Wait! One More Thing…
If your kiddos have already conquered those basic biking skills or a trail walk sounds like just the ticket to burn off the stir-crazies, you can access the 17.3-mile Cedar River Trail from this park. The soft-surface section of the trail is called the Green to Cedar Rivers Trail and will connect you to the Cedar River Trail that runs all the way from Renton to Landsburg!

Good to Know
The large main parking lot is located between the playground area and the beach with plenty of parking spots for even the busiest days and biggest grocery-getters. Since 2015, 91 paved parking spots have been added.

As you head down the road towards the park there will be two entrances. The first entrance will take you to the Lake Wilderness Lodge and the Arboretum, but if you go down to the next entrance on your left, you will find a generous lot near the lake and playground amenities. No pass required!

Restrooms are located near the beach as well as next to the playground.
