Becoming a new parent can be exciting, but it can also be terrifying if especially since it’s your first time. You will need to prepare well for the changes that come with parenting, and sometimes it means changing your lifest‌yle to accommodate all the financial needs that come with being a parent.

Parenthood requires a lot of planning, and one thing which should be at the top of your planning list is how to manage your finances to cater to all the needs of your growing family.

One thing that you will see change when you become a parent is how you spend your money. If you don’t plan for this change, you can find yourself in a deep financial crisis. To avoid falling into a financial crisis as a new parent, you will need to reduce and eliminate some expenses to accommodate and afford your new life as a parent.

Here are some tips for new moms and dads that will help them save money for their families.

1. Create or reassess your budget. It is crucial to create a personal budget or a budget for your household, and if you already have one, you should re-evaluate it to accommodate the additional needs. A budget helps you to track your expenditure and know where your money goes, thus making it easier to make decisions about how you spend. You can identify the essential things that really need your spending and cut back on some other things that are not essential.

2. Boost your savings and reduce monthly expenses. After compiling your budget and knowing where to spend and to cut back, you should look for other saving strategies by looking at your monthly expenses.

You should take out non-essential monthly expenses. Do you really need that Spotify subscription? To save money on your electric bill, unplug appliances and turn off the lights when not in use. You can also reduce your monthly electricity bill by cutting back on your reliance on appliances like air conditioning and only using it when necessary.

Look into the little things that you can forego, such as dining out all the time or buying expensive coffee. There is always something that you can do to bring down your expenses so that you can save more money.

3. Look out for discounts or promotions. Never get carried away when shopping for your baby as a new parent. Make a shortlist that will guide you on what you need to buy. Always stick to the essentials and what is really needed when on the shopping floor.

Also, when shopping online, you can save a lot by using promotional vouchers, online coupons, and discounts offered for the various baby and home products.

Make it a habit to always look out for weekly flyers from stores, which are sent through email as they may contain coupons and discounts on multiple items. These days, you can also find online coupons on retail stores’ websites, or you can search for them on the internet.

4. Remember babies don’t need a lot. After budgeting for the baby, the next thing you should do is reduce your spending on unnecessary baby products. Spend on what the baby needs at that time. Don’t rush to buy baby clothes and shawls that the baby might overgrow in a few months. One of the best ways to save on baby clothes is to get from family or friends’ hand-me-downs. When it comes to toys, you can buy just a few to entertain the baby.

5. Cut back on non-essential spending. You can save a lot when you cut down on non-essential spending. One way you can do this is by cutting down the amount you spend on dates and movies. You can also cut them entirely by choosing to stay at home and watching Netflix instead. You can hold off upgrading phones and even TVs to the latest models until you get used to your finances as a new parent.

Parenting can be a challenge for new parents, especially when it comes to finances, but saving money as new parents is not impossible. If you adjust your lifestyle and look for ways to spend less and save more, being new parents won’t be as financially challenging as you thought it would be.

In partnership with The Harris Poll, Roku, Inc. has announced findings from its 2020 Holiday Consumer Shopping study. Giving new perspective into ever changing shopping habits, the 2,000 person survey gives fresh insight into shopping priorities and habits amidst the pandemic.

Many Americans have differing opinions about the future of the economy, however, the survey found that seven out of 10 consumers planned to spend the same or more on gifts this year. On average, they expected to spend about $885 when it comes to holiday-related purchases.

Due to so many travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines, approximately 31 percent of those surveyed shared that they were planning to buy more gifts this year because they won’t be able to see as many family and friends. That same number of people reported they planned on purchasing a gift to help someone else or themselves to work from home.

Due to COVID-19 respondents also expect to do 65% percent of their shopping online as opposed to in store. Curious about what else the survey found? You can view the full report online on the Roku website.

Here’s How to Improve Your Child’s Reading Score by 74%

Research Suggests Babies’ Random Choices Become Preferences

“Momsomnia” is a real thing. New research from online retailer Zulily shows that 62% of moms are up at least one time a night, most often between the hours of 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Moms are worrying about the world, planning for the unknown and needing a no-judgement zone.

woman in bed on computer

Zulily unveiled a list of the Top 10 Sleepless States for Moms in America based on late-night social media listening and found that while the golden state took the top spot, moms are up at night from coast to coast:

  • California
  • Texas
  • Florida
  • New York
  • Illinois
  • Arizona
  • Ohio
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Washington

To give moms a new way to spend their sleepless hours, Zulily is launching The Late Night Shop for Mom – a month-long shopping event that will offer free shipping on orders placed between 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. PT on orders $35+ on curated collections refreshed each week, featuring must-have items that offer humor, comfort and a sense of calm during trying times.

While most new moms are up late adapting to new sleep and meal schedules with baby, the survey data shows there’s more on mom’s mind than a late-night snuggle session. Nearly a quarter of moms say worrying about the world keeps them up at night which is higher than the percent of moms who say they’re up late at night to care for their children or planning for the future. 38 percent of Moms say they feel judged by other parents for their parenting decisions, which could be contributing to their overall mental load. Nearly one-third of moms say they pass the time late at night by doing something online like shopping online, browsing social media or checking email.

“Mom has the weight of the world on her shoulders, so we wanted to learn more about what she’s worried about, what she needs and how we can help lighten her load,” said Lindsay Reynolds, Zulily’s family shopping and trends expert. “Our research shows that moms are actively looking for products for her children and her home that help create a sense of calm, add a dose of daily humor, and help create experiences that she feels her family may be lacking right now. We’re giving new moms special savings and curated shopping events designed to provide a fun way to spend those sleepless hours shopping daily deals in our Late Night Shop for Mom.”

The research suggests that the state of society is not only causing moms to lose out on sleep, but it’s impacting what she’s shopping for and why.

  • Fashion Micro Moments: 45 percent of moms say that dressing their baby up in special occasion dresses or cute outfits impacts their own mood, citing feelings of happiness, relief as well as a sense of control and return to normalcy. Zulily offers unique brands like Milkbarn, which are perfect for dressing up baby for at-home photoshoots.
  • Mom Memes to Cope: The majority of moms say that humor is important in navigating the pain points of parenthood. Moms say that sharing humor and memes allow them to feel connected with other parents and allows them to express how they feel. Brands like Tesa Babe offer funny apparel to make the family smile.
  • Craving Calm at Home: Almost half of moms say their home could benefit from a greater sense of calm. What’s more, moms with babies and children under 5 are more likely to say their children are impacted by current environmental stress. That’s why Zulily offers soothing tools and toys from Calisson Toys, official distributor of Sophie la Girafe brand in the U.S. and Kushies alongside apparel like JoJo Maman Bébé.
  • Mother Nature Rules: Moms are turning to the woods for baby inspiration, with 33 percent saying an outdoor motif is most likely to apply to their baby’s life indoors. 22 percent say the sea and beach are their source of inspiration. 30 percent of moms are also turning to cool color shades (gray, blue, green) in nurseries, which studies have indicated can have a calming effect on children. Parents can turn to organic apparel from Oliver & Rain to swaddle their little ones in nature-inspired garb.

Zulily’s Late Night Shop for Mom launches on Sept. 17, 2020, with weekly themed events going live at 2 a.m. each week through Oct. 14, 2020. The shop will feature nursery décor, kid’s clothes, baby toys, and more at up to 70 percent off.

The Newest (& Coolest) Gear for Your Dino-Obsessed Kid

Staying at home for months on end has had us all online, and shopping online, a lot more. Our Seattle Editor, Allison Sutcliffe feels us. A part-time, working mom with three kids, we asked Allison for her top 12 products that have gotten her through the pandemic, the summer and beyond. Read on to hear more from Allison.

I’m a work-from-home mom of three kids (ages 2, 9 & 12), and like many Seattle families, I’ve had to pivot hard these past few months, trading summer camps and the annual family vacay for outdoor games and backyard movie nights instead. Because we’re all in this together, I thought I’d share the gear that’s making it happen for us (and keeping me sane, too!) in the hopes it does the same for you. Scroll down to see what I can’t get enough of right now.

Orion 10012 SkyScanner Telescope

We had no idea we’d be in for the stargazing summer of the century when we picked up this tabletop telescope for my oldest daughter's pandemic-style birthday. Even though we didn’t spot Neowise (so bummed!), we pull it out often to check out the moon (in amazing detail!) and spot planets and bright stars in the summer sky. My favorite part is that it's so portable. We can easily take it anywhere and set it at kid height so everyone can take a peek.

Get yours here, $99.99.

Tovolo Ice Pop Molds

With the warmer-than-usual weather we’ve been having, the kids have been downing homemade popsicles by the dozen to cool off. We’ve gotten a ton of mileage out of these BPA-free molds. The fact that I get to control what goes into them… added bonus!

Get yours here, $11.99.

Curious Kids Nature Guide

Hiking has been our family’s go-to, socially distanced outdoor activity since the beginning of the pandemic. As restrictions have loosened, and we’ve ventured out further and further, we keep going back to this bookshelf fave that highlights local eco systems and inspires us to seek out new terrain and see what we can find in the forest and on the beach.

Get yours here, $12.59.

Beet World

courtesy Beet World

Since we first started staying home, I can’t tell you how many clothing sizes my toddler has been through! Instead of hitting the stores, I’ve added a few playful pieces from Beet World to her wardrobe. I can’t get enough of this local, mom-owned biz that gives back and is focused on sustainability. Beet World’s been a lifesaver for birthdays, too. Their newly-added mystery gift boxes make shopping for friends and family, near and far, a cinch, no matter what the occasion.

Get yours here, prices vary.

Painted Learning Tower & Activity Boards

We’ve been doing a lot of baking recently (hello, quarantine 15!), and my two year old wants in on the action. So we splurged on this learning tower that lets my toddler safely “help” alongside us. I love the multi-function of this souped-up step stool. Seriously. We removed a side panel so she climbs in an out at will, hopping off to play with the activity boards when she's had enough mixing, pouring and stirring. We all win with this one!

Get the tower here, $239.99 and the activity boards here and here, $39.99-44.99.

KEEN Kids’ Seacamp II CNX-C

Not a new obsession but a reliable one. New pair. Every year. Each kid. We wear them pretty much everywhere—tidepooling, hiking, boating and exploring the neighborhood. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a practical shoe.

Get yours here, $29.95 & up.

Paint & Plant Pizza Herb Growing Kit

Admittedly, I don’t have the greenest thumb, but this handy herb growing kit has been just what my kids needed to get interested in gardening. We tranferred the original plants and they're doing just fine in pots on the deck, and new herbs are growing in the kitchen window as we speak.

Get yours here, $24.99.

Qwixx

Everyone in the family loves this game, even our youngest (we let her roll the dice for us). It's easy to learn, quick to play and we can bring it anywhere (it fits in my diaper bag as easily as my purse). Plus, there's enough luck mixed in that anyone can win. My kids love that part the most!

Get yours here, 7.99

Reusable Swim Diaper

Where were these things when my oldest was born? Seriously love using this diaper with my toddler whether we’re at the beach, splashing in the kiddie pool or running through the sprinkler in the backyard. It’s my guilt-free summer gear for baby.

Get yours here, $16.97.

Pacific Breeze Easy Set Up Beach Tent

Although we haven’t gotten around to much camping this summer, we’ve tooled around the Sound seeking out secluded beaches every chance we get. When we find a spot we set up this lightweight pop-up shade that keeps everyone out of the sun and acts as a home base. My tween can set it up and take it down on his own (love it!) and it's packs up easily too. We love throw 'n' go gear!

Get yours here, $74.99

Kubb Outdoor Tossing Game

We knew we’d need to turn our backyard into a play zone to get the kids through the summer, so we ordered Kubb and haven’t looked back. Everybody’s into the strategy of it and I love that it's one more thing to do outside, close to home with the kids.

Get yours here, $49.99.

Alligator Bubble Blower Machine

This one is a kid obsession in our house. The big kids love turning it on almost as much as my two-year-old loves playing with the bubbles it makes. Needless to say, we’ve had a lot of impromptu bubble dance parties in the backyard.

Get yours here, $14.99.

Editor’s Note: At the time of publication, all prices were current and all items were available for purchase.

We’ve all had to pivot in the past few weeks in an effort to keep up with the ever-evolving health guidelines. As most communities are now sheltering in place, the impact on local business is most significant. Here at Red Tricycle, we’ve been pivoting ourselves, and trying to figure out how to best support the local businesses that have been near and dear to our hearts for over a decade. Here’s where we’re at today:

  1. We’ve tweaked our calendar to now support virtual events. If you are hosting any classes, camps or entertainment either on your website or Facebook, you can submit your event via our virtual event submission page and we will publish and promote it ASAP.
  2. We’re encouraging all readers to support local businesses by shopping online, either for merchandise, a gift card or a membership. If you offer any of these shopping opportunities, please submit your info to our online business support page and we will promote your business through various channels including our website, newsletters and social media.
  3. We’re trying to gauge how small business owners are feeling about their business and the economy. Will you take this 4-question survey? Will will share results with all respondents.
  4. We’ve put together a list of financial resources for small businesses, from the SBA, to IRS and Facebook’s small business grants.
  5. We started a closed Facebook Group for family-friendly businesses and event leaders.  We’re brainstorming, collaborating, sharing marketing tips, and helping each other get through this challenging time. If you would like to connect, please join us here.

The holiday season is a time when you can have lots of fun with your family and friends, meet new people, have a get-together, and go shopping. While this time of year is fun for many, it can also be a stressful time for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. The good news is there are things you can do to decrease the stress level for your family and hopefully have fun too!

Common Holiday Stressors

While every child and adult with Autism is different, there are some common stressors the holiday season presents for those on the spectrum. These could be shopping, receiving gifts, being around less familiar family or family friends, waiting in line to take pictures with Santa, or being expected to be social at events. Other common stressors can be the simple schedule changes that take place during holidays, like no school or longer time away from home, canceled therapy appointments, traveling, different bedtimes or disruption of daily routines. With that in mind, here are 7 tips that might help prevent behaviors of concern and help everyone have and enjoy a happy holiday season!

1. The Premack Principle. (also known as “grandma’s rule”). The parent uses statements that list the order of events using “First ….then….”.  This strategy seems to work well most of the time. Example: Mom wants a picture with Santa and all the kids at the mall. She tells the kids, “1st take a picture with Santa, then we can go ride the carousel”. This works because it clearly defines what behavior the child needs to do (take a picture with Santa), before getting to do what they want (ride carousel).

2. Visual or Written Schedules. Another prevention strategy would be to make a visual or written schedule for the day and tell the child what their day is going to be like. Since accepting or tolerating changes in routines can be difficult for children on the spectrum, it is helpful to provide a visual of the activities lined up for them that day. It might be important to let your child know when they will have downtime or time with preferred activities in the schedule as well.

3. Social Stories. Making social stories for different situations and reading it ahead of time helps your child to prepare themselves for the upcoming situation.

4. Sensory Preparedness. The holidays are full of noisy places, music, lights, and smells. If you are planning to go somewhere loud, like a party with music or a crowded shopping mall, plan to take headphones for your child if they do not tolerate loud noises or music. If you are going to a family or friend’s home, you can ask the host if it’s possible to have a quiet space or room or if they are willing to reduce the music or television sounds. Plan to bring your child’s sensory calming tools or items (preferred clothes, blankets, toys) and be sure to periodically provide sensory breaks.

5. Get Ahead of the Shopping Rush. Plan to shop ahead of time to avoid last-minute shopping trips, or even better, shopping online is a great way to avoid the big crowd and the long lines during the holiday season.

6. A picture with Santa. There are a couple of things that can be done to avoid anxiety. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is not the best thing for the children on the spectrum. Many malls in America have set aside a special time and days for families who want to have a calm encounter and visit with Santa (search for sensory Santa in your area). These are usually a free event, but there are limited tickets or times to reserve, so be sure to plan ahead. The other thing that some malls provide is to schedule an appointment online instead of waiting in line for the picture.

7. Receiving Gifts. Know what your child wants as a gift and notifying your close family and friends know about it in advance is a great way to prevent some uncomfortable situations. Opening a gift which your child doesn’t like might create a situation that is uncomfortable for your child and your family or friends. This is something that can be easily avoided if everyone is prepared. You can also prepare the gift givers ahead of time that your child shows gratitude in different ways. You can take a picture of your child interacting with the toy later to send as a “thank you” if your child isn’t able to show excitement at the moment of opening the gift.

These are just some strategies that may work for your child and family to navigate the holiday season. Visit www.gbcaba.com for tips like this and more.

Too many Amazon packages? Don’t worry, this UPS driver will hide them from your spouse.

Shopping online is one of the blessings of parenting in the 21st Century. You never need to leave the house to stock up on supplies, but the downside is your porch will probably be constantly piled with packages. One clever woman has the perfect accessory to pair with her online shopping, a doormat that reads, “Please Hide Packages from Husband” and that’s exactly what her UPS delivery person did.

In the now viral post that Ebony Freeman shared on Facebook, she shows a picture of a giant package hilariously sticking out from underneath that genius doormat. The caption reads, “Oh my god look! The UPS guy actually hid it under the rug!”

The post was shared and liked thousands of times, with commenters coveting both the awesome doormat and the delivery person. “I had no clue it was going to get that much traction,” Freeman told Good Morning America, explaining that her husband Mike doesn’t actually get upset with her shopping habit. “I have a package a day coming from Amazon but he thinks it’s funny.”

Buying the latest tech gadgets is anything but cheap. Still, technology has become a major part of modern life. Thus, it is practically impossible to live without it. However, if you are resourceful, there are a wide range of effective ways in which you can reduce the money you spend on gadgets. Get acquainted with five simple tips to do that.

Sell Your Old Devices

Before thinking about purchasing the latest iPhone or tablet, you should first think about selling or trading your old device, as there is a wide range of retailers that offer you this opportunity. The newer your gadget is, the more credit you can receive in exchange. You should consider opting for companies that offer credit in exchange, as there are others that typically provide users with gift cards. Another way you can earn money after your older device is selling it on eBay.

Determine Your Needs

Before considering updating your gadgets, you should determine the amount of storage space you genuinely need. This way, you won’t get tricked by a clever salesperson to purchase more than you need. Your gadget purchases ought to meet your individual requirements; there’s no reason to buy expensive gadgets if you don’t have use of it.

Consider Online Shopping

If you didn’t consider online shopping before, it’s time you did that. Shopping online offers you the possibility to browse for hours before deciding on a particular product and get acquainted with the price range, particular properties and everything you need to know about the gadget you have in mind. Even though it requires a lot of your patience, it’s significantly convenient as online shopping offers you a wide range of great deals and coupons you can take advantage of.

When Possible, Opt for Free Software

Whether you were aware of the fact that you can opt for free software or not, there is a wide range of online services that provide users with free, equally effective free services. This software offers the same functions without additional, exorbitant costs. Still, while this alternative is not always available, you should always browse for obtaining products that meet your needs for lower costs. Simply reimburse yourself with patience and start browsing online.

Consider Skipping the Extended Warranty

While some people consider extended warranty to be an official guarantee that their products will be protected for a longer amount of time, the truth is that the steep prices to extended warranty cost increasingly more than the amount of money you would pay in the worst case scenario where you have to fix your gadget. As a matter of fact, retailers make larger sums of money from selling extended warranty than from the product themselves. Most of your gadgets will work perfectly, and in case they break down, the amount of money you saved will imminently cover the possible expenses associated with repair. Skipping extended warranty will undoubtedly help you save money, that’s a given.
